Home theater systems: Transform your TV experience

Enjoy powerful sound that puts you right in the middle of your favorite movies, TV shows, and video games. These pre-matched systems come with speakers and a subwoofer plus the amplification to drive them. Some models feature low-profile consoles and ultra-compact speakers for minimal visual clutter. Others come with full-sized component receivers and larger speakers for better audio performance and hookup flexibility. Many pre-matched home theater systems come with a built-in DVD or Blu-ray player.

Our take on the Onkyo HT-SR800

by Tara W.

Pair Onkyo's HT-SR800 with any DVD player or high-definition disc player, and start enjoying dynamic, wraparound home theater sound. This system includes a receiver, seven speakers, and a powered subwoofer. The receiver's advanced audio circuitry reduces signal noise in the early stages of processing, before the signal gets amplified and passed on to the speakers. The result is clean, precise sound with all your entertainment sources. Plus, the receiver's high-current amplifier re-creates intense sound effects with the punch and power they're meant to have.

Lots of options for music fans
You can add an XM Mini-Tuner package and XM Satellite Radio subscription to tune in a huge selection of music, sports, and talk radio programming. Or access SIRIUS Satellite Radio with an optional SIRIUS Connect™ home tuner kit. (You'll also need a SIRIUS subscription.) Play digital music stored on your iPod® by adding Onkyo's optional DS-A2 iPod dock. It lets you view track information on your TV screen and control the iPod using this system's remote.

Advanced auto setup tailors sound to your room
For the most accurate home theater sound possible, the receiver includes Audyssey 2EQ, a sophisticated speaker calibration system from Audyssey Laboratories. Using the included microphone, the receiver analyzes sound from two different listening positions, then automatically adjusts level, equalization, and delay settings for each of your speakers. You'll get clear, precise, natural sound that's optimized for your room.

    Receiver Features

WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks.

192kHz/24-Bit Digital-to-Analog Converters: The HT-R550 receiver is equipped with 192kHz/24-bit DACs for all channels to decode and play high-resolution recordings.

Satellite Ready: By connecting an optional antenna and tuner, you can easily add XM or Sirius Satellite Radio to the receiver. Adding XM Satellite Radio requires the XM antenna (item number 220CNP2H) and XM Mini-Tuner (item number 220CNP2000) designed for XM ready home receivers. A 50' extension cable is available (item number 220CNPEX50) if the antenna's cable (approximately 20') is not long enough. Adding Sirius Satellite Radio requires either the Sirius Connect Home Tuner (item number 607SCH1), which includes the tuner and an indoor/outdoor antenna, or the Sirius Connect Home Tuner Pro Kit (item number 607SCH1P1), which includes the tuner and an outdoor antenna. Both satellite providers offer a wide range of music, news, sports, comedy, talk, and entertainment channels to choose from--all in digital quality. During satellite playback, you can display the channel name, channel number and preset number, category, artist name, or song title on the front panel.

Note: A subscription is required in order to receive either satellite radio service.

iPod Compatible: The DS-A2 Remote Interactive Dock for iPod (item number 580DSA2) provide an interface between an iPod digital media player and Onkyo receiver. Once the iPod is docked you can control basic functions such as volume control, play, stop, and skip via the Onkyo system's RI-compatible wireless remote control. The dock also charges the battery in the iPod, and allows you to view digital photos and video on an Onkyo home theater system.

Adjustable Crossover: This receiver has a built-in crossover for the subwoofer output. This setting is also used for any other speakers set to Small. The frequencies that you can choose from are 40, 50, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, and 200 Hz.

Double Bass: With the double bass feature you can boost the bass output by feeding the low frequency signals from the left and right channels (when front speakers set to large) to both the front speakers and to the subwoofer.

Assignable Digital Inputs: The HT-R550 has 4 assignable digital inputs (2 optical, 2 coaxial) allowing you to tell the unit which input source is connected to which digital input jack.

Multi-channel Input: Although this unit features built-in Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, and DTS processing, it also has a 7.1 multi-channel analog input for use with external multi-channel decoders (DVD-Audio, SACD, etc).

