Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Pioneer DEH-P4000UB

by Ken Nail

Want a stylish in-dash stereo that will handle your media with ease? Pioneer's DEH-P4000UB CD receiver allows you to connect and control a variety of media devices, including your iPod®, through its built-in USB input. The vibrant display renders 16 characters for artist and title information, while the user-friendly control knob makes it easy to access menus and scroll through your files.

And Pioneer keeps the entertainment options coming. The receiver plays MP3, WMA, and AAC files that you've burned to a disc, and it includes a front auxiliary input for easy connection of optional audio sources. You can also add a satellite radio or CD changer to the dedicated input. Connect Pioneer's optional Bluetooth® adapter and enjoy the convenience of taking calls through your stereo.

The amplifier delivers plenty of power for accurate sound from your speakers, with built in high- and low-pass filters to optimize speaker performance. Pioneer's Easy EQ offers six preset sound curves for quick fixes, plus adjustable bass, midrange, and treble controls for custom tone shaping. If you want more kick from your system, use the stereo's three sets of preamp outputs to connect external amplifiers.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check the adapter's "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

      Features
      External Device Controls

      Features

Overview: The Pioneer DEH-P4000UB is an AM/FM/CD receiver that can also play MP3, WMA, WAV, and AAC files on disc as well. It has a front panel 3.5mm auxiliary input for portable devices, as well as a rear panel USB input for your iPod or other USB-based portable audio player or USB memory device. Additional accessories that are compatible with this unit include Bluetooth Audio and Bluetooth Telephone (when the optional Pioneer Bluetooth adapter is connected), XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio (with an optional satellite radio tuner and antenna), and a multi-CD player. See section below on External Device Controls for details on compatibility.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-P4000UB are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-P4000UB are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
      • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-P4000UB is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

MP3/WMA/WAV Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA/WAV files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

AAC Decoding: This unit will playback AAC files encoded by iTunes recorded onto CDs, however files purchased from the iTunes Music Store (.m4p file extension) are not compatible. Tracks recorded at transmission rates of 16-320 kbps are playable on this unit.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Sound Retriever effect.

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-P4000UB is equipped with a 3-band parametric EQ with 6 preset EQ settings. You can boost or cut each frequency band by +/- 12dB at 2dB intervals. Features of the Easy EQ include:

      • Selectable Center Frequencies:
        • Low: 40, 80, 100, or 160 Hz
        • Mid: 200, 500, 1k, or 2k Hz
        • High: 3k, 8k, 10k or 12k Hz
      • Preset EEQ Settings: Powerful, Super Bass, Vocal, Natural, Custom, and EQ Flat
      • Selectable Q Factors: 2 Narrow, 1 Narrow, 1 Wide, and 2 Wide

Selectable Loudness Levels: Loudness compensates for deficiencies in the low and high frequencies at low volumes. You can choose from three levels of loudness:

      • Low: +3.5dB (100Hz), +3dB (10kHz)
      • Mid: +10dB (100Hz), +6.5dB (10kHz)
      • High: +11dB (100Hz), +11dB (10kHz)

List Button: The List button on the front panel allows you to the track title list, folder list, file list, preset channel list, or disc title list, depending upon the source. Once the List button is pressed, you can turn the multi-control knob to view each item on the list. To select the highlighted item, you can press the multi-control. This allows you to quickly make selections from most any source.

Auxiliary Input: The DEH-P4000UB is equipped with a front panel 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable MP3 player, DVD, or VCR. Once AUX 1 is selected as a source, you can change the source display of the input to any 10-character name. A second auxiliary device can be connected to this unit when an optional adapter is connected to the IP-Bus connector on the rear panel. Both Aux 1 and Aux 2 must be turned on in the setup menu in order to be selected as a source. See below for more information on the 2nd Auxiliary Input.

2nd Auxiliary Input Ready: In addition to the front panel minijack Aux input (AUX 1), you can connect a second auxiliary component by connecting an IP-Bus/RCA connector. The CD-RB10 lets you connect one auxiliary component, and the CD-RB20 lets you connect an auxiliary component and a CD changer via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit. The 10-character name of the connected auxiliary component can be entered into memory, and will appear as you cycle through the sources.

