Dual

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Dual XHD6425

by Ken Nail

Dual's XHD6425 CD receiver provides an amazing variety of listening choices. For starters, a built-in HD Radio tuner lets you enjoy the improved AM/FM sound quality and increased programming choices offered by free HD Radio broadcasts.

Playback options
This versatile receiver also makes it easy to play your entire music collection. You'll find a convenient front-panel USB input, perfect for connecting thumb drives or many portable music players. The CD drive plays your favorite MP3 or WMA files, so you can load a disc with multiple albums or playlists and hit the road. A front-panel auxiliary input bats cleanup, providing a convenient place to plug in your portable player or a Dock & Play satellite radio.

Power and tone
Versatility doesn't count for much if the music doesn't sound good. No problems here — the built-in amplifier boasts plenty of power, and five selectable EQ curves alter the sound with the touch of a button. The two sets of preamp outputs allow plenty of options if you're considering adding an amp or powered subwoofer.

Optional Bluetooth
Have a Bluetooth phone? Add the optional Bluetooth module and you'll be able to answer and place calls using the receiver's front panel controls.

      Display Features

Detachable Faceplate: The headunit features a detachable faceplate and comes supplied with a hard plastic carrying case.

Display Priority: You can set the unit to a source display or clock display priority. When set to source display priority, the radio tuner frequency, CD track/elapsed time, selected MP3/WMA information (track name, directory name, title, artist, or album), or Aux display will be displayed. The display priority is easily changed with the Display button.

Clock Display: Normally, the clock display illuminates only when the unit is on. You can program it so the clock is displayed when the ignition key is turned on and the unit is off.

      Audio Section

CEA-2006 Compliant Amplifier: The Dual XHD6425 features a CEA-2006 Compliant rated amplifier that offers 17 watts RMS x 4 channels in 4 ohms at 1% THD+N with a Signal-To-Noise Ratio of 80dBA. The headunit also features two sets of 2-volt preamp outputs for connecting an external amplifier.

Preset EQ Curves: You can choose from five preset curves: Pop, Jazz, Classic, Beat, and Rock. Any adjustment to the bass or treble settings automatically cancels the current EQ curve.

Bass And Treble: The headunit's Bass and Treble can be independently adjusted from -6 to +6 dB.

Loudness Curve: You can activate this feature to enhance the bass and treble frequencies when listening to music at low volumes.

Source Audio Memory: Individual bass and treble settings are retained in memory for AM, FM, CD, USB, and AUX modes. This allows you to save the Bass and Treble settings separately for each mode.

Turn-on Volume: You can preset the unit's volume when it is powered on. Each time the unit is turned on, the volume is reset to the preset level regardless of the volume level when the unit was last turned off.

Beep Confirmation: You can enable or disable beep confirmation for the headunit's control buttons.

      HD Radio Tuner

Built-In HD Tuner: In addition to the unit's standard analog AM/FM tuner, the headunit features a built-in HD AM/FM tuner. With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. HD radio delivers near CD quality sound to FM broadcasts, and FM sound to AM broadcasts. You can store up to 18 FM stations and 12 AM stations, including HD Radio stations. This headunit also supports HD Radio multicasting and allows multicast HD Radio stations to be stored as presets.

Note: Your local stations must be broadcasting HD AM/FM broadcasts to receive HD Radio content. No subscriptions fee needed for HD Radio programming.

HD Seek Mode: In addition to searching through both analog and digital stations, you can search only HD stations by using the headunit's HD Seek Mode. During this mode the headunit will skip over all analog stations and tune to only HD Radio stations.

Automatic Presets: The headunit can automatically store the six strongest stations in the current band selected. Multicast channels are not stored during Auto Preset and must be manually preset.

      CD Playback

SRAM Buffer: An internal SRAM buffer provides ESP (Electronic Skip Protection) to virtually eliminate skipping of your MP3/WMA CD-R/RW discs and allows alphanumeric or direct track search even while a song is currently playing.