Audio Sync: Occasionally the audio and video signals are not properly synchronized, typically when using a progressive scanning DVD player. You can correct this by delaying the audio; options are 0 (no delay) to 100 milliseconds, in 20 millisecond steps.

B Speaker Outputs: The B speaker outputs can be used to power speakers in a different room, creating a second zone. When the B speakers are turned on, the amplifier for the surround back speakers is used to power them, so the connected surround back speakers are disabled and the main room becomes a 5.1 channel system. The B speakers can only play sources connected using analog cables.

Speaker Levels: Along with adjustments for the front, center, surround and surround back speaker levels, the B channel (2nd front) outputs can be adjusted from -12dB to +12dB relative to the A channels. This essentially gives you independent volume control for the A and B speaker outputs.

Listening Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of listening modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your audio and video software. The listening modes include:

    • Surround Modes:
      • Dolby Digital
      • Dolby Digital EX
      • Dolby Pro Logic IIx (Movie, Music, and Game)
      • Dolby Pro Logic II (Movie, Music, and Game)
      • Dolby Digital + Pro Logic IIx (Movie and Music)
      • Dolby Digital + Neo:6
      • DTS
      • DTS-ES (Discrete and Matrix)
      • DTS 96/24
      • DTS Neo:6 (Cinema and Music)
      • DTS + Dolby EX
      • DTS + Pro Logic IIx (Movie and Music)
      • DTS + Neo:6
      • Neural Surround
      • Theater-Dimensional
    • DSP Modes:
      • Mono Movie
      • Orchestra
      • Unplugged
      • Studio-Mix
      • TV Logic
      • All Channel Stereo
      • Full Mono

Direct Mode: This mode delivers pure sound with minimal sound quality adjustment and filtration. The sound recorded for the right and left front channels is output to the right and left front speakers and subwoofer only, not to the center or surround speakers.

CinemaFILTER Circuitry: This circuitry provides a subtle high-frequency roll off for proper playback of soundtracks in the home. It provides the means to easily remove excess treble response from soundtracks that were originally equalized to sound best in a large theater. This function works with all the Dolby Digital and DTS modes, plus the Dolby Pro Logic II and IIx movie modes.

Late Night: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings making it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. The settings are: Off, Low, and High.

Note: This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the amount of effect will vary based on the individual soundtrack.

Auto Setup: The receiver is equipped with an Auto Setup and Room Equalization function, to achieve the best sound field for your specific room. The Audyssey 2EQ/HTIB function is designed to optimize the sound quality across three listening positions in the room. The included microphone is used to measure test tones at each listening position, the measured data is then analyzed using a program to improve acoustic characteristics in the listening area (correct the room's acoustic shortcomings). The main position is given more weight in the calculations. The Audyssey function makes adjustments based on the following measurements automatically: Speaker Configuration (5.1, 7.1, etc), Delay (to account for the variations in distance from speakers to listening position), Channel Level, Crossover Frequency, and Room EQ.

Equalizer: The EQ function offers three options:

    • Off: flat response
    • Audyssey: adjusts the frequency response of all speakers to correct the effects of room acoustics, based on measurements taken using the included microphone
    • Manual: the five band equalizer can be adjusted independently for each set of speakers (front, center, surround, and surround back), the EQ bands are centered at 80, 250, 800, 2500, and 8000 Hz, they are adjustable from -6 to +6 dB (sub EQ bands are centered at 40, 80, and 160 Hz)

Dolby Pro Logic II & IIx Music Modes: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II or IIx Music format, there are three further enhancements you can enjoy (available with 2 channel sources only):

    • Panorama: broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu
    • Dimension: allows you to move the sound field forward or backward
    • Center Width: allows you to adjust the width of the center channel

Center Image: In the DTS Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).

Neural Surround: Neural Surround has been adopted by XM Satellite Radio for digital radio broadcasts of XM HD Surround recordings and live events in surround sound. Neural Surround employs psychoacoustic frequency domain processing which allows delivery of a more detailed sound stage with superior channel separation and localization of audio elements. Playback is selectable between 5.1 and 7.1 channels.

