Our take on the Alpine iDA-X300

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Alpine's iDA-X300 digital media receiver is all about USB and iPod, so leave your CDs at home. Use the USB input for listening to music on your USB players and storage devices, or use the included KCE-422i cable for full control over your iPod or USB-capable music players. From either source, you get fast, easy music selection and the best possible sound quality. The LCD display uses two lines of text to deliver song and system information.

The centrally located jog dial mimics the functions of an iPod's click wheel. Turn the jog dial a little to scroll line-by-line in Search mode, or jump through your iPod playlists more quickly with Alpine's Percentage Search feature. You'll appreciate the convenient "Back" button that lets you backtrack through the menus, instead of starting over from the top.

This versatile stereo works with all of Alpine's peripheral gear, including satellite radio, auxiliary input adapter, add-on USB input, CD changer, or HD Radio™ tuner. Add Alpine's optional KCA-100BT Bluetooth® interface, and you can press the dedicated phone button on the faceplate to mute the music, answer an incoming call, or place a call. You can also stream music from a music phone or Bluetooth capable music player.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Features

Digital Media Receiver: The Alpine iDA-X300 is an in-dash digital media receiver with an AM/FM tuner, a rear-panel USB input, and a 2-line 2.2" LCD screen, but no CD slot. You can connect and control an iPod (iPod Full Speed cable included), a USB "thumb" drive, and a CD changer, and the unit is HD Radio ready, Bluetooth ready, and Satellite radio ready.

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association. All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: The iDA-X300 can play MP3, WMA, and AAC files stored on a USB Memory device (also known as a "thumb drive") or in a compatible CD changer. MP3 files can be recorded with bit rates of 32-320 kbps, WMA files can have 16-320 kbps bit rates, and AAC files can have 8-576 kbps.

File/Folder Name Search: During MP3/WMA/AAC playback, you can activate the search mode to locate a specific folder or file by name.

Sound Quality: The iDA-X300 uses clean digital connections and a 24-bit DAC (digital-to-analog converter).

Bass and Treble Controls: The head unit features independent Bass and Treble controls that allow you to adjust each setting +/-14 dB in 2 dB steps. The center frequencies are adjustable (60, 80, 100, and 200 Hz for bass and 10, 12.5, 15, and 17.5 kHz for treble) and the bass bandwidth is adjustable (from narrow to wide in four steps).

Switchable Pre-out: The preamp output can be switched from "Front" to a non-fading subwoofer preamp output with a variable level of 0 to +15. When the subwoofer is activated in the Setup menu, the pre-out is switched at the same time. When the subwoofer is deactivated, the pre-out is switched back to a front channel output.

HPF: The high pass filter (HPF) removes the lower bass from the front and rear speaker outputs. HPF options are 80 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, and off.

Optional Auxiliary Input: With the optional KCA-121B Ai-NET/RCA interface cable or KCA-410C Versatile Link Terminal, you can input audio from an auxiliary source unit, such as a TV, VCR or portable unit.

Center Dial: The iDA-X300 features a large dial near the center of the faceplate. You can turn the dial in either direction to navigate through the function menus and the music tracks as they appear on the display. A press of the Enter in the center of the dial confirms the highlighted menu item.

Calendar/Clock Display: Using the View button, you can select the calendar/clock display on the front panel LCD. The clock can be set to 12 or 24 hour display, and the calendar can be displayed as M/D/Y (month/day/year), D/M/Y, or Y/M/D. When the calendar/clock display is given display priority, the time and date are displayed even after the unit is turned off. The calendar/clock display can be turned on or off with the View button when the unit is powered off.

Display Dimmer: The LCD screen and the button illumination will dim when the vehicle's headlights are turned on. You can also turn the dimmer off in the menu if you prefer. Note: The orange illumination wire in the supplied wiring harness must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit in order for the dimming feature to work.

Mounting Angle: If mounted at an angle, it should not exceed 35° (above horizontal).

