Floor-standing speakers — still standing tall

Sure, floor-standing tower speakers buck the industry trend toward smaller, visually inconspicuous speakers, but they're hard to beat if great sound is your primary goal. Tower speakers produce powerful sound with excellent bass, making them a great choice for serious music lovers and for folks who want high-impact home theater.

Our take on the Klipsch Reference RF-82 II

by Kristen Schaub

Stand-out audio performance from a solid floor-standing speaker

Looking for speakers that will take your movies and music to the next level? The Klipsch® RF-82 II offers up sparkling highs, rich, dynamic mids, and full-bodied bass for larger home entertainment spaces. Building on Klipsch's previous Reference speaker line, the Series II models have updated drivers and a new crossover system for even more spacious sound. Grab a pair of these well-made towers for your main left and right home theater speakers, or use them on their own for a rockin' stereo music setup.

Grille off

Horn technology for "front row" sound

All Reference Series II speakers feature a redesigned version of Klipsch's famous horn-loaded tweeter. Because high-frequency sounds are more directional than bass frequencies, it's especially important to target them right toward your ears. Klipsch places their titanium tweeter inside a flared opening, known as a "horn," which disperses the highs evenly across your listening area in a 90°-wide, 60°-high pattern. With their Series II speakers, Klipsch has redesigned the shape and slope of their famous horn enclosure, so your movie soundtracks and music will sound more "open," with improved dynamics and efficiency. All in all, you can count on powerful, "front row" sound that's crystal-clear at all volume levels.

Cabinet construction

High-tech driver design

The RF-82 II uses newly machined, light-yet-rigid Cerametallic woofers with a folded edge to produce smoother mids and tighter bass. The specially treated aluminum in the cones helps to dampen unwanted vibrations and reduce distortion, while integrated dustcaps add stability. The RF-82 II also has dual five-way binding posts, giving you the option to bi-amp or bi-wire this speaker for even better performance. And the rigid, braced cabinet comes in a handsome woodgrain vinyl finish.

Check out the rest of our Klipsch lineup, and build a complete Reference Series II home theater or stereo speaker system. And don't forget to add a Klipsch subwoofer for high-impact bass.

    Driver Technology

Highly-Efficient Design: The Klipsch RF-82 II utilizes a highly efficient design to produce more output using less power & energy for louder sound with less distortion. The RF-82 II is able to fill large rooms with outstanding, accurate, non-fatiguing sound that you can listen to for hours.

Tractrix Horn Tweeter: The Klipsch RF-82 II features a professional-grade 1.0-inch titanium-diaphragm compression driver inside a square Tractrix Horn for smoother high-end response with greater extension, enhanced imaging, and more powerful dynamics. The Tractrix Horn delivers a 90-degree wide by 60-degree high dispersion pattern for a broader sound-stage. Behind the horn lies a 1.0-inch titanium tweeter with a linear travel suspension for open, natural, sound.

Dual Woofers: The dual 8.0-inch woofers of the RF-82 II feature Klipsch's distinctive, copper-colored Cerametallic cones. Made with an anodized aluminum, these cones are strong and dent resistant. The anodizing process converts their inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range. The 8.0-inch woofers also employ a rubber surround for added durability.

Crossover Network: For signal purity and perfect driver integration, the crossover on the RF-82 II features the finest components and Klipsch custom internal wiring.

    Enclosure Design

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The dual 8.0-inch Cerametallic cone woofers and 1.0" titanium diaphragm compression driver are mounted in a Bass reflex enclosure which features dual rear-firing ports. The RF-82 II's rigid cabinet offers improved internal cross-bracing to minimize panel vibrations that can color sound and dual rear-firing ports to eliminate turbulence noise. A black metallic finished baffle around the horn mouth and dual woofers dramatically improve acoustics across the sonic range. The bass reflex enclosure features a MDF cabinet finished with either a Black Ash or Cherry wood-grain vinyl.

Magnetic Grille: The floor-standing loudspeaker features a removable magnetic grille which easily snaps into place over its cast-aluminum front baffle. The speaker can be used with or without its grille in place.

    Connections

Dual Binding Posts: The speaker has two sets of binding posts connected by jumpers. Using the dual binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and bare wire.

    Mounting Options

Feet: The RF-82 II feature two integrated front-feet and two stabilizer rear-feet with rubber bottoms so you can safely place the speaker on your tile or hardwood floors. The Reference RF-82 II also comes supplied with a set of carpet spikes so you can place the speaker comfortably on your carpet. The supplied carpet spikes add approximately 1.0-inch to the height of the speaker. The carpet spikes screw in directly to the bottom of the floor-standing speaker's feet.

