Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Pioneer DEH-P7400HD

by Ken Nail

The MIXTRAX difference
Pioneer's DEH-P7400HD CD receiver feature MIXTRAX technology to spice up your in-car listening experience. Once you plug in your iPod®, iPhone® or USB device, you'll experience pulsing lights and DJ-like transitions from song to song — it's like having your own virtual DJ on board.

Pioneer DEH-P7400HD

In-dash Pandora® control
You can take your favorite Pandora® Internet radio stations on the road with the DEH-P7400HD. Plug in your iPhone® and you'll have control over your favorite Pandora® functions like "thumbs-up" and "thumbs-down" ratings, bookmarking, and display of track info. Speaking of display, you'll love the look of the DEH-P7400HD controls and face. The dot-matrix display presents info in big, legible letters and numbers, and you can customize the colors of the buttons and display to match your dashboard or your mood.

The HD Radio™ advantage
HD Radio offers the best in radio sound — and it's free. With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can listen to any local station broadcasting an HD Radio signal, enjoying CD-quality FM and AM that's a big cut above the scratchy static you're used to.

Sound quality above all
At the heart of this receiver, Pioneer's acclaimed built-in amp delivers plenty of power for good, clean sound, while the Easy EQ 3-band equalizer lets you tailor the sound to match your car's interior. The Advanced Sound Retriever improves the audio performance of your digital audio files, reversing the compression process to give you more high-frequency sparkle and musical detail.

Ready to play your music
The DEH-P7400HD doesn't stop there. It plays all your CDs, including those burned with MP3 and WMA files. Plug your iPod® into the rear USB input, and you can use the Pioneer's controls to run the show. Once connected, the receiver bypasses your iPod's built-in digital-to-analog converter, using its own high-quality DAC to deliver your music with the highest fidelity possible. You'll love the convenience of the auxiliary input on the front panel, great for plugging in a satellite radio, gaming device, or another audio source.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

      HD Radio

HD Radio: The Pioneer DEH-P7400HD's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-like sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. Best of all, HD Radio is 100% subscription free. The unit's tuner also supports analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to HDRadio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 3 multicast programs (HD1 to HD3, and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible analog or HD AM/FM stations.

iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from a HD Radio or RDS FM broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store.

Supertuner IIID: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

Reception Blending: If a digital broadcast reception condition gets poor, this unit automatically switches to the analog broadcast of the same frequency level. If this function is set to "On", the tuner switches between digital broadcast and analog broadcast automatically. If this function is 'Off', reception will be conducted within an analog broadcast.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest analog or HD stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

XM Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect and control Pioneer's GEX-P920XM XM tuner (130P920XM, sold separately).

Note: A subscription to XM, plus the proper antenna is required in order to receive satellite radio programming.

More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-P7400HD are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-P7400HD are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
      • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

3-Way Rotary Knob: The Pioneer DEH-P7400HD features a 3-way rotary knob combined with a 4-way lever for easy control. You can scroll through your music and audio settings with greater ease using the 3-way rotary knob and 4-way lever.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. Hear the detail, warmth, and clarity, the way the artist intended it, from all of your highly compressed MP3 and WMA files stored on your USB device, iPod/iPhone, and portable media players. By restoring data (especially higher frequencies) that tends to get lost in the digital compression process, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever technology enhances audio reproduction nearly all the way up to 20 kHz frequencies

Preset EQ: The Pioneer DEH-P7400HD is equipped with seven EQ presets. You can choose from Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2.

Graphic EQ: The DEH-P7400HD's two Custom EQ modes (1 & 2) let you adjust the head unit's 5-band graphic EQ (100Hz, 315Hz, 1.25kHz, 3.15kHz, & 8kHz). You can adjust each band between +6 to -6.

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6 (Gain: 0dB to +12dB).

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

Three Pair of 4.0-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer DEH-P7400HD features three pair of 4.0-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Crossovers: The DEH-P7400HD employs high pass and low pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speakers.

      • High Pass: The head unit's 12dB/octave high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs.
      • Low Pass: The subwoofer preamp output features an18dB/octave low pass filter so only frequencies lower than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) are output to your connected subwoofer.

Subwoofer Controls: The Pioneer DEH-P7400HD lets you adjust the subwoofer preamp output's phase (normal/reverse) and volume (+6 to -24).

Rear Channel Speaker Output: You can choose to use the rear channel output (speaker and preout) for full-range speaker or subwoofer. If you select "subwoofer", you can connect a 4-ohm subwoofer directly to each rear speaker lead, or a 2-ohm subwoofer to one of the rear speaker leads, without using an external amplifier.

      Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The DEH-P7400HD comes with an IR wireless remote control. The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. The mute button allows you to quickly lower the volume by about 90% (function that cannot be performed from the front panel).

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit to allow you to keep your vehicle's radio steering wheel remote controls when used with the optional PAC SWI-RC Steering Wheel Control Interface Adapter (541SWIRC, sold separately); or the optional Metra ASWC Steering Wheel Control Interface Adapter (120ASWC, sold separately).

      Nothing but trouble

Written By Jeannette H, Olney, MD on Saturday, February 02, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Now that Pioneer is being made in China--buyer beware! Pioneer insisted that I send my less than 8 month-old unit to York, PA for repair. It would periodically lose sound--especially when I played CDs--beginning with a few seconds and ending with 30 or 40 minutes. That's when I gave up and called my installer. By the time I gave him a token payment to uninstall it (and to his credit, he did not want to accept anything), paid the postage and insurance to York Electronics, pay the installer to re-install the unit (it's not his fault)--assuming that I ever get it back--I will have spent the cost of the unit. I should have thrown it in the trash. By-the-way, on February 4th--I will have gone one month with nothing to listen too on my long commute. I have an older car and cannot connect my ipod or iphone to the system.
      Pros:
      Decent quality sound--when it worked!
      Cons:
Flashing lights that would not turn off, Demo mode that would not go away, tiny controls, loss of sound, rigid return policy for Pioneer For this price, I can't believe Pioneer has wasted everyone's time and money! Manual is worthless-who writes these things?

Went with a Pioneer unit specifically for the SuperTuner. I'd say it's better than the stock Toyota radio (made by Panasonic), but it doesn't offer the same improvement I've seen from SuperTuners in the past. There are a number of problems, mostly minor but together they have me on the verge of returning the unit: The manual is one of the worst I've ever read; The faceplate rattles and had to be snugged down with shims; The rear USB is worthless unless you're willing to drill a hole in your dash; No buttons for individual pre-sets - you have to scroll through them to find the one you want; The display is geared towards graphics instead of information. Overall, I can barely give it 3 stars.

      Exactly what I wanted

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

All of my friends want me to drive everywhere now because of how great this receiver sounds and how cool it looks. I was surprised at how much better my stock speakers sounded in my '11 civic when I first installed them. Crutchfield made the diy install thanks to the outfit my car feature, definitely worth every penny. :)
      Pros:
Mixtrax is really cool at night, the lever makes skipping songs easy to do without looking, and the color customization allowed me to match my car's interior lights perfectly.
      Cons:
Mixtrax has the potential to be distracting to the driver at night, and the dj effects don't work with every genre of music-- although if you're listening to classical you shouldn't need flashing lights and a dj, but the feature is optional to use so it's not a big deal.

I do not like the way this reciever operates in comparison to the Alpine in my truck. It seems to be a lot of work to find my songs on my ipod and it seems to have too many gimicky options. It works and sounds decent but I think Pioneer needs to hire someone else to design the controls.

Overall a great head unit especially for the price. Iv tried others and by far this beats them out and many of my friends which are more expensive
      Pros:
light shows!(try not to get too distracted Adjustability Sound quality Everything pretty much
      Cons:
On mixtrax it gets old hearing the scratch noise when you skip songs. And it cuts songs really short and misses the best parts when it tries to do its dj'ing thing. It does do it good sometimes too

I wanted to upgrade my stereo system and wanted to stick to the Pioneer brand. I am upgrading my system with an amp. Unfortunately, the amp I purchased needed seperate pre-amp connections for Front, Back, and Subs. And this radio fit the bill. A great system for the sound you need to kill road noise.
      Pros:
Pioneer quality. Versatility of connections for your system.
      Cons:
Difficulty in shutting it off. Directions can be confusing the way they are written, assuming you know what they are talking about. Relearning menus to make adjustments.

      Holy ****! Awesome radio!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my 2000 Dodge Neon. I am the original owner and for 13 years I wanted to add an after market radio. Well, now I am glad I did and I am glad that I chose this unit! It has every feature I wanted, HD Radio, Iphone capable, MP3 playback, colour scheme that matched my other lights and a CD player (13 years ago I opted for cassette because I thought I would replace the radio anyway). Well, in the 13 years since I waited this little unit came along with all the bells and whistles. This was my first purchase from Crutchfield and it wont be my last! I had a wiring question and a live person answered on the 1st ring and had my info available so no time was wasted to get right to the answer! WOW! The pro-directions were very detailed and covered my vehicle fully. It even had info on how to replace the speakers, which I did not buy from Cruthfield, but had done previously and had to figure it out on my own... Do yourself a favour and go ahead and get it. Don't wait 13 years like I did!
      Pros:
Custom Lighting, Powerful wattage (for a head unit), pro sheets specific to my vehicle, knowledgeable tech support.
      Cons:
Waited too long to do it!