Subwoofer Output: The unit has a pair of dedicated non-fading RCA subwoofer outputs with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level. When the subwoofer output is turned on, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

High Pass Filter: If you do not want low frequency sounds to play from the front or rear speaker outputs, you can turn on the 12dB/octave High Pass Filter. The HPF has a selectable cutoff frequency (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz). Only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output through the speakers.

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

Disc Naming: You can use the disc title input feature to store up to 48 CD titles in the unit's memory. Each title can be up to 10 characters long.

OEL Display: The DEH-P4000UB features a black background with a blue Organic EL display, which takes advantage of MP3, WMA, iPod, XM Radio, and Sirius, plus CD Text-encoded discs. This large display makes it easy to read and cycle through the song title, artist, and other text used by these sources.

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Function Confirmation Tones: The receiver emits an audible beep tone each time a button is pressed. These function confirmation tones cannot be turned off.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display be pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display. When the unit is off but the ignition is on, the button illumination will light up when the vehicle's headlights are turned on.

Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. You can turn the dimmer function On or Off. The orange/white illumination wire must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit in order for this feature to work.

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. If the front panel is not detached from the head unit within five seconds of turning off the ignition, a warning tone will sound. The warning tone can be turned off in the menu, if desired. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (item #142DFC2C) can be purchased for this unit.

Remote Control: The DEH-P4000UB comes with a wireless remote control (CXC8885). The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. The attenuator button allows you to quickly lower the volume by about 90%, a function that cannot be performed from the front panel. The head unit also has a 3.5mm minijack on the back panel for connecting an optional wired remote control, such as the CD-MR70 or CD-MR80 (130CDMR70 or 130CDMR80). In addition, the PAC SWI-PS steering wheel remote interface is compatible with this head unit.

      External Device Controls

iPod Interface: The DEH-P4000UB can control and playback songs on an iPod. This unit supports only iPods with a standard Dock Connector. (Please see compatibility list below for your model and software version.) You can connect the iPod using the unit's USB input (a dock connector to USB cable, such as the one supplied with your iPod, or the optional 130CDIU50, is required). When connected via USB, you can choose to control the iPod from the head unit or the iPod itself. (This function only works on iPod classic, iPod touch, and 2nd and 3rd generation nano only. You can still change songs from the head unit, even when you are controlling the iPod manually.) You can perform multiple search functions, including playlist, genre, artist, and album searches. While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the USB connection will power and charge your iPod. The DEH-P4000UB is compatible with the following iPod models:

      • iPod video (5th generation)
      • iPod classic (80/120/160GB)
      • iPod nano (1st/2nd/3rd/4th generation)
      • iPod touch (1st/2nd generation)
      • iPhone/iPhone3G

USB Input: In addition to connecting an iPod, the rear panel USB input allows you to connect a USB portable audio player or USB flash memory that is USB Mass Storage Class compliant.

Optional USB Adapter: If the head unit's built-in USB input is being used, you can connect a USB adapter (130CDUB100, sold separately) to the IP-Bus port to playback audio from a portable audio player that features a USB interface. This USB adapter features a IP-Bus pass-through for daisy chaining another IP-Bus compatible component.

IP-Bus Changer Controls: You can add an IP-Bus-compatible 6-disc or 12-disc Pioneer CD changer, and control it from the head unit. The unit feature the following CD-changer features.

      • ITS (Instant Track Selection) Programming: The ITS function can be used to program automatic playback of up to 99 tracks per disc for up to 100 discs. With changers sold before the CDX-P1250 and CDX-P650, up to 24 tracks can be stored in the playlist.
      • Direct Disc Selection: You can directly select discs 1-6 by pressing the corresponding button number on the front panel or remote. Discs 7-12 can be selected by pressing and holding the corresponding button number, such as button 1 for disc 7, etc.
      • CD Track Scan: The beginning of each track on the selected disc plays for about 10 seconds before moving onto the next track and continues until you make your selection.
      • CD Text Display: When used with a CD Text-compatible Pioneer CD changer, this unit will display the titles of CD Text encoded discs that are played in the changer. When playing a CD Text disc on a CD Text compatible changer, you cannot switch to the Disc Title Input mode. CD Text disc titles, artist names and track titles longer than 8 characters may be scrolled once to reveal the entire string of text by holding down the Display button.
      • CD Sound Quality Adjustment: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "DBE" (dynamic bass emphasis) functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the changer. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortions caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "DBE" function boosts bass frequencies to give your music a more full sound.

