Receivers: Your ticket to sensational sound

Your receiver powers your speakers and lets you connect and select your entertainment sources. But a great receiver does a lot more — it ignites your emotions. From the passion of a favorite musical artist, to the crossfire of a super-charged movie soundtrack, to the intensity and immersion of a fast-paced video game, your receiver is the key to experiencing and enjoying it in full.

Our take on the Denon AVR-1513

by Marshall Chase
3D TV Learn more

With over a century in the audio business, Denon knows a thing or two about good sound. That's why you can count on their affordably priced AVR-1513 receiver to deliver solid home theater performance for years to come.

3D-ready HDMI audio/video switching

The AVR-1513's HDMI inputs let you connect up to four high-definition sources for convenient switching, like a gaming console, Blu-ray player, HD cable box and more. With 3D Blu-ray compatibility, you're all set to enjoy today's films in your own home.

Simplicity and convenience

The front panel of many home theater receivers can be difficult to navigate. The AVR-1513 is made to use, not confuse. You'll find just a volume knob and a few other controls. There's an HDMI input to connect a compatible camcorder and a minijack input to enjoy music from anything with a headphone jack.

Denon's GUI (Graphic User Interface) displays the receiver's menus on your HDTV via HDMI. The menus are intuitive and become readable shown on your big screen. Use the included receiver remote to make your way around.

The wizard will see you now

Denon knows that what you're looking for in the AVR-1513 is great entertainment, not a crash course in home theater system design. That's why they included their first-time setup wizard. Just plug the receiver into power and connect it to your TV with HDMI and the '1513 guides you through the rest. From connecting components to setting up your remote, the wizard will navigate for you. No need to solve cryptic manual riddles or a game of "Guess where the plug goes?" Instead you'll be up and running in no time.

      Audio Features

Equal Power Amp Design w Discrete Circuitry: The Denon AVR-1513 is equipped with a 5 channel power amplifier rated at 75-watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20kHz, with 0.08% THD, driving 2 channels) that reproduces high-fidelity sound in surround mode with equal quality and power for all channels, true to the original sound. The power amplifier circuit adopts a discrete-circuit configuration that achieves high-quality surround sound reproduction. To faithfully reproduce the original surround sound, each of the Denon AVR-1513's five channels are equipped with its own high-current power amp of equal power. Since these power amps also use discrete circuits configured with parts strictly selected for their contribution to high sound quality, rather than with low-cost integrated circuits (ICs), the surround sound playback is of impeccably high quality.

High-Quality Construction: The Denon AVR-1513 offers a minimum signal path design and direct mechanical ground construction, with independent power supplies for high-quality sound.

      • Minimum Signal Path Design: The simple & straight design concept has been thoroughly implemented in the signal paths to contribute to clean audio and video playback. Signal paths are as short as possible to keep signal degradation in the audio and video circuitry to a minimum.
      • Direct Mechanical Ground Construction: Vibration-resistant construction has been used to suppress the adverse influences of vibration on sound quality. The power transformers, a source of vibration, have been securely mounted on the high rigid bottom chassis. Direct mounting of cast-iron feet to the radiator in near proximity to each other serves to suppress mutual vibration with the power transformers and other sources of vibration.
      • Independent Power Supplies: The Denon AVR-1513 employs independent stable power supplies for high-quality sound and picture playback.

24-bit/192-kHz DACs: This receiver is equipped with AKM Semiconductor 24-bit/192-kHz (AK4358VQ) DACs to decode and playback high-resolution recordings with less jitter and  clearer sound.

32-Bit Processing DSP: The Denon AVR1513 is equipped with a Crystal Logic 32-bit DSP (CS497024) for powerful and highly accurate surround sound reproduction.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Denon AVR-3313CI AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note:  Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). Even though the AV receiver will decode 7.1channel surround sound (via HDMI), it will only output 5.1ch surround, because it lacks Surround Back channel speaker outputs.

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:

      • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:
        • Panorama: Broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu.
        • Dimension: Allows you to move the sound field forward or backward.
        • Center Width: Allows you to adjust the width of the center channel.
      • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).

