Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Alpine CDE-9872

by Robert Ferency-Viars
Alpine Authorized On-line Dealer

Alpine's CDE-9872 CD receiver offers the convenience of MP3 playback, a strong built-in amplifier, and a detachable face for security. The Bass Engine® features highly adjustable bass and treble controls that allow you to tune the stereo's sound to perfection.

Add Alpine's optional "Full Speed" connection cable and you'll be able to use the CDE-9872 to control your iPod®. Alpine has invented a great way of finding the right song on your playlist quickly — the "percentage search" feature uses the radio preset buttons to jump over a designated percentage (0, 17, 33, 50, 67, or 83 percent) of your playlist.

The set of preamp outputs eases the job of adding an external amplifier to your system. When adding a subwoofer, switch the outputs to subwoofer mode, and Bass Engine also lets you adjust the bass level directly from the stereo. You can activate the high-pass filter for the speaker outputs to block the low bass that your regular speakers can't handle, increasing your system's efficiency.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

      Features

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association. All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

MP3 Playback: This unit can play CD-R and CD-RW discs containing MP3 files formatted with ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2, using Joliet, Romeo, or other ISO 9660 compliant formats. Discs containing both standard CD audio and MP3 files can be played; the unit may be set to play only the CD audio tracks or both types of tracks. ID3 tag v1 and v2 are supported; track title, artist name, and album name data can be displayed. The following sampling rates and bit rates (constant and variable) are supported:

      • MP3:
        • Sampling rates: 48, 44.1, 32, 24, 22.05, 16, 12, 11.025, and 8 kHz
        • Bit rates: 8-320 kbps

Sound: The Sound Setting functions provide control over your system, so you can tailor the sound to your personal tastes:

      • Bass Control:
        • Bass Center Frequency: 60Hz, 80Hz (default), 100Hz, or 200Hz
        • Bass Band Width: 1 (narrow) to 4 (wide)
        • Bass Level: -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
      • Treble Control:
        • Treble Center Frequency: 10kHz (default), 12.5kHz, 15kHz, or 17.5kHz
        • Treble Level: -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
      • High Pass Filter (HPF): speaker level outputs have a selectable crossover (HPF); off (default), 80Hz, 120Hz, or 160Hz
      • Loudness: on/off
      • Defeat On/Off: reset the unit to its factory default bass, treble, loudness, and HPF settings by turning on the Defeat function

Switchable Pre-out: The preamp output can be switched from "Front" to a non-fading subwoofer preamp output with a variable level of 0 to +15. When the subwoofer is activated in the Setup menu, the pre-out is switched at the same time. When the subwoofer is deactivated, the pre-out is switched back to a front channel output.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead. When the unit's dimmer mode has been set to Auto and the illumination lead has been connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the button illumination is dim at all times.

Power IC Off: When an external amplifier is powering all the speakers in the system, you can turn the internal amp off, which will improve the sound quality.

Angle Mounting: Alpine recommends mounting the CDE-9872 no more that 35° above horizontal.

      External Device Controls

iPod Full Speed: The CDE-9872 has an iPod Direct Connection mounted on a 4" pigtail on the rear panel. When used with the optional KCE-422i Alpine Full Speed Connection cable (item number 500KCE422i), your receiver can interface with Apple iPods with a dock connector. Compatible iPods include fourth and fifth generation iPod, first and second generation iPod nano, iPod photo, and iPod mini. You can quickly and easily search through all of the music contained on your iPod through Playlist, Artist, or Album searches. You can view Artist, Album, Song Information and Song Number right on the head unit's display. When operating your iPod through the Full Speed connection, you can use the Direct Search function in Playlist, Artist, Album, or Song mode to quickly locate your music. Using the unit's preset buttons, you can quickly jump over a designated percentage of your song content (Preset 1: 0% to 16%, Preset 2: 17% to 32%, Preset 3: 33% to 49%, Preset 4: 50% to 66%, Preset 5: 67% to 82%, Preset 6: 83% to 100% of the song library). The unit can be used with the following iPod models - iPod mini (1st, 2nd generation), iPod nano (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation), Fourth generation iPod photo, Fifth generation iPod video, iPod classic (80, 120, 160GB) and iPod touch (1st, 2nd generation).

Note: The optional KCE-422i cable will not charge the iPod nano 4th generation or iPod touch 2nd generation. The cable cannot be used with iPod software versions earlier than "2006-06-28". For details about "iPod Software Update", refer to the iPod's Instruction Manual.