Optional Wireless Remotes: The iDA-X300 does not include a remote control. It is compatible with two optional wireless remotes; RUE-4190 (item number 500RUE4190) and RUE-4202 (item number 500RUE4202).

External Device Controls

You can quickly and easily search through all of the music contained on your iPod through Playlist, Artist, or Album searches. You can view Artist, Album, Song Information and Song Number right on the head unit's display. The iDA-X300 is compatible with the following iPod models:

  • Full Speed Cable Connection:
    • 4th generation iPod
    • iPod mini
    • 5th generation iPod
    • 1st generation iPod nano

    • Song: All songs in the currently selected mode are played back in random order.

  • Track number and elapsed time
  • Song title and artist
  • Song title and Album title
  • Date and Time

iPod Searches: Using the center volume/enter knob you can easily and quickly search for and locate songs on your iPod. Search by playlist, artist, album, song, composer, genre, podcast, and audiobook. You can also skip through all your music files by percentage, in 10% steps.

USB Memory Mode: You can play MP3, WMA, or AAC files stored on a USB memory device. During playback, the display shows song, album, and artist title, and elapsed time. If no tag information exists, the display shows the track number and elapsed time. The iDA-X300 has a bank function that automatically divides the songs on a USB device into groups of 1,000, enabling quick skipping over many songs at once. The maximum recognizable number of banks is 10 (10,000 songs). You can repeat the current track or current folder, and play the tracks in the current folder or all of the tracks in the current memory bank in random order.

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio receiver to this receiver:

  • XM Satellite Radio: To receive XM Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional CNP2000UC XM Mini Tuner (220CNP20UC) and the Alpine CNP-ALP1 adapter cable (package item number 700XMALP1).

    • SIRIUS Plug and Play: The KCA-SC100 (item number 500KCASC10) allows you to integrate many SIRIUS plug and play receivers. Compatible tuners include the Sportster, Starmate, Stratus, and Stiletto. You can control the satellite receiver from your head unit and use the Quick Search feature to browse all artists and songs currently playing on all channels. The SIRIUS text information also appears on the head unit display.
  • Auxiliary Input: A portable satellite radio receiver, such as the Delphi SkyFi3 or SIRIUS Sportster, can be connected to the head unit via an auxiliary input (KCA-121B auxiliary input adapter needed, item number 500KCA121B).

Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.

Bluetooth Interface Ready: With the optional KCE-350BT Bluetooth adapter (item number 500KCE350B), you can make and receive calls hands-free on your Bluetooth-capable cellular phone, and communicate through a microphone (included with the Bluetooth interface) and your vehicle's speakers. In addition to the wireless connection and hands-free operation, you also get caller ID, phone book access, and on-screen call information.

HD Radio Ready: The iDA-X300 can receive HD Radio signals, including multicast broadcasts, when the TUA-T550HD HD Radio Tuner Module (item number 500TUAT550) is connected via the Ai-NET connector. The digital seek function allows you to search for only HD Radio stations if you prefer.

CD Changer Controls: The iDA-X300 is compatible with Alpine Ai-NET CD changers, including MP3-compatible changers such as the CHA-S634 (item number 500CHAS634). During playback, the LCD will display the disc and track numbers and elapsed time, plus, if CD Text exists, the Disc Name and Track Name. For MP3 discs, the Song, Album, and Artist titles and elapsed time will be displayed. During CD changer playback, you can repeat the current song, current folder (if MP3 disc), or current disc. You can also play tracks in the current disc, current folder (if MP3 disc) or all the tracks in the current CD magazine in random order. During MP3 disc playback, you can activate the search mode to locate a specific folder or file by name.

External Processor Controls: This unit can control an Alpine multi-channel sound processor, such as the PXA-H701 (item number 500PXAH701).

Great sound for a modest budget

Written By Petras, Chicago, IL on Sunday, November 23, 2008

This head unit exceeded my expectations.

It was purchased to replace the stock stereo in my girlfriend's 2000 Honda Civic, which had no tape or CD player.

