About the Sony STR-SL7
Now Sony makes a silver-finish receiver that matches their silver DVD players and Wega® TVs! The STR-SL7's ultra-slim case contains the ingredients a home theater receiver needs: built-in Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, 80 watts x 5 channels of clean power, and a subwoofer preamp output. Plus, you get a handy remote that's pre-programmed to operate a wide range of Sony A/V gear.
The STR-SL7 is definitely designed with today's digital home theater sources in mind: Three of its four A/V inputs require a digital audio source (see "Key Features" below for details). That makes this receiver a great choice to use with a DVD player, Dolby Digital-capable DIRECTV receiver (like Sony's SAT-A65), as well as one of Sony's widescreen XBR2 HDTVs. All video connections are S-video for outstanding picture quality when used with compatible components. You also get a 5.1-channel analog input for connecting a high-resolution, multichannel music source like an SACD player.
You can stack this receiver and one of Sony's equally slim DVD players in the space that a typical receiver alone would occupy. Another elegant sound solution from Sony!

Video Surround Modes:
- Normal
Surround: Normal
Surround includes the following modes:
- Dolby Digital/Dolby Pro Logic: Dolby Digital sources are played with as many channels as recorded; 2-channel stereo sources are decoded with Dolby Pro Logic
- DTS
- Cinema Studio Ex. A: reproduces the sound characteristics of Sony Pictures Entertainment's classic editing studio; uses the 3D sound imaging of the Virtual Multi Dimension mode to create 5 sets of virtual surround speakers from one pair of actual surround speakers
- Cinema Studio Ex. B: reproduces the sound characteristics of Sony Pictures Entertainment's mixing studio; uses the 3D sound imaging of the Virtual Multi Dimension mode to create 5 sets of virtual surround speakers from one pair of actual surround speakers
- Cinema Studio Ex. C: reproduces the sound characteristics of Sony Pictures Entertainment's BGM recording studio; uses the 3D sound imaging of the Virtual Multi Dimension mode to create 5 sets of virtual surround speakers from one pair of actual surround speakers
- Virtual Multi Dimension: uses 3D sound imaging to create an array of virtual rear speakers positioned higher than the listener from a single pair of actual rear speakers
- V.Semi-M. Dimension: uses 3D sound imaging to create virtual rear speakers from the sound of the front speakers without using actual rear speakers. It creates 5 sets of speakers surrounding the listener at a thirty degree angle of elevation.
Audio Surround Modes:
- Hall: reproduces the acoustics of a rectangular concert hall
- Jazz Club: reproduces the acoustics of a jazz club
- Live House: reproduces the acoustics of a 300-seat live house
- Game: obtains maximum audio impact from video game software
Auto Format Decoding: Automatically detects the type of audio signal being input (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic, 2-channel) and performs the proper decoding without adding any effects.
96kHz Sampling Frequency Compatibility: The DVD coaxial digital input jack is compatible with 96kHz, 48kHz, 44.1kHz and 32kHz sampling frequencies.
Note: The Aux and TV Toslink optical digital input jacks are not compatible with digital signals having a sampling frequency of 96kHz; sound may be intermittent if a digital signal with a sampling frequency of 96kHz is input to the Aux and TV optical digital inputs.
Bass Management:
- Front Speakers: you may select "LARGE" or "SMALL"
- Center Speaker: you may select "NO", "LARGE", or "SMALL". If the front speakers are set to "SMALL", the center speaker cannot be set to "LARGE".
- Surround Speakers: you may select "NO", "LARGE" or "SMALL". If the front speakers are set to "SMALL", the surround speakers cannot be set to "LARGE".
- Surround Speaker Position: when using rear speakers, this setting is used for proper operation of the sound fields that create virtual rear speakers; you may select "PL. SIDE" or "PL. BEHIND"
- Surround Speaker Height: you may select "HGT. LOW" or "HGT. HIGH"
- Subwoofer: you may select "S.W. YES" or "S.W. NO"
Sound Field Customizing: Depending on the Mode selected, you can adjust the following parameters:
- Effect Level: the "presence" of the surround effect may be adjusted in 16 steps (0 - 15)
- Wall Type (wall material simulation): 17 steps from hard to soft
- Reverberation Time: may be adjusted in 17 steps
- Front Balance: the balance can be adjusted +/-8 steps
- Surround Balance: the balance can be adjusted +/-8 steps
- Center Level: the level may be adjusted in 1dB steps from -10dB to +10dB
- Surround Level: the level may be adjusted in 1dB steps from -10dB to +10dB
- Sub Woofer Level: the level may be adjusted in 1dB steps from -10dB to +10dB
- LFE Mix: lowers the level of the LFE channel output. You may select "OFF" (mute), or the level may be set from -20 to 0dB in 1dB steps. Note that this effects only the LFE channel, not the bass sent to the sub through bass redirection circuitry.
- Dynamic Range Compressor: you may select standard compression, maximum compression or a compression level from 0.1 to 0.9, in 0.1 steps; the dynamic range compressor feature may be turned off. When active, the dynamic range compressor feature compresses the audio output so there is less variation in volume from Dolby Digital sources; this feature does not work with DTS sources.
Multi Channel Input: Although this unit features built-in Dolby Digital and DTS processing, it also has a 5.1 multi-channel input for use with external multi-channel decoders, including multi-channel SACD players and DVD-Audio players.
Sleep Timer: The unit may be set to automatically turn off after 2 hours, 1 hour and 30 minutes, 1 hour, or 30 minutes.
Overview: The supplied remote is pre-coded to control Sony A/V equipment, including CD players, DAT decks, MD recorders, tape decks, LD players, Video CD players, VCRs, DVD players, TVs, and DSS receivers.
For Sony TVs with picture-in-picture functions, the remote also controls the following functions:
- POSITION: changes the position of the small picture
- SWAP: changes the small and the large picture
- P in P: activates the picture-in-picture function
Front Panel:
- Phones: stereo mini-jack headphone output
Rear Panel:
- Aux In: Toslink optical digital jack and S-video jack;
Note: The Aux Toslink optical digital input jack is not compatible with digital signals having a sampling frequency of 96kHz; sound may be intermittent if a digital signal with a sampling frequency of 96kHz is input to the Aux optical digital input.
- TV In: Toslink
optical digital jack and S-video jack;
Note: The TV Toslink optical digital input jack is not compatible with digital signals having a sampling frequency of 96kHz; sound may be intermittent if a digital signal with a sampling frequency of 96kHz is input to the TV optical digital input.
- DVD In: coax RCA jack and S-video jack; the coax RCA jack is compatible with signals that have a 96kHz sampling frequency. This is NOT AC-3 RF, if you are using a LaserDisc with AC-3 RF output, a demodulator must be purchased separately and connected between the LD player and this unit!
- Antenna Inputs: FM Coax and AM spring clip antenna inputs
- Video In: stereo RCA jacks and S-video jack
- Multi Channel Input: this is a 5.1 multi-channel input consisting of left front, right front, center, left rear, right rear and subwoofer RCA inputs for use with external multi channel decoders
- Monitor Out: S-video jack
- Subwoofer Preamp Out: mono RCA jack
- Speakers: spring clip outputs for front, surround, and center speakers (8-16 ohms)
Backup Memory: Once a sound field is customized, the changes are stored in memory indefinitely, unless the receiver is disconnected from power for about 2 weeks.