Note: For these functions to work, they must be supported by the Pioneer CD changer.

Can't beat the price, good performance.

Written By Steve, New Cumberland, PA on Thursday, February 18, 2010

Awesome purchase for the price. I've always had good luck with Pioneer head units and this is no exception. I wanted to upgrade from the stock radio in my truck and I went to Crutchfield's website.

The DEH-p4000ub was on their home page, so I looked into it. I didn't want to deal with the expense of an ipod, so the thought of plugging in a flash drive seemed like the way to go. I bought a 16GB Flash drive, loaded it full of songs and that was that. The unit performed very well. The controls were a little difficult to get used to.

As for as Crutchfield, the package came earlier than predicted and included everything except an antenna adapter. No complaints on that, I got one locally.

So yes, I would recommend this unit or the newer versions. And after dealing with Crutchfield, I have been singing their praises. Thanks again guys.

      Pioneer DEH-P4000UB

Written By Jeremy, Wichita, KS on Wednesday, May 13, 2009

      1. no phone-interrupt wire
What??? I didn't know anyone would make a car stereo in the last 3 years that didn't have this feature.

      2. defaults to usb (if plugged in)
When the stereo is powered on, it auto-detects the usb port looking for a device, and if detected, auto-plays. Extremely annoying, to say the least.

      3. not enough power for some usb devices
Apparently the stereo outputs a max of 0.5mA to usb devices. Not enough to spin up my Passport external usb drive.

      4. reads files in order they were copied to usb
It physically reads the folders/files from the drive in the order they appear on the device. I.E. the music files are most likely not going to be in alphabetical / numerical order, which is great if you like random play, but sucks when searching for anything.

      5. folder/file search defaults to beginning
Even if you're halfway down your list of songs, the file search feature starts from the beginning, instead of from where you currently are.

      6. skipping during random play is not random
If you don't want to listen to the current song and you skip to the next song, it doesn't pick a random song, it skips to the next song on the hard drive (i.e. if you are listening to song 3 in folder 5 during random play and skip ahead, the next song played is song 4 in folder 5 - not very random).

First off this is a wonderful head unit, it would have my four stars the only problems with it is minor. It took me awhile to get used to where all the controls are (audio settings, and all options)there are few buttons so it takes awhile to get used to. Also when hooking up my mp3 player to it's front aux jack, only my right side speakers played the music. This angered me and I couldn't solve it

      Great for Price Performance

Written By Mr. Moore, Detroit, MI on Monday, March 16, 2009

Installed Receiver ~a year ago, and I love. I mounted it at a 90° angle, and CDs play awesome, even with the two subs all the way up. Also, the USB and AUX ports work great, I have an 8 gig flash hooked up to the USB and it preforms great. The only quark I notice is that after a while the seek position will change and rewind a few seconds when the radio is powered off and powered back on. So, you cut the car off or take the face plate while your favorite song is on, and when you cut it back on it starts playing ~10 seconds before the part it stopped on. By no means am I frustrated by this, but just thought some people might like to know. No reason to go with the more expensive models if you dont need bluetooth right-away, b/c this model takes a pioneer bluetooth add-on for use with it in the future.

