Sony

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Our take on the Sony XM-2200GTX

by Tim Sprinkle

Sony knows that a steady power source is the foundation of a great sound system. That's why they design their Xplod amps with pulse power supplies for consistent output to maximize power distribution to your speakers.

The XM-2200GTX 2-channel amplifier puts this reliability to good use with 200 watts RMS power per channel (or 500 watts RMS bridged), plenty of power for a subwoofer or two. The variable bass boost (0-10dB at 40 Hz) kicks up the lows when it's needed, and you can switch on the variable low-pass filter to keep the low frequencies tight and crisp.

Extra-sturdy, gold-plated terminals give you reliable signal and power connections, and the speaker-level inputs allow for easy integration with any system, even a factory radio.

Highlights:

  • 2-channel car amplifier
  • 200 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms (250 watts RMS x 2 at 2 ohms)
  • 500 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms (4-ohm stable in bridged mode)
  • low-pass crossover (50-300 Hz, 12 dB/octave)
  • variable bass boost (0-10 dB at 40 Hz)

    Features

Protection Circuitry: The Sony XM-2200GTX amplifier has 3-way protection circuitry which protects the amplifier in the following cases:

    • Thermal: shuts off the amp when the operating temperature is too high
    • Short circuit: shuts off the amp when the speaker outputs are short-circuited
    • DC Offset: shuts off the amp when the speaker wires or ground lead is not securely connected, generating direct current

Power/Protector LED: The amplifier has an LED on the top panel which glows green when operating normally, and changes to red when the protection circuit is activated.

Low-pass Filter: This amp is equipped with a low-pass filter, continuously variable from 50-300Hz, with a slope of 12dB/octave. You can turn off the filter for full-range operation.

Protection Cap: The XM-2200GTX comes with a plastic protection cap that fits over the power/ground/remote terminals to help prevent accidental short circuiting.

    Inputs and Outputs Notes

Power/Ground Terminals: The power and ground screw terminals are 0.54" wide to easily accommodate 4-gauge wire.

Preamp Output: This amplifier includes a stereo preamp output, which allows you to send an unfiltered signal to another amplifier. You must be using the line level input, not the speaker-level input, in order to use the preamp output jacks.

Speaker-level Input Harness: The amp comes with a 4-channel speaker-level input harness with a color-coded 8-pin Molex plug on one end. This allows you to more easily connect this amplifier to a factory deck or a receiver without preamp outputs.

Bridging the Amplifier: When bridging the amplifier, the line input jack and speaker output terminals labeled "BTL" are used. The input signal is plugged into the left channel input and the output signal comes from the left positive and right negative speaker terminals.

    Specifications

RMS Power Output (supply voltage at 14.4 Volts):

    • 200 watts x 2 into 4 ohms (20Hz to 20kHz, 0.1% THD)
    • 250 watts x 2 into 2 ohms (20Hz to 20kHz, 0.15% THD)
    • 500 watts bridged into 4 ohms (20 Hz to 20kHz, 0.15% THD)

    Maximum Power Output:

    • 400 watts x 2 into 4 ohms
    • 600 watts x 2 into 2 ohms
    • 1200 watts bridged into 4 ohms

Current Drain: at rated output: 48A (at 4 ohms)

    Wiring Recommendation

Amplifier Wiring: This amplifier uses two 40-amp fuses, so its total fuse rating is 80 amps. The Streetwires 4-gauge amp wiring kits (item #s 211PS4B, 211PS4R, 211PS4BI, 211PS4RI) include an 80-amp fuse, and will accommodate the amp's fuse rating. Other 4-gauge amp wiring kits carried by Crutchfield include a 60-amp fuse. If you are using a 4-gauge amp wiring kit with a fuse rated less than 80 amps, the fuse should be replaced with an 80-amp AGU fuse (item # 211AGU80).

I have the sister amp to this one. Sony XM-SD22X. it has all the same specs just has a different outer appearance.
Im currently pushing 2 Sony 8" Xplod subs each 250 RMS 900 peak. This amp pushes these babies hard, but i definately need to upgrade to atleast 1 12" sub or maybe 2. Great AMP

Great Set, Low $$ Quality Sound

Written By odellk, Apopka, FL on Monday, February 06, 2006
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this set to go in my 2001 Chevy Cavalier with a Sony CDX-M630 head unit I already had, new Pioneer TS-A4670R 4"x6"/4x6m 3-way Speakers up front and Pioneer TS-A1681R 6-1/2"/6-3/4" 4-Way Speakers in the rear. The amp came with 2 Sony XS-L1237 12" Subs.

I had a bit of difficulty with the amp overheating at first, but diagnosed it as a wiring problem because I used my old box that came with a single channel amp. As soon as I removed the metal bridges between the output connections on the box, the amp was fine and hasnt shut down since.

The output of these subs and amp is incredible, especially when using the loudness feature on the head unit, full bass output on the sound adjustment and on the amp, and less than half sub output from the sub adjustment on the head unit. I couldnt get the sub level above 1/2 and stand to be in the car when listening to DMXs X Gon Give It To Ya. You can rattle the neighbors windows or just have a nice tight bass line to enhance your sound.

I noticed with my setup, using the loudness feature allows the sub to drown out the Pioneers, which are normally loud and clear. This easily compensated for by turning the loudness off, since they don't have an amp.

Bottom Line: I am a Sony fan (the Sony Xplod speakers wouldnt fit in my car or I would have opted for a pure Sony system) and these have exceeded my expectations as the head unit has. The amp and subs put out more than enough power to enhance my music or rattle my brain cells depending on my mood. The amp hasnt overheated since I got it wired correctly. For my budget(I am driving an 01 Cavalier), these are the best around.