Placement: The Reference Series floor-standing loudspeaker is designed to perform well in a wide variety of locations but you will get the most out of the speaker by following these simple guidelines.

    • The speaker requires a few inches of clearance behind it to allow its port to breathe and will sound best when they are at least two feet from any nearby walls.
    • A pair of RF-82 II loudspeakers should be equal distance from the wall behind them. It also helps to have the left and right speakers at different distances from their nearest side walls. This sort of staggering helps smooth the bass range.

    Klipsch RF-82 II

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are the greatest floor standers that I have ever had the pleasure to own. I was a little hesitant at first based on the price but if I had to do it again I would for sure splurge and buy these wonderful speakers again. I am coming from Infinity Primus P362's as my mains and I can certainly tell you that these RF-82 II's are leaps and bounds better. Much better highs which are more crisp and clear and the low end is great as well. Bass response on these are very good and they produce a nice tight bass response. They can go pretty low but if you are a home movie buff or looking for more bang then a sub-woofer is for sure recommended but not needed. These as a stereo pair sound great. I am using a Pioneer Elite SC-37 receiver and these speakers can be pushed hard with no signs of distortion what so ever even at high volumes thanks to their very efficient design. Just finished rewatching Star Wars eps 3-6 and these speakers made the movie come alive like I never heard before. Stellar. One last note: these are not as directional as some reviewers have stated.
    Pros:
Provides an excellent front sound stage from crisp clean high's thanks to its horn loaded tweeter. Bass response is excellent provided you have the right amp/power going to these speakers. Ability to bi-amp these speakers is an excellent option to have.
    Cons:
Not really a con but at this price point I would like to have a real wood veneer...that being said the vinyl wood grain is very well done and does not look cheap and does in fact look like real wood. I went with the black ash. As others have noted on the 5-way binding posts, they feel a little cheap to me but get the job done. Would have preferred them to be metal instead of the plastic thumb screws. These are heavy speakers as others have noted and quite large as well so measure your room!

    Great speakers

I have my RF-82ii's hooked up as stereo speakers as opposed to surround. I just love the BIG clear sound that they reproduce. I've owned alot of different speakers in my 50 years on the planet, and these are the best I've ever owned.
    Pros:
Nice, clear bass that fills the room, very clear mids and highs.
    Cons:
They're a bit on the large side, but I like that, so no real cons.

Awesome speakers, completely challenge my long held beliefs concerning speakers, cannot believe that two eight inch speakers are capable of such clean and extended bass, the highs and midrange are equally impressive, the high efficiency is the icing on the cake.
    Pros:
Can't fault construction quality on any level, equal to high quality American made products.
    Cons:
Wish the finish were real wood but for the price it's to be expected.

    Excellent Speakers!!

Written By Shawn C, Arizona on Sunday, March 24, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow! I've had these speakers for a couple weeks now and continue to be impressed. It took a little time to re-adjust my Onkyo 809 the way I like music to sound and a little time for my ears to get used these speakers, but it was well worth it! I hear things in music now that I was missing before! I have purchased a whole reference series for my main listening area and man do they sound great together! These towers can handle power very well. I cannot get them to distort, no matter how loud I turn it up! I love my bass and for people who need to feel their music I suggest adding a sub to the mix, the speakers bass is good alone, but it will not "hit" you without a sub. For the money, these speakers are an exceptional value!! I would buy them again without hesitation!
    Pros:
Great clarity, excellent highs, awesome presense
    Cons:
a little light on the bass for anyone who needs to be "moved" - That's why we buy subs!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have listened to several speakers better than the Klispsch RF 82. They were $6000.00 and higher. The Klipspsch are very directional, be aware of that. The overal performance is very good. I do not believe you can buy any speaker better in this price range. If you buy these you will NOT be disappointed. My statement: Klipsch delivers again! Do not hasitate...
    Pros:
    Unbelivable for the price

    AWESOME speakers!

Written By Richard U., McAllen, Tx. on Thursday, March 14, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have always admired and wanted Klipsch speakers. In the early 1980's, I had a friend that owned a pair of Klipschorn's, and they sounded amazing. There are truly no words that can properly convey just how AWESOME these speakers are. I have a pair of RF 7 II's standing side-by-side of the RF 82 II's and my center speaker is the Klipsch RC 64 II, with the RS 62 II's surround speakers that I mounted on the wall above my couch, and the SW 311 subwoofer, all which I ordered from Crutchfield, The pro's at Crutchfield promptly answered all my questions, so I decided to pull the trigger and let the moths out of my wallet. You only live once, so if you want the best in sound, order your Klipsch speakers, THE KEEPERS OF THE SOUND from Crutchfield. When I ordered them, I couldn't wait to get them. The sound that they produce is PURE AUDIO ECSTACY. POWER. DETAIL. EMOTION. is exactly what you will get when you order your Klipsch speakers. If you want the best, you have got to pay for it.
    Pros:
The sound these speakers reproduce is exactly what sound engineers expect.
    Cons:
To me, there are no cons about the RF 82 II's. I have always believed that you get what you pay for. I give these speakers a 5 star rating.