DSP Processor: The headunit's powerful on-board DSP processor decodes MP3/WMA compressed audio files while maintaining near-CD sound quality.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3 and WMA files that have been recorded with constant bit rate (MP3: 8-320 kbps/WMA: 32-192 kbps) or variable bit rate compression on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded using ISO 9660 level 1 or level 2, Yellow Book MODE 1, or Yellow Book MODE 2 FORM 1. In addition, this unit is compatible with ID3 Tag version 1.x. Discs should be recorded with a maximum of 256 folders and files and 8 folder levels.

MP3/WMA Search Modes: The preset buttons and other buttons on the front panel can be used for entering letters or numbers to assist you in locating specific MP3 or WMA files and folders. The following search functions can be performed by this unit:

      • Direct File Select: search for specific file number
      • Alphanumeric File/Folder Search: search for file or folder names by entering alphanumeric characters
      • File/Folder Navigate: search for all available files within a folder

      External Device Connection

Auxiliary Input: There is a front-mounted 3.5mm auxiliary input on the headunit for connecting an external portable audio device such as a portable MP3 player. If you aren't using the aux input, it can be turned off in the menu so when you toggle through the sources aux doesn't appear.

USB Port: The XHD6425 features a front-panel USB port for connecting an external USB mass storage device. The headunit's USB port allows you to play MP3 (32-320kbps constant or variable bit rates) and WMA (32-192kbps constant or variable bit rates) files from most mass storage USB devices. The XHD6425 has a playback capacity of 48,896 MP3/WMA with 127 maximum number of folders, 382 maximum number of files in each folder and 8 maximum number of folder levels. In addition, the USB input also supports ID3 tags, version 1.x. The XHD6425 will display either elapsed time (default), track number, clock, track name, directory name, title, artist or album when connecting and playing a USB external source. Your connected portable USB mass storage device will also charge through this headunit's USB port. The headunit does not need to be in the USB mode in order to charge your connected device through the USB port. The USB port is found on the front panel of the headunit behind a protective cover. The XHD6425 offers the following playback and search options through it's USB connection.

      • Direct File Select: you can use the rotary encoder or the number buttons on the front of the headunit or on the supplied remote control to access MP3/WMA music files directly
      • File Navigation: you can use the rotary encoder to search through and select a desired track
      • Folder Access: you can use the next/previous buttons to search through and select a desired folder
      • File Repeat: repeats a selected MP3/WMA music file
      • Folder Repeat: repeats all MP3/WMA music files in the current folder
      • Random: plays all MP3/WMA music files in random order
      • Folder Random: plays all MP3/WMA music files in the current folder in random order
      • Intro: plays first 10 seconds of each MP3/WMA music file on your USB device
      • Folder Intro: plays the first 10 seconds of each MP3/WMA music file in the current folder
      • Track Select: skips to beginning of the next or previous track
      • Fast Forward/Reverse: fast forwards or reverses through the current track
      • Pause: temporarily stops USB playback

Note: MP3/WMA playback sequence is based on the order in which the files are copied to your USB device and begins in the root folder. Any empty folders or folders that do not include MP3/WMA files are skipped.

Bluetooth Ready: The XHD6425 supports Bluetooth wireless hands-free calling (HFP), advanced wireless audio distribution (A2DP), and wireless audio/video remote control (AVRCP) when connected to the optional DUAL BTM60 Bluetooth module (070BTM60, sold separately) and used with your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone or MP3 player. The optional BTM60 adapter connects to the 8-pin plug on the rear of the headunit. The unit can communicate with up to 8 Bluetooth devices.