I paired this unit with a set of Blaupunkt 6.5" speakers up front and some Alpine 6X9s in the back.

The install was smooth, maybe a little tedious thanks to the numerous plastic pieces in the Honda, but the Crutchfield installation guide was spot on. The included harnesses were used and of course worked perfectly, which was very convenient.

Installed, the unit looks very nice. The Ipod hooks up fast and the interface is very fast as well. It's not too complicated, you can switch songs and playlists while driving once you get to know the buttons. It played loud and clear and is a great little system for a modest budget.

All in all, if you are looking for a cheaper head unit for Ipod playability, look no further. I recommend the Alpine IDA X300 fully.

Another great Alpine product

Written By TJ, Latrobe PA on Tuesday, October 07, 2008

The iDA-X300 is a great piece of equipment. My wife wanted to play her iPod in her car, and although we ordered an AUX input adapter, it just didn't seem to be cost-effective, since you have to buy cables and a cradle for the iPod. I started to look into the possibility of replacing the entire head unit with one that had this capability built into the unit, so you could hide the iPod away.

CD's are unnecessary since you can carry your entire music library with you, so I chose the Alpine. While we were at it, we decided to add Sirius.

Great - now she can listen to almost anything she wants on her commutes! I'm jealous, since my car lacks satellite radio (for now).

The only thing I am not thrilled with is the red backlighting - the blue of the upgrade IDA-X200 is significantly more legible.

As usual, Crutchfield gave great directions, and fielded my questions with grace. Thanks again!

It's an Alpine, but...

Written By CheezyDee, Ridgewood N.Y. on Friday, October 03, 2008

USB access and search is kind of flakey, needs DEDICATED PRESET BUTTONS,.

The dash adapter for my '04 Jeep Liberty has the wrong radius on the corners so it fits kinda tight, I'm sure it will squeak in a few weeks.

OMG, only red lighting? With my old CDM-7857 you had a choice, green or amber.

iPod Good, Radio Presets Bad

Written By Chilcoot, Eagle River, AK on Monday, September 22, 2008

It works great for iPods, but the radio presets are awful. In order to change from one radio preset to another, the user must:
* press "preset";
* dial the knob to one of the six preset numbers; and
* press the knob.

Three distinct tasks to change radio presets? Ridiculous.

Form kicks function's butt on this one.

Alpine iDA-X300

Written By Mike, Cleveland, OH on Tuesday, September 16, 2008

Ipod Support: I purchased this unit mainly because it says it supports my 4g 20GB Ipod. Unfortunately I have the same issue many have where the unit will not pause itself when I turn off the ignition. Oddly enough, the ipod WILL pause when I switch the source or turn off the head unit manually using the power button. All of that said, I like the unit enough to keep it regardless of the pause issue.

USB Support: When I first tried to get my 2GB flash drive working I was very disappointed. I had the device nearly full of music and it seemed like it was never finishing it's "banking" process. This head unit must index the files on the USB device EVERY time it is turned on, which is a giant pain. However, index times can be GREATLY increased (Mine was taking 10-15 minutes and is now about 1 minute for 2GB) by using a program such as Mp3tag (which is free) to remove all other MP3 tags and set ONLY ID3v2.3 UTF-16 or ID3v2.3 ISO-8859-1. On the plus side, when you switch the head unit off and back on it does remember what MP3 and location you were playing when you left and resumes playing while it is indexing the rest of the device.

Usability: I read a lot of complaints about using the device to scroll through the music. I'll admit that the display is a bit small, and the reaction time of the wheel is not as good as using an ipod, but it isn't as bad as many say.

Overall I actually really like this unit FOR THE PRICE. Spend more, get more.

Not good for Podcasts

Written By ewan, Tracy, CA on Wednesday, August 06, 2008

I mostly listen to podcasts in the car and here is what is doesn't do (pity I found this out after installation)
1) If you select a specific podcast to listen to, once finished the unit auto replays it. If you select a podcast subscription, it plays all of the podcasts in this subscription and then auto-repeats, if you select all podcasts it plays them all then auto repeats. (This is a std function for all Alpine units according to Alpine).