Denon Original Listening Modes: Denon's Original Listening Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. You can choose from the following:

      • Rock Arena: For rock and popular music sources, this mode surrounds you with reflected sound of the kind you would hear at a live concert.
      • Jazz Club: This mode recreates the atmosphere of a live house where the ceiling is low and you are enveloped with rich doses of reflected sound.
      • Matrix: With this mode, you can add rich reflected sound to 2-channel stereo music sources where reflected sound is normally not audible.
      • Video Game: This mode is suited for achieving surround sound with video games..
      • Mono Movie: This mode is used when you listen to recorded monaural sound sources such as AM radio broadcasts or news programs from the center speaker.
      • Virtual: Enjoy surround effects using only the front speakers or set of headphones.
      • Multichannel Stereo: Left and right stereo channels are distributed to all the speakers so that stereo sound can be heard from all directions at any listening position.

Direct Listening Modes: The Denon AVR-3313CI offers two Direct Listening Modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. Direct Mode provides playback of 2ch or Multichannel audio in its original form, without any surround or tone processing. Pure Direct Mode goes a step further by turning off the receiver's display and analog video circuitry to minimize the possibility of any noised being added to the audio signal.

Speaker Setup: You can  setup your speaker system manually using the receiver's on-screen menu.

      • Speaker Configuration: Select speaker configuration and size (large/small/none), as well as subwoofer (yes/no).
      • Bass Setting: Set subwoofer and LFE signal range playback (LFE/LFE+Main).
      • Distance: Set distance (0-60') from listening position to speakers.
      • Channel Level: Set the volume (+/-12dB) of the test tone to be the same when it is output from each speaker.
      • Crossover Frequency: Set the maximum frequency (40/60/80/90/100/110/120/150/200/250Hz) of the bass signal output from each channel to the subwoofer.

Tone Settings: You can independently adjust the system's overall Bass and Treble settings from -6 to +6 dB. You can also fade the sound from front to rear, or vice-versa.

Restorer: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio), and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The Restorer function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals.

Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.

Night Mode: The Night Mode optimizes sound for late night listening. This function can be set to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.

      Volume Settings:

      • Volume Scale: You can choose to display an Absolute volume scale (0-98) or Relative volume scale (-79.5 to 18dB).
      • Volume Limit: You can set a maximum volume level of 0, -10, or -20 dB to limit the receiver's total volume output.
      • Turn-On Volume: You can define the volume setting that is active when the power is turned on (0, 1-98, -79 to +18dB, or Last)
      • Mute Level: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Denon AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

      • Assignable Digital Inputs: The AVR-1513 features an optical digital (Toslink) input and a coaxial digital input. Each input can be assigned to any of the different input sources except Tuner.
      • Speaker Terminals: The receiver has spring-clip terminals for all speaker connections. The spring-clip terminals can accept bare wire and pin connectors. The receiver will accept speaker impedances of 6 to 16-ohm.
      • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.
      • Aux Input: The AVR-1513 is fitted with a front-panel 3.5mm auxiliary input to connect your external portable audio device, such as your MP3 player.

AM/FM Tuner: The Denon AV receiver features a built-in AM/FM tuner with 56 station auto-preset memory tuning. You can also set your presets manually.

      Video Features

HDMI (v1.4): With four HDMI v1.4 inputs (3 rear/1 front), the AVR-1513 allows you to route multiple high-definition devices, like game consoles and Blu-ray players, to your TV. It also allows you to connect all of your devices to your TV with a single HDMI cable (via its HDMI monitor output), reducing cable clutter. The HDMI inputs are assignable to different input sources. They support HDCP copyright protection and are compatible with 3D signals, Deep Color, xvYCC technology, and LipSync.

3D Pass-Through: With the advent of 3D media, it is important to own a receiver that recognizes 3D video signals. The AVR-1513 is able to pass through 3D signals from your Blu-ray player, ensuring that the 3D effect doesn't get lost in translation. It also recognizes signals from 3D television broadcasts. By connecting a 3D-compliant Blu-ray disc player and 3D-compliant TV to the AVR-1513, you will have a 3D home theater where you can enjoy high-definition sound and video on a level you've never experienced before.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: When enabling the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "On" or in "Standby" both audio/video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver's HDMI monitor output. You can select between three HDMI through function modes.