Sleep Timer: From the remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after a preset amount of time. The sleep timer can be adjusted from 10 minutes to 90 minutes in 10-minute increments.

Direct Change: When playback is started on a component connected via the Remote Interactive (RI) jack, the receiver automatically selects that component as the input source.

Input Display: The name displayed for most inputs is fixed (DVD, VCR/DVR, etc), but the Tape and CBL/SAT input displays can be changed. Tape can be changed to MD, CDR, or Dock and CBL/SAT can be changed to Dock. These settings also effect the Remote Interactive (wired remote) codes output to other connected components.

Note: Only one of the input labels can be changed to Dock.

Display Dimmer: The display illumination has three brightness level settings.

Wireless Remote: The RC-681M remote is programmed to operate this unit and other Onkyo equipment. The remote also includes the codes to control other brand DVD players and recorders, CD players and recorders, MD recorders, TVs, VCRs, Satellite and cable boxes, PVRs (Personal Video Recorders), TV/DVD combos, TV/VCR combos, Satellite/PVR combos, and cable box/PVR combos.

Speaker Outputs: The speaker terminals for the front (A), center, surround, and surround back speakers are binding posts. A plastic collar prevents using spade terminals, but bare wire, pin connecters, banana plugs and dual banana plugs will work. The B channel outputs are spring terminals.

    Speaker System Features

Powered Subwoofer: The 230 watt powered subwoofer features a 10" down-firing woofer in a bass reflex enclosure. The subwoofer has a single RCA line input for use with the supplied cable. The subwoofer automatically turns on when an input signal is received, and returns to standby mode when no signal has been input for about 5 minutes. An LED indicator on the front panel glows red when in standby mode and green when in operation. The volume control is on the rear panel. The sub's frequency response is 25 Hz to 150 Hz.

Front Speakers: The front speakers each use a 1" balanced dome tweeter and two 5" cone woofers in a bass reflex enclosure. Each speaker has a set of spring clip terminals for use with the supplied speaker wire. Each enclosure has a removable black cloth grille. A keyhole slot on the back of each enclosure allows you to wall-mount the speakers without any wall brackets. The speakers' frequency response is 60 Hz to 50 kHz, sensitivity is 87.5 dB (1 watt/1 meter), the crossover point is 4.5 kHz, and they are magnetically shielded.

Center Channel Speaker: The matching center channel speaker features the same 1" balanced dome tweeter and two 5" cone woofers in a bass reflex enclosure. It has a set of spring clip terminals for use with the supplied speaker wire. The enclosure has a removable black cloth grille. Two keyhole slots on the back of each enclosure allows you to wall-mount the speakers (horizontally) without any wall brackets. The speaker's sensitivity is 87.5 dB (1 watt/1 meter), its' crossover point is 4.5 kHz, and it is magnetically shielded.

Surround and Surround Back Speakers: The surround and surround back speakers each use a 3-1/4" full range cone driver in a sealed enclosure. Each speaker has a set of spring clip terminals for use with the supplied speaker wire. Each enclosure is covered by a non-removable, black cloth grille. A keyhole slot on the back of each enclosure allows you to wall-mount the speakers without any wall brackets. The speakers' frequency response is 160 Hz to 20 kHz and sensitivity is 82 dB (1 watt/1 meter).

Speaker Wiring: Color-coded speaker wire is provided for all 7 satellite speakers. Standard speaker wire can be substituted if longer lengths or thicker gauge speaker wire is desired.

    Inputs and Outputs Notes

XM: This proprietary terminal allows you to connect an optional XM Mini Tuner and Mini Tuner Home Dock.

HDMI Inputs/Output: This unit has 2 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI monitor output. The HDMI inputs are assignable to different input sources. The monitor output sends the HDMI signal to your display just as it's received (pass-through), but the receiver cannot decode the audio signal via the HDMI input so a separate optical digital, coaxial digital, or analog stereo cable must also be used. The HDMI version is 1.3 and will pass a 1080p signal.

