Alpine

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Our take on the Alpine MRX-V60

by Buck Pomerantz

Alpine's X-Power amplifiers use the latest amp technology to play your music loud and clean without taking up much space. And these super-compact amps employ some of the same circuitry developed for Alpine's top-of-the-line PDX digital amps, so they'll bring exceptional sound to almost any ride.

One amp for your entire system
The MRX-V60 5-channel amp can take care of all four of your car's speakers and a sub too. The 4-channel section puts out 50 watts RMS to each of your full-range speakers, so you'll have plenty of volume to fill your listening space with clear music. You can even use it in 2-channel mode to drive a pair of components with 150 watts each. Onboard frequency filters let you tailor the output to fit your setup.

The bass channel
The MRX-V60 also features a fifth channel that'll pump out up to 300 watts RMS to your subwoofer. You can use the low-pass and subsonic filters to adjust the character of your bass, while a bass boost helps to fatten up the sound if needed.

A power management system optimizes the amp's performance and keeps the music playing, even when you're pushing it hot and hard for a long time. Speaker-level inputs with an automatic turn-on feature simplify system hook-up.

    Features

MRX Amplifier Design: Class-D amplifiers boast higher efficiency, produce less heat, and draw less current than traditional Class-AB amps. The new MRX series benefits from the technology trickledown from Alpine's more expensive PDX amps, including Direct FET final outputs, thermal management processor, 6-Layer Glass Epoxy PC Board; combining to create a high-end sound quality without the bulky heat sinks required by most amps in this power class.

STAR Topology: Alpine's unique STAR (Signal Transit for Accurate Response) Circuit PCB design provides a single common ground for all amp sub-blocks, preventing ground interference and minimizing internal noise.

Power Management Processor: The multi-stage Power Management Processor continuously monitors component temperatures throughout the amplifier and decreases power output if anything gets too hot. When playing music under heavy loads for long periods, the circuit automatically reduces power output slightly at first, and then further in a second stage if necessary. This two stage approach provides an interruption free listening experience.

Multi-Channel Design: The Alpine MRX-V60 is a 5-channel amplifier, basically two independent 2-channel amplifiers (front and rear) plus a mono subwoofer amplifier built into one chassis. Either the front or rear amp can be bridged so it can be used as a 5-channel, 4-channel, or 3-channel amplifier. The amplifier is stable down to 2-ohms in stereo, 2-ohms on the subwoofer output, and 4-ohms when bridged.

CEA 2006 Compliant: The MRX-V60's power ratings are measured according to the Consumer Electronics Association CEA-2006 standards. These standards allow you to accurately compare the rated power output of all CEA 2006-compliant amplifiers, even different brands. Manufacturers who adhere to the standards can display the CEA 2006 logo on their products and packaging.

    • Front and Rear Channels:
      • 4-ohm: 50 watts per channel measured from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz with no more than 0.07% THD+N
      • 2-ohm: 75 watts per channel measured from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz with no more than 0.09% THD+N
      • Bridged (4-ohm): 150 watts measured from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz with no more than 0.09% THD+N
    • Subwoofer Channel:
      • 4-ohm: 200 watts measured from 20 Hz to 400 Hz with no more than 0.04% THD+N
      • 2-ohm: 300 watts measured from 20 Hz to 400 Hz with no more than 0.06% THD+N

Signal-to-Noise: When measured under CEA-2006 conditions (reference 1 watt into a 4-ohm load) the signal to noise ratio is 87 dBA. Measured at the rated power output S/N is 104 dB for the front and rear channels and 110 dB for the subwoofer channel.

Verification Certificate: The amplifier comes with a certificate that lists the RMS power output measured from that specific amplifier. It also lists the model number, serial number, test date, and the test conditions (voltage and impedance).

Wide Frequency Response: The Alpine MRX-V60 offers a wide frequency range (5 Hz-45 kHz, +0/-3 dB), much wider than the range of human hearing.

