Polk Audio

Our take on the Polk Audio UltraFocus™ 6000

by Dave Bar

Serious sound quality that fits in your pocket

With the UltraFit 6000, Polk called upon their decades of speaker engineering know-how to create headphones with a smart, ultra-portable design. High-quality components reproduce your music with impressive clarity and detail, while active noise-canceling technology isolates you from noisy surroundings. Just insert these earbuds and press "play" to turn a hectic commute into a peaceful private concert. A handy push-to-hear control mutes the audio and amplifies outside sounds so you can carry on a conversation with those around you without removing your headphones.

Engineered for durability and comfort

Along with fantastic sound, a truly great headphone lends itself to hours of comfortable listening. The UltraFocus 6000's silicone and memory foam ear tips come in a variety of sizes, so you can find an easy, secure fit. And the ultra-flexible, ribbon-style cable helps avoid tangles.

From the review Polk UltraFocus 6000 noise-canceling headphones: Going the extra mile

"The extra innovations Polk built in... made a big difference. If you like in-ear headphones, then the Polk UltraFocus 6000s would be a great choice for travel. They're very effective at reducing ambient noise, they come with enough tip choices to ensure they'll fit comfortably in almost any ear canal, and they don't compromise on sound quality."

    Features

Active Dynamic Balance Drivers: Dynamic Balance is Polk Audio's patented advanced analysis of a speaker's entire electro-acoustic and mechanical system. It helps Polk to select better materials and more efficient geometry. With deep analysis, Polk engineers can pinpoint and eliminate things that reduce performance before they become a part of the finished product. The miniature polymer drivers in UltraFocus Series headphones are specially tuned to produce a flat, uncolored frequency response. This true transparency reveals a wide dynamic range, with sharp details, and no hint of strain. The UltraFocus 6000 employs Active Dynamic Balance drivers made of lightweight, durable PET material, in a sealed micro-enclosure, tuned and fitted to eliminate resonances with optimized damping. Active Dynamic Balance technology is an exclusive combination of ANC (Active Noise Cancelling) and Polk's patented Dynamic Balance material tuning process.

Optimized Active Noise Canceling: Active Noise Canceling technology uses sophisticated audio algorithms to silence distracting outside noise. Polk goes one step further with UltraFocus headphones. They use Optimized Active Tuning to work in tandem with the ANC technology, enhancing audio performance beyond that of ordinary headphones. Whether you're traveling by airplane, train, or bus; walking along a busy street; or working out in the gym Polk's new UltraFocus Active Noise Canceling Headphones give you a refuge from all the noise. They deliver the kind of audio performance you expect from a home audio system; expansive, detailed, engrossing, with deep bass response.

Push-to-Hear Ambient Control: You can instantly mute audio and amplify outside sounds so you can experience the outside world without removing the headphones. The "Pus-to-Hear Ambient Control" is found on the headphones in-line controller.

Battery Powered: A single AAA battery (included) provides between 40-60 hours of listening time. The battery is inserted to the headphone's in-line controller.

Multiple Ear Tips: Properly fitted ear tips help you to eliminate extraneous noise, experience greater bass response, and enjoy better tonal balance. Ear tips that fit correctly also feel more comfortable. No two person's ears are exactly the same, so Polk includes three pair of Stayfit Silicone Tips (s/m/l), two pair of Stayfit 3-Flange Silicone Tips (s/l), two pair of Memory Foam Tips (s/l).

Ultra Flexible Tangle-Free Planar Audio Cable: Standard round headphone cables always coil up and twist; and are a constant source of annoyance, because they get in the way of your workout. Eventually repetitive twisting means the cable will break or pull out at the end. The cable's planar design (with oxygen-free wire for better conductivity) completely eliminates coiling, so the headphone cables won't tangle up during a workout, or when stored away. The planar design also eliminates micro-phonics, the tendency of an electronic device to turn a mechanical vibration into "noise," which you would hear, in this case, through the headphones.

StrainGuard: Headphones get a lot of abuse. The UltraFocus Headphones have been designed with this in mind. StrainGuard is a protective system that addresses the areas where many headphones fail most often. A Kevlar core that houses the speaker wire provides extra tensile strength to prevent the wire from being pulled apart at common failure points. The other points of common failure in headphones are at transitional points between cable lengths and at connection points. In the UltraFocus Series, all transitional connections are computer designed to strengthen the points where they fail most.

Connectors & Adapters: The UltraFocus Series headphones employ a gold-plated 3.5mm connector that has been designed to fit through the opening on most portable audio player cases. A 2.5mm adapter is also included for select mobile devices, such as Nokia. In addition, an airplane adaptor is included to use during your next flight.

Carrying Case: The Polk UF6000 comes with a convenient travel case for storage and transportation.

