Our take on the Clarion CZ509

Today's drivers expect more from a car stereo than music and news. Clarion built Bluetooth® connectivity into their CZ509 CD receiver, so you can drive safely while you stay plugged into the outside world.

Hands-free phone calls with Bluetooth
Get in your car, and your compatible phone synchs up automatically with the CZ509. When a call comes in, the receiver mutes the music, allowing you to speak through the included visor-mount microphone and carry on the conversation over your car's speakers. Plus, you can stream music wirelessly from your phone straight into the Clarion — no adapter needed.

iPod® control and more
Plug your iPod into the receiver's rear USB input, and you'll be able to use the receiver's controls to run your iPod, as well as view song titles on its 10-character, 2-line display. The BBE MP audio enhancement feature adds life to your music files by restoring frequencies lost during compression.

You'll also find an auxiliary input on the front panel that'll accept audio from a satellite radio, MP3 player, or any other portable. In addition, the CZ509 works with a Clarion satellite radio tuner or CD changer.

Excellent sound
Go ahead and turn up the built-in amplifier — it'll give you plenty of clean power. You can use the 3-band equalizer to customize the three EQ presets — a great feature if you listen to a wide variety of music. If you're looking for maximum sound quality, three sets of preamp outputs make it easy to add outboard amplifiers, and you can use the subwoofer volume control for fingertip bass adjustments. Adjust the built-in high- and low-pass filters to get maximum efficiency from your speaker system.

Convenience is key
You can also add an adapter that enables your vehicle's steering wheel audio controls to run the CZ509. Clarion includes a wireless remote so your passengers can change entertainment while you concentrate on the road ahead.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Bluetooth note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Display Features

Ergonomic Face Design: The Clarion CZ509 features an easy-to-use rotary volume control and easy-to-read illuminated buttons on the face which are laid out in an asymmetrical design to place the most used features within a specific area for ease of use and less user distraction. The front panel 3.5mm auxiliary input on the CZ509 makes it easy to connect external audio devices.

Flip-Down Face With Detachable Face Security: This unit features a fold-down face with detachable dace security. The unit's face manually flips down so you and load and eject your CD discs. When the unit's face is folded down, the face can be detached to deter theft. A face-fixing clip is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. The unit comes with a hard plastic face case to store the receiver's faceplate when detached.

Digital LCD Display: The two-line digital LCD display, with black background and white characters, on the CZ509 features an adjustable contrast (1-16) which allows numbers and characters to be displayed clearly in virtually all lighting conditions.

Illumination Dimmer: The receiver's display automatically dims to a preset brightness when the vehicle's headlights are turned on. The wiring harness includes an orange/white lead that should be connected to the vehicle's parking light circuit in order for the dimmer feature to operate.

Screen Saver: This unit is provided with a Screen Saver function which allows you to show various kinds of patterns and characters in the operation status indication area of the display in a random order. You can turn this function on or off. If the button operation is performed with the screen saver function on, the operation display corresponding to the button operation is shown for about 30 seconds and the display returns to the screen saver display.

Message Information: You can enter a message up to 30 characters long in the unit's memory and display it as the receiver's screen saver.

Title Entry: Titles up to 10 characters long can be stored in memory and displayed for CD, CD changer, Radio stations and TV stations. The number of titles that can be entered for each mode are as follows - 50 disc titles for CD Mode, 20 station titles for TV mode, 30 station titles for Radio Mode, and 100 disc titles for Changer mode.

Audio Section

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the CZ509 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the CZ509 are as follows:

  • CEA2006 Specs: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
  • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 watts total)

Amp Canceller: If you choose to connect the receiver to external amplifiers, you can turn off the built-in amplifier for better sound quality.

Three 2-Volt Preamp Outputs: The CZ509 is equipped with a pair of 2-volt front, rear and subwoofer preamp outputs. You can fade between the front and rear preamp outputs, while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Built-in Crossovers: The headunit's built-in high pass crossovers let your front and rear speakers reproduce the proper frequencies (60, 90, or 120Hz or Full-Range) for natural sound and efficient power handling. A low pass filter with selectable frequencies of 60, 90 or 120Hz, coupled with a Subwoofer Level Control of -6 to +6 allow full adjustment and control of a subwoofer for maximum performance.

Beat EQ With Parametric Equalization: In addition to providing 3 preset equalization patterns (Excite, Impact, B-Boost), BeatEQ lets you freely customize the level and range of the bass, midrange and treble portions of each pattern with a 3-band parametric equalizer.