Bluetooth Interface Ready: Using the Alpine KCE-400BT Bluetooth adapter (500KCE400B, sold separately) with the KWE-460E interconnect cable adapter (500KWE460E, sold separately), you can make and receive calls hands-free on your Bluetooth-capable cellular phone, and communicate through a microphone (included with the Bluetooth interface) and your vehicle's speakers.

Note: The Pass-Through port of the KCE-400BT allows you to connect the Bluetooth adapter as well as an iPod to the CDE-9872. The KWE-460 interconnection cable is still required along with a KCE-433iV Full Speed iPod connection cable (500KCE433I, sold separately). In this case the KCE-422i cable will not be needed.

      Outstanding Head Unit

Written By christopher, Janesville WI on Sunday, January 24, 2010

I bought this cd player in March of 2007. Relatively cheep for my first cd player and was very impressed with it. Easy to use, tons of features, installation was simple, and the sound quality is amazing. I have this hooked up in my 98 Eclipse along with 2 10" pioneer subs and an 800 watt amp and everything hits hard and sounds amazing. with this cd player you can adjust your bass, treble, the sub-woofer volume, how hard it hits, the amount of bass going to your speakers. Simply amazing. I would buy this cd player all over again. Excellent

      Great Basic Headunit

Written By Sacha, Arlington, VA on Friday, April 03, 2009
Installed in a 1994 Subaru Legacy
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed an inexpensive headunit to replace my old Pioneer. Alpines have a great reputation, and since the price was right I decided on the CDE-9872. For the price the unit has a decent feature set and sound. My only complaints are: no front auxiliary input, clock doesn't show when the unit is off (with ignition on but there may be a setting I haven't found), and the volume controls are buttons not a knob.

These are minor complaints and all around this is a very good product. Sounds good, feels well made, controls are fairly straight forward, attractive layout (so many headunits are tacky and over done), works well with my iPod (single line display is the only drawback. If you are looking for a basic headunit that does not skimp on sound or quality then this is one to consider.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a previous alpine that was similar to this and loved it. I got this for my other car and upon first setup I wasn't to impressed. I then tweaked the bass and treble frequency(coolest feature ever) and this thing now rocks! I have just stock speakers and was going to change those out but with this head unit, it made them come alive. for the price, ipod controls, sub control you can't do better.

I bought this head unit for my son's first "system" great value for the price with alpine quality behind the unit. Install was clean and easy with the kit, harness and ipod cable (this is a must). we installed a kicker comp 10, orion 500 amp in a reg cab ranger, and it sounds great. Alot of bang for the buck.

      great unit for the cost

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very pleased with the quality of this unit at such a wallet friendly price. It was a very easy install and looks great in my 2007 ford f150. definately makes the dashboard alot sharper looking. Outstanding installation sheets provided by crutchfield. Very pleased with the product, service, and fast shipping. Definately would recommend this unit to anyone not looking for something too fancy but a good looking quality alpine. The sound is outstanding with my pioneer 6x8 speakers in all 4 doors as well and the alpine 10'' sub run by an alpine 500 watt mono amp. enough power for the size of the truck.

Everything in the box as advertised. Installation was easy for me as I'm an auto technician. Even the inexperienced shouldn't have a problem with the detailed instructions provided. Sounds as good as the higher end alpine I replaced (the left front speaker output quit working) This was my first purchase from Crutchfield and I will make my next audio purchase here ! Only took 3 days from ordering to receive my package. Keep up the good work.

A great entry level head unit

Written By Kaspar, Omaha, NE on Saturday, March 07, 2009
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this head unit for listening to the radio and playing audio/mp3 cds.
I don't care about i-pod support, hd radio, gps, watching movies and all of
the other bells and whistles that come on higher end units. There are 12
channels total to program for FM and 6 for AM. The EQ parameters let you
adjust the bass, treble and subwoofer if you have one. The faceplate is
also detachable. It's was easy to install and Crutchfield included everything
needed. This head unit is exactly what I wanted which was a basic head
unit that is simple to use.

      iPod done right

Written By Maury, Coaldale, PA on Thursday, February 26, 2009
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I tried the Kenwood Excelon first, but reaching to the right hand side knob/toggle switch made it dangerously impossible to navigate my iPod while driving. I tried the Alpine IDA X-200 next, and sound was FAR superior, but using that huge center knob meant blocking my view of the LCD screen with my hand. This 9872 seems to be everything I wanted in an iPod controller... sounds identical to the x200, screen is well-lit and easy to view, finding my first playlist is a couple easy push-buttons on the left (no nasty knobs that double as joysticks, etc) and once I'm listenting to the first song, I can browse up or down playlists by pushing #1up or #2down. Beautiful! This deck even works with my 1st generation iPhone AND harges it. Crutchfield support was awesome before, during and after the sale. There is ONE caution I want to make note of... Crutchfield sold me the Scosche OEM adapter to step down the power to my car's Bose powered speakers, but even with that adapter's gain turned all the way up it sounded thin compared to the stock Clarion. Crutchfield techs recommended I try to bypass that adapter and the sound is SO much better without the adapter. If you're buying here, and they try and say you NEED the adapter, ask them to be sure.