Component Video Inputs/Output: This unit has 3 component video inputs and 1 component video monitor output. The component video inputs/output band width is 5 Hz to 50 MHz, so they will accommodate an HDTV signal.

Multi-Channel Input: A 7.1-channel analog input accommodates present and future multi-channel formats.

Headphone Output: The receiver has a standard 1/4" headphone jack on the front panel. The speaker outputs are muted when headphones are plugged into the Phones jack. When you connect a pair of headphones, the listening mode automatically switches to Stereo, unless it's already set to Mono, Stereo, or Direct. When you disconnect the headphones, the previous listening mode is selected. The headphone volume for the left and right channels is adjustable (relative to one another) from -12 dB to +12 dB.

RI Remote Control Jack: The 1/8" RI (Remote Interactive) remote control jack on the receiver allows you to connect the receiver to other RI-remote capable Onkyo components.

    Onkyo HT-SR800

Written By Pete, Iowa City, IA on Monday, June 16, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This surround system is awesome!!! The remote control included is a universal remote so it will control all my components which is a nice plus! Huge number of connection options on the back of the receiver. Should meet or exceed my needs for years to come. I bought it primarily for DVD and TV viewing, but it is also excellent for listening to music from literally any sound source, and has a number of listening modes to accomodate whatever source you are listening to. It cost a little more than I had planned to spend, but bought it anyway after reading reviews for it. They didn't lie. It is probably one of the best systems (if not the best system) available at it's price point. 110 watts per channel x 7. almost 300 watt subwoofer. You can definitely feel the sound. Just be careful! The neighbors may not like it quite so well as you will (when watching an action movie and the bombs start exploding)! :))

Great value, great sound, lots of inputs

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had a 2.1 PC system for the last 8 years that I bought for $100 bucks. I was trying to hook up lots of stuff to it and got away with it for awhile. I had my HDTV, radio and computer hooked up to it. I thought it sounded pretty good and was happy with it until it started giving me trouble. I read tons of reviews on this (HT-SR800) system and it seemed most people were happy with it. One thing someone mentioned which was good advice was to buy some decent speaker wire. The wire that comes with the system seems to be meant only to try everything out and maybe set things up temporarily until you get the real wire (Makes sense to me). Now I know how bad my old speakers really were. This system is awesome. I really appreciate how much better this sounds than what I had. There are so many ways to connect that I had no problem hooking up all my stuff. It was easy to setup and run the automatic speaker calibration with the included microphone and I noticed the difference after calibration. If there was anything I wish I could change it might be the size of the speakers. It would be nice if they were a little smaller. I have a feeling though that if they were they might not give me as smooth a sound from low to high frequencies as this system delivers. All in all I'm happy with it!

This is my first home theater system. Hooked up to a ps3 and a wii and a samsung 50 dlp. I have had it now for a few months and love it. My only complaint is that I cant seem to get my remote to control my dish network hd dvr box. But, for the price and the customer help that I recieved I give this system 5 stars easy. Sound is awesome, Call of duty 4 sounds like a real war zone, it thumps my house. Upconversion would be nice, but oh well.

Best HTIB you can buy for the $$ (IMHO)

Written By durantz, Roeland Park, KS on Tuesday, May 13, 2008

First, I have to complement Onkyo on the remote. For a non-universal remote, it is easy to program,
straight-forward in how it operates and logically laid out. Much better than the remote that came with my Yamaha receiver. This receiver does everything that you need for a good home theater system (outside of carrying HDMI sound through) and does it very
well. Love that it has 7.1 analog for Blu-ray, not to
mention DVD audio and SACD. Both XM and Sirius hook-ups - nice to have options :o)

I would comment on the speakers, but ended up selling them 'cause my wife thought they were
too big, although the guy I sold them to thinks they are great. Nice that it is offered in silver.

Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the DTS and Dolby indicators on the display are VERY small and the speaker connections on the back are kind of crowded. I would definitely recommend banana plugs.
    I am VERY happy with
    this receiver. Onkyo
    has made a new fan!

