Kenwood

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Kenwood KDC-MP208

by Robert Ferency-Viars

Play your MP3 and WMA discs in the car with Kenwood's KDC-MP208 CD receiver, and watch as your song titles scroll across its display. Turn on the Supreme Setting feature — it enhances files recorded at a low bitrate to make them sound more full-bodied, and closer to the sound quality of the original source.

Connect your MP3 player to the front-panel auxiliary input. You can adjust the input level so you won't get drastic changes in volume when you switch to or from the auxiliary source. The stereo's built-in amplifier offers plenty of power, and you can shape the sound with a 3-band equalizer and six preset tone curves.

If you're adding a subwoofer, the set of preamp outputs include a low-pass filter and level adjustment for hands-on control over your bass. Kenwood also includes a handy remote control.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

      Features

Overview: The Kenwood KDC-MP208 AM/FM CD receiver features a detachable face, front auxiliary input, selectable rear/subwoofer 2-volt preamp output and MP3/WMA playback. The headunit also comes supplied with an easy to use IR wireless remote control. The unit's amplifier is rated at 22 watts x 4 channel RMS and 50 watts x 4 channel peak.

Detachable Face: The unit features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft.

Note: The unit does not come with a face case. An optional grey, soft, carrying case (142DFC2C, sold separately) is available.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KDC-MP208 can play MP3 and WMA files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. Each disc should have a maximum of 8 directory levels, 100 folders, and 255 files per folder. During MP3/WMA playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag information.

Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

AUX In: The unit is equipped with a front panel 3.5mm minijack auxiliary input that can be used to input audio from a portable audio source such as an MP3 player. The AUX input can be turned "off" in the menu if you do not want to cycle through this source if you choose not to use the AUX input.

Auxiliary Display: The KDC-MP208 allows you to select the source type displayed when using the auxiliary input. You can choose from AUX, DVD, Portable, Game, Video or TV.

Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP Off" (flat), "SP OEM" (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6x9/6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5/4" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

Note: The Speaker Setting affects the bass, midrange, and treble values of the System Q presets. The speaker setting should be selected first.

System Q Sound Control: Six EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). The 6 preset curves with their respective bass, mid, and treble levels are as follows:

      • Rock: Bass +6, Mid +1, Treble +2
      • Pops: Bass +3, Mid +2, Treble +6
      • Easy: Bass +6, Mid 0, Treble -2
      • Top 40: Bass +3, Mid +1, Treble +8
      • Jazz: Bass +5, Mid +2, Treble +2
      • Natural (Flat): Bass 0, Mid 0, Treble 0

Note: The above values reflect the System Q settings when the Speaker Setting function is turned off. When the Speaker Settings are selected, the System Q level settings are different.

Bass/Treble/Mid Control: The KDC-MP208 features independent Bass, Treble and Midrange control. You can adjust each one from -8 to +8db. The bass frequency is adjusted at 100 Hz, the treble frequency is adjusted at 10 kHz and the midrange frequency is adjusted at 1 kHz.

Bass Boost: The Kenwood CD receiver also features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels - BB1, BB2 or Off.

Fader/Balance Control: The KDC-MP208 CD receiver feature balance and fade controls from Left15 to Right15 and Rear15 to Front15. The CD receiver uses at Type 1 and Type 5 fader. When the preamp output is set to "Rear" the receiver uses a Type-5 fader that allows you to fade between the front speaker channels and the rear speaker channels along with the rear preamp output. When the preamp output is set to "Subwoofer" the receiver uses the type 1 fader which only allows fading between the front and rear speaker channels while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading .

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, FM, and AM).

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0.

Selectable Preamp Output: The KDC-MP208 features a preamp output that you can adjust from a full-range rear speaker preamp output to a low-pass subwoofer preamp output.

Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output when the output is set to Sub. You can select from 80, 120, 160 or off.

Subwoofer Level: Once you have switched the preamp output to "subwoofer" you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level from the CD receiver. You select levels between -15 to +15.

CD Playback Options: The KDC-MP208 offers the following CD playback features.

      • Pause: stops play of your disc temporarily
      • Fast Forward/Rewind: allows you to fast forward or rewind within a track of a disc
      • Track/File Search: allows you to skip to the previous or next track/file on the disc
      • Folder Select: selects folders on a MP3/WMA recorded disc
      • Repeat: repeats single track, file or folder on disc
      • Random: plays all the songs on the disc or all files within a folder in random order
      • Scan: plays the first part of each song or file on the disc you are listening to

Text/Title Scroll: The KDC-MP208 will display CD text or Audio file text. You can turn the scrolling feature "on" to scroll longer titles across the screen.

Last Position Memory: If the unit is shut off or switched to the tuner mode while a CD is playing, the next time CD is selected as the source, playback will resume from the point where it left off.

Off Eject: The KDC-MP208 allows you to eject your disc for 10 minutes after switching off the vehicles engine.

