Grado

Our take on the Grado SR125i

by Dave Bar

Affordable audiophile headphones

No matter what your taste in music, the Grado SR125i headphones can make your tunes sound better. They deliver classic Grado sound in spades — intimate midrange with full-bodied vocals, sparkling-clear highs, and tight, punchy bass. Their sense of warmth and immediacy may occasionally startle you. We think these 'phones make an outstanding value for audiophiles on a budget. You can easily drive them using the headphone outputs on most home audio systems, and they even work great with your portable player or laptop using Grado's optional miniplug adapter. They also benefit nicely from the addition of a headphone amplifier.

Born in Brooklyn and built to perform

Each pair of SR125i headphones is still made right in Brooklyn, New York where the Grado family has been building award-winning audio gear for almost 60 years. Like all Grado headphones, the SR125i uses a vented "open-air" earcup design with large, non-resonant air chambers for powerful, extended low frequency response and a more open, spacious sound. The diaphragm in each driver has been put through a special "de-stressing" process that allows it to deliver more music detail for an even larger soundstage. A beefy, eight-conductor connecting cable and ultra-high purity copper voice coils give these 'phones a refined, ultra-smooth top end and dynamic, yet tightly controlled bass.

Highlights:

  • open-back, on-the-ear design with replaceable ear cushions
  • vented diaphragms (open-air) for spacious, low-distortion sound and extended bass response
  • special "de-stressed" diaphragms provide enhanced levels of inner detail for a more open soundstage
  • eight-conductor connecting cable for tighter, more controlled sound
  • adjustable headband for a custom fit
  • driver pairs matched to within 0.1 dB for better stereo imaging
  • ultra-high purity, long-crystal copper (UHPLC) voice coils for smoother sound and greater accuracy
  • 67" eight-conductor copper headphone cable terminated with a 1/4" plug (optional Grado 1/8" miniplug adapter available)
  • optional 15-foot Grado headphone extension cable available
  • frequency response: 20-20,000 Hz
  • sound pressure level (at 1mW): 98 dB
  • impedance: 32 ohms
  • warranty: 1 year (does not include earpads)
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

    Features

Vented diaphragm: Grado headphones have a vented diaphragm for a large, airy, three-dimensional sound. The large air chamber is designed to extend the bass response.

Drivers: The diaphragm is made of a low mass polymer, developed with the compliance of the suspension in mind to achieve the desired low frequency response. The diaphragm's total mass is designed to provide a full 20 kHz bandwidth, while avoiding break-up at lower frequencies. High power neodymium magnets maximize efficiency and minimize weight. The left and right drivers are matched to within 0.1 dB for exact imaging.

Voice Coil: The SR125i's voice-coils are wound from ultra-high purity, long crystal (UHPLC) oxygen free copper. This high conductivity copper yields a clear transmission and minimizes coloration, resulting in smooth, clean and dynamic sound output.

    Fine headphones

Written By Jim, Lutherville, MD on Monday, March 04, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Without any of the typical "audiophile" weirdness: I use these headphones with an iPod. The headphones sound really good to my ear, even without an amp. The cables are thick, and the build quality seems pretty good. They fit comfortably on the head, and the foam ear pads are soft, not scratchy. I'm very pleased with this purchase, with no buyer's remorse. Would purchase again.
    Pros:
    See above
    Cons:
    None worth mention.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice sounding phones, very nice. Was having issues with spouse acceptance factor and the folded horn subwoofer in the media room. These don't really cancel noise and there is a strong backwave which can be heard by everyone. Even so, the sound is so good I'm gonna live with it.
    Pros:
    Comfortable
    Cons:
not noise cancelling loud to others in the room

    Great-o

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Always wanted a pair of Grado phones, but had a tough time coughing up the cash. This Grado series is at a price point where most consumers can indulge in the audio senses. I am very happy with the sound quality and fit. I have a smaller head and find that many phones are too large even at the smallest setting to fit correctly on my head. These phones fit well and have a secure, but not tight placement. The ear padding is firm, but not too firm for comfortable long listening sessions. I wear mine in a crowded office and have had many co-workers try them out. All agree - great fit and sound. I plan to keep these as long as possible, so I purchased replacement foam at the time of purchase. The foam replacements were reasonably priced as well (bought 2 sets). Overall I am very pleased with this purchase. These days it gets harder and harder to say that for most products, but in this case it is dead on target. I recommend Grado often - particularly this series - for those who want to get into better quality than "celebrity endorsed" brands, which are all over the shelves at the big box retailers. That would give them a clear 5 out of 5 rating in my book. For now I give this model a 4.75 out of 5 for excellent sound and fit. Lost a quarter pint on lead cable casing and general cosmetics. That is minor to me since it is all about the sound quality.
    Pros:
Excellent sound. Very open and musical, neutral and clean. Does not add any "brand imprint" to the audio source as many other popular celebrity-endorsed brands do. After trying mine, three coworkers ordered the same set or a set from this Grado series. Marketing and advertising feed you misleading lies and info about products making them seem better than they actually are. Sound doesn't lie - right? Let your ears decide.
    Cons:
My only suggestion is to perhaps use a lead cable that has a different casing. Possibly a soft-touch rubber that is on many competitors products or even better, use braided cloth like in some of their other high end models. That would add a very nice finish touch to an already great product.

    Outstanding

Written By MylesS, PA on Wednesday, November 02, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, Comfort is both a pro and a con, let me explain. In the short term, these light weight headphones are very comfortable. In the long run however (1 or more hours of use) they get a little scratchy around the ears. I suggest taking them off every now and then to refresh your senses!

As for sound, it's extraordinary for headphones of this price. I would argue there isn't anything better for less than $200, or even $250.

I use these with a NuForce headphone amp, and I've extremely impressed with the sound. It's very clean, very dynamic (depending on the recording) and has alot of impact. With most rock music, these are very immediate with drum hits, and the mid range is very detailed.

If I were to say a few more things, I would say they have a ton of texture in the sound. They make music enjoyable again.

As a final word, I haven't been this excited about a pair of headphones since I purchased a pair of Etymotic HF5 earbuds for $120. Those by the way are also outstanding for the price. Just like my Etymotics, I would say these Grados have the same value in the fact that they sound FAR better than anything else for the price.

    Overall... Excellent.
    Pros:
Best in class, very dynamic, very immediate, Comfort
    Cons:
Appearance, Comfort (Pro and Con there)
