Boston Acoustics

Why install component speakers?

A component speaker system gives you the best possible performance from your car audio system. A system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, each designed to cover one specific range of frequencies. As separate components, the woofer can move freely to deliver more powerful performance, while the tweeter can be custom-mounted in a better spot up closer to your ears, revealing a whole new world of detail. Separate crossovers are far superior to the simple filters wired into full-range speakers, so the components work together for smoother, more focused sound.

Our take on the Boston Acoustics SC60

by Buck Pomerantz

Boston Acoustics SC Series component speaker systems bring brilliant sound to your vehicle's audio system. Their precision construction and sensitive response allow them to deliver superb performance, filling your car with perfectly balanced sound and making your drive much more pleasurable.

The Boston Acoustics SC60 component system features a tough copolymer 6-1/2" woofer that really delivers the beat. A butyl rubber surround keeps the cone under tight control for clear sound and reliable operation even at extreme playback levels. The compact neodymium magnet helps reduce the size of the SC Series speaker, so it can fit in more vehicles without any loss of fidelity. The woofer also fits in a variety of 6-3/4" locations.

The separate 3/4" Kortec® dome tweeters fit in virtually any location you choose — whether flush- or surface-mounted, they can be aimed to provide clean, well-balanced instrumental detail throughout your car. The outboard crossovers make sure the highs and lows combine smoothly, and protect the tweeters from sudden overloads. You can choose from 3 tweeter output levels to achieve the most natural sound.

    Features

Woofer: The SC60 component system is equipped with copolymer woofers with butyl rubber surrounds. Each woofer has a neodymium magnet, which has a high power-to-weight ratio and a compact size about one-tenth the size of traditional iron-ferrite magnets.

Tweeter: The SC60 component system features 3/4" Type S2 Kortec soft-dome tweeters for a smooth high frequency response and linearity. Kortec is a silky fabric saturated on the underside with a proprietary stiffening agent. Because the inside surface of the dome is ultra stiff, the tweeter tracks the signal with ease and produces an excellent transient attack. Simultaneously, the soft, self-dampening top layer eliminates unwanted resonance, so the sound is smooth and articulate. The tweeters come with angled/flush and angled/surface mounting brackets.

    Tweeter Dimensions:

Frame Diameter Cutout Diameter Mounting Height Mounting Depth
    Angled/Flush Mount 2.230" 1.489" 0.950" 0.620"
Angled/Surface Mount 1.844" Screw holes only 1.708" Screw depth only

Crossover: The SC60 system comes with adjustable two-way crossovers. The two crossovers can be mounted separately or docked together and mounted as one piece. You can adjust the tweeter output by placing the supplied jumper on the appropriate terminals; select 0dB (un-attenuated tweeter output), or an attenuated output of -2dB or -4dB. The factory default position is 0dB.

Note: No crossover frequency or slope information was provided by the manufacturer.

    Crossover Dimensions:

    • Length: 6.845"
    • Height: 1.464"
    • Width: 1.705" (mounted individually)
    • Width: 3.324" (docked together)

Installation: The compact size of the magnet allows SC series speakers to fit where other high quality speakers don't. Neodymium magnets offer extraordinary power-to-weight ratio, approximately ten times the magnetic strength of a conventional iron-ferrite magnet of equal size.

VariMount: The Boston SC60s come with several mounting adapters, making it possible to drop the speakers into 6-1/2" and 6-3/4" factory locations. 7⁄16" spacers are also included.

    They are ok

Written By MD, Raleigh, NC on Monday, June 04, 2012
Installed in a 2002 Chevrolet Astro

These have nice low end but poor overall sound quality. Not very very smooth at all out of the box. I added a 31 band eq and now they sound very nice. I would have returned them had I not had that eq option. Not what I expected from the Boston name.

    Excellent Accoustics

Written By Jay, Scottsbluff, NE on Wednesday, May 09, 2012
Installed in a 2008 Toyota Tacoma
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent accoustics in my opinion. I am a musician and appreciate good sound quality while driving. I look for rich bass and midtones. Any quality speaker will provide good high tones, and these perform excellent in that area. Keep in mind that ALL vehicles have differing acoustics inside. Even junk in your car can absorb sound. My car has no junk in it. Haha, but having said that, in a nice clean vehicle with good speaker placement, these speakers are awesome! I have a 2002 Tahoe with a factory deck and only two front speakers replaced with these and I roll like the boys that spent $2000 on their systems. Hope this helps.
    Pros:
Rich Bass, Excellent mid tones and highs
    Cons:
    None

    OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE!

