NAD

The sound solution for the less-is-more movement

On one hand, you want something that sounds much better than a boombox or iPod® speaker. On the other hand, you want something that's far less complex than a surround sound system. Then you'll find your sweet spot in a classic stereo receiver. Or maybe one from the new breed that includes Internet radio or other network music options. Add two speakers (and another music source, if you like), and you're ready to relax and enjoy your tunes. It might even be all you really need for TV sound.

Our take on the NAD C 725BEE

by Dave Bar

NAD created the C 725BEE stereo receiver just for music lovers. It teams up the top-notch audio performance and technology of their separates with the space-saving convenience of a single component. Boasting 50 high-current watts per channel, this receiver delivers a surprisingly powerful sonic punch that's sure to satisfy even critical listeners.

Advanced technology for stunning sound
Meticulous engineering and high-quality construction are the hallmarks of NAD components. Inside the C 725BEE, you'll find the same type of high-current toroidal transformer and discrete amplifier design that NAD uses on their best gear for dynamic, crystal-clear sound. NAD's exclusive PowerDrive™ technology automatically senses your speaker's impedance, then optimizes the receiver's power supply to deliver the most dynamic power possible. This also allows it to easily handle even hard-to-drive four ohm speaker loads. Plus, a patented distortion-canceling circuit in the receiver's output stage ensures your music stays clean and pure.

Flexible connections and convenience
The C 725BEE's back panel offers enough inputs to hook up a total of five audio components. There's a port for iPod® integration with an optional NAD dock.) A minijack input on the front makes it easy to connect a portable music player. A set of preamp out/main-amp input jacks let you add an external power amp for future system expansion. And NAD included an output for easily connecting a powered subwoofer. Plus, the receiver's RS232 port and infrared flasher connections allow you to operate this receiver as part of a whole-house system.

Highlights:

  • 50 watts x 2 into 8 ohms (20-20,000 Hz) at 0.02% THD

    Features

Soft Clipping: NAD's Soft Clipping circuit gently limits the output of the C 725BEE to minimize audible distortion when the amplifier is over-driven. While Soft Clipping can be left on at all times to reduce the likelihood of audible distortion from excessive volume settings, you can also turn the circuit off for critical listening if you prefer.

Pre-out/Main-in Loop: Factory jumpers connect the main amplifier input to the full range preamp outputs. This offers the flexibility of inserting an equalizer, surround processor (when using multiple amps), or another type of processor between the two stages.

Tone Defeat: Bass and treble are adjusted using the rotary knobs on the front panel. The Tone Defeat feature bypasses these controls and is engaged with a button on the front panel or the remote.

Tuner: The AM/FM tuner can store up to 40 AM or FM presets. You can assign a name to each preset, up to 12 characters. The tuner also features RDS (Radio Data System); a service used by some radio stations to transmit data other than the audio signal (program type, text information, traffic announcements, etc).

Record Out/Zone 2: The stereo RCA line level outputs can be used as a signal for a recording component (tape, CD, etc) or a second zone. The source is selected independently of the main source and is not effected by the volume control. The included ZR 5 second zone remote controls the zone 2 output.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer turns the unit off after a delay of 15 to 90 minutes (adjustable in 15 minute intervals).

Remote Control: The SR 8 wireless remote will control the C 725BEE and NAD CD players.

Front Input: A 3.5mm mini-jack input on the front panel is labeled MP (Media Player); there is also an RCA MP input on to rear panel which is automatically disconnected when the front panel input is used.

    Connections

    Rear Panel:

    • Speakers: the speaker binding posts will accept single banana plugs, pin connectors, spade lugs up to 0.475" wide, and bare wire up to 12 gauge; there are four speaker outputs, A (left and right) and B (left and right)
    • Inputs: stereo RCA input jacks for MP (Media Player), CD, Disc, Aux, and Tape
    • Record Out/Zone 2: stereo RCA output jacks; used for recording or feeding zone 2
    • Pre Out: stereo RCA preamp outputs; jumpers to the main amplifier inputs are factory installed
    • Main In: stereo RCA preamp inputs; jumpers to the preamp outputs are factory installed
    • Subwoofer Out: single RCA preamp output
    • IR In: 3.5mm mini-jack input, used to control this unit using an optional infrared repeater or the IR output of another component
    • IR Out: 3.5mm mini-jack output, used to control another NAD component
    • 12 Volt Trigger Out: turn on/off another device along with the C 725BEE; the +12 volt trigger output is a 3.5mm mini-jack; the maximum output is 150 mA
    • RS 232: the RS-232 port allows connection to a compatible PC or external whole-house control system from companies such as AMX or Crestron
    • MP Dock Dataport: input for the NAD IPD-2 iPod dock