      Alpine Good

Written By Kendon, BR, LA on Tuesday, January 27, 2009

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

With all the extras Crutchfield sent, installation was a breeze. The unit performs as expected, which is great. I've been an Alpine headunit user since I began installing car audio equipment almost 10 years ago and the dependability and quality has been unmatched. The last Alpine CD player I bought is still in my old Geo that I gave to my brother and is still running as good as the day I got it. This one I've only had for 2 months but have had no complaints except for 1. I wouldn't recommend purchasing this unit with the intention of hooking up an iPhone. It has caused my iPhone to freeze up every other time I attach it. But a quick reset fixes that. All-in-all, this unit is well worth the price.

      Great Unit, No Aux Jack.

Written By Ty, Houston, TX on Monday, January 26, 2009
Installed in a 1992 Ford Explorer
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Alpine head unit was completely enjoyable to me up to the point of a recent purchase of a 120GB player. Now, I need an auxiliary jack to connect my MP3 player to my car stereo, and this Alpine doesn't have it. My other vehicles have factory aux jacks which work perfectly, and after trying an FM transmitter unit and not getting the crystal clear audio I demand, a head unit with an aux is mandatory. I could, of course, have purchased an iPod product and used this stereo without any hiccups, but I like this MP3 player more. So, I'm looking at the Pioneer P3100 to replace it, soonest. For using in a third vehicle that I don't really drive that often, I'm rather amused at my doggedness to achieve audio satisfaction in it...Such is the life of a once AR audiophile who used to spend way too much money on car stereos trying to save some for once. Speaking of saving all the frogskins that I can, Crutchfield's free installation packages and excellent instructions are always wonderful, and their service is second to none!

      Solid

Written By 09FordRanger, Tempe, AZ on Monday, December 01, 2008
Installed in a 2008 Ford Ranger
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This a great unit and honestly the only Alpine I would consider buying...

For an entry level unit, it offers everything I need and more importantly its one of the easiest units to use and navigate through the buttons and setup.

I've used Pioneer Head-Units for almost 10 years exclusively for the fact they offer more features in the same price point. They don't make you pay extra for features that should come standard with the higher end Alpine units.

With that being said, the entry level Alpine is actually superior to the entry level Pioneer DEH-2000mp, with having a better S/N ratio on the CD player, slightly more powerful power output, Ipod direct control and actually offering a High-Pass crossover (I only wish it started at 60hz and not 80hz).

Lastly my last gripe about Alpine, I wish they would offer the illumination options that are offered on the European models in the US....

      Alpine CDE-9872

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was my first purchase through Crutchfield and I was extremely
impressed. For the price I paid for this CD player, it was really worth the
price. I would have expected to pay more for this headunit than I did. It
was an early Christmas present for my father and his 04 Chrysler T&C. The
old indash 6 disc was all messed up so this user friendly replacement was
exactly what was needed. I know exactly where I will buy all my electronics
      from here on out!

      Alpine CDE-9872

Installed in a 1992 Toyota Corolla
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When my last Alpine CD player finally died after many, many years, I wanted to replace it with something that would give me good quality sound and which would be easy to operate when I was driving. This product fully met my expectations. I learned more about removing body panels to get to the old receiver/CD player than I ever wanted to know, but the directions were quite clear. The supplied wiring harness made the hookup very straightforward.

Contacted Crutchfield looking for a simple to use CD player for my father. Specified it had to have an easy to see, clear display, easy to use features and good sound. As usual the crutchfield team came through again. A perfect fit, easy install with all necessary parts. I buy all my electronics from Crutchfield, no questions asked, excellent customer service and great products. An easy decision.

Bought it because I needed a simple solution in my Tacoma to fill where the tape deck once was. Details were very clear in directions and was in all honesty common sense. Sound wise I rate this unit to be above average... for my expectations and my sort of music.

My grandson installed this in my mercedes slk in less than a half hour. Everyone in my family was very impressed with the sound. I like everything about it. It has every thing I wanted for a very reasonable price.