  • B-Boost: Bass is emphasized from -3 to +3.
  • Impact: Bass and treble are emphasized from -3 to +3.
  • Excite: Bass, treble and midrange are emphasized from -3 to +3.
  • Off: No sound effect.
  • Custom: Adjusts the bass, midrange, and treble independently from -7 to +7. You can set the effected bass frequency to 50, 100, or 200 Hz; the effected midrange frequency to 500Hz, 1kHz, or 2kHz; the effected treble frequency to 5k, 10k, or 15k. The Q-factor for each frequency (Bass, Midrange, and Treble) can be set to 0.7, 1,0 1.4, or 2.0.

Magna Bass EX (Extend): The Magna Bass Extend feature does not adjust the low frequencies like the normal sound adjustment function, but emphasizes the deep bass frequencies to provide you with a dynamic sound. This circuit boosts bass at an ultra-low frequency of about 50Hz, creating a rich, deep, defined bass rather than the muddy, booming bass of a standard loudness control. What is more, boost levels are dependent on the system volume, resulting in balanced system response and dynamic bass reproduction.

BBE MP (Minimized Polynomial Non-Linear Saturation): By restoring the harmonics that are lost during digital compression of MP3 and WMA audio files, BBE MP reproduces the warmth, details and nuances of sound that you would otherwise miss. Effective for digital audio files and CDs.

CD Playback

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: The unit can play MP3, WMA, and AAC files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs using ISO9660 Level 1 or 2, Joliet, Romeo, or Apple ISO formats. The player can recognize up to 8 hierarchical levels, 255 files per folder and 510 total files. Bit rates for MP3 and AAC are 8-320 kbps, plus VBR (Variable Bit Rates). Bit rates for WMA are 8-320 kbps. This unit is compatible with, and will display MP3 and WMA ID3 tags up to 64 characters.

Note: Tracks purchased at an iTune Music store, and copyright-protected files cannot be played.

Disc-In-Play-Function: This feature allows you to turn the power to the unit "on" and start playing the disc automatically when the disc is inserted even if the unit is not powered up, as long as the ignition key is turned to the "on" or "acc" position.

Top Function: The Top Function resets the CD player to the first track of a CD-audio disc. In the case of an MP3/WMA/AAC disc, the first track of a folder being played will be reset.

Scan Play: This function allows you to locate and play the first 10 seconds of all the tracks recorded on a CD or the first 10 seconds of the first track of all the folders on an MP3/WMA disc.

Last Position Memory: If you turn off the unit while a disc is playing, it will resume playback at the stopping point when it is turned on again.

Auto Reload: When a CD is ejected and left sticking out of the CD slot for 15 seconds, the unit automatically reloads the CD to protect if from damage.

Mounting: For proper CD playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

Note: When ISO-DIN mounting, you will need to use your vehicle radio's original factory ISO screws.

AM/FM Tuner

AM/FM Tuner: The Clarion CZ509 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with a total of 24 presets (18FM/6AM). You can store these presets manually or automatically. The headunit also offers manual or seek tuning, as well as preset station scan.

Instant Station Recall (ISR): You can store one radio station in Instant Station Recall (ISR) memory and recall it from any mode (except Power Off). Once the ISR station has been recalled, you cannot tune to another station without first disengaging the ISR function. You can, however, switch to another source.

External Device Connection

The Clarion CZ509 features built-in Bluetooth technology for wireless connection with Bluetooth enabled mobile phones, PDAs and MP3 Players. A wired microphone is supplied to carry on your side of the conversation while your car's speakers are used to hear the other person. The CZ509 will also be able to control basic playback features such a Pause, Track Selection, Fast Forward, and Reverse. Up to 5 phones and/or audio devices can be paired to this unit (only one will work at a time).

Note: The Clarion CZ509 is not compatible with all Bluetooth enabled phones or audio players. Check Clarion.com for complete list of compatible phones and players.

USB Port: The headunit features a rear panel USB port on a 41" pigtail that allows you to connect and play USB Mass Storage devices loaded with MP3, WMA, and AAC files. During Play Mode you can control the following playback functions of your iPod: Skip Tracks, Fast-forward/backward, Pause, Repeat, Random and Cancel. The iPod Menu Mode allows you to select music for playback from your iPod by category (Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Genre, or Composer). Awesome unit!!!

