Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Sony CDX-GT700HD

by Ken Nail

The Sony CDX-GT700HD CD receiver combines the ability to play all your favorite media with a built-in HD Radio™ tuner that'll take you to the cutting edge of radio. Plus, you can connect and control your iPod® without having to buy an optional adapter, and you'll even find convenient front panel USB and auxiliary inputs for your portables.

Built-in HD Radio tuner
Tune to an FM or AM station that's broadcasting digital HD Radio signals and you'll enjoy better sound than you've ever experienced on the airwaves, all without static or distortion. You'll also enjoy extra features like additional programming broadcast on secondary or tertiary channels — choices that aren't available to regular radio listeners.

Once you connect your iPod to the CDX-GT700HD, you'll appreciate the convenience of iTunes® tagging. When you hear a song you like on HD Radio, just press a button on the receiver to "tag" it. Song information is saved to your iPod — simply connect your iPod to your computer and go to the Apple iTunes store to buy the song whenever you want.

Find your music files quickly
The CDX-GT700HD boasts an impressive set of controls for navigating through your iPod's music or any MP3, WMA, and AAC files you've burned to disc. Sony's Quick-BrowZer feature lets you search for songs by genre, artist, or album — you just rotate the knob to find the song you want, then push in on the knob to select. The Jump control leaps through your playlist in 10% increments, great if you're dealing with a bunch of files. Switch to passenger control and your passengers can select tunes with the iPod's controls while you concentrate on your driving.

Shape the sound
Sony's DM+ Advanced circuitry restores the details lost when music files are compressed, so you enjoy the best possible sound from your files. The EQ3 Stage 2 equalizer includes eight preset tone curves and a 3-band equalizer for adjusting the lows, mids, and highs. The Dynamic Soundstage Organizer adds presence and life to your music by raising the soundstage up to ear level — the three levels of adjustment let you pick the setting that works best for your car.

Ready for system building
You'll find three sets of preamp outputs for adding external amplifiers or a powered subwoofer. Built-in high- and low-pass filters ensure you send your speakers only the frequencies they're best equipped to handle.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

      Display Features

Flip-Down/Detachable Face: The CDX-GT700HD features a manual fold-down face which provides a larger display and greater protection for the player's CD-slot and your CD discs. In addition, the unit features a detachable face for theft prevention. Two face-fixing screws are supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.  No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

Caution Alarm: If you turn the ignition switch to the Off position without detaching the front-panel, the caution alarm will sound for a few seconds. The alarm will only sound if the built-in amplifier is used.

2-Line LCD Display: The 2-line, black background and white backlit LCD display makes it easy to read song and station information.

Motion Display: This feature shows moving patterns and a spectrum analyzer on the display when turned on.

Auto Scroll: This feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button once will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Dimmer: To change the brightness of the display you can set the CDX-GT700HD to one of three dimmer modes - Dimmer Auto (dims the display automatically when you turn your vehicle's lights on), Dimmer Off (deactivates the dimmer), and Dimmer On (display always dim). The wiring harness includes an orange/white lead that should be connected to the vehicle's parking light circuit in order for the dimmer feature to operate.

Contrast: You can adjust the contrast level of the head unit's display for better day- and night-time viewing. The contrast level is adjustable in 7 steps.

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

Button Illumination: Illuminated keys help you find and select control functions in low light. You can change the heaudnit's button illumination to blue or green to better match your vehicle's interior dash lighting.

      HD Radio

Built-in HD Radio Tuner: The integrated HD Radio tuner receives compatible AM and FM radio stations signals in digital format for improved sound quality while providing metadata information and iTunes Music Tagging so that you can find the songs you like later.

HD Radio Technology: HD Radio technology, where available, offers higher quality sound than conventional analog broadcasts and receives text data. HD Radio provides FM broadcasts that are equal to CD sound quality and AM broadcasts that are as good as analog FM stereo broadcasts.  Right now there are about 2,000 radio stations broadcasting using digital HD Radio technology in the U.S. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit the HD Radio website (HDRadio.com).

