Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the JVC KD-R330

by Zak Billmeier

If you're looking to upgrade the sound in your car without shelling out serious cash, take a good look at this striking JVC. The KD-R330 CD receiver is perfect for a teenager's first car, for a family's second car, or any car with a factory radio that's on its last legs. And you just might have enough left over for a pair of speakers, too.

A serious improvement in sound
First of all, you'll get a lot more power — 20 blazing watts of continuous juice. By comparison, your factory stereo probably struggles to crank out 5-10 watts. More power doesn't just mean you can play louder, though, it elevates definition and accuracy at all frequencies, giving you greater realism in your music.

JVC also packs the KD-R330 with a superior CD deck that'll make your discs sound their best, a sophisticated equalizer for dialing in the perfect sound in your car, and two auxiliary inputs for plugging in your gear. Built-in frequency filters let you tailor the JVC's output so your speakers (and subs, if you got 'em) only play what they were designed to handle.

Expansion possibilities
You'll find two auxiliary inputs for adding sound sources — use the rear input for a permanent source like a satellite radio, and the front source for plugging your iPod® or other portable. Add JVC's Bluetooth® adapter (not included), and you'll be able to take hands-free while your cell phone stays in your pocket or purse. If you're planning to add an amp or a powered sub, you'll find a set of preamp outputs, switchable to subwoofer mode so you can adjust the bass independent of your faders.

      Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-R330 can play MP3 (8-320 kbps)/WMA files (32-192 kbps) that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo or Windows long file. Each disc can have a maximum of 8 folder hierarchies, 255 folders, and no more than a total of 512 files and/or folders on each disc. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3 or WMA files.

Track/Folder List: The Track/Folder List displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a loaded CD, so you can easily access your music. The Track/Folder List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc.

Random/Repeat Modes: The JVC KD-R330 offers the following Repeat and Random playback modes for your audio CDs.

      • Repeat: Track Repeat (plays the current track repeatedly), Folder Repeat (plays all tracks of the current folder repeatedly), Off (cancels repeat function)
      • Random: Folder Random (plays all tracks of the current folder, then the tracks of the next folder in random), All Random (plays all tracks of the current disc at random), Off (cancels random function)

Disc Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Disc Protection: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust. The source will change to CD, and the disc will begin playback, even if you have another source selected at the time.

Mounting: For proper disc playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

      Aux Connection

Dual Auxiliary Inputs: A front-panel & rear-panel stereo minijack are provided to allow the connection of portable audio sources. Simply connect your portable digital music player to either the unit's front or rear auxiliary input, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system.

      Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-R330 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KD-R330 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KD-R330 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KD-R330 are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-R330 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Pro EQ: The KD-R330 is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

      Pro EQ
      Frequency Level Q
      Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
      Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
      Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 khz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) Fixed

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can turn this feature on or off.

Switchable Preamp Output: The KD-R330 is equipped with one pair of 2.5V preamp outputs. You can set the Rear/SW preamp outputs for connecting rear speakers (through an external amplifier) or for connecting a subwoofer (through an external amplifier). When set for rear speakers, the rear outputs operate with the unit's fader control. When set for subwoofer, the outputs are non-fading.

Built-in Crossovers: The JVC KD-R330 features a built-in high-pass filter for the unit's front & rear speakers and a low-pass filter for the unit's subwoofer output.

      • Low-Pass Filter: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can set the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter at 55Hz, 85Hz, or 120Hz.
      • High-Pass Filter: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can also activate a high-pass filter (fixed at low-pass filter frequency) for the unit's front & rear channels (speaker- or preamp-level), so low frequency signals are cut off from your system's front & rear speakers.

Subwoofer Level: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can adjust the head unit's subwoofer level between 0 and 8.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

      Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The JVC KD-R330 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: You can store a total of 18 FM stations presets and 6 AM station presets. The radio allows you to set your AM/FM stations manually or automatically.

IF Filter: You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

Mono: If an analog FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation.

US/European Tuning: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing,

      Display Features

Detachable Face: The JVC KD-R330 features a detachable face to deter theft. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

LCD: The head unit features a 14-segment, one-line LCD with adjustable brightness and dimmer settings.

Brightness: The unit offers an adjustable display and button illumination brightness level (0-31) for day and nighttime driving.