      • Hands-Free Calling (HFP): When connected to the optional BTM60 adapter and used with your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, you can make, receive or end  phone calls from the XHD6425. You can dial out using the unit's front panel numbered buttons or from a listing of the last five phone calls from received, dialed or missed call categories that are displayed on the unit's front display panel. Incoming phone numbers will scroll across the unit's display so you know who is calling and an audible ring tone will be heard through your vehicle's speakers. The BTM60's built-in microphone and transfer of incoming audio through your vehicle's speakers allow you to carry on a mobile conversation without picking up your cell-phone.
      • Advanced Audio Distribution (A2DP): The XHD6425 also supports A2DP wireless streaming music audio from your Bluetooth enabled device when connected to the optional BTM60 allowing you to listen to audio wireless from your Bluetooth compatible mobile phone or portable MP3 player. High quality at low cost

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this radio for my son's 1997 Toyota Camry. It gave "new life" to my son's car and to its speakers. My son loves the flexibility that it offers through it USB and 3.5 mini din.
      Pros:
The radio has worked perfectly for over two years, the sound is great, even with old factory speakers, has "extended" connection, such as USB and 3.5 aux din, has HD built-in, etc. Bluetooth available through Crutchfield (even after being discontinued!)
      Cons:
None that I can think of.

For the price and function what a deal. Bluetooth works great, sound quality through factory speakers better than factory unit. Plenty of ins and outs. Volume control a little short, hard to turn for bigger fingers, HD Radio kicks in and out from analog to digital, would not be so bad but there is a slight delay between signals sounds like a skip

I love the HD channels. I get music I never got before and the signal is pretty good around here. All I listen to is hd now,. You do need a good antenna and I was wondering if a booster would work for the really distant stations.
      Pros:
Way better radio with features my out set didn't have so I am happy.
      Cons:
HD signal has to be strong. I get good signal around here but when I travel you can't expect the best signal. Really upset that after I put it in i eanted to buy another and they had no more in stock. Discontinued them?

I am very happy with the money I had to spend that I chose this receiver. The HD radio is a great feature on such a low cost unit. Love the front AUX and USB inputs
      Pros:
Low cost and easy to use. Very nice features and functions.
      Cons:
No way to turn off HD radio. When using USB and then deciding what I want to see on the display it does not store my choice forever, have to reset everytime I start car.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the best deal for the money! Dual makes the only unit with all the features I was looking for in a head unit. I installed this in my Vintage Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Convertible. After installation, I tested all the features, but could not get the USB port to read my 1GB flash drive. I talked to some Computer friends, and found out My flash drive was USB 1.1, Not USB 2.0. I got a 8GB USB 2.0 flash drive and the Reciever worked like a charm! I am very happy with this purchase. I have been recomending Crutchfield.com to my customers at work as a great source for Quality Electronics. I would definitely buy from here again!

I've had this car reciever for a few weeks now....i havent had any problems yet. i absolutely love this thing. the buttons feel a little funny when you push them, but i can live with it. 200 watts is a huge step from my 80 watt factory stereo. it was very easy to install. Crutchfield sent everything that i needed. Very good head unit for the very low price...if you want a very nice but affordable car reciever, i definately recommend this one.

Easy installation and good sound. The only issue seems that the power coming into the radio has some noise so that you can hear a noise/ sound when you speed up or slow down. Was told to purchase another part to solve the issue, had purchased an Aiwa radio from crutchfield which did not have this issue unfortunately that one died and that is why I purchsed this model. All in all this is a good radio for the price.

Great Upgrade from previous aftermarket Radio

Installed in a 1999 Honda CRV
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 1999 Honda CR-V that came with a factory cassette deck. Several years ago I replaced the factory radio with an Pioneer CD/Radio that was better than the factory but did not support MP3 and newer formats. The Pioneer radio was having problems and I wanted to replace it. My car is old so I did not want to spend a fortune and I saw this HD radio and several friends recommended Dual saying they were underrated.

I got the radio and mounting kit and wiring harness for a great price, including shipping. My previous aftermarket radio was installed by a national electoronics store. For years my AC adapter in front never worked but I made no connection with my radio install.

