Our take on the Grundig S450DLX

by Ralph Graves

This rugged field radio from Grundig makes a great travel companion, whether you're camping out or just relaxing in a hotel room. Its highly sensitive tuner can pull in AM, FM, and shortwave band radio signals. The radio comes with a built-in antenna, and inputs so you can connect an external antenna for even greater range.

Radio tuning options

The S450DLX features an analog tuner, so you can make fine adjustments and optimize reception. You can switch the sensitivity to pull in distant stations or keep local stations from coming in too strong. A variable RF gain control enhances weaker signals for better listening. And you can lock in your station and the radio will compensate for minor frequency drift.

Great radio sound

The radio's large, full-range speaker delivers strong, clear sound, which you can adjust to your liking with the bass and treble controls. A line-level stereo minijack output lets you connect it to your home audio system or a set of powered speakers. You can connect your favorite portable player and use the S450DLX as its speaker through the radio's line-level input.

Home and portable power options

The S450DLX comes with an AC adapter for home use, or use six "D" batteries (available separately) for portable operation. And if you have a 12V adapter, you can keep the radio powered in your car or boat.

    Features

AM/FM/SW Radio: The Grundig S450DLX portable radio features an AM, FM, and Shortwave tuner. Although the readout is digital, the tuner is analog, allowing fine frequency tuning. The unit offers 3 frequency tuning steps (fast/slow/stop). The frequency lock helps minimize signal drifting when listening to AM, FM, or SW stations. You can store up to 50 station presets; 10 for each band (FM, AM, SW 1/2/3).

    • AM: AM stations in North America range from 520 to 1710kHz  (10kHz steps) and from 522 to 1620kHz (9kHz steps) in other parts of the world. The AM antenna is built into the radio (there are also spring-clip connectors for adding an external AM antenna). There is an AM RF gain knob which compensates for distortion between strong and weaker stations. In addition, you can select a Wide or Narrow bandwidth setting to reduce interference from adjacent frequencies.
    • FM: The FM frequency range is from 87 to 108MHz. The unit features a telescopic antenna (there is also a coaxial connector for upgrading the FM antenna). You can set the FM band to Mono (when listening through built-in speaker) or Stereo (when listening through headphones). If the FM station you're listening to is too strong that it sound distorted, switch to Local mode. Otherwise, leave it on DX mode, which stands for maximum distance.
    • SW: Shortwave enables listening to broadcasts over vast distances including other countries and continents. Shortwave has continuous frequency range from 1711 to 29999kHz. The Shortwave tuner uses the same telescopic antenna as the FM tuner.

LCD Backlight Display: The S450DLX features a large LCD backlight display with frequency, clock, battery level indicator, and signal strength indicator.

Full-Range Sound: The S450DLX uses a high performance MOSFET amplifier to power its single full-range speaker. The unit also offers bass & treble control.

Auxiliary Input: There is a minijack (3.5mm) auxiliary input for connecting an external audio source (such as your MP3 player) to the Grundig S450DLX.

Line Output: There is also a minijack (3.5mm) line output which allows you to feed the audio signal of the S450DLX to another component, such as your home stereo system.

Headphone Jack: A 3.5mm (1/8") headphone jack allows you to connect a set of earphones for private listening. The unit's speaker will mute when headphones are connected.

Alarm Clock: The Grundig S450DLX features a 12/24hr digital clock with dual wakeup alarms, snooze function, and sleep timer (1/5/10/15/30/45/60/90 min).

Carry Strap: The AM/FM/Shortwave field radio includes a carrying strap to make it easy to take with you to the office, outside, or on vacation.

Dual Power Source: The Grundig S450DLX can operate off of 6 "D" batteries (not included) or AC power (using the included AC power adapter). In the event of an AC power failure, the radio stays on and switches to battery power (if batteries are installed).

    Grundig S450DLX

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A fine heavy duty receiver. All stations I tune to come in clear and I have the tone adjusted as needed for clarity. In view of the fact I live in a severe weather area, the radio works well on battires.

    Allwave Receiver

Written By Merit, Westminster, MD on Monday, January 14, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice receiver for wide-ranging listening. I use it for either instrumental music or talk radio where the separate tone controls help it to be accommodating to the quite different bandwidth and tonal requirements of these two uses.

Higher (9V) operating voltage allows for more complete battery utilization but users will find a voltmeter useful for identifying and excluding weak cells of the 6-cell battery.

This product appears to be functionally (and nearly visually) equivalent to the CCrane-SW product by Crane radio. Performance of the two appears quite close too.

For flexibility, there are a number of useful I/O ports - 3 each for antennae and audio and more! I'm hoping to utilize the I/O port that emits the i.f. signal with an outboard processor that produces audio, sending it into the "line-in" port to demodulate/decode SSB or DRM modulated signals.

Nice readout and controls but not the best control placement. Knobs have a loose feel that give a *sense* of low quality that's not necessarily true. Too many other niceties to mention in this limited space.
    Pros:
+Bandwidth control actually works! +Scanning automatically covers all International SW broadcast bands while skipping over other (HAM, Code, Phones, etc.), but cannot be limited to just a single SW broadcast band. "Quick" key function helps accelerate large tuning changes, especially, when getting started with spectrum survey and memory loading. +Nice lighting system, LED for large display and incandescent for the illuminated keys, is switch selectable three ways.
    Cons:
    1) By far the worst thing about this product is the very deficient Users Guide. There are internal "birdies" and other anomalous behaviors that should be documented there, needs I'net data. 2) Without a keypad, memory addressing is roundabout- even awkward with a maximum of 10 button pushes to reach one particular memorized frequency but the most probable quantity is 5. 3) Lineborne electronic noise gains entrance into the unit via the AC adapter unit. There are no filters on the DC line
