Velbon's economical and sturdy CX-586 makes a great entry-level tripod. Its three-section telescopic legs extend it to almost five feet tall — great for snapping steady landscapes or capturing long video shots of your child on the soccer field. The included panhead with a joystick-style grip lets you tilt your camera up, down, or to the right, or smoothly pan your camera across a scene. Plus, the legs are made out of aluminum to ensure an incredibly stable, vibration-free platform for your camera.

This tripod neatly folds up to just over two feet long, and it's light enough to carry around for extended periods of time without straining your back or shoulder. The quick-release plate can be locked into the tripod socket of your camera and left in place. That way, you can quickly attach and detach your camera from the tripod when those unexpected photo opportunities come up.

    Overview: The Velbon CX-586 is a full-size video tripod that can be used with camcorders up to 12 pounds. It has a PH-358 panhead which has a true oil fluid effect for smooth, comfortable action when panning and tilting. The QB-5RL quick release platform lets you easily attach and detach your camcorder. It has a universal 1/4" mounting screw. The CX-586 weighs 3.97 pounds, and comes with a zippered nylon carrying case.

    Geared Center Column: The CX-586 has a geared center column for elevating your camcorder up to an additional 11.5 inches.

    Legs: The CX-586 has lightweight, 3-section legs with quick-lever leg locks and rubber feet. The upper legs have a diameter of 23.2 mm (7/8"). The tripod features radial leg braces for maximum stability. When fully extended, the CX-586 has a 60.8" footprint.

    Bubble Level: The CX-586 features a leveling bubble for maximum balance, and to get your shots level perfect on any ground angle.

    Very usefully for most occasions for semi-pro users.
    Pros:
    Low price, good stiffness for light tripod.
    Cons:
    I wish it were 5-10" higher to film over people's heads.

    I recently bought a dedicated video camera and discovered that you need a good tripod to pan and tilt with smooth action. The CX-586 is designed for video cameras and works great. I've been able to create videos without jerky movements. Some higher-end tripods allow you to switch heads but this one doesn't appear to be removable.