      • HDMI Input: Selects the HDMI Input (1-4) for which the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled.
      • Last: The HDMI Standby-Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "Standby" mode.
      • Off: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is disabled.

Deep Color & x.v.Color Support: The AVR-1513 also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture

LipSync: If needed, the audio signal can be manually delayed to match the video signal; adjust from 0-200ms.

Analog Video Inputs: The receiver features two composite video inputs and one composite video monitor output. You must connect the receiver to your TV via composite video to view incoming video from the receiver's composite inputs. There are no component video inputs or outputs.

Video Select Function: You can switch the video input source on the receiver while listening to a different audio signal.

      Convenience Features

On-Screen Menu (via HDMI): The AV receiver's on-screen display provides quick information about your system's settings. You can easily make settings for your home theater system while viewing menus on the TV screen.  Simple settings are enabled with the setting menus displayed on the TV screen. When you control the sound volume, the volume level is displayed on the screen, and when you switch the input source, the name of the input source is displayed. These menu displays can be output to your TV via HDMI. If you connect the receiver to your television via only composite video, you will need to use the A/V receiver's front-panel display for menu and source adjustments.

Front-Panel Display Dimmer: The receiver features 4 display settings for the front-panel LCD window; Bright, Dim, Dark, and Off.

Sleep Timer: This function allows you to automatically set the power to standby after a predetermined amount of time has passed; set the sleep timer up to 120 minutes in 10 minute increments.

Personal Memory Plus: For each input, the receiver automatically memorizes the settings for input mode, surround mode, HDMI output mode, audio delay, etc. When the input source is switched, the settings last used for that source are automatically recalled. The surround parameters, tone control settings, and playback levels for the different output channels are memorized for each surround mode.

iPod/iPhone Connectivity (optional): Using an optional iPod dock (ASD-11R, sold separately) you can integrate your iPod/iPhone with the AVR-1513. You will continue to use your iPod/iPhone to navigate your stored music. The dock features an S-video output, if you television is equipped with an S-video input (the receiver has no S-video input/output).

Auto Standby: The unit enters standby mode automatically when no commands are sent to the unit for the set time (2, 4, or 8 hours). Before it enters the standby mode, "Auto Standby" is displayed on the front-panel display of this unit and the on-screen menu.

Protection Circuit: This is a function to prevent damage to components within the power supply when an abnormality such as an overload, excess voltage, or over-heating occurs. In this unit, the power indicator blinks and the unit enters standby mode when an abnormality occurs.

      Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The AVR-1513 comes with an IR wireless remote control that can operate this receiver only. The remote control features Glow keys so it can easily be used in the dark.

Quick Select: The front panel and main remote both have four Quick Select buttons. Each button can be programmed with a specific input source, surround mode, and volume setting for easy recall.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Denon AVR-1513 is a great introductory AV receiver. It comes at a fair price and offers all of the needed features (like HDMI pass-through). The customization features are nice and the look of the physical "box" is nice. The only real drawback to the Denon is its lack of Wi-Fi and the lack of an available Wi-Fi adapter, although at this price it isn't much to complain about.
      Pros:
      Great Value
      Cons:
      No Wi-Fi or dongle availible

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far so good. I did have to contact Crutchfield on how to use it for my particular set up. I use Bose 2.1 Cinemates with my tv and it did require a pass through feature to be activated. Earlier reviews says it runs hot...I disagree. I have left it on for 12 hours plus and it is cool to the touch. The HDMI switching capabilities work great and do not interfere with picture or sound quality. For a basic receiver, it has plenty of features to keep most satisfied. As an added bonus, it looks higher end in real life. My last receiver lasted 13 years. I hope I can get at least half of that with this one.
      Pros:
Even a better deal if you find it on sale.
      Cons:
      None so far.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Everything about this order came off without a hitch. It arrived safely, well packed, and on the date I was expecting it. The Denon AVR-1513 is exactly what I needed and expected; the size, power and sound quality are perfect for my needs. Crutchfield's service is indeed outstanding, and I am very comfortable knowing their tech support will always be available if needed.
      Cons:
      I hate those peanuts!!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great Receiver, unbeatable price! I like the independent channels and low distortion rating. There are others that have more power in this price range, but take it from a recent music graduate; quality trumps power! The on-screen configuration menu is great. I thought I would hardly use the front HDMI, but have used it often with the laptop/camera to stream youtube/home videos/pandora/etc. It is obviously not the top-of-the-line receiver, but it does everything I need and more for movies and music.
      Pros:
Bargain! The CD Manual and on-screen menu made set-up easy. Great sound/enough power. Selectable pass-through (only one input). Almost no heat while running (even after HOURS of use)
      Cons:
      Nothing yet.