Auto Turn On: When using the speaker level inputs the X-Power amplifiers automatically turn on when voltage is detected on the signal inputs, making them an easy factory system upgrade.

Low Output Impedance: With low output impedance, the MRX-V60 outputs tightly controlled bass, with a damping Factor rated at greater than 500 for the front and rear channels, greater than 1000 for the subwoofer channel.

LED: The top panel LED power indicator glows blue when the amplifier is turned on.

    Controls

Gain: The MRX-V60 provides independent rotary controls for the front, rear, and subwoofer channels to set the amplifier's gain according to the level of the incoming signal. The line-level input gain settings are continuously variable from 200 mV to 4.0V; the speaker-level input gain settings are continuously variable from 500 mV to 10.0V.

Crossovers: The amplifier features independent crossovers for the front, rear, and sub channels:

    • Front: the front channels have a high pass crossover that can be turned on/off; the crossover point is continuously variable from 50 to 400 Hz and the slope is 12 dB/oct
    • Rear: the rear channels have a high pass crossover that can be turned on/off; the crossover point is continuously variable from 50 to 400 Hz and the slope is 12 dB/oct
    • Sub: the subwoofer's low-pass crossover cannot be bypassed; it's continuously variable from 50 to 400 Hz and the slope is 12 dB/oct

Subsonic Filter: The subwoofer section also has a 24 dB/oct subsonic filter, continuously variable from 5 to 30 Hz.

Channel 3/4 Input: Select 3/4 (front and rear inputs are independent) or 1/2 (the front inputs supply signal to the front and rear channels and no Y adapters are needed).

Subwoofer Input: Select the subwoofer's RCA input, or have the signal supplied by the sum of the other four channel inputs.

Bass EQ: Bass boost can be applied to the subwoofer channel; it's variable from 0 to +12 dB and centered at 50 Hz.

    Connections

Power/Ground/Remote: The MRX-V60 features set-screw terminals for the Power, Ground and Remote Turn-on inputs. The Power and Ground terminals will accommodate up to 4 gauge wire (Alpine recommends 4 gauge minimum), the Remote Turn-on terminal will accept up to 8 gauge wire.

Speaker Outputs: The screw terminal speaker outputs accept spade connectors up to 0.33" wide.

Line Level Input: The Alpine MRX-V60 has SIX female RCA jacks labeled CH1/CH2 (front), CH3/CH4 (rear), and Sub R/L.

Speaker Level Input: Use the included speaker level input harnesses if the connected radio has no preamp outputs.

Fuses: The amp is protected by two chassis mounted 30-amp ATO fuses.

Remote Bass Control (optional): Alpine's wired remote (item number 500RUXKNOB, sold separately) offers control of the subwoofer output level from the front of your vehicle for remote bass adjustments.

    Wow

Written By Madmaxximus, Long Island, NY on Saturday, June 23, 2012

Installed in a 2009 Honda Accord Coupe (along with the Alpine CDE-137BT head unit and Polk DB651s's) on the back of the fold down panel of rear seats. After my installer was having some initial issues with the grounding, in which the unit cut itself off after a short time) he got it all figured out and OMG this little puppy is sweet. Initially I needed to "hear" my radio at 28 on the factory "7 speaker premium audio system". With this unit it's around 20 and I really can't go above 25 without needing Advil. So far, just phenomenal. And this is WITHOUT a sub, which is coming in a few days...
    Pros:
Clean Power 5 Channels Settings Galore
    Cons:
Seems a little finicky with grounding, but it might be user error.

    good replacement amp

Written By Corey, Pittsburgh,PA on Tuesday, February 07, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this amp to replace a dying Xtant 33oox. With all the controls and extra pieces you could buy with the old Xtant, I was a little nervous about buying a more simpler amp. I have a single 12" sub, and factory speakers in the car. The sound is impressive with the stock speakers. I look forward to replacing those in the future. The sub channel is more than sufficient. It does take some tweaking to get it right. In my 2011 Chevy Malibu, the door/ warning 'bells' are hooked up to the amplifier, since the sounds go through the speakers. So, cranking the input levels only raises the noise level of the 'bells'. But that's not the amp's fault. A thicker power wire is recommended, and I would agree. Good amp for the money, figuring my old Xtant "5" channel went for around $1000 back in the days....
    Pros:
small size, fits almost anywhere. Powerful for its size
    Cons:
    small adjustment/controls area.