Metadata Information: HD Radio provides a variety of data; including station name, song title, artist name, album name, etc.

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

Analog Broadcasts: In addition to HD AM/FM stations, the CDX-GT700HD can also receive conventional analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Preset Tuning: The radio features 6 memory bands to store and receive analog and digital AM/FM stations. You can store up to 6 presets each in FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1 and AM2 (total: 18 FM/12 AM). Preset tuning can be done manually or automatically.

      • Best Tuning Memory (BTM): This feature selects stations with the best signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency. You can select from FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.
      • Manual Tuning: You can manually tune and find your favorite radio stations one by one for FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.

iTunes Tagging: The iTunes Tag button on this unit allows you to tag songs (up to 50) you like that are broadcast by HD Radio stations. Information about these tagged songs is stored by the receiver and transferred to your connected iPod. When you connect your iPod to your computer, iTunes automatically presents songs in a new "Tagged" playlist so you can preview, purchase, and download them.  This function can be operated with the following iPod/iPhone models - iPod nano (3rd/4th/5th/6th gen), iPod classic, iPod touch, and iPhone (2G/3G/3GS/4/4S/5).

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional  satellite radio receiver to this head unit:

      • SIRIUS Satellite Radio: To receive SIRIUS Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional SCC1 SiriusConnect Vehicle Tuner and the optional SNYSC1 Sony interface module (package item number 700SIRSONY, sold separately).
      • XM Satellite: To receive XM Satellite Radio connect the optional CNP2000UCA XM Tuner and the Sony CNP-SON1 adapter cable (package item number 700XMSON2, sold separately).

Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.

      Disc Playback

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: The Sony CDX-GT700HD allows you to playback CD-Rs or CD-RWs loaded with MP3, WMA, or AAC songs (up to 320 kbps) recorded in ISO 9660 level 1 or 2, Joliet/Romeo, or Multi-Session. The CDX-GT700HD can support up 150 folders, and a combined 300 folders and files on a disc. The head unit will also display song information for MP3, WMA, and AAC music files (Joliet: up to 32 characters, Romeo: up to 64 characters).

Note: Copyright protected ACC-LC files cannot be played back.

Compressed Audio Display Information: The CD receiver's display can display the following information: Track number/Elapsed playing time, Disc/Artist Name, Album/Group Number, Album/Group Name, Track Name, Text Information and Clock.

Quick-BrowZer: The unit's Quick-BrowZer feature allow you to search for a track on a CD, iPod, or from your connected USB Mass Storage Device easily by category (Genre, Artist, Album, or Playlist).

Jump Mode: Jump Mode gets you closer to the song you want by allowing you to fast forward through a music category in 10 percent increments.

Zappin: With the Zappin feature, you can play music (files or folders) in 6, 9, or 30-second clips until you find the song you are looking for on your CD or connected USB device.

Off Eject: The CD disc can be ejected with the power off. The CD player will automatically reinsert the disc if it's ejected but not removed for 20 seconds or more.

Mounting Angle: For proper CD playback, this unit must be mounted between 0 (horizontal) and 45 degrees.

      Aux/USB/iPod Connectivity

Front Panel Auxiliary Input: A front panel stereo 3.5mm mini-jack is provided to allow the connection of a portable audio source. Just connect your portable digital music player to this unit, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system. The volume level of the auxiliary input is adjustable from -8 to +18 dB to compensate for any difference between the unit and your portable device. The aux input can be deactivated in the menu so it does not appear as an available source.

USB Input: The receiver's front-panel Type-A USB input can be used for plugging in a (MSC) Mass Storage Class or MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) type USB device. The head unit can play music files stored on the USB device in MP3, WMA, or AAC formats (up to 320 kbps). When playing a USB device, the display can indicate track/album/artist/genre number, track/artist/album/genre name, elapsed playing time, text information, or clock. The head unit can recognize up to 128 folders with 500 tracks each when connected to a USB Mass Storage Device. A sliding cover protects the USB input when it is not in use.

Note: This unit cannot recognize USB devices via a USB hub.