      Install note for '03 Silverado

Written By Ron G., Midway Ga on Saturday, February 14, 2009

Overall a good Receiver unit. Just installed in my son's truck this afternoon. He is happy with it, so it is great. As with most aftermarket units, you have to like unreadable face panel controls. Install information given by Crutchfield is not quite accurate for the '03 Silverado. Their information indicates that you must "Cut out the metal rear support bracket to make room for your new receiver". That is not true, it fits in there fine.

great upgrade for my '04 ram

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i went to a local store to have an after market stereo installed in my '04 ram with the infinity system in it. after they took my truck back and an hour and a half later the installer informed me that they didn't have the correct wiring harness for my truck. needless to say i was not happy. so i got my money back, went home and got rite on the crutchfield site and ordered the same stereo (pioneer DEH-P4000UB) and the correct harness. the harness was pricey but it was half off because i bought the head unit too. the install kit and the antena adaptor were free along with instrcutions on how to take my dash apart. i could not be happier with how much better my system sounds with this head unit matched up with the infinity stock speakers. thank you crutchfield for your great site and service.

      Good Value

Written By Edwin, Hattiesburg, MS on Monday, February 02, 2009
Installed in a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the P4000UB as a birthday present for my wonderful wife. (yes, I'm trying to get some points here). She loves her Ipod, but the factory radio in our 2002 jeep had no Ipod connection. The sound quality with the new Pioneer was dramatically better. As usual, Crutchfield provided great written instructions. The fit of the bezel is very good.

I did have problems with the initial programming of the Pioneer. The first thing you have to do is turn off the demo mode. This is the second time I have been bitten by this on a Pioneer radio. Actually it was my wife who read the instructions and suggested that it might be in demo mode. It would be nice if the unit did not come from the factory in demo mode, since 99.99% of the units are not going to be used as a demo.

I plugged the communications cable to the radio on the XM module to the in connector instead of the out connector. This was stupid on my part, since the connectors are color coded. Actually after hours of trouble shooting this problem and did I mention that I am an electrical engineer, it was my wife who asked "Are you sure you have that blue thingy plugged into the right hole". This info might be helpful to another stupid person out there, who might do the same thing.

After correcting these two errors everything worked perfectly.

      Pioneer DEH-P4000UB

Written By Matthew, Hotlanta on Wednesday, January 28, 2009
Installed in a 2002 Honda Civic EX
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I loved how slick and simple the aesthetic of this unit was. Its screen is very well-lit, which was important in my Civic (as its dash faces upwards). But there's an ergonomic penalty for such a clean, simple interface:

1.) The Rotary Commander dial is overly sensitive to up/down/left/right commands *in comparison to* "enter" commands (pushing the button straight in). So while you mean to push the button in it will OFTEN slide in a different direction.

2.) You cannot get immediate-access to many minor features - so if you enjoy fine-tuning settings on your HU often you will become quickly agitated with this.

That complaining aside I love having USB (provided extension cord runs to my glovebox for a USB Thumbdrive or iPod hookup - totally discrete) and my wife loves having a 'pretty' HU in her Civic. :-)

      Poor Controls, Good Sound

Written By Michael, Lincolnville, Maine on Saturday, January 17, 2009
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me start by saying the DEH-P4000UB is a good unit for the money: Good sound, including settings specifically designed to add life to MP3s. Lots of features, and a solid radio tuner (which was a priority for me).

But the user interface is miserable! Want to go to a different radio preset? Since there are no buttons, you have to scroll through them. So instead of getting to the next station in the press of one button, it might take three or more.

That's just the beginning. Everywhere you want to go, you have to drill down through menus and scroll through selections. Nearly every action uses the multi-control knob with nearly no dedicated buttons. Good luck keeping your attention on your driving while trying to change "loudness".

Another gripe is that some of the head unit's iPod controls change the settings in the iPod. So, if I hit the repeat feature on the head unit, the only way I can turn of the repeat function is to unplug the iPod, go into "Settings" on the iPod, turn that feature off, and then reattach the iPod to the USB connector. I'm tempted to play the iPod through the AUX instead, and simply control the iPod from the iPod's own controls.

You get the idea. This is a nice sounding unit, but when I want to add a radio preset, or change the sound shape, and I end up telling myself, "It's just not worth it," something's not right.