Written By Steve D, Eureka, CA on Sunday, May 06, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed these Boston components in my wife's 2005 Hyundai Sonata. All I can say is......WOW! These speakers have outstanding midrange and treble. The sound is so open and transparent, it's almost like listening to vinyl records.....although not quite that good. Still, amazing sound. It has to be the best car audio speaker system I have ever heard. And I am running these speakers using only the onboard power of a Clarion CZ100 head unit. I plan to install an ampliifer down the road, and as these speakers continue to break in, they should really sing when the amp is installed. I cannot say enough about the sound quality of these speakers.....you would have to spend upwards of several hundred dollars on home speakers to get the transperency that these speakers possess. Boston did a good job on this speaker, and thank you so much Crutchfield for giving me such an outstanding price on the speakers. Greatly appreciated!

Oh...and just a few words on the installation. I'm not sure why so many people that bought these speakers had such a hard time installing them. I did it without reading any of the information supplied by Boston. Component speakers can be challenging for inexperienced installers. They require careful planning, a thorough understanding of audio and electronics, creativity, and an abundance of time to complete the project! The only challenge I encountered was where to install the crossovers...they ended up in the door pockets.
    Pros:
Outstanding transperecy, super super smooth high end and mid-range response. Well-built speakers. Easy to install by an experienced installer. They are also very efficient. Boston Acoustics supplied all the necessary hardware and then some to get the job done.
    Cons:
The size and configuration of the crossover inputs/outputs could be better. if you have trouble finding a location inside the door to install them, try the map pockets, or pick a more suitable location.

    Boston Acoustics SC60 Component Speakers

Written By RichW, Anaheim Hills, CA on Monday, April 30, 2012
    Installed in a 2002 Lexus SC430
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the BA SC60 component system to replace my Mark Levinson/SC430 Coupe component system. Only my door speakers were broken but I bought the entire system thinking it was necessary to perform properly. I got the speakers wired in with the crossovers but the sound was terrible. Fortunately, I didn't permanently install at this point. Since I already had a component system, I took out the crossover connection and kept the Levinson mid range and tweeter. Wow, the sound with the 2-way door speaker was fantastic. Apparently the existing crossover served the purpose so I wired the rest of the system. With both speakers now in, the sound was even better. I now have perfectly good tweeters and crossovers that can't use and don't need. However, for under $200, ( Lexus wanted $347 for one speaker!) I will take the system in a minute and file the experience in the "now that I know" category, not as a system shortcoming. All things considered, the resulting sound is "5 star" to me.
    Pros:
Woofer worked in conjunction with existing tweeter and mid range of my component system. Although some modification was needed to the adapter supplied for free by Crutchfield, it was easy. As a hot rod owner, adapting parts is a given. All I needed was a Dremel tool and a common drill and bits.
    Cons:
Instruction sheets are fine as long as you are a professional installer. They leave something to be desired if you are a DIY'er.

    Improved Sound

Written By Jeff, Denver, CO on Sunday, April 29, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can't believe how this simple change improved my music so much! Do this!
    Pros:
The highs from the tweeters are beyond explanation. The overall clarity has improved 200%.
    Cons:
Not an ordinary install. Plan on extra time to ensure proper placement of the woofers and tweeters.

    Unbelievable Sound "BUT"

Written By richyrich1516, LaGrange, Illinois on Monday, April 02, 2012
    Installed in a 1996 Acura 2.5TL
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am giving the 5 stars only because the Boston's sound soooooo great. I'm 53 and technically/mechanically inclined. Thank god I have those abilities because I had to customize most of the install.. The flush mounts were worthless for the tweeters, The side speakers did not install anything like the install papers had said they would, and the Boston Acoustics doc was worthless.
    Pros:
    The sound is sooooooo Great!
    Cons:
    worthless installation instructions

    great sound-stupid install

Written By Zack, WI on Thursday, January 19, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like many other reviewers before me, I have some of the same complaints and compliments. I will start off by saying that the speakers sound awesome, and thats what really matters right? My biggest gripe is the horrible "flush mount" adaptor that is included. It does no such thing as it claims. Modification is required to actually get a flush mount. If you are to use the "angle mount", no problem. Secondly, the woofer brackets only have three stews/bolt flanges to secure to the door, or in my case to the crutch field provided adaptors. None of the holes remotely lined up and I had to put the screws in at an angle to secure it to the adaptor. It is all worth it after the install though. They really do sound awesome.
    Pros:
Great sound, and tweeters look good mounted on the dash.
    Cons:
A little extra work is needed in some cases to get them to fit nice

    Great Sound---Pain to Install

Written By Dave F, Cloverdale, CA on Thursday, December 15, 2011
Installed in a 2002 Toyota Tundra
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When you complete the installation, the sound might make you forget all the problems you had installing this system.