    Great value

Written By SD_A4, San Diego, CA on Thursday, February 02, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp is under-rated and really cranks out crisp, clear sound. Birth sheet lists the full range channels at 117W and the sub channel at 375W. I bridged the 4 channels to CDT components in front and two CDT subs wired in parallel in the rear. My system slams! Gains are set to only 1/2, there's lots of headroom left. As it is, it's deafening at full volume.
    Pros:
Great bang for the buck. Small size. Does not overheat in enclosed space.
    Cons:
Controls difficult to see. Manual is worthless.

    This Time Size Doesn't Matter

Written By GoSteelers, Pittsburgh,PA on Saturday, October 01, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a lot of amp in a small package. We installed it in a 2008 Mazda 6, kept the factory head and ran it off the speaker level outputs. It auto powers when it senses signal off the head (as advertised), and we installed the optional dash-mounted sub volume control. The Alpine Certification measured the four channels at 116w each and the sub output at 403w at 2-ohms - looks like Alpine might be one of the few manufacturers underrating its amps in their marketing materials. This amp is driving two 10" Polk subs in the trunk with Boston Acoustics component and Alpine coax speakers in the cockpit. The individual gain and crossover points allow you to configure the sound perfectly for the cabin so the head unit doesn't have to "color" the bass and treble. Incredible sound.

    Big sound, itty bitty size!

Written By JasonH., Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday, July 06, 2011

First off, I just have to say how small this amp is! This particular amplifier won The Innovations Honors award at CES 2011! My birth certificate has this amp doing 101w x 4 and 401w for the sub at 2 ohm RMS. The sound quality is phenomenal! It makes my infinity Kappa's sing with delight! I have been into car audio since the early 90's, and I have never heard a digital amplifier have such a clean and uncolored sound. To me the sound almost has a tube quality to it. You will not be disappointed with this! Rock on Alpine!!!!!

Not a Bad 5 Channel Choice

Written By Scotty, Los Angeles, CA on Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Based on the price, these new X-powered 5-Channel amps are not a bad way to go if you want a decent aftermarket system. Although keep in mind, the power rating may be too underpowered for many users needs. You only get 50x4 RMS watts for the 4 speakers and a barely adequate 300 watts for the subwoofer channel (and only @ 2 ohms). The crossovers options on the 4 other channels are either off or high pass only which can limit your bridging abilities. While I was able to get this amp to run on quality 8 Gauge cable, the manufacture wants you to run 4 gauge, which can be an issue for some. This amp is very similar to the PDX-5 by Alpine but with lower power ratings. I still think the most versatile way to go (cost-wise) is to get a dedicated sub woofer amp and a 4-channel system. That way you can get a 100x4 4 channel and around 500 Watt subwooer amp for nearly the same price. But for someone who just wants a simple 4+ subwoofer setup (Single 10" or 8"), and not deal with extra cables and amps this may be a good way to go.

    Small but Mighty

Written By M Childs, Wichita, KS on Sunday, May 22, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Do not let the size of this amp fool you, it is without a doubt one of the best amps I've had the pleasure of listening to. The 5-channel capability is well suited for most applications and has more than enough power to drive a wide variety of speakers. I've got an Alpine head unit, 2 ohm Infinity speakers front and rear and a single 4 ohm 8" JL sub that incredably sounds like a pair of 10's. The ability to set gain and crossover points for for each zone allows you to dial the sound in to match the specific space of whatever vehicle you drive.