CD Force: When there is a problem with playing a CD with a special format, this setting plays the CD by force. Some CDs still may not play in the CD Force mode.

CR-2 Advanced Tuner: This unit uses Kenwood's CR-2 Advanced tuner for clear radio reception. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the CD receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling. The tuner features 3 FM banks (1, 2, 3) and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each AM/FM bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Clean Reception System Circuit (CRSC): This circuit controls multi-path distortion by reducing stereo separation. As stereo separation is reduced, multi-path has less effect on the radio signal, improving reception in areas with tall buildings and mountains. The CRSC circuit can be turned on or off.

Tel Mute: The KDC-MP208 features a cell-phone mute wire (brown) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face/button illumination is "keyed." In addition, while the unit is in Standby mode, you can turn the clock display on or off. When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Display Dimmer: The display has two brightness settings. You can change this setting within the menu.

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned "on" or "off" within the menu.

Security Code: You can enter a 4-digit security code which must be used when the unit is removed from the vehicle, or the constant power source is disconnected from the unit. When constant power is restored to the unit, the security code must be entered before the unit becomes operational.

Remote Control: The KDC-MP208 comes with the RC-517 IR wireless remote control with a full numeric keypad. The remote will control Audio, CD, and Tuner functions. It is powered by 2 "AA" batteries (supplied). The dimensions of the remote are: L = 5.362", W = 1.958", D = 1.125".

      Far from happy - kdc-mp208

Written By Dave, Dallas, TX on Friday, March 12, 2010

First off, the sound quality this unit gives out is very good....but I didn't find it to be very user friendly at all, and the owner's manual didn't help resolve things. I could not for the life of me figure out how to get the clock to be displayed during use. I did set the time, but then it's like *POOF*, it went away! Either the user's manual is written incorrectly, or maybe the unit was defective. Either way, setting the clock and it's display should be something that anyone with a 5th grade education should be able to figure out on their own. Also, the freaking knob is waaay too sensitive. Don't accidentally hit it or it puts you in sound adjustment mode, then you have to press it like a million times to get back to the tuner/CD player/or MP3 function. Lastly, the controls at the far right for selecting am/fm1,2 &3, scrolling radio station frequencies, etc. is so hard to control with consistency. Sometimes you'll press the "up" direction, and not the same command occurs. Weird. I ended up selling it for about 15% of what I originally paid for it, along with harness and remote. Buyer beware...

      Good bang for the buck!

Written By Matty, Long Island, NY on Sunday, February 08, 2009

This is a really nice stereo, it makes the car sound like I replaced everything including the speakers even though its only the head unit that I changed. Awesome versatility with mp3 cd's, aux in jack, and really nice radio reception. Aux in is key of you have satellite radio and dont feel like paying to get it professionally installed in your car. I don't think any other stereo offers a remote in this price range and the red and blue look crisp at night. I only gave four stars because I've had the stereo for months now and I still can't figure out how to set the clock time and yes I've read the manual. Everything else is pretty straightforward.

This is the second car stereo I have purchased from Crutchfield. And again it was a breeze to install. The instructions and illustrations make the installation pain and worry free. The stereo itself is easy to operate. The display is easy on the eyes at night and bright enough during the day. The remote makes raising the volume a little easier than reaching for the volume knob. The auxiliary jack located on the front of the unit allows for the use of a mp3or similar item. Couldn't beat the price.

This stereo was everything I was expecting. I can either hook up my Zune to the auxillary jack on the face or load up a flash drive and insert it into the usb port, I get all the music I want or need. Sometimes I will even put a cd in and listen. Does anyone really use cd's anymore? How weird does that sound? I have never had anything but great things to say about Kenwood products

      Kenwood Rocks!

Written By John, Lexington,SC on Tuesday, January 27, 2009

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This new super 'K' was purchased in the Crutchfield 'package' deal with the free speakers . Although I'm planning on putting the speakers in later when it warms up a little , right now this unit is pushing sound through the Factory speakers . Believe it or not , the factory speakers never sounded as clean and clear as they do with this Kenwood unit. I can't wait until I get the time to do the speaker upgrade !

Installation was about as easy as it could possibly be imagined . No hang-ups , and immediate sound ! I truly enjoy the remote more than anything else....I always figured a remote was about the most lazy and wasteful thing on Earth for a car...but that was before ! Man , I wish I had one of these a long time ago.....I don't have to take my eyes off the road to do my morning 'flip' through my favorite preprogrammed channels or reach over to adjust the volume knob . The optional input connection allows me to upgrade and play my other devices through this system and this allows me to use stuff I already have without buying something twice. The deck is pretty much user friendly , so functions and button choices are straightforward...no need to sign up for post-graduate school to learn how to operate...very easy.
The lighting options can be set for auto-dim , a big plus , but the colors ( bright white-ish blue and screaming bright red) could have been a bit more subdued...I don't want to light up the interior of my car at night by the stereo .