2) Unlike music, you cannot skip to the end of a podcast (like you can on your ipod), you either have to stop the podcast, press pause or hold the quick skip function button down and skip through or go back to the menu and select a new podcast

3) The remote you can buy (lower cost version) does not contain any ipod functionality for podcasts and only covers the basics for music.

4) The screen is difficult to read as it only displays part of the title to whatever you are listening to. If you have many podcasts with the same title start, no way to see which one you want to listen to until the screen data starts scrolling and by then it's too late, the unit goes back to current display.

Summary, for music it's ok, for podcasts it's terrible, hence the low score. For the price, you get what you pay for I guess.

Alpine iDA-X300

Written By Philip, Deptford,NJ on Monday, July 28, 2008

This product is decent, there are a few flaws, for example there is a horrible glare on the screen when driving in sunny conditions, navigation also isn't the fastest, and the buttons are very small (important buttons like play, pause, next track etc). But the sound quality was spectacular, the unit also works for iphones with the KCE-422i without going on airplane mode and the headunit looks very sharp.

Not like the Alpines I remember

Written By Brian, New Boston, NH on Tuesday, June 17, 2008

Well, I hadn't
bought anything from
Alpine in years but
never owned anything
else so I was
expecting good
things.

It sounds great and
looks good. That is
where the good ends.
Something told me
that the knob in the
middle looked wrong.
It is. Did anybody
at Alpine actually
put this unit in a
car and live with it
for a while? The
driver cannot see
the display when
using this
multifunction
behemoth knob. The
knob should be on
the extreme left
side just like all
of Alpine's non IDA
units. It is just a
bad design. There
is plenty of room
for radio preset
buttons but they
chose to make you
use the knob for
those too. Not
good. The display
is not very good
when searching.

Push any button on
the faceplate and
the whole thing
moves far too much.
It doesn't fit very
tight although I
haven't had any
issues. Don't care
for the red
lighting. It comes
with a high speed
cable which is good
but it doesn't come
with a USB cable.
Try finding a USB
extension cable that
is under 10 ft.
long. Who wants all
that extra cable
stuffed in the dash?

Overall I wish I had
bought another unit.

Failure

Written By Jason, Connecticut on Wednesday, May 28, 2008

I bought this unit for it's iPod control obviously. I have an Alpine IVA-W200 with the Full Speed cable and it works great. I figured a deck designed strictly for the iPod with Apple's help would be perfect for what I needed. Wrong. The two line display is awful to figure out, unless you have things named quite short. The rotary control knob is basically useless. How hard is it to duplicate the iPod control system? This does not mimic the iPod at all, and is hardly intuitive. Well fine, most times I just throw on a playlist and shuffle. Even FINDING my playlists is not easy, and very hard while driving.

Also, my 4th generation iPod does NOT stop when you turn off the car, or switch to another source. It does in my other Alpine radio. Here however, the iPod keeps cranking through your tunes. You have to remember to push pause ( which is not down on the large center knob as it should be, but a separate button ) before turning the car off.

I also purchased a Sirius Sportster as an add on. I planned on using, and bought the add on aux. input cable. However, the iPod cable plugs in the same place so forget that plan. Now I need to hard wire through the radio antenna. Having and auxiliary input capability listed as a feature is utterly pointless when this is an iPod deck and you need to use that input. I can, for an additional $150, purchase a different Alpine add on that will allow for 2 aux inputs.

Overall I'd say this is a very disappointing attempt on Alpine's part.

Very nice stereo

Written By Chris, ND on Wednesday, May 07, 2008

I bought this deck for my girls 98 Altima, it works perfect and the install was the easiest. The deck itself is very easy to use it navigates through your Ipod very easily and sound great. I really dont have anything negative to say about the X300. And buying through crutchfield you get everything you need (dash kit, wire harness etc.) very nice item.