Written By Matthew, Excelsior Springs, MO on Saturday, March 06, 2010

Excellent unit if you are concerned with bluetooth connectivity and IPOD controls. I recieve calls and don't even have to touch a button, with the external mic. everyone else can hear you loud and clear. With my Ipod touch I just simply plug it into the USB and put it in my gloove box to hide and recharge, control everything from the head unit.

Great Head Unit - Lots of Features

Written By Franklin, Atlanta, GA on Thursday, February 04, 2010

I bought this unit because it had bluetooth A2DP audio streaming and it has surpassed my expectations. Once you get the hang of the menu navigation, this unit is a pleasure to use. I have a palm pre connected bluetooth playing pandora with an iPod touch in the glovebox connected USB. The iPod controls are pretty good as well. Crutchfield supplied me with all the documentation and parts needed for an easy installation. Highly recommended.

User interface is not intuitive

Written By Michael, Chicago on Wednesday, December 09, 2009

I WANT to like this radio better, but I just don't. I've given it 3 months. It
took me 2 months to feel comfortable with the user interface. It sounds good and
has all of the functionality I was looking for, but as others have alluded to,
the user interface is so poor that I cannot justify more than 3 stars. A 10 year
old could have created more intuitive controls than Clarion did (and also
written a better user manual). Not only are the controls clunky and not
intuitive, but they are not consistent from the radio to the remote. For
example, the ">>|" button on the radio itself has different functionality than
the ">>|" button on the remote. Also, the AM band gets poor reception (some
stations constantly have a high-pitched tone).

Once you get it set up to your liking, the radio itself works OK (except for
AM). It sounds good, the Bluetooth works with my BlackBerry (although I can't
figure out how to sync my address book properly), the XM mini tuner add-on
sounds good, and my Zune also sounds great using the Aux input.

The only other complaint I have is that when Bluetooth connects automatically,
it changes the input to Bluetooth, interrupting what you're listening to. No
biggie, but other car stereos I have used don't do this.

One feature I like a lot is the "ISR" (Instant Station Recall), which allows you
to change to a specified station by pressing one button regardless of what input
you're currently on. Comes in handy when switching to Traffic on the 8s.

Kinda dissappointing for a Clarion.

Written By Robby, Chicago, IL on Sunday, December 06, 2009

First of all, I 100% agree with the review by Anoka MN on Friday, October 09,
2009. This unit (CZ509) is absolutely ridiculous as far as the menus AND more
importantly, the placement of the controls. To navigate to the next track you
literally have to take your eyes off the road. I've had this unit for nearly 6
months now! I would use the remote more often, but there is no function on the
remote to change folders. You can't even have the time on the display while
displaying the song title. Or, if you're in Random or Repeat mode, the only way
you know it the next time you get in your car is if you remember it. There's
nothing in the display that says you're playing in shuffle or random mode.
I guess those are my only cons, but for me are very important. Ease of use.
The features are all excellent! Once again Clarion has given us exactly what it
promised.
Great amp power and great general sound through the factory speakers. I've used
three phones on this stereo and they all connect silently.
This is a quality made product. I just feel that Clarion skimped on the easiest
of the features: ease of use. I would have given this product a 3.5 if I could
have, but being comfortable and ease of use are almost as important and quality;
especially when you're driving on the road. As usual Crutchfield gave me
remarkable service. I trust Crutchfield online ordering as much as I would
trust walking into a department store and making my purchase. Really.

Clarion CZ509

Written By Gerry, Tennessee on Wednesday, November 04, 2009

I am not going to pretend that I am a great audio buff. What I am is a regular guy who enjoys good sound from his music while traveling. The CZ509 does just that! This has got to be the best sound receiver I have ever had. The many optoins the receiver gives allows the listener to tweek his (or her) stereo to sound the way they enjoy listening to their music. Being 53 y.o. now I am not really into the "LOUD" BOOMING that most kids enjoy today. (But I remember those days when I was young and I had to have a loud one) But I can tell you that this system can bring that to their audio sytem. What I enjoy, (and always have) is hearing the COMPLETE sound of the recording, from the highest high, to the lowest low. From the sound of the symbles to the deep bass and with clarity. There are a few things to get around with system, you need to read the manual to get the most out of it. But if your like me and truly want to hear your music like you never have before, then for me it is worth the effort and time it will take to get what you want. For me if you are going to spend this kind of money you should want to know everything it can do, take the time and read the manual I assure you, you will be glad you did.

The good, the bad, and the ugly truth.