    Comfortable, heavy on the bass

Written By Rob, Greensboro, NC on Friday, December 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am a frequent traveler on flights from east coast to west coast--about 5 hours. I was in the market for noise-cancelling headphones or earbuds and after reading a few reviews of these I thought I would give them a shot. I'm not ready to spend the dough on the Bose QC headphones and don't want the extra bulk in my carry-on bag so I wanted to try another in-ear option first. I have already tried a pair of AudioTechnica buds that I bought for about $50 and returned them because they were terribly uncomfortable in my ears. I just received the Polks and have tried them around the house but not yet on the plane. First, the provide an array of different size and type of ear pieces and several of them are very comfortable and provide a good seal in the ear. Best I've had. Second, the sound quality is good, even very good, but as I read in several reviews the bass is really heavy. I have the EQ on my iPod touch set to "bass reducer" and that sounds okay but just about every other setting is way too heavy. For this reason, I may end up returning them. Finally, the noise reduction has only been tested against my bathroom exhaust fan and it definitely cancels out the sound. maybe not as well as the AudioTechnica's but average cancellation...the real test will be on my first flight to CA next week. If you don't desire a ton of bass in your music, I wouldn't recommend these.
    Pros:
    Very comfortable. Good noise cancellation.
    Cons:
    Bass is very heavy.

    Good Headphones

Written By Anonymous, Irvine, CA on Wednesday, September 26, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, I have to say these are an incredible upgrade to basic ear buds and the lower priced sets. Great sound, pretty decent noise reduction. I use them exclusively in my office, so I'm not traveling with them where noise levels can be elevated. They seem to be good for home or office environments. I wouldn't want to use them for exercising, since they are not that light weight in comparison to average ear buds. Plus these require a AAA battery to work, so there's a control device that houses the battery and on/off switch, adding extra weight. That's probably the biggest drawback and why they don't have 5 stars. The control device has an LED light to indicate when on or muted, as well as when the battery runs out. But when the light turns red or blinks red, make sure you have a back-up battery ready to go, because you have minutes before you're out of juice and no more music. Even good batteries won't last a very long time if you listen all day long, for weeks. You take that for granted when you don't use batteries to power your other headphones.

A side note: I purchased these from the outlet and when I opened the package and put them on there was an overpowering smell of cigarettes. Apparently the original person who tried them out and returned them was a heavy smoker. I left them out on my desk for a couple days to air out and eventually the scent left. Real turn-off at first. Also, the battery that came w/ them ran out after a few days of use.
    Pros:
Great sound quality over standard ear buds.
    Cons:
The constant need to have back-up batteries on hand, in case yours runs out. No battery, no music.

    Polk Audio Ultrafocus 6000

Written By Bryan, Honolulu on Saturday, August 04, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the Ultrafocus 6000 noise-canceling headphones to replace a pair of Sony in-ear NC headphones I've been using for about a year. I love Polk products, so I had high expectations. First I tried them in the kitchen just as soon as I could get them unpacked. They sounded amazing and felt great with the medium ear pieces. I was getting ready for another trip to Japan and was excited to use them on the airplane. When it was time to leave for Japan, I put them in my bag and left the Sony's behind. I put them in my ears and turned them on right after takeoff and thought I must have gotten something wrong, because the noise canceling was just average at best. I tried different ear pieces, different angles, different music, etc, but the noise-canceling never improved. When they were at their best I could still hear voices (talking, crying babies) fairly clearly over the music. I have had Bose QC-15s and three other sets, and the sound quality of these Polks was at the top, but the noise-canceling was just average. I tried them on one more trip, and ended up returning them and going back to the Sonys.
    Pros:
    Sound quality, comfort, talk-through button
    Cons:
    Average noise-canceling

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these for a long-haul flight half-way across the world....Have not gone on the trip yet but cannot wait. I have been an avid collector of all-things Polk Audio over the years, and these little guys do not disappoint. Polk is sure to offer several ear bud tips to suit your ear canal size to ensure a proper fit. You know your ear buds are fitting nice and snug, when you hear that characteristic Polk Audio bass thumping on your eardrum.

Bottom Line: If you want a discreet pair of ear-buds that offer similar features, similar/better performance than larger, bulker counterparts, all at a lower cost, then look no further. If you want to look like a pro-football star with your "ear muff" headphones, then well, these are not for you.

    Pros:
Size, portability, protective case for travel, quality
    Cons:
    None

    Solid

Written By BryceM, Atlanta, GA on Monday, June 18, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These were the first noise-cancelling headphones that I've tried. The are very solid headphones. They sould great and do a decent job of reducing background noise. My only complaints are that they are a little bulky and protrude pretty far off my ear and they don't do a great job reducing background speech or crying babies. Constant noise like jet engines, mowers, etc are nearly completely eliminated.
    Pros:
Great sound. Great at cancelling constant noise
    Cons:
Not as comfortable as other earbud styles. Not as good at cancelling non-constant noise.
