Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Sony CDX-GT660UP

by Ken Nail

Sony's CDX-GT660UP CD receiver puts an impressive set of visual and audio delights at your fingertips. It'll match its display and button colors to your dash or the beat of your music, and gives you a variety of musical options — including in-dash control of PANDORA® Internet radio.

Tap into online music
If you're a fan of PANDORA®, you don't have to be told how cool it is to enjoy the music you love wherever there's an Internet connection. Connect your iPhone to the front USB input, and you'll be able to control PANDORA® from this Sony. Listen, rate, create — you'll have complete control.

You'll enjoy easy access to your iPod® or iPhone's music library, with Quick BrowZer, Jump, Zappin', and other Sony tools on hand to help you find the tunes you want, right away.

Dynamic Color Illuminator
It's fun to match the color of your new receiver to your dash lighting, but Sony's Dynamic Color Illuminator goes one better. Its Sound Synchronization feature changes the display colors to the beat of your music. It's a cool way to spice up your late-night cruising.

Awesome audio controls
Sony's Advanced Sound Engine offers sound quality that's several notches above most factory radios, with excellent dynamic range, stereo separation, and fidelity. You'll also find some nice touches like the Automatic Level Optimizer, which continually balances the output of your sources so the volume stays even from song to song.

The EQ7 7-band equalizer gives you lots of options for adjusting the sound to match your car. Sony's DM+ Advanced circuitry restores the details that are lost when you compress your digital music, so you enjoy the best possible sound from your MP3, WMA, or AAC files. And you can sit in the perfect stereo "sweet spot" by using the Listening Position time alignment tool.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Sony, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

      • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Peak Power Output: 52 watts x 4-channels (208 total watts)

Three 2-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Sony CDX-GT660UP is equipped with 2-volt Front, Rear, & Sub pre-amp outputs giving you the ability to connect to external amplifiers to your car stereo system.

Subwoofer Controls: The unit's subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The subwoofer preamp output features a low pass filter with a selectable cut-off frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the low-pass crossover. You can even adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments. In addition, you can select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.

High-Pass Filter: The front & rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the high-pass crossover.

Advanced Sound Engine: Sony's Advanced Sound Engine creates an ideal in-car sound field with digital signal processing. Advanced Sound Engine contains the following features: EQ7, Listening Position, DM+ Advanced, Rear Bass Enhancer, & Dynamic Loudness.

      • EQ7: You can select an equalizer curve from eight music types - Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, Custom, or Off (Flat). The Custom EQ7 mode allows  you to make  your own equalizer settings. You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) of seven different frequency bands - Band1 (63Hz), Band2 (160Hz), Band3 (400Hz), Band4 (1kHz), Band5 (2.5khz), Band6 (6.3khz), and Band7 (16.0kHz).
      • Listening Position: This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position, and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it wherever you sit in the car. You can choose from Front Right, Front Left, Front Center, or Off. You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far
      • RBE (Rear Bass Enhancer): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.
      • Dynamic Loudness: Dynamic Loudness refers to compensating for volume level & signal gain.
      • DM+ Advanced: DM+ Advanced improves digitally compressed sound by restoring high frequencies lost in the compression process (works only for USB).

Automatic Level Optimizer: Automatic Level Optimizer analyzes each track's playback level & adjusts the output level to optimize transitions between tracks & sources.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

      Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The head unit comes supplied with an IR wireless remote control (RM-X211) for easy operation. The included wireless remote allows you to control the basic functions of the Sony head unit while keeping your eyes on the road.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Well this was my first car stereo system I have installed. The installation was very easy to do and took about a day to hook up. The radio came with every thing I needed to install. The radio and speaker I purchased about two months ago have the best sound quality you can get for the money. I would recommend this radio to any one who wants a quality stereo for their car or truck
      Pros:
easy to use easy to install looks great high quality radio
      Cons:
      none

      Love the options!

Written By Jesse S., Spokane, WA on Sunday, May 12, 2013

Over all I love this stereo in my 2000 Focus ZX3 with after market speakers and infinity basslink 10" sub. Ive owned it for over a year. easy to use, easy buttons to touch and turn, lots of options for a fairly advanced audio set up. I will buy this for my second car (Pontiac Grand Prix)
      Pros:
-Turn your rear speakers into "subs" -LPF and HPF slopes and multiple freq. -7 band EQ -Lots of colors to match your mood or car color -browse iPod with stereo or the device, you choose -select your location in the car for a better soundstage effect.
      Cons:
I've noticed a couple glitches or "problems" foremost is when my car is only running off battery (ignition mode) and the volume is up pretty loud the stereo will power off and start back up. It's like it's got a circuit breaker built in. It's frustrating because sometimes at parties I don't want exhaust fumes.

Very good unit. Easy install with the master sheet provided. Would definitely recommend this unit.
      Pros:
Great sound. And a lot of customizable features.
      Cons:
Kinda difficult to configure sound, color, ect. Had to refer to the paperwork included on more than one occasion.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

One of the things that drew me to this unit was the 7-band EQ. Not many budget units have that. I like being able to customize the sound profile. I just wish it had more than one custom profile slot. The multitude of colors is cool too. Navigating to find music stored on the ipod took a little getting used to. And the DM+ feature that enhances highly compressed music has it's pros and cons. It can make some tracks sound fuller and richer and some it makes them sound tinny. Overall, though I am pleased with this purchase.
      Pros:
Good sound quality and features in a budget unit.
      Cons:
Not as easy to navigate to the music you want to find as in a double DIN touch screen unit.