    Great for the price!

Great sound, except I believe I received a bad front speaker, it gets distorted at high volume. Lot's of inputs and outputs. Could use another optical. I have it hook up with an 47in. HDTV, a surge protector, and the Onkyo kicks butt. Remember it also has HDMI inputs so that is a plus. The woofer at 230 watts is more than enough. Enjoy

    Great value for the money

Written By William, Seattle, WA on Monday, February 11, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Is this the best 7.1 in the world? I'm going to guess not. But the best value? Well, my $0.02 are that's it's probably close. Obviously, I haven't bought a dozen systems and compared them all. But I did my research and did buy this one and it's pretty phenomenal.

I'm just using it for movies. If you're a gamer, the bass probably isn't enough, I don't know. But the range of sounds that come out of those big front/centers is amazing. And the bass is good, very strong depending on the movie. What I've realized is that often, where I would want more bass, it's just because the movie sound technician didn't put it in there, not because the 7.1 can't do it. When the movie is kicking the bass, the system will thump your walls if you so choose.

And when there's someone whispering behind you (relative to the movie), you'll turn your head the first couple of times. Really, there is stuff in movies that you haven't been hearing until you get one of these systems. Even in dialogue-centric movies, the surround system is still doing a lot of work. Plus just the fact that the center/fronts produce very clear midrange sound, so dialogue comes through no matter what.

The only thing I wasn't quite prepared for is how big the front/centers are. These are not bookshelves. Look closely at the pic, their face is bigger than the receivers! And yes, I bought different mounts for those than for the satellites. They're 9lb each, so beware.

    Enjoy!

    almost there

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Hey, they almost got it here. It sounds great to me. My only complaints are some of the downgrades they do to the HTIB receiver over the other model receivers.
I did not expect that and am somewhat dissapointed. No video conversion on this unit. Some of it is my fault, some the manufacturers. My biggest complaint is the front and center channel speaker grilles, they rattle if pushed firmly on. You have to very gently install them or they rattle. Not good, I'd return it, except I can't replace what I have without spending additional money.
Setup is very easy, sound is wonderful. There are buttons on the remote to quickly change individual channel levels to suit your taste. All in all it realy is a good setup for the money.

    Onkyo HT-SR800

Written By mallard, Chattanooga, TN on Wednesday, January 30, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield sent out the home theater audio system to the house is a very short time. Less than one week. Was shipped UPS and had to sign for this delivery. This is a good thing. Box was in OK condition so be sure to check before you give your signature to release.

Before I placed my order with Crutchfield staff it was great to discuss what components I have and what will be used with the Onkyo system. They knew what cables were necessary to make all of the connections. This was a great plus and took about 20 minutes on the phone.

I could have purchase this unit from others cheaper, but the Crutchfield advice and service was great. I had talked to two other sellers on this system. They did not speak good English and one of the other companies placed me on hold twice so I just hung up on him after the second hold time out.

I'm in my 50's and do not keep up with the new high tech equipment anymore. With today's fast changing world we need someone willing to talk us through about the equipment and how it connects to the different components(tv, dvd player, receivers, cable box). The Crutchfield Tech support staff covers all of this with excellent results.

OK, I place the Onkyo receiver and speakers in service. Sound was great on the 7 speaker system.
One big problem. The receiver did not have an output from the HDMI signal plug to my TV.
I called Crutchfield Tech staff. Again they were great trying to trouble shoot this problem. We tested everything and still no signal. They told me I could call Onkyo Tech staff and I did.

Onkyo Tech staff did the same testing as Crutchfield to try and make it work. I called Crutchfield and they were great sending out a replacement and told me if I got the old one back to them in less than 14 days my credit card would not be charged. They arranged for a will call ticket to return the old receiver with UPS. Crutchfield has a 30 day policy and all of this took place in less than 30 days. The new receiver worked.