This head unit fit great in my 2000 trans am. Came with all the right harnesses for my monsoon stereo. The only thing that is a little difficult is figuring out how to navigate your way around the unit, but if you have steering wheel controls or you use the remote it comes with it is pretty simple.

      Crutchfield devliers another WIN

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Pioneer DEH-P7400HD is a nice CD/MP3/HD-Radio receiver. The look is great, and Crutchfield provided all the necessary pieces and parts to make the install an easy, one-evening job. One of the few single-DIN units out there with a full dot-matrix LCD display. This was something I started out looking for, and was shocked to find that most of the major brands out there don't even offer it - they want you to buy a video system instead. Pioneer delivers on this one, for sure. Audio quality is the best, as expected with Pioneer. The interface is fairly user-friendly, too, very short learning curve. I was also very pleased to see the USB extension cable in the box - made routing the cable down to the center console for my ipod easy with that extra cable. The Crutchfield mastersheet and install bracket were a perfect guide/fit for installation into my 2002 Chevy Silverado.(See pic here: http://goo.gl/I7qp6.)
      Pros:
Audio Quality, Display, Selectable colors, great design and interface.
      Cons:
Not sure if they really needed to dedicate a separate button for the MIXTRAX feature - I really don't use it that much. The multi-jog dial feels solid, but the flipper button wrapped around it feels a little cheap.

Great Pioneer sound quality is usual however the quality of the manufacturing seems to have degraded quite significantly. The faceplate fills cheap and flimsy the adapter for the wiring harness seems to be junk.

Exactly what I was looking for.

Written By Devon, Seattle, WA on Sunday, March 18, 2012
Installed in a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Did TONS of research for hours on end before settling on this. I was a longtime Pioneer user with my previous car (the AVIC-Z1, one of the first with iPod integration) and I've had lots of hands-on experience with other systems like Kenwood's eXcelon and JVC's Arsenal series. Since the intent for this was 99% iPod interface, I chose it primarily for that.

Installation: First time Crutchfield customer, now one for life. Shipping took 5 days, but you can't argue with free. The pre-purchase modification requirements listed on the site were accurate down to the 1" protrusion. The kit, antenna adapter and harness were all specific to my model and worked flawlessly. Took me a little over an hour, with most of that time spent taping the harness wires and running Pioneer's included USB extension cable through my glove box, where the iPod Classic will live.

UI/Navigation: Pioneer is the ONLY brand in my experience that will continue playing where it left off on your iPod after turning your car off and back on again -- every other brand will reset back to A. This was the #1 reason I stayed with them. Navigating was so intuitive, I was able to do it driving down the road 15 minutes after installing it. Programming presets for HD radio, however, I have yet to figure out. To the manual I go. (It sounds fantastic though, I may actually listen to it.) The colors are way more fun than you'd expect. My girlfriend changes them virtually every time she gets in my car just because she can.
      Pros:
Great sound from the stock speakers, perfect platform to build a proper system around over time. I've stood by Pioneer car audio for 10 years and have no reason to stray now. I bought this blind without looking at a store unit, and it delivered in spades. Try that with another brand. I dare you. You can use a normal iPod cable, instead of being required to purchase a ~$50 adapter! And in case you missed it above, Pioneer includes a USB extender. I was shocked and delighted by this.
      Cons:
Radio UI could use some work, as managing presets is virtually impossible to sort out without consulting the user manual. As a small nitpick, the Mixtrax functionality is basically worthless and shouldn't have gotten its own button on the unit. Other than that, nada.

      Cool x 2

Love the new deck. Very cool and super easy to install. Installed in 2006 Chevy truck with the Pionner XM tuner. Makes a factory radio seem obsolete. Kids love all the colors. Everything works perfectly.
      Pros:
Cool - using the mixtrax from a USB drive and watching the lights flash to the beat. Audio is so customizable really helps for tuning in Subs. Remote is very easy to use. $140 Cheap.
      Cons:
Not so easy to program. It was really strange programming the preset channels for the tuner and XM tuner. Not as easy as expected. Definetly not a deal breaker. You will have to read the instructions and the manual is not so easy to understand.