      surpisingly good little amp

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this for my upstairs living room tv. I wasnt lookng for anything great, just something to have my TV and cable box interfaced with, hooked to a Klipsch 5.1 speaker system. The amp got here in just a couple days after ordering it and arrived in perfect condition. Once I got it unboxed, hooking it up was simple and logical. The amp provided enough power to make viewing very enjoyable. I used to spend all my TV watching time in my family room but have found that since I received this receiver, I have been spending increasing amounts of time watching TV in the living room. It was a great purchase
      Pros:
Dimensions of the unit, ease of setup, power of the amp
      Cons:
      cut corners in quality

      Denon AV-1513

Written By jpen, Westchester,New York on Wednesday, December 26, 2012

I purchased the Denon due to the HDMI switching of sources to the Television. It worked well for a few days then it started to not by pass the cable signal properly when the Denon is off. Also when using the Denon to power up the source the picture starts to pulsate. Had to hook it up with all sources going directly to the TV and using the digital out from the TV the Denon for 5.1 audio. Not happy with this way of hooking up my system.
      Pros:
      Easy set up. Sounds good
      Cons:
      see above review

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We are just starting to use this Denon A/V receiver as a component in our home theater system. It is working with a 60" Visio LED tv, LG BluRay player, XBox gaming console, and Polk Audio RM 5300 5.1 surround sound speakers with powered subwoofer. The overall performance is great, and I think the Denon receiver is the heart of the system. I was very pleased with Crutchfield's easy to use online chat with a tech advisor. Tommy gave me good, solid advise on my comparison of 2 A/V receivers. That advise, combined with time efficient service made buying from Crutchfield a pleasure...again. I purchased our Polk Audio speakers from Crutchfield some years ago. Their Crutchfield Cable Labels are a "Must Have" tool also.
      Pros:
Great performance through this receiver. It has alot of capabilities...for a great price. Very nice, clean looks. Easy to use remote control. Crutchfield's expertise and service helped me buy with confidence.
      Cons:
The Denon "Getting Started" booklet was easy to follow. The owner's manual is on an included CD-ROM. That's cool, but I miss having a printed version in front of me as I am trying to make adjustments with the receiver. And there are many "tweeks" a person can make. I admit that it's "old school' of me. I also wish that at least some of the remote control buttons were back lit for viewing in low light.

      Great low end receiver

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First I have to compliment JR the sales rep first contacted by me with a question on Denon AVR 1613 with Airplay. I was sure how Airplay worked so I called Crutchfield and was fortunate to get JR on the phone who was very good in explaining Airplay. Since I did not have the capability of hooking up my receiver to my router JR suggested a lower cost alternative the AVR 1513 for less money and basically the same receiver. I later learned it is not the same, less HDMI connections on the rear, 3 not 4, and no microphone to set up speakers. Basically the same but $70 less. Shipping was quick and well packaged but I had to download and print the instruction manual which was not a problem. Following the manuel was the problem to do the set up. Manual lacked explanation for us not so smart on audio what "crossover' meant etc. So I called JR and got connected to Crutchfiels's tech service who walked me through the set up and made good suggestions how to set up the speakers and other settings that were not really explained in the manual. So now I have been connected for a few weeks and love the receiver. This receiver replaced a mid range Onkyo receiver with no HDMI connections but with much better speaker connections.. With the low end receivers you get the spring loaded connections rather than the screw down type. I now run my Apple TV, Sony Blue Ray and Comcast cable box to my 3 rear HDMI's. I would like one more rear HDMI for my Roku.
      Pros:
Great simple easy to read remote and $200 price from Crutchfield and great customer service (3 calls already) Can't get that from Amazon!!! Same price....
      Cons:
Spring loaded speaker connectors located on the right rear (wish I had noticed this on the diagram since my speaker wires come into the cabinet on the left side) It worked but due to short length had difficulty hooking them up. Would move up to mid range receiver next time.......

