Pioneer

Our take on the Pioneer CD-SR100

by Charlie Pastorfield

Pioneer wants you to to keep your hands on the wheel, so they developed this special remote to enhance on-road safety and convenience. The CD-SR100 wireless remote controls a wide range of receiver functions, and attaches securely to your steering wheel with a supplied strap.

The convenient remote affords fingertip control over volume, mute, source selection (AM, FM, CD, etc.), up/down/left/right cursors, and audio settings. The CD-SR100 is for use with Pioneer's IP-Bus receivers (compatible receivers will have a "P" in the model number). Dimensions: 1-15/16"W x 2-7/8"H x 1-1/8"D. 1-year warranty.

Driving a Scion TC. Mine doesnt work anywhere on the steering wheel so I mounted it to my e-brake handle for now. You need a direct line of sight for it to work.
Pros:
Works with the radio out of the package
Cons:
Does not work any where on the steering wheel

Must Have Accessory

Written By Mac, Jackson, MS on Saturday, May 12, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Upgraded my 02 Tahoe stock audio to a Pioneer DEH-P9400BH. One of my required features was a wireless steering wheel remote.

The PIoneer head unit comes with a thin flat wireless remote which is smaller than a credit card; it works perfectly well, but I wanted a remote that would attach to my steering wheel, and operate in a very similar manner to current factory steering wheel remote controllers. Pioneer is the only company I found to offer such a product - CD-SR100. This is a small oval-shaped, infrared control that mounts to your steering wheel with a mounting adapter and two stretchable vinyl/rubber straps. The remote has function and volume controls - the latter located on the back side of the remote itself (very much like current GM controls). Every function available from the head unit is replicated on this remote. It operates from all points of the steering wheel radius (mine is mounted at the 4:00 position), and seems to be the perfect solution to my requirement of keeping my hands on the wheel.

This remote is simple to install, and requires no expertise or tools other than some scissors - to cut the straps down. Once installed it works very well. Only problem I've had is that the remote itself clips onto it's mounting bracket, but does so in a way that it never seems that secure. Wish it felt more solid in that mounting bracket.

If you don't have factory wheel controls, this is a must have accesory! Great product, Pioneer!
Pros:
Operates all radio features Ergonomic design - comfortable to use
Cons:
Remote isn't secure on its mounting bracket

Not usable; IR signal too weak

Written By Rich, Boulder, CO on Friday, April 13, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The remote is only functional with a clear line of sight to the head unit (a new Pioneer 4400HD). When mounted on the steering wheel, the signal is blocked by the wheel itself. There is no opening or lens to spread the IR signal as on most remotes. I have a small car (Miata), and even though the wheel is very close to the receiver, it's not usable. Too bad this seems to be only aftermarket wheel remote Crutchfield is aware of. I'll be sending this back if tech support can't suggest any way to make it work.
Pros:
Simple, easy to use.
Cons:
Signal to weak to mount on wheel.

Needs Improvement

Written By captlou, WI on Saturday, March 24, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ended up installing @ bottom of steering wheel because of other controls in the way. Sometimes it won't work, but since I'm usually using my left hand, I can put the right hand by my right knee to bounce the signal to the radio.
Pros:
Good idea Works great (sometimes)
Cons:
Should be RF signal with the same built into radio Volume buttons on back side are kinda worthless if you mount anywhere except the 2 to 4 o'clock location. Can't search thru music on usb drive, just jump to next song or folder

So-So

Written By twade, Orange, TX on Friday, January 27, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Remote works great until you attach it to steering wheel. I read where someone mounted it upside down (turn it 180 degrees) and it worked great. I turned mine and they were right. Works great upside down. Looks weird, but at least I don't have to reach all the way to radio to make adjustments. Also noticed that it only works in about a 60 degree window. Move steering wheel to far to left (top) or to right (bottom) and remote does not funtion.
Pros:
Hands get to stay on steering wheel.
Cons:
Have to learn functions upside down. Ok as long as you don't have to read!

Pioneer CD-SR100

Written By Blake, Carrabelle, FL on Tuesday, January 24, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Read the previous reviews on this and figured I would take the chance because I liked the idea that this controller would give me much more function control of my stereo than my factory steering wheel radio controls. It did not work for me at all. If I pointed the remote at the radio while in my hand it worked great but when attached to the steering wheel - nothing. The radio in my Tundra is slightly recessed but not enough to think it wouldn't work at least most of the time. I tried every position I could on the steering wheel along with turning it upside down like one previous reviewer stated with no luck. The stereo already came with a handheld remote so back to Crutchfield it went for the PAC SWI-PS steering wheel control adapter. Now my factory steering controls are running my stereo like it was still the old one. Don't waste your time on this remote.
Pros:
None since it did not do what it was supposed to.
Cons:
Did not work. If your radio is set into your dash at all this probably will not work for you.

Does not have enough range, you have to hold it almost next to the radio for it to work.

Pioneer CD-SR100

Written By mac, Los Angeles, CA on Friday, June 10, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed relatively easily but comes with minimum instructions. Picture is not same as product, instead of one large strap there are two small ones. It takes some effort to pull the straps thru for a snug fit and then the challenge is to tuck them into the holder to get them out of the way.

I have the hand held remote for my Pioneer DEH P3800 MP and it works fine. I wanted a steering wheel remote to make it a no look option. This remote is marginal since it is not consistent in communicating with the radio even though it is just 2 feet from it.

great addition

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this unit to work with a newly installed stereo (DEH-P6200BT) in my 1994
Nissan pickup. It worked perfectly for me & I'm glad I have it. In addition to basic
functions, I can also use it to answer incoming calls via the Pioneer's bluetooth
phone feature for even better "hands-free" operation.

Some have complained about the design of the Pioneer multi-control knob and
I see what they are referring to, but this steering wheel remote sort of helps with
this issue as numerous functions can be performed directly from this steering
wheel instead of messing with the multi-control knob on the head unit. Since
my truck is pretty old (1994) and pretty basic, I just assumed there was no way
to have any kind of steering wheel controls, but this unit made it possible. Also,
I can easily take it off if needed & if I want to put it into another vehicle.

I also suggest getting a steering wheel cover of some sort. I did this and it
helps conceal the SR100's attachment straps which then make it more
comfortable to drive & turn the wheel. Also protects the attachment strap from
possible sun damege. A wheel cover can be picked up at Target/Walmart for
about $10-15. As usual, Crutchfield support is top notch. Thanks

The remote works well in my 2009 PT Cruiser. The previous mentioned issue of
the locking tab not engaging fully on the remote was cured by putting some
folded paper under the tab. Otherwise an excellent remote to keep you from
having to take your eyes off the road to adjust you r head unit.

Best thing ever!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit about 3 years ago after my wife's car was stolen - we got it back but never found the stereo remote. I love this thing! I am about to replace the stereo in my truck and am probably choosing a Pioneer stereo just because I want to get another of these remotes. The only problem I have ever had with this remote not working is when I have the wheel turned like when turning a sharp corner and try to press a button then. It must just be the line of sight is too far away then. But that is really no problem. My wife and I have really enjoyed this remote, and it was completely worth the money.

Works great. Installed it in the 3 0'clok position and worked right out of the box. It works well with mt DEH 980BT. Wish it was included with the car stereo. Controls all the higher functions and is a lot more convenient to use than the remote.