Nice Radio! Crutchfield instructions are great!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this radio with the XM adaptor as a gift for my daughter for
Christmas. My daughter and I installed it into her 1999 Honda Civic. The
installation went very smoothly thanks to Chrutchfield's excellent install kit
and wonderful instructions. The radio looks great in the dash. The
removable faceplate is a good idea (she lives in Philadelphia). The reception
and sound quality is excellent, better than the stock radio. The radio has
nice features including iPod. My daughter is very, very happy. I am a long
time customer of Crutchfield and I continue to be impressed with their
friendly service and technical knowledge. I did have a couple of technical
questions that were answered correctly and competently. Thank you
      Crutchfield for another satisfying purchase.

      Great for Iphone

Written By Matt, Tulsa, Ok on Friday, January 16, 2009
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this stereo because I'm already pioneer loyal but also because of it's ability to work with Iphone. It will even charge the phone and you can use all other phone abilities while it is plugged into the stereo. You can even still recieve calls. It will cut out the music for the call to come in and thwn start back up where it stopped after the call. It works much better than a fm transmitter. You don't have to search for a radio station that will work and sound quality is less static. I had some problems with getting the stereo to work at first but Crutchfield just sent me a replacement for free and it has worked great ever since. Very afforable for what you get.

      Fantastic Deal!

Written By John, Fantastic Product! on Thursday, January 08, 2009
      Installed in a 1997 Subaru 2.5GT
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just received my Pioneer DEH-P4000UB yesterday. Its safe to say that it was a quick install into my 1997 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT.

The total amount of time that it took was about 30 minutes, due to the crimping. Overall, pretty easy. I am not an electronics wiz at all. It was easy because all you have to do is match up the colors and crimp them together.

The sound quality is fantastic. It was a huge upgrade from my factory head unit. The multi-control knob really isn't that bad. Before I bought this, I read plenty of reviews saying that the multi-control knob is tough to get used to. Its really not. I figured it out in about 5 minutes.

The manual that comes with CD Player is a little confusing. At first I couldnt figure out how to get my iPod to start working (its a 2nd generation nano), so I called the crutchfield tech support line and I had it working within 30 seconds. All I had to do was reset the iPod by holding the top part of the circle and the center button at the same time.

What really caught my eye about this product was the expandability. It is ready for HD hookup, Satellite hookup, it has an AUX hookup, USB/iPod hookup, and (3) 4 volt Preamp hookups for subs or whatever.

Anyway, this product is a fantastic deal for the money. Honestly, I really do love it, and anyone who is looking for great sound quality and not looking to spend all their cash, this is the way to do it. I plan on buying Pioneer again in the future.

      Simple Radio for Excellent Sound

Written By Cobra_AH1Z, Amarillo, TX on Tuesday, January 06, 2009

I received this for my Silverado. The simplicity of the product is outstanding. Even better, the IPod list appears through the stereo instead of having the track through the IPod itself. The remote makes it so easy to use. The sound adjustments provide the best mixes in sound. I would suggest this product to anyone.

      Beware Ford Owners!

Written By Chad, Richmond, Mi on Saturday, January 03, 2009
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, let me say that this head unit far exceeded my expectations. Loading the USB drive through the music/ITunes folder on my PC was painless and
quick. I can't say the same for removing my Ford 6-disc factory stereo in my '02 Ranger. The DIN keys blew right past the release tabs and caused me to go "gamma ray" as I was literally bending the keys in an attempt to pull out the old unit. When I called Crutchfield for advice, I was told,"Ford stereos are a little... different in their stereo mounts. Just keep shaking it from side to side while pulling and it should come out." Oh, I pulled and shook from side to side, and the part surrounding the stereo the contains the CC vents & 12v outlets started to pull off! In the end, I went with it and took out the two screws out above the CC knobs and pulled the whole part off to get at the old unit from behind and depressed the release tabs by hand to get the old unit out. (which was MUCH EASIER than using those
irritating DIN keys). Overall, I'm very happy with my new unit. It is simple to use and the mounting bracket looks good in the dash. But, installation
would've gone much faster and a bit smoother if I had gotten better info!

This is the my best buy i have ever made for one of my vehicles. The Pioneer DEH-P4000UB is amazing. the manual is a little hard to read but, you only need it to figure out how to do a couple of things like Presets, it is easy to figure things out on your own. This is my First Pioneer product and will be buying from pioneer again.