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I won't go into details on what digital audio formats this is capable of, most receivers you buy these days already have HDMI connections, 5.1 dolby digital surround, DTS, etc...it has all that except for 7.1. It's only 75 watts per channel and if you need 7-8 speakers connected, keep looking, but for a mid-range receiver, this one is perfect for my home theater system. In my opinion if you're pushing more wattage than this one can handle, it's overkill. It was easy to hook up and man it sounds awesome! My home theater has never been better. For the low price I paid and free shipping as well, I am very happy with this product!
      Pros:
low price, easy to hook up straight out of the box, perfect for a mid-range home theater system...sounds fansastic!!

      none so far

A nice little home theater receiver

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Denon AVR-1513 does the job it's intended to do very well. It has plenty of power, and much to my delight, runs cool. I didn't see mention beforehand, but it does have a tuner in it. The full manual comes in CD-R form, which is annoying, especially as the set-up is somewhat complicated and confusing, and I ended up having to print a lot of pages. I could not get the Denon to recognize a DTS signal coming from my Sony Blu-ray dvd player. The Crutchfield advisor did not know why, but when I called Denon, the gal knew what my question was before I was half through the first sentence, which means the problem is common. Solution: make sure the dvd player is sending a bitstream or HDMI raw signal, not a pre-processed signal, to the Denon. Obviously, this should be addressed in the short "quick" setup guide. At any rate, it's a very competent machine, at a very reasonable price.
      Pros:
Great performance, plenty of power, and runs cool [which means efficient].
      Cons:
Should come with a paper user's manual. Display is way too dim, even on "bright".

      Great 2-channel Sound

Written By Maynard, West Bloomfield on Sunday, November 25, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a receiver with HDMI inputs and wanted to get the best 2-channel audio in my $200 - $500 budget. I did a lot of online research and was able to learn everything about home theater features but very little about music playback audio performance in this low range. A quick call to Crutchfield allowed me to choose the AVR-1513 and it has the best sound I've had in my home. I have it hooked up to an old pair of bookshelf Cerwin-Vegas and the imaging, clarity, and even bass response (no subwoofer) are impressive. It has a lot of tweaking options. If you're looking for a very basic-featured amp with quality sound, you will be happy with this little bargain.
      Pros:
Low price, great 2-channel music quality without paying for features I don't need.
      Cons:
None for my needs, but you may wish you had Audyssey speaker calibration, component inputs, network/Airplay and/or ipod connectivity.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very easy to set up. Nice looking unit. Works really well. One note - it's all black on the front, with no little indicator lights. My living room doesn't have any light going onto the unit, so finding which buttons to hit is a "feel" thing. Small nit, but hey.
      Pros:
Out of box set up. Simple. Good power / sound / picture.
      Cons:
      None to speak of.

      Good receiver

Written By JimN, Dallas, TX on Thursday, November 08, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good receiver, basic functionality, easy to set up and get running quickly. I wanted a good basic receiver to replace one that died after 9 years and didn't want to have a lot of bells and whistles, just a simple 5.1 quality receiver and this Denon did the job. The only real reason I don't give this a 5 star rating is because it does have some quality items that don't really impress me much.
      Pros:
Quick and easy setup. Generally good quality receiver. Simple remote.
      Cons:
Volume control needs to be at 60-65 for my particular setup (out of 100) which seems to be a bit odd. Would prefer it to be much lower than that.

Easy setup and operation. Great sound. Much clearer than the Onkyo it replaced. i have had two other Denons in the past and never had a problem with them. The Onkyo was giving me problems after only two years. I plan to replace one of the outdated Denons (only one HDMI) with the AVR-1913.
      Pros:
Easy setup Great sound Reasonable price History of being reliable