Written By , Anoka MN on Friday, October 09, 2009

First let me say that ordering from Cruchfield was the best decision I made. All of the right parts for the install were included with great directions, I even made a call to tech support at 9 pm and they answered my questions right away.
Here is my opinion on the Clarion CZ509; I would not buy this stereo again. I like all of the features the CZ509 has, rear USB, 6 channel presets on the front panel, etc, that's why I bought it. However I truly cannot stand the navigation of the menus. The way you have to go through all the sub menus and settings to get to what you looking for is frustrating and over complicated. I challenge anyone to set a custom eq setting on this stereo. The display is poor. I don't like the fact that you cannot see the clock when the ipod is connected and you want to see the song titles. Its either song titles or clock, not both. Very bad on that one. I do like the pause button feature but all the buttons are small and hard to read. Another big negative for me is the balance/fader should be easier to find. I like to move the sound to the front when my kids are in the back seat but I will not even attempt to find those controls while driving. The bluetooth does not work with my phone, I should have checked first but I would have thought a major brand name phone with a major carrier would be a no brainer.
My overall rating is still 3 stars because it was such an improvement in sound and features of my stock stereo.

Sounds great, works with iPhone 3GS

Written By ScottW, NW Washington on Monday, October 05, 2009

Installed in 2002 4runner for use with iPhone 3GS running OS 3.1

Pros: Great sound with stock Toyota 6-speaker system. Once paired and set for auto-connect, Bluetooth supports music streaming and hands-free calls from iPhone. Whether connected via BT or USB, music is automatically muted in favor of hands-free phone operation, then resumed when call ends. Music from iPhone is excellent via USB or BT, and no dropouts or distortion on BT. Calls can be answered/ended via cz509 front panel or iPhone. Charges iphone via USB. External mic works well. Has preset buttons! Rear USB connection makes for "cleaner" installation.

Cons: Had to trim/file dash trim by 1/32" above radio to allow flip-down face to work. First-time BT pairing is complex and incorrectly documented in poorly translated manual. NOT fully compatible with iPhone, causing "Device not made for iphone...turn on airplane mode" warning everytime you connect to USB (annoying, but everything works fine after dismissing the warning, plus you won't see it if always using BT instead of USB). Overall, settings/adjustments could be more friendly -- but this is mainly a first-time setup issue, and an issue common to most multi-function head units.

Crutchfield, as usual, was completely reliable and delivered everything needed quickly and complete.

Great service, good price, decent radio

Written By , Ohio on Friday, October 02, 2009

I recently installed this in our 2004 saturn Vue.

Crutchfield customer/tech support was awesome. I would never NOT buy
something from here.

The install was very easy with the instructions given from CRUTCHFIELD.

The instructions for installing this radio (from Clarion) were horrible ENGRISH
and took a lot of head scratching. (tip for the novice like me... the 2 yellow
wires must BOTH have power. I connected them together and then to the
yellow wire on the harness)

Same goes for the instructions for use. I haven't even explored ALL of the
features yet only cause I fear the 30-45 minutes it's going to take for me to
figure out a function. Once learned though, navigation is pretty simple.

My biggest gripe is that my Verizon cell phone (Voyager Titanium, LG VX10000s)
will not auto-pair with this unit. It will pair, but it takes a few minutes and a
lot of button pressing. However, when I exit the vehicle and get back in, no
auto pairing is done.

Yes, auto pair is turned on on the phone.
Yes, Auto-con is turned on on the HU.

In fact, another phone auto-paired just fine when tested.

Verizon blames their software and their lockdown of OBEX on certain phones.
This explaination from them is the main reason I did not return the HU for a
different one... thinking just about any HU will behave the same way.

For the price, it's worth it. If it were any more costly, I would have probably
gone with the Kenwood KDC-MP342U and bluetooth unit for that.

CZ509 w/bluetooth

Written By Michael, Kingsport. TN on Sunday, September 13, 2009

I installed this deck in my 08 Tundra Double Cab. It took about an 1.5 hours. The step by step instructions you guys sent made it a breeze. What took so long was soldering the stereo harness to the adapter harness. The installation kit looks great! I bought this deck mainly for the bluetooth and it works great with my LG Chocolate 3. I have the auto connect feature turned on and when I get in my truck you can see the bluetooth icon come up on the display letting you know you're connected with no interruption to whatever you're listening to. I had to call tech support to get help linking my phone to the stereo and they were great! Thanks!