Display/Button Illumination Dimmer: The display/button illumination dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display/button illumination is always dimmed), or Auto (display dims when 12-volts is applied to the orange/white illumination lead).

      Bluetooth/Remote Control

Optional Bluetooth: The unit's rear-panel auxiliary input can also be used to connect JVC's KS-BTA100 Bluetooth Adapter (105KSBTA10, sold separately). The KS-BTA100 must be plugged into the rear-panel auxiliary input, and not the front-panel auxiliary input. The front-panel auxiliary input does not support Bluetooth. The KS-BTA100 gives you hands-free communication from your compatible Bluetooth mobile phone and wireless streaming audio from a Bluetooth enabled digital audio player. The optional JVC Bluetooth Adapter includes a super-sensitive microphone, an Answer/End button, and playback controls. The KD-R330 can be set to automatically mute any music audio to your vehicle's speakers so you can listen to your telephone call using your car speakers.

Note: Not all Bluetooth devices will be compatible. Visit the JVC Mobile Entertainment Bluetooth Support Page for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled devices.

Wireless Remote Control: The KD-R330 comes supplied with a wireless remote control (RM-RK52). The remote contains Power, Attenuator, Sound, Source, Tracking, and Volume functions. The remote operates off of a single CR2025 3V Lithium-cell battery (included).

      Great basic unit

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this radio because I didn't want to spend a lot of $$ on a radio for my 4x4. I get a lot of dust, dirt, and mud in my vehicle so I needed something basic and not expensive. I like the ease of tuning and changing bands, as well as the ruggedness of the unit.
      Pros:
Great basic radio with no frills. Easy to use.
      Cons:
      None so far.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit to replace an old analog stereo in my camper. It sounds better than the orginial stereo ever did, and the receiver is good for pulling in distant stations. I was not looking for top notch sound, but something to listen to local radio and also the ability to pipe our TV into it (in camper) so TV sound will be everywhere in the camper. I am happy for what I got for the price.
      Pros:
Great receiver, rear input, front input, ability to adjust sound in many ways. Since this unit was installed in our camper, the remote control comes in very handy!
      Cons:
Adjustment of bass, treble, etc.. has to be done within the menu, it is not a problem though because once you get it set, you probablly will not change it that much. Once you get used to the menu it is fairly easy and quick.

      A little dissatisfied

A big improvement over my stock cassette in my 1999 taurus wagon. Now I can play CD's and use the accessory input to play music
      Pros:
      Nice sound from stock speakers
      Cons:
I enjoy listening to AM radio. I might just as well have a pocket radio in the car. The reception and interference is horrible....engine static...heater motor static,...windshield wiper motor static. I know grounding can cause a problem so I made extra sure about that. It might me that the antenna cable that came with the after market mount (it runs all the way to the rear antenna (which is newly replaced also) is sub par. Who knows?

      Cassette Player Upgrade

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a Pioneer cassette receiver in my 1996 Impala that I was using for my old cassettes. I purchased that unit from Crutchfield in 1998 and used their conversion kit for the installation. I now replaced the old Pioneer with the JVC to be able to play CDs (Yes, I'm an "oldster"). After a few wire splices the unit fit the install kit the Pioneer had been mounted in. Sound quality is great with my JVC speakers purchased previously in 1998 from Crutchfield.

      So Stoked with This Radio

Written By H2OMAN, Oak Ridge, NJ on Thursday, May 02, 2013

I purchased this unit to replace my factory radio in my 2004 Accord Sedan. I selected it based on the video review, simplicity of controls and cost and elected to install it using the aftermarket kit in the cubby below the existing radio/climate controls. The included wire harness made the installation a breeze, and this unit CRANKS. Although I'm not an audiofile, I am pretty picky about my music and this unit does way more than I need. I mated it up with 6x9 JVC DRVN speakers in the rear and recently installed the component JVC DRVN 6.5s in the doors with tweeters mounted in the plastic sail panels located by both side view mirrors. After doing this, I am wowwed at the improvement over the factory stereo system. I can listen to the music louder and am hearing sounds never heard before with little to no distortion. Having the matching components made the difference. The head unit remote is super slick and I prefer that over the buttons since my eyesite is not what it used to be (I'm 50 okay..) The built in EQ settings are very useful and easy to switch between. I would buy this whole system again in a heartbeat! I also used the technical service as two of the leads (Illumination {Orange/Stripe} & External Power {Blue}) I needed clarification on connections. I'm now driving around listening to my CD's to hear the difference. You won't be dissappointed!!
      Pros:
Great Punch, Many features and ease of use. Love the remote and EQ presets!!
      Cons:
As some commented, the Night brightness of the bigger buttons is some folks pet peeve, for others its a plus in the "coolness factor". I'm indifferent. The menu system on these new head units does take getting used to, but anyone will encounter that over a factory "fossil".

