Our take on the JVC KD-HDR50

Recently rated as a "Best Buy" by Consumer's Digest, JVC's KD-HDR50 CD receiver features a built-in HD Radio™ tuner, making it easier than ever to enjoy the excellent sound quality and extra programming options from participating AM and FM stations. HD Radio's digital broadcasts really pump up the sound — FM broadcasts sound almost as good as a CD, while AM stations sound like traditional FM. One more cool feature — you can tag tunes you hear on HD Radio stations, and your iPod will remind you about your picks next time you plug into the JVC.

Great all-around sound
The powerful built-in amplifier and superior digital-to-analog converter will ensure great performances from any source. The iEQ 7-band equalizer gives you pinpoint control over your treble, midrange, and bass, so you can tailor the music to your listening taste and automotive environment. JVC includes a wireless remote that allows you or your passengers to control playback from anywhere in the car.

Play your iPod® and other sources
You can connect newer iPods directly to this receiver's front panel USB input, or use JVC's optional iPod interface to connect an older iPod to the KD-HDR50. You'll control the player from the stereo, so you won't need to fumble around with the iPod itself.

Load up a disc or a USB thumb drive with your MP3 and WMA files for hours of tunes for your next road trip. A handy front-panel auxiliary input lets you add even more sources, like a Dock & Play satellite radio or an MP3 player.

Adding on
Two sets of preamp outputs let you add amps and subs, and a subwoofer setting lets you adjust the crossover point and overall level of your subwoofer system for precise tuning. Hook up Bluetooth® with JVC's optional adapter for safer hands-free calls, or tap into the commercial-free music and entertainment of satellite radio with an optional tuner.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Features

MOS-FET Amplifier: The JVC CD player features a CEA-2006 compliant MOS-FET 20 Watts RMX x 4-channel amplifier in 4ohms at 1% THD+N with an 80 dBA signal-to-noise-ratio.

DiAS II Tuner: This model is equipped with JVC's Digital Intelligent Advanced Sensing tuner, offering unprecedented analog radio performance with higher sensitivity and selectivity. You can set up to 18 FM and 6 AM stations as presets. Presets can be set manually, or automatically using Strong-station Sequential Memory (SSM). If an FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to "Mono" operation. You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

Built-in HD Radio: With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. HD Radio Technology will deliver high-quality digital sound. AM digital will have FM-like quality in stereo, while FM digital will have CD-like quality with static free and clear reception. In addition, AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. Many HD Radio stations also offer more than one channel of programming. This service is called multicasting. You can setup the KD-HDR50 to search only HD Radio stations. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit HDRadio.com

HD Radio/iTunes Tagging: This iTunes Tagging feature lets you Tag songs you hear on HD Radio stations and stores the info on your connected iPod through the unit's USB port. The next time you connect your iPod to iTunes, you will be able to preview your selections and then purchase and download them from directly from iTunes.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-HDR50 can play MP3/WMA (32-320 kbps) files that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, or Romeo. Each disc can have a maximum of 8 folder hierarchies, 255 folders, and no more than a total of 512 files on each disc. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3 or WMA files.

Intelligent EQ (7-Band iEQ): This model has Rock, Classic, Pops, Hip Hop, Jazz, Flat, and User preset EQ curves. The User preset can be adjusted to your preference and stored in memory. For the User preset, you can independently adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz, 150 Hz, 400 Hz, 1 kHz, 2.4 kHz, 6 kHz, and 15 kHz. The level of each frequency can be adjusted from -10 to +10 in increments of two.

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-HDR50 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Subwoofer Output: In addition to the 2.5-volt gold-plated front preamp output, this unit has a set of 2.5-volt gold-plated subwoofer preamp outputs. The subwoofer output has independent level control, adjustable from 00 to 08, and a selectable low-pass crossover. You can select a cutoff frequency of 72, 111, or 157Hz.

Front Panel Auxiliary Input: A front panel stereo minijack is provided to allow the connection of a portable audio source. Just connect your portable cassette, MD or MP3 player to this unit, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system.

Optional Input Adapter: An optional JVC Line Input Adapter (item number 105KSU57 or 257KSU58) may be used to provide an additional auxiliary audio only input on this unit. This feature allows you to connect a portable audio player, such as a portable MP3 player, to this unit as an additional audio source. The adapter connects to the CD changer input on this unit. When the adapter is connected to this unit, a CD changer cannot be connected.

