What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Maximum bass output

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Alpine's Type-R subwoofers will bring big bass to just about any vehicle. The SWR-12D2 12" sub features a cone made from Kevlar® treated pulp — the same material used to make bulletproof vests — and its durable HAMR Santoprene™ surround allows for huge amounts of excursion. This sub was built for bassheads that want the best of both worlds: accurate response and otherworldly thump.

Bring on the power

The SWR-12D2 can handle an astounding 1000 watts of RMS power, so be sure to choose a suitable amplifier as these bass monsters definitely want lots of power. Its dual oversized 2-ohm voice coils offer the wiring flexibility you'll appreciate as your system changes and grows, so you can always pull maximum power from your amp. It works well in sealed and ported enclosures so you can choose what kind of bass you want to hear and feel.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible.

    Features
    Enclosure Compatibility

    Features

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine Type-R subwoofer has a two-piece structural parabolic Kevlar reinforced pulp cone. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone design. There is also an oversized inverted poly-mica dust cap, which increases rigidity and virtually eliminates cone distortion at extreme volume levels.

HAMRS: The woofer features a High Amplitude Multi Roll Surround (HAMRS), made of Santoprene, that allows a large linear excursion and greater SPL. The HAMRS design allows extreme excursions without sacrificing valuable cone area.

Progressive Spider: The progressive Conex spider has reinforced layer tinsel leads to ensure reliable and consistent control of the tinsel leads and eliminate any mechanical noise or interference often seen in high excursion cone designs.

Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry: Alpine's Patented Compound Radius Curve pole geometry ensures a symmetrical magnetic field, while optimizing flux density to reduce distortion and further improve power handling and output.

Oversized Voice Coil: The oversized (65mm), high-temperature, 4-layer dual voice coils offer increased power handling to 1000W RMS / 3000W Peak.

Dual Voice Coils: For system flexibility, the woofer has two 2-ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 1-ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents a 4-ohm load.

Spring Terminals: The spring post terminals are all located on one side of the woofer. The terminals will accept bare wire up to 8 gauge, pin connectors, or banana plugs.

Jumpers: Included with the woofer are two voice coil terminal jumpers. These jumpers allow you to easily wire the voice coils in parallel (for a 1-ohm load) or series (for a 4-ohm load).

    Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: The recommended sealed box volume ranges from 0.65 cubic feet to 1.1 cubic feet, with 0.85 cubic feet being the ideal size.

Ported Box Volume: The recommended ported box volume ranges from 1.1 cubic feet to 1.6 cubic feet. The ideal size is 1.48 cubic feet, using a slot port measuring 12-1/2" (W) x 1" (H) x 19" (L).

    Ride with this thumper!

Written By Bwendan, Lafayette, Ca on Monday, March 04, 2013

I bought this sub just under a year ago and I cannot be happier with it. I knew I wanted one for a long time but I could not decide on which one to get. I decided to get one sub with a 500W amp and I am not at all disappointed with my purchase. I use it every single time I drive somewhere. Having a sub like this made me appreciate certain kinds of music more because it adds a whole new element to the beat and song. When I crank the volume it is a massage.
    Pros:
Hits crisp high and low frequencies. Better low's than friends 2x JL W3.
    Cons:
    None

    Amazing

Written By donD, saskatchewan on Wednesday, February 27, 2013

words cant describe this sub. i had one 12 inch type S and liked it but cold weather got to it and cracked the surround so I upgraded to 1 12 type R running off a alpine mrx-m110 amp with all alpine type s 6x9s in the vehicle and with the amp only runnin half power and the deck at -7 for bass the sub still overpowers the 4 speakers. It ratteled the windshield so much the seal on it broke. The Break in period did take about 30 to 40 hours but it really hits every note clean and can hold the bass no problem. Alpine is definately in my mind and others who have heard my system the best audio company out there with reasonable prices for their products.
    Pros:
just incredible, strong bass, loud, clear, crisp, hits every frequency, awesome
    Cons:
    heavy haha, too much bass

    Type R's Go Hard

Written By Al Pine, Connecticut on Monday, October 08, 2012

I have a pair of alpine type r 12s in a ported box in the back of my 2003 mazda protege5. (hatch). hooked up 2 ohms to a 1000w alpine amp (last years model), only pushing each at half of the capable RMS, and these things quake. they have already made my rear view mirror out of a function. even side mirrors shake. At only 25/35 volume they out weigh my mids and highs by far. if youre looking for a set of QUALITY subs that are made to last and bump, go for alpine. dont go with kicker or some other crap. i out beat my buddies 3x type e's to a 4000w cheapo amp. both of us have the loudest bang around town though. these are really good buy.
    Pros:
    quality reliable tight tuned
    Cons:
i blew my type s's so i upgraded to r and have had absolutely no problems.

    Awesome

Written By Jason, Waynesboro, Va on Sunday, June 03, 2012

With a growning family I had made the choice to retire my 2 12" infiniti kappa subs and replace them with a smaller 10" sub so I could reclaim some trunk space. I am running a Profile AP2000 960 watts RMS @ 4 ohms & a Kenwood DNX 5120 head unit. I chose the Alpine SWR-10D2 as it seemed a very good choice and could handle the power my amp puts out as well as it was a smaller sub. I had that sub for almost a week it packed a really good punch but was leaving a some to be desired so I did some research and decided the 2 inches each direction of box space and an additional $50 would be well worth the investment if I could get the depth back in my music that I liked having. I do not regret the choice at all this sub hits every bass note in every song I could throw at it. Most of which it hammered great with the sub output on - 16 (Negative). I haven't had to turn the sub out on my head unit past -10 (negative) for any music type. This thing is insane!!!!
    Pros:
Ample power handling, Very responsive to all music types
    Cons:
None that have been found yet unless to loud for the nieghbors is a con
