Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Our take on the Boston Acoustics S65RC

by Ken Nail

Boston Acoustic's S series speakers let you enjoy clear, natural sound, even with a low-powered system. And with a wide variety of sizes, you'll find a set for most commonly-sized speaker openings.

The Boston S65RC 6-1/2" speaker features a 3/4" tweeter with a built-in cooling system for long term reliability and excellent power handling. A contoured tweeter plane guides high-frequency output to create a larger listening "sweet spot," while Boston's Amplitude Modification Device (AMD™) reduces harshness in the upper mids for clear, detailed sound.

The sturdy woofer cone teams up with a durable butyl rubber surround to produce tight, clean bass with minimal distortion. And you'll hear a smooth blend between the woofer and tweeter, thanks to the built-in crossover.

Note: Boston describes this model as a 6" speaker. Most manufacturers designate this same frame size as a 6-1/2" speaker. For simplicity's sake we list it as a 6-1/2" speaker.

Highlights:

  • 2-way 6-1/2" speakers (pair)
  • copolymer woofer cone with rubber surround
  • 3/4" Type-S3 soft dome tweeter
  • power range: 2-35 watts RMS (100 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 58-20,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 92 dB
  • top-mount depth: 1-15/16"

Tweeter: The type-S3 3⁄4-inch tweeter's soft dome is Ferro fluid cooled for excellent power handling and reliability. The AMD (Amplitude Modification Device) located on the tweeter plane provides acoustical tuning for the midrange response while the shape of the tweeter plane improves off-axis response.

    Beter than factory

Written By Curt D, Chaska, MN on Wednesday, July 25, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A lot of "Disappointed's" review rang true for me. These speaks sould clean and clear with some materiel, sometimes the midrange is blarey, and sometimes they just sound muffled. NO 6" speaker will give much bass but these give about the amount I expect from this size. I am giving them a clean 20W from an older outboard Alpine amp. I'm tempted to try giving them more power but I'm not sure how much it would help. The 6.5" Boston Pro's I have in the back with 80W into each help the bass a lot. For the price they are OK.
    Pros:
Fit fine with Crutchfield supplied brackets in the odd sphaped factory openings in my 2005 Acura RSX.
    Cons:
Bass is never tight, these speakers have an overly "soft" sound. They don't sort out the details of the music well.

The speakers are well built, since i was leaving the factory radio in place, these speakers are the best bang for the buck withought having to buy an AMP. They sound really good, but lack a little bass.

Best factory replacement speaker for Dodge Ram

Written By Glenn D., San Antonio, TX on Sunday, April 24, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a hard time finding a replacement speaker for the factory model in my Ram
without making major modifications. These were recommended by the
Crutchfield team, and they work great.

I read several comments regarding "breaking in" the speaker, which I had never
heard of before. Every time I've replaced speakers in the past, what I heard
initially was pretty much what I got. These were "different". The base response
at first install was a little lacking compared to the factory models. I gave them a
chance, and was glad I did. As they "broke in" (and yes... they did), my bass
response got stronger and the sound was much better. Now, I'm completely
happy with the sound, and enjoy them much more than the factory originals. I
had blown-up the factory ones with a little too much bass, and they were
bottoming out. These Boston Acoustics produce better sound without bottoming
out like the factory speakers did.

Well worth the money. If you are looking for a factory replacement speaker for a
Dodge Ram, get these. Use them for about a week or so, and I'm sure you will
    be smiling like I am.

    Sound much better

Written By Phil L., Orlando, FL on Saturday, March 26, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The three speakers out of four that worked sounded great compared to the
original speakers that were completely shot in my 2001 Beetle. I was very
disappointed to have to take the car apart again to install the replacement 4th
speaker. Customer service was GREAT and the replacement speaker arrived
quickly but I still have to take the interior apart twice.

    Great speakers, bad fit

Written By Arion, Bay Area, CA on Wednesday, November 03, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The S65RC's sound great, especially compared to the factory speakers they replaced in my 2003 Acura RSX. Unfortunately, even though they are "Reduced Clearance" and were specifically recommended by a Crutchfield advisor for my car, they simply did not fit with the supplied brackets. It ended up being a big pain, taking about 4 hours to fabricate my own solution.

    Disappointed

Written By tms, San Francisco, CA on Tuesday, September 21, 2010

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these in May/2010, a set of BA 6x9s (S95), and the JVC Arsenal to go in my 05 Tacoma.

