Alpine

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Our take on the Alpine SPR-60

by Buck Pomerantz

Exceptional performance, even at high volume

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Like it loud? Alpine designed their Type-R speakers for people who like to turn it up. They'll deliver big, dynamic sound with plenty of bass, and they'll handle lots of volume. They'll work great with your car stereo, but they really come into their own when you power them with an outboard amp.

Fine-tuned for clarity and balance

The SPR-60 6-3/4" speakers feature multi-layer hybrid fiber woofer cones that deliver really strong bass response. Alpine's adapted the specially ridged surround, originally developed for their subs, to these speakers, so you get consistent, extended cone movement that pushes a lot of air. The silk tweeters produce smooth highs that bring out your music's detail and depth with no shrillness. Alpine mounts an EQ ring in front of the tweeters to help disperse the highs for a larger listening "sweet spot" in your ride. Plus, you can swivel the tweeters to focus the sound better for your seating position.

Smaller, stronger neodymium magnets

Alpine uses powerful neodymium magnets which are much smaller than traditional magnets, so the SPR-60's high-density polymer frames will fit into more places than most 6-3/4" speakers. Type-R speakers have earned their reputation in the past as the masters of "crank it to the max," but Alpine has really kicked the performance factor of the latest models up a notch or two.

Note: Alpine describes this model as a 6-1/2" speaker. Most manufacturers designate this same frame size as a 6-3/4" speaker. For simplicity's sake we list it as a 6-3/4" speaker.

Features

Woofers: The Alpine Type-R series coaxial speakers feature multi-layered hybrid fiber woofer cones. For durability and superior linearity, the woofers use rubber surrounds.

HAMR Surround: Type-R speakers use Alpine's multi roll HAMR surround (patent pending), a technology developed for Alpine subwoofers that maintains control and stability at higher volume levels. HAMR surround combines increased cone area and long linear cone excursion for deep, powerful bass response.

Swiveling Tweeters: The speakers are equipped with 1" (25mm) silk dome tweeters. Alpine's EQ Ring improves the tweeter's dispersion characteristics, providing excellent off-axis response. You can also tilt the tweeters up to 15° to focus the sound where it should be, not pointed at your feet.

Neodymium Magnet: The new smaller neodymium magnet on the Type-R series allows the speaker dimensions to be smaller, making them easier to install in a wide variety of vehicles. They are also lighter than designs using standard magnet technology.

HD Polymer Frame: The new Type-R speakers use a revolutionary HD Polymer frame, making the speaker stronger, lighter, and easier to install.

Mounting: Out of the box the SPR-60 is a 6-3/4" speaker. Using the included brackets they are also compatible with standard 6-1/2" applications, Ford 6-1/2" 4-hole applications, and select non-standard GM and Chrysler 6-3/4" applications. Please confirm fit using the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector.

Great speaker for its size

Written By Russ, Jacksonville, FL on Friday, September 07, 2012
Installed in a 1995 Toyota Corolla
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have to admit that when my advisor Troy recommended these speakers, I was skeptical. The magnet looked way too small. But these were the largest speakers that I could get for the small openings in my rear deck and I needed something that could hold its own. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised! They have a very nice tight sound and the bass that they can handle is impressive. I would tell anyone who needs a lot of speaker for a small opening or a great set of mids to give these a shot. You WILL be impressed.
Pros:
Tight bass and ultra crisp highs. More than you would expect from a speaker of this size. Handles plenty of power.
Cons:
None that I have found so far. Extremely satisfied.

These speakers are the bomb! I installed them in the front doors of my 2002 Toyota 4runner LE. The highs and lows are so crisp and the range of these speakers just blew me away! I wish my rear doors had been big enough to fit two more of these babies! Awesome product, couldn't be happier!
Pros:
Easy to install Amazing range Crisp and clear sound

Great speakers

Written By Anonymous, San Jose, CA on Monday, August 20, 2012
Installed in a 2000 Toyota Corolla
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

To start with, I visited several stores and sound tested many speakers and was surprised to find that these Alpine speakers were consistently of of the few best. Others in the same price range often times sounded pretty awful.