Source Level: You can adjust the volume (-10 to +10) of each source (except FM) compared to the unit's FM volume level. The volume level will automatically increase or decrease when you change sources.

Disc Protection: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust; playback starts automatically.

Disc Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.

Variable Illumination: You can change the head unit's display and button illumination between 29 preset shades of white, blue, purple, red, orange, yellow, aqua, and green. Additionally there is a custom User setting, allowing you to individually adjust the intensity of the red, green, and blue between 0 and 31, resulting in 32,767 possible color options.

Dimmer: When 12 volts is applied to the illumination lead and the dimmer set to Auto, the display dims. The dimmer can also be set to Off (normal brightness at all times) or On (display is always dimmed).

Clock Display: While playing a CD, you can switch between the clock display and the CD elapsed time display (the track number always appears). While listening to the radio you can switch between the clock display and the station frequency display. When you press the Display button during power off, the unit will turn on, display the clock for 5 seconds, then shut off. This can be done with the ignition on or off. In the menu, the clock can be set to display with the unit on or off, only turning off when the ignition is turned off ("keyed" operation).

Wireless Remote Control: The KD-HDR50 comes supplied with a wireless remote control (RM-RK50). The remote contains Power, Attenuator, Sound, Source, Tracking and Volume functions.

External Device Controls

USB Input: The JVC KD-HDR50 features a front-panel USB type-A port. This allows you to play USB mass storage devices loaded with MP3/WMA (32-320 kbps) audio files. For the unit to recognize the USB medium, it must be specified as a mass storage device and formatted using FAT 12, FAT 16, or FAT 32. This unit can recognize a total of 65,025 files and 255 folders (a maximum of 255 files per folder). This unit will recognize a total of 25 characters for file/folder names. This unit cannot recognize a USB device whose rating is other than 5V and exceeds 500 mA. An integrated sliding-cover is supplied to protect the USB connection when not in use.

Direct iPod Connection: The JVC KD-HDR50's front-panel USB port also acts as an iPod high-speed direct connection when used with the USB/iPod cable that came with your iPod. An additional iPod cable is available (item number 472USBCBLE) so you can leave one at home and one in the car. Menu options allow iPod control from the radio's front panel or from the iPod itself. The iPod is charged whenever it is connected with the head unit turned on. The JVC KD-HDR50 is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features (as of Dec. 2009):

Excellent Head Unit

Written By Chris, Oregon on Wednesday, March 09, 2011

I have had this stereo in my truck for more than a year. I replaced an Alpine
head unit so I could get HD Radio and USB control of my iPhone. I have had
no issues and the sound quality is excellent. I highly reccomend this stereo.

JVC KD-HDR50

Written By , Baytown, TX on Friday, July 30, 2010

marginal product. Constantly loses menu settings. Has some internal short to right front speakers. Will click and have good connection then fades to a muted level on only that speaker. All other speakers work fine. Would not consider another JVC product again.

Overall, I like.

Written By Scott, Colorado Springs, CO on Saturday, January 16, 2010

Nice unit with a lot of features for the money. Installed nicely and the colors are cool! I don't like the way you have to search for stations...hard to do and distracting while driving. Should have a loudness button...the bass is lacking.

Good but not great

Written By Hairy Alaskan, Anchorage, Alaska on Monday, November 30, 2009

I've had this unit about 8 months now.
It was super easy to install considering I had an old JVC deck installed already. The iPod and USB control is great. I use the USB feature all the time and no longer have to carry around multiple cds with mp3s on them.
HD radio is a nice feature but not really worth it up here. The signal is not very strong in the AM range and FM has nothing I want to listen to. Can't fault the unit for that.
What I do not like about the unit however is the sound and station navigation. My older JVC unit sounded much better than this unit. The bass is either faint or muddy. There is no "Loud" setting so the sound always seems lacking. I have messed with the audio settings for months trying to get the sweet bass levels my previous unit could produce but to no avail. I have it sounding good but not great.
My biggest annoyance however is with the process necessary to change radio stations. I am a constant station surfer when listening to FM and this unit makes this simple task rather cumbersome. I miss the old numerical buttons on my older unit. The jog dial is very sensitive making changing stations in the winter time on the bumpy roads even more annoying.
Despite these gripes, I do like the looks of the unit and the iPod functionality. I love the USB feature, though navigating through 4 Gigs of music on a thumb drive can be a little time consuming.
Again a good unit but not great.