First off----all the so-called instructions fit on two sides of a single sheet of paper. Now, I've installed maybe a half-dozen car stereos for myself and friends over the years and this was the worst. I was installing to replace a factory tweeter and midrange/woofer on a 2002 Tundra.

The woofer was "supposed" to fit (a 6 1/2" opening) but instead of four mounting holes it only had 3--which required a mounting ring which had no play in the holes. If they had made the ring 1/8" wider with elongated holes there would have been no problem.

The tweeter came with a supposed flush mount and surface mount---again very poor instructions. As there was already a tweeter in the factory set up, it would have been great if they had a third option of a spacer that could be cut to support the tweeter in an existing location.

The biggest problem was finding a location for the crossover unit----about double the size of a super-sized Snickers bar. It they had made this flatter or shrunk the overall size, it would have been much easier.

While I'll never have to install these speakers again, I cannot in good conscience give them a top rating even if their sound is great.
    Pros:
The sound is spectacular!! No other way to say it. Treble is crisp and clear with good base.
    Cons:
Installation was a roaring pain! Horrible instructions, if you can call them that.

    Best Car Speakers, Hands Down!

Written By JD, United States on Wednesday, March 09, 2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Back in 1999, I put Boston Acoustics in a Chevy Silverado with an Alpine system. They are still putting out crystal clear sound for my 18 yr old. I installed back in '09 a new aftermarket system in my '06 GMC. Was the first and last aftermarket sound system since 1982 that was "NOT" Alpine. Also the speakers were Infinity. Never again. I just put in Boston Acoustic with an Alpine deck. The Boston Acoustics are still an awesome product! Hard to touch the clarity of sound they reproduce. And by the way, I'm 50 years old. Still gotta have quality tunes with me after all these years!

Installed a set in my daughters car. Combined them with a set of Boston Acoustics 5x7 in the back and hooked them up to a 4x30 Kenwood amp. Also installed a Bazooka tube in the trunk. The speakers offer no bottom end but thats what the sub is for. The sound is very crisp and clean. I turned the high pass filter on the Kenwood head unit to 100hz. When I first hooked them to the factory radio and no amplification I wasn't pleased at all. After everything was hooked up I am very impressed. Thinking about putting a set in my truck now. My daughter is very happy and cranks every where she goes. Hooked up right, you won't be disappointed.

    Great Sound

Written By Anonymous, Ocala, FL on Monday, June 28, 2010

I replaced the shaker 500 door speakers with these in my 06 Mustang convertable. I'm powering them off a clarion 409. Initiallty I thought one of the shakers was blown, it turned out there was a really loose speed nut that I siliconed in place.

Installing the Boston SC60s was very easy because they have such comprehensive accessories, pre-tinned wires, foam gaskets, vinyl washers, crimp connectors for splices, quick connects on the woofer. As the other reviewer said, the crossover appear designed for 18 22awg cabel. Anything larger will be difficult.

After putting both the woofer and the tweeter in the stock 6x8 opening (made and adapter plate), I put sound deadedning on the inner door skins, and secured anything that could possibly rattle.

The sound is way more detailed without being shrill. Its a smooth sound, that I can enjoy with the volume low or high.

Please be aware, the kit doesn't come with traditional flush mount adapters, only angle mounts. Maybe there is a way to use them flush, but I couldnt' figure it out. I didn't need it for my application, the angle worked even better, but for someone it could be a big issue.

    Great Sound - But

Written By Anonymous, Ohio on Friday, February 19, 2010
Installed in a 2008 Toyota Tacoma
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Recently purchased these for my factory Tacoma replacements.
    My setup:
Pioneer Premier FH-P800BT, Fosgate Punch P400-4 Amp with Boston Acoustics SC60's in the front and JVC Arsenal CSAR650's in the back.

The Boston's sound great. No ifs ands or buts about the sound. The crossover, however, was a pain the 6 to wire. Expecially if you are using thicker gauge speaker wire. If you buy these, have an extra 5 or so feet of smaller gauge speaker wire to go from tweeter/woofer to xover.