USB 1-Wire iPod Control: USB 1-Wire for iPod lets you directly connect, charge, and control select iPods via the USB jack on the front of the unit, as well as view metadata like song title and artist on the front display. The GT700HD has a front panel USB port which allows you to connect your iPod via a single cable (iPod dock connector-to-USB--cable, not included with the head unit). If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. The head unit will allow audio playback, control, and charging of your connected iPod. The head unit allows you to search your iPod's music by category (album, song, genre, podcast, playlist, artist) and offers Repeat and Random playback functions. When the head unit is placed in the Passenger Control mode, you can control the iPod directly using the clickwheel or touchscreen on the iPod. Audio Section

True Fidelity Sound Construction: The Sony Xplod CDX-GT700HD FM/AM compact disc player features a newly developed sound processor for less distortion, an S-MOSFET IC for smooth signal transmission, and a large-sized capacitor for deep bass sound.

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Sony CDX-GT700HD utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

CEA2006 Compliant Amplifier: The power specifications for the Sony Xplod CDX-GT700HD are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the CDX-GT700HD are as follows:

      • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Peak Power Output: 52 watts x 4-channels (208 total watts)

EQ3 Stage 2: The Sony Xplod CDX-GT700HD features an EQ3 Stage 2 equalizer with 7 preset equalizer curves for various types of music. You can choose from Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, Custom, or Off. The Off mode provides a flat response. The Custom mode allows you to manually adjust the Low (60 Hz), Mid (1 kHz), and High (10 kHz) frequencies from +/-10dB.

Digital Music Plus Advanced: The Sony CDX-GT700HD features Digital Music Plus Advanced which is an enhancer technology used to reproduce detail and high frequency sound from compressed audio.

Dynamic Soundstage Organizer (DSO): Sony's Dynamic Soundstage Organizer uses proprietary circuitry to induce subtle phase shifts, simulating a sound source that is placed higher than the actual speakers in the vehicle. For example, when the DSO function is used in a vehicle equipped with speakers mounted low in the front doors, it creates virtual speakers in the dash to raise the soundstage. This unit offers three levels of DSO, each with a larger and higher soundstage. You can store the DSO setting for each source.

Loudness: This feature reinforces bass and treble for clear sound at low volume levels.

Three Pairs Of 2V Preamp Outputs: The CDX-GT700HD contains three pairs of 2-volt RCA preamp outputs - front and rear pairs plus another pair on a 10" pigtail for subwoofer operation. The subwoofer output is non-fading with a low pass filter and a selectable cut-off frequency of 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 140Hz, 160Hz, or Off. You can adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments. In addition, you can select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.

High-Pass Filter: The front and rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 140Hz, 160Hz, or Off.

Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

      Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The head unit comes supplied with an IR wireless remote control (RM-X151) for easy operation. The included wireless remote allows you to control the basic functions of the Sony Xplod head unit while keeping your eyes on the road.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a replacement cd player for my '91 F250 chore truck. Let me say for the price, performance, and installation ease, It can't be beat. I'm in the process of changing my mobile music to a hand held device so the external 2.0 usb port is a great convenience for on the go tunes. Thanks again to all of the staff from purchase to installation help for being patient, funny, knowledgeable, and above all professional.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have used Sony equipment for 30 years or more and have had generally positive experiences with their gear. This radio builds on the car audio head units I have had over the years.

This is my first foray into HD radio and I find that the features and sound quality from this Sony deck is as good as some of the more expensive gear I have bought from Sony before. Since I am fairly well used to the control placement and function on Sony car radios, this one is as easy to use as my others. I really like the option of being able to plug a flash drive directly into the front of the unit and have the deck itself handle the mp3 files. The front mounted aux input is also a welcomed upgrade.

Installation was as easy as any other stereo head unit, especially with the Crutchfield installation parts and instructions. The Sony installation documentation is well written and easy to understand. Wiring drawings are concise.
      Pros:
Front mounted USB port. Front mounted AUX input. HD radio tuner built in and ready to play.
      Cons:
They can lose that infernal beeping that tells you that the faceplate has been left on after turning the key off. It has been on all the Sony head units I've bought in the last 6 or 8 years and while it may be a security feature, it's an annoyance I can do without on my next Sony head unit.