      Pretty Decent Product

Written By Anonymous, Cleveland on Thursday, April 25, 2013

Way better than my (Mazda) factory system was, but it's still probably outdated, by now. There's no bluetooth phone or streaming. Navigation of the USB devices (thumb-drive, iPod and iPhone) is nearly impossible, especially while driving. Forget about searching. And the shuffle only works in one folder which is a bummer. It has some pretty sweet programming to make the most of the factory speakers. Sounds good.
      Pros:
Love the simulated subwoofer in the rear speakers. Charges devices hooked up to USB, and plays music from them.
      Cons:
No bluetooth, no phone connectivity, USB cord comes out of the front, tough to navigate music on USB devices (especially when driving)

      Pretty good - not great

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall this is pretty good. Sounds good, and feature set is complete. Main complaints are related to user interface and equalizer (the custom 7-band EQ was the main reason I bought this unit). The EQ turnover points are not displayed anywhere (you just have to know what they are from the manual) which is annoying, and the EQ adjustment is only +/-6dB each band; this can be problematic when trying to correct for larger problems. I'm not crazy about the selection of turnover points on the equalizer; In the lower octaves the turnover points jump from 160Hz to 400Hz, leaving out the critical 250 - 300Hz area where most annoying car resonances seem to fall.

The display is especially ugly, and the text characters are large and blocky (and all upper-case), so unable to display much info without scrolling (a pioneer that a put in another of our cars is much more attractive, and informative).

I don't really like the fact that you have to fold down the hinged front panel to insert/eject a CD; this means you have to disconnect your front-panel USB device to put a CD in - kind of a pain when you're trying to drive.

Unit sounds good, and aside from these issues it provides pretty good value for money.

      Pros:
Sounds good, decent value for money, good feature set
      Cons:
Hard to use, lousy ergonomics, must fold down front panel to insert/eject CD, Equalizer interface could use some work.

      Great Deck

Written By Weston, Monte Vista, CO on Friday, April 19, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've bought this deck for the two line display, a built in clock, and the color changing display. I have not been disappointed with it's performance in any way. Installation was a breeze with the provided kit. Great tuning options to allow for best possible sound. This was put into a 2004 Ralliart with the 6 speaker infinity system stock. Since my car has all four speakers powered by the infinity amp I had to purchase a different connector, fortunately this is hardly a setback.

Other thoughts: the low frequency crossover cannot be disabled, as a result the bass from this deck doesn't hit as hard as the stock one. In most vehicles that's a good thing but in mine it wasn't, but hey that's what under-seat sub boxes are for right?
      Pros:
Everything but the low frequency crossover.
      Cons:
      Cannot disable low frequency crossover.

I have no complaints about this product. There are many features to customize the sound and display of this head unit. I am extremely happy with my purchase. The main reason i was drawn to this headhunt was because it allows Ipod control. If i ever have to replace a stock head unit I will go straight back to this one.

      Quality Stereo

Amazing upgrade over my stock Monsoon tape (yes, that's embarrassing) deck w/10 cd changer. Don't know why GM would put a tape deck in a 2001 Camaro SS, but I digress. This Sony unit is an amazing value, sounds great, and is easy to install. It has totally revived my stock speakers to the point it almost sounds like I replaced the speakers as well! I love the color customization and the USB/iPod interface. Great stereo, you won't be disappointed.
      Pros:
      Pretty much everything.....
      Cons:
      Steep learning curve....but not insurmountable.

Great Stereo, sound, and looks. This is the third one I've bought for different cars that we have had over a couple of years. Never have had any problems. It puts out great sound and looks very nice. Not much more that I can say about it. Try it, you'll like it.
      Pros:
Price, Sound, looks, quality, ease of use.
      Cons:
Have to read the instructions to menu through the features. Not really a con though is it? Easy to understand...

This is an excellent component. It has all the features I wanted at an affordable price. It was easy to install and has fine tunability with the equalizer. It produces excellent sound quality. I would recommend this unit.
      Pros:
Satellite-ready, Ipod controls, USB port, equalizer. Good installation and operation manuals.
      Cons:
Controls are not intuitive. This gadget requires study of the manual to operate, so it is impossible for someone who doesn't know the unit to operate it. It also means that it is dangerous to operate while driving, what with all the inconsiderate drivers on the roads. The website claims it fits the cars I purchased it for, but not without the 1 inch spacer that makes it protrude from the instrument panel. It looks like a psychedelic wart sticking out there, scrolling through those 35000 colors.

      Disappointing for a SONY

I bought this unit primarily for playing mp3's through the usb port in the front. Mp3's play with horrible distortion through the port. I thought I had blown speakers but then it sounds great if I play the radio. I'll be looking to try a different brand.
      Pros:
Looks great and has a ton of nice features.
      Cons:
Good looks and cool features are meaningless it the sound is bad.

Installed in my wife's car. Installation went smooth all THREE times I did it. I installed three times because I thought I had messed something up. When lowering the faceplate to use the CD the main knob hits the trim and barely lowers enough for clearance to insert a CD. You have to contort your hand/fingers to push the button to eject the CD. I didn't mess up, just poor design. And don't even try remove and put the faceplate back on, incredibly hard to align just right.
      Pros:
Wife hardly ever uses CD's and doesn't remove the faceplate.
      Cons:
      Poor design.