First off the instructions were crystal clear. I am mechanically inclinded and this was a snap. I spent the night before soldering the wiring harness and using heat shrink tubing. I could have used wingnuts but I wanted that "clean" look. It took me an hour to install and I found out that the guy who installed my radio had unplugged the AC adapter outlet and the cigarette tray light and had NOT plugged them back in. It was tough for me because I have big hands but I did a more prefessional installation than they did. Everything on the instructions is where they said it was.

The radio is great. I am enjoying "hidden" HD channels. I listen to a lot of different music and the sound quality across the spectrum is great. Worth the price.

The features and price point of this head unit can't be beat but it had issues that I
couldn't deal with and I had to return it. First, the display is too reflective. I had problems
reading it in the daytime and this is dangerous while driving. Second, the signal to
noise ratio at 80 dBA is equivalent to "hiss" on cassette tapes. There was also an
interference issue that created an audible whine from the speakers. I'm not sure what
caused it but the factory receiver did not have this problem.

Once again, bravo to Crutchfield Team for great installation kit and phone support. The unit is great, especially for the price! It is hard to tell how great it will sound as I have not installed the speakers, amp and subs yet and am playing through standard yukky speakers.

But features are nice and Crutchfield kit and instructions top notch. I had never bought a Dual unit, but many online sites seem to give them excellent reviews and I don't think Crutchfield would be pushing them if they weren't decent units.

I bought a 6425 for my car and it was great except that no matter how many songs I put
on a USB drive, it only played about 40. I called Dual and they said to return it so they
could replace it. As it turned out there was nothing wrong with the unit. Dual tech support
had no idea how their unit worked. You had to put music files on the USB drive like data
and not with Windows Media Player. The subfiles exceeded the capacity of the unit. The
replacement they sent me has horrible HD radio reception. The local HD stations keep
cutting in and out even when the car is not moving! My wife just replaced the 6425 in her
car becasue the display went blank and the volume control went haywire. She replaced
it with a Sony and the HD reception is great. I will be making the same move soon.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Recently purchased this receiver for my 1996 Dodge Ram truck. Still had the original receiver unit installed and it was to the point of non-functional...Searched the Cruhtfield site and found this Dual XHD-6425 unit. It has the features I was most interested in ( Aux & USB) for a fair price that I was willing to pay. The installation was quite easy with the Crutchfield installation package, everthing was included for mounting (except for wire crimps). Complete installation took a few hours and looks great. The standard radio function is fine, but points to my need to also replace some speakers...The HD radio has limited use in my rural area; looking forward to a drive to an area which offers HD stations to check out this feature. The Aux jack works great with my iPod shuffle. Haven't yet used the USB connection. Overall quite satisfied so far...

great HD radio and sound, better than Sony for the price

Written By Riley, Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday, April 24, 2010

This was first installed in a Buick Regal and then changed into a Toyota Solara. I like most everything about the unit. The only cons are that sometimes I can't read the display because of the glare from the shiny display plastic or from the sun washing out the blue digital display (I think that this will happen with any unit unless it has an LCD display). Also, I think the power to the power antenna should only activate it to go up when the radio is on and not when the DVD player is on. The power antenna goes up as soon as you turn the unit on and stays up all the time until you turn it off.

I have the Bluetooth module installed and it works well. No complaints other than the price was 40% of the unit's price. I love the remote, the presets are normal, 5 for each band, 3 FM bands and 2 AM bands, power is plenty, and this unit has many features. HD radio is nice and sounds better than regular radio and gives many more channels to choose. I shopped locally and the only units with built-in HD tuners cost much more, especially Sony's, which I did not think was worth paying twice the price of this unit for.

      Good Sounds

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like the sound from this unit. Bought to replace my factory radio. The HD is nice
becasue there are hidden HD stations. It was fairly easy to install but there was some
soldering for the interface harness (GM door open alarm).
One thing I noticed is that certain stations will "skip" if you get in a weak reception area.
It reminds you of a CD skipping. I guess there must be a delay in the broadcast of HD
      stations.
The othere thing is I wish the Volume control knob stuck out farther, it's a bit low profile
and not as easy to adjust as I would like.