      So Far, So Awesome

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just wanted a radio that was digital, had a usb port and had a Sirius port. This radio was one of the least expensive options. The install was simple and quick. Crutchfield instructions and install kit are always top notch. The radio sounds great and is working like a charm. I gave it 5 stars. For the price, this is an awesome radio - I don't really find the cons all that big of a deal.
      Pros:
Awesome having a usb port in the front of the unit. Allows for decent control of my iPhone and iPod. Also lets us listen to books on tape from a usb dongle. Allows for deep file directory options when naming usb dongle files. Did that make sense?
      Cons:
Newer radios have a toggle on the volume nob that one uses to access menu options. I seem to always press the volume nob when I reach over to turn the volume up or down. Not really a con for this model as opposed to others, just a pia. I agree with other that the menus are a little un-intuitive. Just takes some getting used to...

Nice head unit with plenty of features and an easy installation. Good power range, full of features.
      Pros:
Great value for the price Loaded with features Straight-forward installation Integration of satellite control Plenty of sound adjustments
      Cons:
Ipod control integration is somewhat un-intuitive (a little wonky) Menu controls are little sensitive with main volume control Buttons are small for anyone with larger size hands Backlight "blue" is impossible to use in the night time Ignition switch beep cannot be turned off Display "swoosh" cannot be turned off on power up.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my 96 Geo Tracker. This is my first HD stereo, and so far I am impressed. The sound is great, and the unit is easy to use. I love the fact that it has a front USB, and aux. input jack. I also believe that Sony receivers are superior to others; they always seem to pick up stations at greater distances. Crutchfield supplied all the necessary small items to install this head unit for free! Installation was extremely easy with the supplied instuctions.
      Pros:
Sound quality Ease of opperation Front USB Front aux. input
      Cons:
Does not support Microsoft Zune via USB. However, the Zune can be charged with the USB port while using the front input jack to use.

I love this unit, far better than the factory one in my truck. I am not a kid, so coolness is not big with me. Functionality and performance are all that matter. My only complaint is the same with all aftermarket radios - they have so many features that it is hard for my old eyes to read the text printed on the unit. So there is a learning curve for me before my familiarity can take over.
      Pros:
Huge number of features, love being able to access so much music on a USB device.
      Cons:
Almost none - only as I stated above that the small text printed on the controls is difficult for my older eyes to read.

You need fingers like a small child to work this thing. Sony tried to cram too much into a small format making it a true pain. Also, Sony has for the last few models installed the annoying power off chime that can not be turned off.
      Pros:
      sound
      Cons:
menu functions, small buttons, buton placement

Theres no question. Sony makes the best head units. This thing pumps.
      Pros:
Being able to control an ipod or flash drive right through the HU. Looks awesome!!
      Cons:
The green lighting is disappointing. It is not nearly as vibrant as the blue lighting. The green is less harsh at night though. I dislike that every time you revisit the "browZer" you must go back and find the playlist you were in before. it does not just go back into the playlist you are playing music from.

excellent value and great sound. bass response is very good, made my mirrors shake on certain passages, don't think i need a subwoofer the bass is completely satisfactory. usb port is great, hd radio is great, cd runs well, took four hours to install. instructions were excellent, initially the unit ran but the speakers did not play. there was one vehicle wire that was not covered by i called tech support and the agent knew the answer where to put it and get the speakers going. very satisfied.
      Pros:
      see above
      Cons:
yes, as someone said, the screen will wash out in glare. keep your eyes on the road.

      Great Sounds!!!