    Rocks!

Written By Chris, Springfield, VA on Friday, February 03, 2006
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp has exceeded my expectations. Like many here I bought the amp/sub combo, and purchased the $69.00 Q-Logic hatch box to mount the 12" P5's. Total cost was 249.98. I have 3 kids, so cost HAD to be low.
What a fantastic deal! I can't believe the quality of the products for the money. I used an 8 guage wiring kit and used the standard 2-channel setup at 4ohms. Totally rocks. This thing kicks out rock and metal like crazy, and I tested a Snoop-Dog CD as well, with less success, but I think it was my car rattling, not the subs distorting. It's so loud that you can't stand it before it gets a little muddy. I was worried that it wouldn,t sound right with a hatch box in the trunk of my Passat, but those fears were totaly dispelled the instant I turned them on. The amp has not overheated or shut off once, so maybe some folks here got an older model or the overheating problem was fixed. I have never been so fully satisfied with a purchase.

I purchased this amp with the 2 sony xplod 12" subs and it was the best package I purchased. The amp has plenty of power. The subs hit harder than my buddy 12" JL. But to cut it short i would recomend this amp to anybody. Good Solid Amp.

    Perfect

Written By Anonymous, Alcester-Hudson, SD on Tuesday, December 27, 2005

I recently got this amp along with 2 12" Sony P5's...and the package is absolutley perfect!! The bass is so much that i can hardly stand to be in the car. I've heard that these amp's have overheating problems but i did a 3 and half hour drive with them fairly loud and never had a overheating problem.

    Sony XM-2200GTX

This amp is not at all any good i would not recomend it to anyone. I hooked this amp up to one power acoustic 12 and it wouldn't push it with enough power. It sounded horrible. Also the amp overheated and went into protect mode just about every time i used it. Another problem with this amp is that it is not 2ohm stable.

    Good amp

i bought this amp used for 100 and it hits hard. Powers my 2 10" xplod p5 in sealed box. I maxed out the level and bass boost, and no overheating or problems so far, and i had it for 5 months. Only thing i don't lik is that its not stable @ 2ohms. And it doesnt come with that much features. Overall this amps is the best bang for buck.

I got this amp about a year ago and i have had nothing but problems with it. I have it pushing 2 sony xplod 12" subs in my 95 Chevy Lumina. It is very powerful for the price but it overheats all the time. It pounds the heck out of my subs for about a half an hour but then it shuts down into protect mode and it takes it at least an hour for it to cool off. I only recomend this amp it you are a beginer or if you are looking for something inexpensive.

    Disposable Amp

Written By Ryan, Long Island, NY on Monday, September 26, 2005

I used this amp for 2 years, at never maxed it out, yet it always overheated. Now 2 years later, it's dead. It's cheap, but just go in knowing it's not as sturdy as some slightly more expensive amps. The Infinity Beta Digital I had before this was mounted in worse location (upside down) and never overheated and never died.

    This amp is great

Written By Michael, Bethlehem, PA on Sunday, August 28, 2005

I bought this amp as part of a package deal that came with 2 12" subs. Let me tell you this amp has plenty of power. Sometimes the bass is so much my ears start to hurt. I listen to Metal with a lot of double bass drum and bass guitar and it is great to hear the bass in my music. I've had this setup for a good while now. I think I purchased around october last year (2004) and this amp has never overheated or given me any problems. I did however have another Sony amp that was a diffrent model that gave me problems. I returned that one and bought this package. That was a good move for me. This amp is great for the price.

    Best Bang for your Buck

Written By Warren, LI, NY on Wednesday, August 03, 2005

I have had this amp for more than a year now and it still hits as hard as it did the first time i powered it up. Has never overheated once, I have it pushing 2 12 inch sony subs (XS-L121P5). Sitting through traffic in a snow storm I had it blasting the whole way home, and after 3 1/2 hrs it was still hitting hard. One thing I would recomend is get a capacitor, gives it a little more juice a little quicker. And if you are worried that it will not be loud enough, I have had friends ask me what do I have in my car (I didn't think it was that loud, considering they were 100 yards away now I know it is loud). Bottom line if you are looking for a decent amp without willing to give up the $$$$, this is the way to go.

    Over Heats

Written By Nate, Boston, MA on Tuesday, July 26, 2005

I origianlly had this amp pushing a pair of kicker comp VR's in a ported encolsure, this was temporary until I bought the Kicker KX600.1, The Sony would over heat within 20 min and shut down. Now the Sony is pushing a pair of Pioneer Rev series 6x9's, after about a hour of playing hard the amp once again will over heat and shut down. Good amp only if your power requirements are modest.

    Sony Xplod Amp 1200

Written By Mr. P, Las Vegas, NV on Tuesday, March 22, 2005

This thing hits hard. I've got it hooked to 2 12" Sony Explode XS-L121P5's in a ported enclosure in the trunk of my 96 Buick Regal GS. The first CD I played was Aerosmith's "Honkin on Bobo" and I was impressed. Got down real low and the bass was VERY tight. Compared to Sony subs of the past, this thing kicks. And with the price, I would recommend this over quite a few of the higher priced brands out there. My only complaint is about the dials for the Gain, Low Pass, and Filter. They are flush mounted (or recessed) on the amp and a bit difficult to get to once the amp is mounted, unless you have an angled flat tip screw driver. Might want to take that into consideration when mounting but, other than that, this amp is truely one of the best.