    What I expected

Written By Bob M, Napa Valley, CA on Monday, March 04, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit met my expectations nicely. Generally a very fine unit in its price range. I have been a fan of NAD units for some time, my last being the NAD 712. The sound is very coherent with nice delivery in the upper mid range and the highs. This range is delivered quite nicely with the characteristic smooth and clear tone. I am driving a pair of the larger Sonab omnidirectional speakers which tend to be somewhat bright and which do not tolerate any significant IM in these ranges. They sound really great when driver with clean sound which the NAD delivers. When driven hard however the sound tends to get a slight "blocky" or incoherant in the mid range wth large orchestral groups although no worse than most other units I have heard in their price range. When fed smaller groups or solo instruments they do produce a very nice clarity and sould stage. Overall, I think it a very nice unit for the price range. Possibly with larger speakers the blockyness I spoke of might disappear. I have only owned this unit for a few days, so it isn't really broken in yet and I'm sure my speakers have a lot to do with the overall sound reproduction. Upper midrange and High Frequency reproduction is very clear. Small group reproduction is excellent. When driven hard the midrange is a bit muddy but this could be the mediumsource and the speakers. Certainly worth a listen and make sure the ancillary equipment is up to the job.

    Pros:
A good unit, worth the price. Very nice small group presentation and staging. The blending control for the FM does a great job on weak signals taming down the normal FM "scrunge" in these circumstances.
    Cons:
Does take up a fair amount of space on the shelf and the company wants you to give it a fair amount of breathing room for cooling. Just fits with right angle cable fittings onto an 18" shelf, so if space is a problem for you it could be a tight fit. Check out the owners manual for physical specs.

    NAD Stereo Receiver

Written By KWF, Mobile, AL on Monday, October 08, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Outstanding sound and all the features I need. Plenty of power, high quality remotes and easy-to-use controls. If you are going to use headphones, the owner's manual says that the receiver will work with any impedance conventional headphones. If you are going to buy new headphones, I would recommend something around 200 ohms. My 34 ohm headphones sound great, but are so easily driven that changing volume by remote sometimes yields a change in level that is more than I intended. If you already own headphones, they will probably work fine. There is no "loudness" control, but I found this not to be important. The bass and treble controls seem to have enough span to do the job at low listening levels, where you might want the loudness feature. The unit has loads of other features, too numerous to discuss in a brief review.
    Pros:
I bought it for the sound, and was not disappointed. Plenty of inputs, easily switched.
    Cons:
No phono preamp, but there is a switched outlet provided on the back of the receiver, which is convenient for a separate phono preamp. There is essentially only one "record out" output, so if you have more than one recorder you will need a switch.

    NAD 725 Receiver

Written By Regina, Tucson, AZ on Monday, September 24, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this NAD receiver along with a pair of PSB T-6 speakers. I can't say anything but good things about this stereo system. The NAD receiver definitely has a lot of power. I Bi-Wired my speakers and still only turn the volume up to 1/4. I tested this receiver at a local store and was very impressed with the sound quality. After working with my Crutchfield advisor, the NAD was my choice for the type of music I listen to. I wanted a quality receiver and not a lot of bells and whistles. The NAD fits the bill. I'm a very satisfied customer. (FM tuner is great too.)

    Everything I expected

Written By ChrisP, Dallas, TX on Monday, April 02, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My new NAD C725BEE replaces a 25+ year old NAD 7250PE which now goes to the man cave. The performance, clarity and durability of my old NAD made the 725BEE an easy choice. I didn't want to mix an AV system with my music and so opted for a traditional receiver. The 725BEE is incredibly smooth, clear and distortion free to my ear at least. Even though it's rated at "only" 50W, I can't turn the volume above 1/4 of the way before I get blasted out of the room. I've paired the NAD with new Klipsch RF82 II floor standing speakers and all I can say is -- I'm happy. Thanks NAD. I recommend it.
    Pros:
Clear clean sound, plenty of power, simple controls
    Cons:
Need to buy optional NAD IPD dock to play iPod through the system. (MP3 players have a plug in front for hookup.)

    NAD

Written By BobF, Fort Worth TX on Saturday, October 01, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced a Rotel RX975 that clunked out. I thought the Rotel was a great receiver. The NAD sounds better. Better clarity and range. Picking up things off recordings I have not heard before. NAD should put metal knobs on the front. My wife and I listen to classical and jazz. This receiver delivers great sound on a wide range of piano, orchestral, and chamber music. I particularly like the clear neutral sound on jazz recordings. Pristine Classical's "Kind of Blue" is dynamite. Streaming audio through an Airport Express and the receiver takes care of business.