The 7 speaker system provides great quality sound in my large den with the large screen Plasma TV. I compared the Panasonic 1200W, 5.1 and a Demen unit before I purchased this Onkyo. The Onkyo does not have a DVD player, but I did not need one. The Onkyo maybe a little high compared to other units, but I'm satisfied at this time with the purchase.

All of this was one big hassle that I could have lived without, but these things happen.

Again, I cannot thank the Crutchfield Tech staff enough for their support at all times of the day.

    Great except for FIOS

Written By DJK987, Columbia, MD on Monday, January 21, 2008

The sound on this thing is really quite nice. Easy to set up, too. However, two things you should know if you are using this with the FIOS HD DVR.... 1) There is a basic incompatibility between the FIOS HDMI output and the Onkyo receiver. The HDMI pass-through does not work. I have spoken to Verizon and Onkyo (Motorola says "talk to Verizon"), both point fingers at the other and say it is not their issue.... 2) The Onkyo receiver cannot be controlled from the FIOS remote control. A couple of the FIOS codes listed for Onkyo receivers will turn off the Onkyo reciever, but none of the codes will turn it on. So you will not get the wonderful convenience from the FIOS remote of having it set up to turn on and off your STB, TV and Receiver with one button as it is designed to be capable of. I have not considered this to be such difficulty that I have returned the unit, but I thought you should know what you are getting into.

    Hi-Fi at reasonable price!

Written By Joe, West Monroe, LA on Thursday, January 17, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this system to replace my old dvd HTIB. It had tiny speakers, small sub, low wattage output and the range of sound was sub-par. After much searching at similar systems available at other retailers (online and in person) I decided on this system.

    First the bad:

As others have mentioned - the faces cant be removed off of the 4 surround speakers; but it I also didnt like the fact that all 4 of them are only using one 3 1/4 driver!

The mounting for these speakers is kind of shoddy, they dont work with most universal on wall or ceiling mounts... but this can be overcome by a bit of ingenuity.

My only other complaint is the length of the speaker wire. For the rear channels you will be best off getting a spool of 16G quality wire.

    The goods :)

The power, features and range of sound on this system are terrific! Aside from the above complaints, this system is well worth over $1k.

After I replaced the back surround speakers with some sony ssb-1000s (I'm only running 5.1) I am supremely satisfied with this purchase. I am hearing sounds in my favorite music and movies that I have never heard. The entire range of sound is marvelous, and the sub holds the bottom end well... plus you can crank it up and get some gangster bass if you want.

The remote is actually quite well designed too. It now controls my TV and Dish Network w/DVR as well.

This system is quite future proof in the way of providing a plethora of AV inputs and 2 extra "B" speaker outputs that you can run to another room.

I plan on picking up a PS3 soon for games, blu-ray, internet access and the ability to stream all my media off my PC.

I cannot stress what an amazing system this is - especially for the price.

    Good Value

Written By Michael, Gilbert,AZ on Thursday, January 17, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this particular system for a number of reasons. First, I have had good experiences with Onkyo products in the past. Second, I did not want to spend $1000+ on a home theater system. And third, it was the highest rated home theater in a box. Overall, I would say that I am pretty pleased. Setup was relatively easy. The speaker wire was kind of poor (and too short for my room setup), so I bought replacement. Sound quality is pretty good. You probably can get a better quality system for way more money, but for me it wasn't worth it. I would purchase again.

Good system for the money. Only disadvantages are that the back surround speaker wires are not long enough for my place and the face plate cannot be removed for the 2 side and 2 back speakers. Other than those you will be happy. So many features I likely will not really need but good to have available.

Great Home Theater in a Box VALUE!

Written By Roy, Houston, TX on Monday, November 26, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used to snub my nose at Home Theater in a Box (HTiB) systems. A few years ago, HTiB systems seemed clearly "inferior" to full-feature component systems. I currently own two full-feature Onkyo receivers which are excellent. HTiBs have improved dramatically in recent years. After some shopping around, I selected/ordered this HTiB for my friend/neighbor and set it up.