      Durable radio!

Written By tech, Colorado on Monday, April 29, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great durable radio. It is installed in a semi truck that travels up and down some pretty rough roads and the radio works good. We always buy JVC radios to replace factory truck radios when they go bad. JVC radios are durable, dependable, have the features our drivers want, and the price is right.
      Pros:
Remote control. Two Aux inputs that allows the drivers to plug their satellite radio into the Rear Aux and an Ipod into the front Aux. Price.

      Good Value!

Written By Chase, Boise, ID on Saturday, April 20, 2013

I really like my JVC KD-R330. It sounds really great, and it wasn't too expensive. I replaced the factory stereo in my 04 Mustang with this and am really pleased. It sounds great, and looks awesome. There are two things that kept this from being a 5 star product. First, it can be a little complicated to maneuver through the menus. But this isn't a huge deal once you get it dialed in. Second, the rca sends to my subs aren't super loud. I had an Alpine receiver in my other car and my subs were really loud. With this receiver I have to turn up the sub level all the way and turn my master volume up in order to get them pumping. Other than these two things I really enjoy this receiver and would recommend it to anyone who is looking to get a good value.
      Pros:
      Value, looks, aux inputs
      Cons:
      Menu, sub rca isn't loud

Great product for the money. Easy to install. Love the aux input for my iPhone.
      Pros:
      Good value for money.
      Cons:
When you turn the unit off it is completely dark. There is no illumination for when you're driving at night.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far I am very happy with this unit. It was very economical and yet has better sound then the original equipment. The adaptor wiring harness had very detailed instructions which made installation easy, even for a novice. The only negative I see is that during daylight hours, the backlight isn't sufficient to read the screen easily even on the brightest setting. That is a shortcoming I am able to put up with.
      Pros:
Good sound quality. Ease of installation.
      Cons:
Lighting not as bright as I would like it to be.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was just looking for a basic CD receiver with a front auxiliary jack for my Android phone. Unit looks good, performs very well, it sounds better than the factory unit did. For the price, you can't beat this unit! I would recommend this to anyone wanting quality at a great price. Menu is a little tedious to navigate, just get the settings where you want them and live them there. Very easy to install with Crutchfield install kit and wiring harness. It took me about 1 1/2 hours to do it all. Installed in a 2005 Nissan Titan
      Pros:
Great price & performance. Did not think I would, but I actually use the remote.
      Cons:
Audio menu settings are not the easiest to navigate.

I think its a good deal. I was surprised to find out that JVC is a part of the Kenwood corp. which I also dig. I'm impressed so far with the R330, but now I've got to get new speakers for it!
      Pros:
I'm happy with its performance so far and I'm sure it will improve when I get new speakers 4 it!

radio works great and I love it!
      Pros:
Has many cool features and are easy to use.
      Cons:
programming the stations was a little complicated at first but once I learn how to do it, it took no time at all to program the rest of the stations.

Needed to replace stock radio/cassette with some thing that would accept/ substitue for the cassette which we used for the XM radio. Crutchfield tech rep set me up with this radio and all the needed brackets and adaptors.
      Pros:
Easy install and even makes the 18 year old speakers sound great.
      Cons:
Hardest part disconnecting the battery's neg terminal, spent more time on it than taking out the dash.

Best bang for the buck. No issues what so ever, Crutchfield provided everything I needed. Had the old stereo out and this on in quick (20 Minutes). Hardest part was disconnecting the battery which is my fault for owning a Chrysler.
      Pros:
      Price, Quality, ease of install
      Cons:
Only con I really have is the menu navigation for set up. Not too big a deal but should be a little less of a hassle