From the start sound was disappointing from all speakers. Some things sounded good, but others poor. Some frequencies sound good, but others make them sound tingy or vibrate considerably. Very narrow range. My JVC has many sound adjusting features and I've tried every possible combination. I'm no professional when it comes to sound, but these speakers just don't cut it in my opinion. Recently one of these sounds like it may be blown.

For 5 years I dreamed about upgrading my system, now that this has happened I am still disappointed.

Installed in a 2000 Honda Accord EX-L Sedan

Written By Josh, San Antonio, TX on Wednesday, July 28, 2010

These are not a TRUE perfect fit for 6th gen Honda Accord sedans. You will have to modify the plastic factory speaker baffles. This was quite easy however. The speaker terminals get in the way of a plastic lip inside the baffle, all you have to do is saw or cut off this lip and the speaker is able to lay flush with the baffle. Also, the three screw holes are not quite even with each other, but I was able to make them work. Overall, the install went well.

I purchased the Honda speaker harnesses too. These worked wonderful. I just clipped them to the factory speaker harness and didn't have to mess with stripped wires or crimping.

These took some time to break in. They are indeed bass-shy. They have some punch to them but it is what you'd expect for a 6 inch speaker at this price range. The mids and highs are good. In reality, I'd give them 3.75 stars. These just happen to be the only "decent" speakers that are a "drop-in" fit for my car make and model. Looking back, I probably would have opted to do some more modifications to get a better speaker. But I'm not disappointed. These speakers fill my car with good sound. Five times better than the factory paper woofers I had.

I have an Alpine HU connected to an Alpine 445 power pack amp giving these speakers 45w RMS each. Boston underrates their speakers and though they say 35w RMS is their max, I wouldn't be afraid of even putting 50w RMS into them. They can handle it just fine.

I just purchased two sets of these speakers as well as a set of S35's fpr my dash. I have a
2010 Dodge Ram, and kept the factory player. They were very easy to install with the adapters
supplied by Crutchfield, and quite a difference in the sound. I am very pleased.

    Sound Great!

Written By Matt, Scarborough, ME on Saturday, May 08, 2010
Installed in a 2009 Subaru Forester
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers because I have had good experience with Boston's in the
past, and these definitely didn't let me down. They sound great! They are being
driven by a JVC KW-XR810 with 22 watts RMS and they are still VERY loud!

I agree that they are Bass-shy, but here's why that doesn't bother me. The bass
they do produce is flawless, and my doors can't handle more bass without
rattling. I'll be adding a sub to my system soon to fill out the sound, but
honestly, these do a pretty good job for 6.5" shallow mount speakers!

These fill out the high end very well too.

Not a huge step up from some budget speakers

Written By Taffy, Omaha, NE on Tuesday, March 10, 2009
Installed in a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put a pair of these in the rear deck of a 1997 Chevy Cavalier, running off a 17x4 RMS Sony receiver. I had tried several so-called budget models, then tried these Bostons thinking I'd get a large uptick in sound quality. They DO sound nice in the upper ranges - very smooth and clear. But ultimately, their sound wasn't much better then some of the less expensive models I tried. After about a week of usage, the speakers broke in and the lower end did become more pronounced, but not nearly to the extent that the Kenwood's and Sony's I tried did. Another reviewer called them 'bass-shy' and I would certainly agree with that. These speakers ARE built very well: nice and heavy with quality rubber surrounds. I suspect in a less noisy vehicle than mine and with good power and a subwoofer, they would really shine. But for me, I felt I could do better with a slightly cheaper pair.

    Little powerhouse

Written By Luke, york, PA on Friday, February 06, 2009

I was very pleased with the crisp highs and mids with these speakers.
Installation was cake, and very straight forward. The bass was lacking a
little, but what do you expect for a 6 inch speaker. But after running them
for about 2 weeks, they start to sound much better once they are broken in
a little. Once again boston acoustics pleased me. great product!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

bought for a 1995 Subaru Impreza Outback. The "outfit my car" section said these would work. They "fit", but I had to drill 2 holes in the speaker plate to properly screw to the stock mounting plate - they were about 1/2" off the mark. (If looking at the speaker like a clock, the holes had to be drilled beneath the ones at about the 10 and 2 positions.)

other than than that small detail, they work and sound great. I would definitely recommend them.

Nice sounding speakers, but choose something else if you're installing them in '98 Tahoe doors. The adapter bracket that Crutchfield sents with them won't work for your door. Get 6.75" speakers, they'll fit perfectly without any adapter brackets.