    Killer Klipsch Speakers

Written By RadioDan, Independence Or on Sunday, November 04, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I was a kid I used to dream about the ideal stereo system.. Of course, like any dream, it included Klipsch Corner Horn speakers.. Now that I have the available resources to make my dreams happen I found a vintage Empire Troubadore turntable, (had an amp already) and went looking for speakers. I considered the Corner Horns, but they dont really fit the decor, so I got a set of Refernce 82s... Man, they are AWESOME !!! Of course that wasn't enough, so now I also have the rest of the refernce series 5.1 surround sound set. WOW!!!!! I am still unsure of the actual need for a subwoofer (or pair thereof) because the 82s have stunning thunderous low frequency response... as low as any of my source goes so far...
    Pros:
Not only is the sound thrilling, but the look great too!
    Cons:
    none

Movie or Music, it'll rock both

Written By Brandon, Owings Mills, MD on Wednesday, August 08, 2012

I purchased the RF-82II as my left and right reference speakers (purchased 2 towers in total), and to go along with the RC-64II center. I am pleasantly in awe of the clarity and depth these towers offer. They will play/ hit the highest of the highs and deepest lows that a movie sound track can throw at it, and will replicate and envelop you in warm melody if you're playing music through them. For the price, there is not a better tower on the market! (this is my opinion and based on how my ears hear the speakers).
    Pros:
price, clarity, style, size, warranty, power (RMS Watt) handling capability, Bi-Amp capability, weight, cabinet construction, packaging for shipping
    Cons:
if you are not accustomed to tower speakers of these dimensions, they could be heavy to you and less maneuverable around your home..... Nothing about these towers is negative

    Excellent main speaker choice

Written By thedjan, Bellingham, WA on Friday, May 04, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Little assembly required for floor stands/carpet spikes right out of the box. They are heavy and of obvous quality. You might concider a hand cart with towels for padding to locate in you room. Manufacturer recomends 2 feet behide for optimum bass response. I have 2 subs so bass response for me was not an issue. They perform well and provide excellent mid and high range main speakers for my set up. The detail I have been missing is amazing. By them selves as a stereo pair they sound ok, but I use them in concert w/ an entire Klipsch reference series speaker 9.2 setup. They are designed to work togeather and for that they are quite simply amazing.
    Pros:
    Quality, sound, apearance, bi-amp ability
    Cons:
    none so far

    LovemyKlipsch

Written By Klipsch RF-82II, Jacksonville, FL on Thursday, February 09, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My system: 5.1 using Yamaha RX-V1900 7.1 receiver, total Klipsch speaker system with RF-82II left and right, RF62II center, RF-52II rear surround. Impressive detail and imaging, soundstage just grew with introducing these exceptional speakers(last 2 speakers to replace before the system became all Klipsch). Provides all the bass needed above the sub woofer frequency. Gives alot of punch in dynamics. Pricing is very reasonable and once you hear the impact of these speakers within your sound system, you will be amazed. Very easy to drive. They work well with complimentary Klipsch speakers to complete the surround layout. Before buying these speakers, I never used the "Direct Audio" mode of my audio receiver. Now, when I want to get serious about listening to a CD, I select Direct Audio without hesitation.
    Pros:
Great eye appeal. Awesome sound. Affordably priced. Great selection for stereo or surround application.
    Cons:
I truly can't think of any.

Excellent speakers, I was reading other reviews about they said dont have enough bass and they are totally wrong, I dont know what kind of amp they were using it but I have a denon avr 2808 ci and It make them scream so good and hit hard!!! I really recomend this speakers to anyone and its worth every dollar that you pay for them.

good but not as great as the hype

Great tight tweeter but not enough bass. Not as loud as the spec' s would have you believe. needs a subwoofer to really enjoy the full sound. Not bad but not what I expected from the reviews I had read.

Is a massive upgrade from Infinity Beta 20's with 8" subwoofer . Sound quality , yes . construction quality , yes . Eye candy , yes . Made in China , yes . I really like these speakers , people looking for the total experience will want a nice subwoofer , these speakers dont go that low .