This unit has amazing features, sound and quality for the price. Set-up was fairly easy and the Audyssey set-up microphone routine did a great job. We tweaked the settings a little for the finicky tastes of the owner. Sound field settings allow for different sound effects for movies and music. Users should play with it to choose their favorite sound modes.

Speakers seem much more "substantial" than usual HTiB satellites without being too large. Powered subwoofer is more than adequate. The receiver is powerful and has enough inputs for expansion of system components -- the Onkyo HT-SR800 system feels and looks much more "high end" than others in this price range.

This system should provide years of enjoyment. I HIGHLY recommend the Onkyo HT-SR800 system as an excellent HTiB choice for under $500. Crutchfield's great service, free shipping and Technical Support add to the value of this purchase.

    Excellent Sound & Value

Written By Chris, Portage, IN on Saturday, November 24, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Onkyo HT-SR800 may be the biggest and best value in Home Theater right now. I had bought and returned 4 or 5 other systems (from other retailers, which will remain nameless!), some of which were $200.00 more, but sounded $200.00 less expensive than the Onkyo. None of those systems sounded better than my '04 Pioneer HTIB (a modest system but it was one of Pioneer's last low-end models with a fairly nice sounding powered sub). I finally had a revelation- check out Crutchfield, and check out Onkyo. I read all the positve reviews (and also have friends who have recommended Onkyo in the past). This system has such an awesome low-to-high range- I haven't heard any other systems with included speakers that sound so balanced. If you need more bass from the sub, tweak the subwoofer to its fullest and leave the main channels at or near default. I have absolutely no complaints about the system (I'm not concerned about the HDMI issue, I only run audio through the receiver). The receiver is built like a rock and blows my old system away in terms of sound quality and holding its sonic clarity when turned up to near its limit. I proceeded to buy a 6 disc Onkyo DVD changer and am just as pleased with it as I am the HT-SR800. I too upgraded the speaker wire and noticed a marked improvement in power and clarity. The ONLY problem I had with the Onkyo receiver (and DVD unit) was their width- they currently sit atop our entertainment armoire because they are both too wide for the shelves intended to hold such gear. The tuner section sounds great, my CDs through the digital coax sound incredible, and the entire package is an incredible bargain- comparable Onkyo receivers can be found for over $100.00 MORE than this entire system! I recommend anyone who wants higher end sound and build quality for a not so high end price to pick up this system. And Crutchfield will get it to you in a flash, with a smile. Not only do I recommend buying this system- I recommend buying it from Crutchfield.

    WOW! I LIKE IT

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this system to replace an $100.00 surround system and Stereo unit. I was first shopping just for a receiver and was gonna build the speakers later. I came across this unit. What I liked about it was the fact that it had NO DVD PLAYER! Yeah most find this a negative but what happens when the receiver dies or the DVD. Your dead in the water, need to replace both. The Receiver is a little complicated but nothing too unmanageable. The speakers sound fantastic when hooked up to coaxial or optical digital sound with a DVD. The subwoofer I havent played with yet but right now might need an improvement. I have an odd T shaped room my system is in. I just cant beleive how crisp the music and movies sound on this thing. I was looking at Onkyo receivers first in this price range until i found this. For about the same price range I get the 7.1 and a sub!!! Who can beat it! If your looking in the 300-500 price here you go! Excellent! One thing I liked is the speaker switching for multiple rooms so I could do away with 2 receivers for 1 good one! Im impressed with ONKYO and CRUTCHFIELD for a great product, customer service, and always super fast shipping!!!!

    Great Bang for the Buck

Written By Tim, Columbus, OH on Monday, October 22, 2007

I've had this system for a little over a month. After two weeks of breaking in and tweaking to my likes and a little over two weeks of audio bliss, I was and am positively thrilled with my purchase. I've always been skeptical of HTIB's, but this Onkyo has changed my mind forever. And the bass will leave you shaken if you do not rein the power in a wee bit. Unless you go top-shelf with your component selections, I can't imagine putting together any system that could perform any better. No more bulky, overly expensive component systems for me. This is definitely the way to go.