I got this as a special with speakers. It was a great deal. It works well and installation was reasonably simple. I am very satisfied with the unit. My only issue is that the volume nob is a bit small for my size large fingers. But for the price I can't complain.

I purchased this unit combined with the KFC-1660S speakers for my son's Ford Tempo to replace the stock radio. Essentially, we were just trying to get something to play through the speakers other than static ... but we got a lot more. MP3 and aux input provide great sources of music, the only thing that would have been better would be iPod controls --- but hey, look at the price. I would definitely buy this again.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For an entry level deck, this is good! I gave this as a Christmas gift & it is a great step up from stock without the exorbitant cost.

It has a nice eq set-up to customize the unit to your ears, an aux outlet for those of you who want to get into the MP3/iPod in-car craze without spending huge $'s. It sounds pretty darn good too.

I'm really amazed by Crutchfield's ability to match dash trim with the vehicle. It looks like this was purchased with the vehicle!!! Fit and finish are perfect!

Crutchfield does it's homework with it's product lines, I will continue to buy Crutchfield for all of my audio needs!

      Best Stereo Ever

Written By DJ, Winchester, VA on Sunday, January 25, 2009
Installed in a 1999 Honda Civic
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the best car stereo we ever had. I got it for my wife for christmas since she hadn't had a car stereo in 3 years after the factory installed one in our 99 Honda Civic was stolen. Great price, easy install, fantastic instructions.

Of course right after we got this stereo installed, the Civic died, so we bought a 2004 Kia Sedona, I'm in the process of moving this stereo to that car because we love it so much. The MP3 support and AUX port for our iPods is totally worth re-installation.

The sound is crisp and the options to change the EQ to different settings works great, even with the factory installed speakers, honestly, I think it made the speakers sound better. If this stereo can fit in your car, BUY IT!!!

      Kenwood KDC-MP208

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this unit with the free speaker promotion as a Christmas gift for a co-worker. I did the installation myself in a '96 Subaru Legacy. The factory head unit was still working, but the factory speakers were nuked. The Kenwood KDC-MP208 represents a tremendous value, and my friend is very pleased with the operation, sound, and fresh look it added to his aging Subaru. He said "driving has become fun again." I'm planning on putting one of these in an older Camry later this month. I'll let you know how that one goes. You can always rely on the fantastic support you get from Crutchfield, and the broad spectrum of products offered by them. I have been since the 70s.

      Good for the Money

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this stereo for our son's car. He has been using it for about 2
months now with no complaints. We have not installed the speakers yet.
Waiting on warmer weather to tackle that project. The installation guide
from Crutchfield was a huge help. The stereo fits into the dash like it was
there from the factory. I was very impressed. The toughest part of the
stereo installation is installing the wire connectors on the harnesses. It
would be a big help to have this step more clearly defined at the time of
purchase. Other than that, Crutchfield deserves a big thumps up!

      Kenwood KDC-MP208

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I looked at various "big box" retailers for a deck and speakers to replace the factory equipment in my Senta, only to find prices and installation were more money than I wanted to part with. I decided to check crutchfield.com, and in 20 minutes all my questions were answered and the KDC-MP208 was on the way. Installation could not have been easier, and the unit sounds great. Controls are easy to maneuver, and aesthetically it looks fantastic. It is a basic unit with not a lot of extra features, but if great sound is what you are looking for, at an attractive price point, you cannot go wrong.

I got this for my son for Christmas. It was a breeze to install with the Crutchfield kits that were included. I would recommend this stereo for anyone. I won't buy another car stereo system from anyone else..ever.

This receiver is the second Kenwood stereo I have bought from Crutchfield. This one is just as good as the first. No complaints, it works just the way I need it too. The Ipod (or MP3) adapter works very well.

I think this is a great buy for the money but I'm not a car audio person so I'm no expert. I upgraded a 1998 Escort from the factory AM/FM radio (I didn't even have a tape deck) to this, so obviously it was a huge improvement. The faceplate looks nice and is easy to use, the sound is very clear, the aux input works great, and having a remote is kind of neat. Does the job for me.

I couldnt be happier with this deck, when i bought my car it already had a aftermarket stereo. Dual XD7500(dont get it) but this Kenwood is a HUGE improvment. The sound has much improved, it much more clear and crisp. I cant wait to hear it when i install the speakers. Two thumbs way up!! Thanks Crutchfield!!

Bright display, easy to read no matter what time of day
Controls are laid out well, menus fairly easy to navigate and understand
Had no problems reading my mp3s off CD, reads them quickly with no lag

Overall a real nice unit and as this price point I only have one complaint

You can not have this display the track name and the clock simultaneously. Its either one or the other and its not just a simple button click to switch.....you have to hold a button down then side scroll to an option then click another button. Not very intuitive or user friendly.

I would probably have spent the extra $30 to get the next nicer deck just to alleviate this problem.