JVC KD-HDR50

Written By Rob, MASS on Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Terrific radio with HD built in. Charges the ipod as well. I got this one for the Saturn and the Toyota. Like the fact that I can change the color of the screens to match the rest of the dash color.

Good feature set for the price

Written By Steve, Franklin, IN on Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Has a lot of nice features for the money and the sound quality is far superior to my factory stereo. Setup is fairly easy, but I don't necessarily find the menus\controls easy to navigate while driving as the control knob is pretty sensitive. All in all, though, I would recommend this product.

Good, does what it says but AM reception is useless.

Written By Jimmy, Anoka, Mn on Monday, October 12, 2009

I haven't installed an after market radio in 20 years. The stock radio on my Kia Spectra5 didn't have an aux input so I decided to replace it. This install was fairly painless. I much appreciate the length that Crutchfield goes to make it easy. I had to call them once during installation, some guy answered my question quickly and I was off the phone within 5 minutes, start to finish. I'm glad I went with them over the cheaper stores just for their hand holding.

The radio works good. It does make the stock speakers sound better for sure. They actually have some base now. I was surprised.

On the down side, not having preset buttons does kinda suck. Maybe it's just the old guy in me but I miss just hitting a button and going to a station. Now it's a couple of button hits. But the worst part of all is the AM reception. It's virtually useless. Basically, I no longer have am radio. There were a few talk stations that I like to listen too. I did research the best FM reception I could get for what I was spending, this radio works great on FM. But it's much more difficult to research AM reception. Not too many care about it.

But, the reasons I was sold on it, the HD radio and the aux input for my ipod and phone, work great. So I can't complain.

Good Value

Written By Matthew, LI, NY on Sunday, September 27, 2009

I picked up this head unit for the HD radio. I could not have been more disappointed. Probably just the distance I am from NYC (40+ miles). I rarely get anything in. I really wanted AM radio to come in nice. This just didn't happen. Otherwise, it's a great value. I wish there were more buttons on the front. Seems like a giant button for tagging music while listening to the radio could have been replaced. What a useless feature. Ipod controls are by the HU or on the ipod. It charges and plays through the USB which is nice. I use a 16 GB flash drive to play music. Works great. Just remember that it will play the music in alphabetical order based on the file, not according to the ID3 tags. Going through the station presets is terrible. I don't really care though as I only listen to the ipod or jump drive (I do listen to AM radio though).

My next HU, I would probably consider a unit where the USB input is hidden or not on the front. Also, probably wouldn't get one with a CD slot (totally useless nowadays).

Nice features but HD Radio lacking

Written By Dustbin, New York, NY on Tuesday, September 22, 2009

I got tired of lugging around my wireless transmitter to get tunes from my MP3 players onto my Ford Focus 2000 factory radio. Decided to get the JVC KD-HDR50 to cover all my bases and was excited about trying HD Radio. Installation was a breeze--thanks Crutchfield for the straightforward instruction sheets. The JVC looks a little too new, shiny and black for my dash but oh well.

The main feature that I wanted, front AUX input, works very well and sounds great. I also tried connecting my 1G iPod nano via the front USB and was impressed that it worked--I could navigate the iPod's contents with the JVC's menu system. The iPod streaming through USB also sounded great. I tried an ordinary audio CD and that also sounded great. Have not tried MP3 CD's nor MP3's loaded onto a USB thumb drive yet.

The disappointment comes from the HD Radio "feature." It's obvious that HD Radio is not ready for prime time. When it worked, the music sounded very tinny and was painful to listen to. When I went for a drive recently, HD stations constantly drifted in and out, and I was less than 25 miles away from the city/radio towers. I can adjust volumes for each source but can't EQ for each source. Although, come to think of it, HD Radio is so lacking in bottom, there's probably no amount of EQ'ing that would help.

If I avoided HD Radio feature I could have :
1) saved myself at least 20 bucks and went with similarly featured JVC unit
2) opened up other options from other manufacturers

Great Stereo

Written By Josh, Austin, TX on Sunday, September 13, 2009

I've never really used JVC products at all. I was at a brick and mortar looking at a new head unit and this model caught my eye. First of all it was one of the only models under $300 that worked with my iPhone through the USB port, the AUX in is very nice too. But the built in HD radio has turned out to be bigger with me than I thought. True some stations broadcast at a much lower bit rate and you can really hear it, but its nice to always have music to listen to.

Of course I bought from Crutchfield, free shipping, no tax, and TONS of extras made this a good buy for me.
