Canon

Our take on the Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens

by Dave Bar
CANON AUTHORIZED DEALER

Canon's EF 28mm f/1.8 lens offers excellent low-light picture-taking capability and delivers clear, detailed photos. Its 28mm focal length provides versatile wide-angle shooting for 35mm film and full-frame digital SLRs, letting you capture full-length portraits or an entire room with a single shot. Or use it as a standard lens with an APS-C camera for great everyday shooting — it produces a field of view similar to that of the naked eye. This lens' large maximum aperture also makes it ideal for flash-free indoor photography. And Canon's ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) gives you fast, silent autofocus.

  • 28mm f/1.8 wide-angle lens

    Features

Overview: The Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM is an ultra-wide-angle lens.

Compatibility: The EF 28mm f/1.8 USM is an EF Canon lens; meaning it's compatible with all Canon digital SLRs (those that accept EF and EF-S lenses, plus those that accept EF only), as well as Canon EOS film SLRs.

Lens Construction: The Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM features a lens construction with 10 elements in 9 groups.

    Angle Of View:

    • Diagonal: 75°
    • Vertical: 46°
    • Horizontal: 65°

Ultrasonic Motor (USM): With the Ultrasonic Motor (USM), you can expect fast and quiet focusing capability.

Auto/Manual Focus: To shoot in Autofocus mode, set the focus mode switch on the lens to AF. To manually focus the camera, set the switch to MF, and focus by turning the focusing ring. The focusing ring always works, regardless of the focus mode.

Focusing Range: You can set the focusing distance range from 0.82' (10") to infinity. By setting a suitable focusing distance range, the autofocusing time will be shorter.

Infinity Compensation Mark: To compensate for shifting of the infinity focus point that results from changes in temperature, the lens features an Infinity Compensation Mark. The infinity position at normal temperature is the point at which the vertical line of the L mark is aligned with the distance indicator on the distance scale.

Infrared Index: The infrared index corrects the focus setting when using monochrome infrared film. Focus on the subject manually, then adjust the distance setting by moving the focusing ring to the corresponding infrared index mark.

Optional Accessories: You can attach optional 58mm filters to the mounting thread on the front of the lens. You can also attach the optional Canon EW-63II lens hood.

Good prime lens at a decent price, compact but doesn't feel cheap, great for low-light situations, good bokeh. As always, great customer service and quick delivery from Crutchfield. Very happy with my purchase

Great lens for 1.6 Sensor Canon Camera

Written By Ron, Granite Falls, WA on Tuesday, October 23, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this lens because the nifty-fifty just wasn't the lens that I needed when taking photos inside. I liked the 1.8 aperture of the nifty-fifty; but, it's dc drive was too slow to focus and the focal length was too tight with my crop-sensor camera (40D) This 28mm 1.8 lens addresses these issues perfectly. Low light performance is fabulous. I now rarely use the flash inside and, as a result, skin tones appear more natural. Also, the ultrasonic focusing is spot-on and entirely silent. The look/feel of this lens is as good as any L-series lens. The manual focus ring has a nice butter-like feel to it. This lens also has the ability to focus accurately at extremely close distances. Thats a nice feature too. People say that this lens is soft wide-open. Perhaps thats true. But, my photos don't seem to show any problems shooting at 1.8. Don't be afraid to buy this lens. It is a quality built lens with exceptionally good low light performance and a nice fast ultrasonic focus mechanism. This is the right prime lens for a crop-sensor body to have a normal focal length. And, someday, when I step-up to a full-frame sensor, it will be entirely compatible. The only odd thing about this lens is that it fits a little tighter to the camera body than any other lens. You'll notice a subtle difference when mounting this lens. It fits perfectly - making other lens seem looser by comparison. Again, this is a good thing, feel-wise.
    Pros:
Fast Focus. Low light performance. Great build feel.
    Cons:
A little expensive - but, worth it.

    Nice compact lens

Written By Matt, Ormond Beach, FL on Saturday, November 12, 2011

I purchased this from Crutchfield about a month ago and used it with my Canon T2i for a recent trip to the Grand Canyon. With UV and CPL filters attached, I got nice crisp pictures that I was very happy with. The USM auto focus was fast, silent, and produced very consistent results. I also used several other lenses at the Canyon. While the pictures from this lens are not quite as impressive as those from a Canon L lens, they were not far off and for the money, I like this lens. The compact size & light weight made it a pleasure to work with, especially when compared to most of the zooms that I was using. Low light pictures taken at Vegas came out great. With the 1.6 sensor on the T2i this is not a real wide angle lens, but very comfortable to work with (44.8mm). I shot the pictures in RAW format and using Canon's DPP program the photo's looked great even when cropped quite a bit. I found the build quality to be good. This was a step up from some of the kit lenses provided, especially those without the USM. Not just because of the USM. Overall it seems more solid. I'm sure I'll use this lens quite a bit and the purchase from Crutchfield was great as always !
    Pros:
Compact size, fast autofocus, good for low light photos. Nice crisp pictures.
    Cons:
    A bit expensive.

Combined with my 40D this lens is OK

Written By Greg, Long Island NY on Monday, May 16, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I tested this lens with a homemade resolution chart and found it to be OK.
I tested it for both indoor and outdoor images and found it to OK.
I wanted a small light normal lens and that is what I got.
    Nothing spectacular just normal.
My only complaint is the price. Why it is so high? I don't know.
Once upon a time they gave you a normal lens with an SLR body.
    Those days are gone forever.