I installed these with the Alpine CDE-HD138BT CD Receiver. I briefly tested them with a Toyota stock receiver and was not impressed with the sound (lower power, cheap receiver.) But with the sound with the CDE-HD138BT was night and day. I mention this because you may not get the results you're looking for i you're merely upgrading the speakers and keeping the stock receiver. It all depends.

With the Alpine CDE-HD138BT these speakers sound pretty amazing. I am running with the receiver's power, no amp, but it's clear that with more power these speakers would sound better. Without the amp they sound best at higher volumes but the bass falls off at lower volumes. I'm considering getting, at minimum the Alpine KTP-445U "Power Pack" Amp.

Highs, mids, and lows are all reproduced with amazing accuracy. They don't have strong bass, at least not without an amp, but I really didn't expect much more from a 6-3/4" 2-way speaker. There is no distortion and the highs are so clear that I can easily tell the difference in sound quality between lower an higher bit rate MP3s, how bad Satellite radio quality is, and how amazing CDs and high bit rate MP3s can sound.

I'm very satisfied with these speakers.
Pros:
Amazingly clear highs and mids.
Cons:
Weak bass at low volumes without an amp.

New vechicles need an external amp

Written By rcwithlime, Rochester Ny on Thursday, June 07, 2012

I installed 2 of these with a hight powered head unit and they were great. That vehicle was sold, as the speakers removed and put into a new Silverado. Bites the big one to be sure. The factory unit cannot come close to powering these speakers. Now have a much degraded sound, actually is pathetic. BUT, I am adding an external amp and totally expect to receive even better sound than before. Just mentioning this for those who read from some how speakers with heavier magnets sound so bad with factory head units. It is because the std sterio's output very little power @ 2v, to save $. So stock speakers have tiny magnets. It takes power to push the speaker against a large magnet. Does not mean you have to be loud, just to have the power there. This is where the DB range comes in when you look to purchase speakers. Do not buy more than you need.

Awesome!!!

Written By Dj-Reverb, Tri Cities, Wa. on Tuesday, June 05, 2012

Had a pair of the Alpine SPR 17c's which sounded great! However one went bad and I bought these to replace the old set. WOW! You would never think you would get the quality sound out of speakers having such a small magnets and being so light. These things are AWESOME!!! Blow away SPR-17's. Clarity was amazing even cranked way up! These speakers need some power to really rock so make sure you use an amp. These were installed in my 93 toyota mr2 turbo.
Pros:
light weight, shallower mounting depth, better overall sound quality compaired to last years model.
Cons:
nothing. These are great.

Amazing

Written By Wharfe, US on Thursday, May 31, 2012

Had Alpine factory speakers in my previous car (Dodge) and they were awesome, so I immediately looked at Alpine for the new car. These speakers don't disappoint. Many people suggest using an amp with them. I'm only using my head unit, didn't want to go through the extra work of installing an amp. It's pretty loud as things are, but I would love to hear these speakers at full power with an amp. I can't believe the amount of bass from these tiny things.

Very happy overall. Great price, quality speaker, sounds excellent.
Pros:
Great sound, easy to install.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in my 2012 Scion tC to replaced OEM and they sound amazing. Highs are more clear and the bass produced from just the stock deck is amazing. I cannot wait to power these with an amp and really see what they can do. 100 watts RMS? My deck Might be putting out 40 max, these bad boys are going to come alive once powered by a decent amp. I would recommend getting these.

Perfect for that rear fill

Written By K Fitz, Columbia, SC on Tuesday, August 09, 2011

First, don't expect to be blow away by Alpines new Type-R's if you're running a factory deck or not supplying any after market power to them. In order for these bad boys to impress, put AT LEAST 50W to em.

When I hooked them up to 80W and place in my '07 Grand Cherokee Rear Doors the cab finally gave me that filled sound and balance. Not to mention the quality of the build is incredible for just a 2way 6.5".....

I would not hesitate to recommend these 2ways to anyone using aftermarket power, but if you're down in the 10-12W RMS.....you'll be spending money on something you won't be able to hear.

They're OK

Written By Silverado Man, USA on Friday, July 29, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Maybe it's the stock premium GM/Delco original deck in my Silverado, and limiting their true capability, but I was expecting to be impressed after I swapped out the factory speakers for these Alpines. They're not bad, but I was not impressed.