This is my second one of these. The first one went into my Honda Civic some time ago and this one into my wife's Kia Sportage LX. Crutchfield made it super easy for me to install it. They gave me for free, with the purchase, a wiring harness adapter, dashboard trim and an install master sheet. I was kind of concerned about hidden screws etc... but the master install sheet showed me where everything was located in simple easy to follow instructions. The wiring harness adapter was right on and the dashboard trim was a perfect fit. From start to finish I was done in about 30 minutes. This head unit does everything except feed the dog and wash your car. One piece of info the Crutchfield web site left out is that this unit has a BUS input which means it can be hooked up to a Sony source selector and/or a Sony 10 Disc CD Changer in addition to about a million other things. You can't beat the price for what it does. I love the "Zappin" feature but it takes some getting used to. My daughter can play music from her cell phone through the AUX input and it has a built-in Ipod controller. The head unit gives me the choice of the driver or passenger controlling the music from the iPod after it is hooked up. (iPod Classic 6th Gen.) Mainly I use the USB port. I use a 4GB mini flash drive which sits almost flush with face. It sticks up about 1/4 in. from the face and since it is black it fits right in. It stores about 300 songs from my computer. The HD Radio is also a plus.
      Cons:
Only 2 cons but not a deal breaker. When driving in bright sunlight the face gets washed out and is real hard to see. I tried adjusting the contrast but to no avail. Secondly, You only have a choice of 2 colors for illumination which shows around the large knob and some of the controls on the far left. BLUE is way to bright and distracting at night and does not dim when you turn on your headlights. The only part of the face that dims is the display. The green color is much better.

      Great Features (owned 2 years)

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First let me state that I have had this unit in my vehicle for over 2 years. It was a breeze to install courtesy of the installation guide and pieces provided by Crutchfield (they've never let me down!). Prior to purchasing this receiver I had only purchased Pioneer, although I had tried and tested numerous other offerings by different brands both in this car and in previous cars as well. That being said, I originally purchased this receiver because it had 1) USB port, 2) HD Radio, 3) Buttons instead of a knob to adio stations, etc, 4) sub input, and 5) value. I have been very satisfied with my purchase, but there are some 'cons' to consider as well.

PROS : - The USB port is extremely useful, not only to use an MP3 player through, but it can also charge your phone in a pinch! Being able to control the mp3 player and select songs, etc directly from the receiver is quite convenient. If you don't have a USB cord handy, you can use the AUX-in jack which is great, though obviously this method requires you to use the attached source to navigate your music. - I've never had any problems with the CD player and it does very well in relatively bumpy terrain, having only skipped a few times over the years. - As expected, the buttons are extremely convenient when wanting to switch between radio stations. Much easier to navigate than a knob which many other receivers have started using (see Cons too)
      Pros:
ADDITIONAL PROS : (ran out of space) - It's remarkably easy to change the level of subwoofer bass via the sub level input. - HD radio, when in range, adds more radio stations if available in your area - I purchased this a few years ago, and for the price I'd say this is still a great value! - Color schemes are cool, though I stick with green because it's easier on the eyes during night driving (also matches better). I'm 28, not 60, and blue is wayy too bright @
      Cons:
CONS : - The most heavily used radio buttons have become hard to press / unresponsive. I expected this to happen eventually, but NOT so soon. - HD radio can be extremely annoying at times. While some stations sound better in HD, others sound worse due to diminishing quality to squeeze more stations on the same frequency. Worse, HD will simply cut-out instead of becoming more 'static-y' like normal radio. I wish I could disable it sometimes when I'm on the fringe of the stations' range.

Very good unit for the money. Improved sound quality vs my old factory radio, especially on the HD radio stations. Love the USB input for ipod, which also charges when connected. Crutchfield tech support was top notch, making installation pretty easy.
      Pros:
Decent sound quality, remote control easy to operate, looks cool.
      Cons:
Some controls on the radio are a little confusing to operate, but this is probably just a matter of getting used to.

Only reservation is small buttons lead to some navagation issues, once dialed in it ROCKS!.
      Pros:
Sound is as good as it gets, radio really pull's in weak stations. Plays every type of media I could ever want to use and in a manner one would be very hard preesed to out do at twice the price.
      Cons:
None any, well maybe the smallish buttons and longish delay in start up with radio or media, worth the wait though once the sound kicks in.
