What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Infinity 1260w

by Dominic Devito

An Infinity Reference subwoofer makes every deep note of your music count. Whether you listen to jazz, rock, hip-hop, country, or all of the above, you'll hear and feel satisfying bass with this sub in your car.

The 12" Reference 1260w offers a classy, no-nonsense look, with a high-gloss polypropylene cone that's accurate and hard-hitting. The durable large-roll rubber surround provides smooth, extended excursion with reduced distortion so you get impressive bass performance.

The 1260w's unique motor structure cuts down on the mounting depth, and this sub works in sealed, ported, and bandpass enclosures so you get bass the way you want it. And since you want your investment to last, the 1260w features plenty of internal cooling to protect the sub's inner workings and keep it performing at its peak.

    Features
    Enclosure Compatibility

    Features

High-efficiency Polypropylene Woofer Cone: This lightweight and popular material is used to ensure maximum woofer efficiency. The benefit is high output with modest amplifier power.

Large-roll Rubber Surround: The large-roll rubber surround provides optimum cone-edge suspension and absorbs distortion that may travel up the cone edge, ensuring clean, tight bass.

Proprietary Basket: The unique in-board motor structure reduces the overall mounting depth, without limiting enclosure options.

Vented Polepiece: The vented polepiece provides additional cooling of the motor structure, thus increasing power handling.

Progressive Spider: The subwoofer uses a progressive spider, which provides better control at excursion limits than more commonly used linear spiders. The result is reduced distortion at high output levels.

    Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: Infinity recommends a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of 1.25 cu/ft. Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle more power, and provide more accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box Volume: Infinity recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 2.0 cu/ft with one 4" diameter x 10" long port. Ported (or vented) enclosures provide better efficiency in the 40-50Hz range, and are suitable for use with small amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of sound quality at low frequencies (40Hz and below), and control.

Bandpass Box Volume: Infinity recommends a bandpass enclosure with an internal volume of 2.25 cu/ft. The enclosure has a sealed chamber volume of 1.0 cu/ft and a ported chamber volume of 1.25 cu/ft with two 4" diameter x 8" long ports. Bandpass enclosures often provide the most output available from any amplifier and subwoofer combination at the expense of sonic accuracy. If sheer SPL is desired most, a bandpass enclosure is recommended.

Awsome speakers! Look good sound good. Wish the frequency response was around 20 Hz VS 23 Hz on the low end. Other than that the high price. So my only complaint is the price.
    Pros:

    Great Starter Sub

Written By B In Cali, North California on Wednesday, March 28, 2012

I have a 1999 VW Passat, which has a sizable trunk. I'm running the sub off of a Rockford Fosgate R500-1 Monoblock. I have it in a 1 cubic feet sealed box. And I must say, the sound is great for a starter sub. I was looking at Focal, Hertz, JL, and even the Kappas because I've read that they specialize in sound quality, but I went ahead and saved some money and tried out this Reference, and its an amazing sub. The sound quality is great, and if you have the option, you can tweak the sound you want with your deck and amp. I have a Kenwood deck, and I usually run it on Bast Boost Level 1, Bass turned to -3, and the subwoofer level to 1 and it still sounds great. Yes, bass turned to -3. The sub is very flexible, it can shake your mirror, or even shift it, or it can produce a nice resonant bass without distortion. I don't like trunk rattling bass, I like quality that "I" myself can enjoy, not for the neighborhood to scream about.

And its not an eyesore. JL W3 was a nice alternative, but the bass was too boomy even when tweaked at the car audio shop, and its a plain sub, just black...The Focals are classy, but the Infinity Reference is one of the greatest looking subs in my opinion. Its the same as the Kappa, it just can't handle as much power as a Kappa, and the cone is made out of slightly different material. If you are thinking about a Kappa, save some cash and try this one first. With the right set up, you shouldn't be dissapointed!
    Pros:
Great looking, boomy bass or sound quality bass, flexible, good price, 1 cubic foot boxes are easy to find and cheap
    Cons:
Make sure you have the right box, a good deck to customize your music, and an amp w/ a gain and bass volume switch in order for you to tweak your sound, or else this will just sound like a regular whatever brand sub

Greate sub-woofer by Harman Kardon Infinity

Written By RuL, Gurabo, PR on Monday, February 27, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a basic Toyota Rav4 2011 and upgrade the factory radio and speakers. The reciever is the JVC Kdr-520 with bluetooth adapter included, the seakers are 4 Infinity Kappas 629.62i, I let the two factory tweeters that sound good. Have all hooked to a Firefly 5 channels amp and a 7 band equalizer from BassInferno. I have a Sony sub-woofer but want to get an Infinity sub to match the voices. I am very proud with the good bass punch this sub-woofer produce. It looks beatiful on my Rav4 back compartmen, every time I open the back door take some time seeying my sub-woofer. I recommend that for SUV or some similar cars using a sealed box, it give you the clarity of bass necessary to enjoy the music. But on cars that use a ported one, because it is in a closed space then the sub need to produce more punch to you enjoy it. In conclution I give five stars to Harman Kardon Infinity Sub-Woofer Series and also the Kappas Series. I feel like get my home theater to my Rav4 and get what I want fidelity, no loud music (sometimes on good songs of the 80's I get up the volumen, but the rest use a moderate volume). For all this I hightly recommend this Infinity Sub-Woofer to anyone.
    Pros:
Good punch bass, prety deep sound, very good construction and a beautiful appearance.
    Cons:
I only have the complaint that Harman Kardon on this Reference Infinity Series do not use a good connection like biding spots, it use flat metal connections of the same size. I was a little dissapointmen with that and get the plugs connector to this size was a pain. But the connector get tight and you can be sure that them wil not be disconnected from the sub.

    Another Great Infinity Speaker

Written By Steve D, Eureka, CA on Wednesday, September 07, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have one of these subwoofers installed in a compact sealed box. The woofer has relatively tight bass for a 12-inch driver, and a minimal amount of boominess. In other words, I love it! The sound is really smooth and clean, and there is plenty of punch there to remind yourself that you have a subwoofer in your car.

I am powering the Infinity with the back two channels of my Sound Ordnance M- 4075 amplifier, and the woofer is taking everything I am throwing at it with ease. Like all Infinity speakers, the sound is top notch and stands out with the best of the best. Another great value from Crutchfied, and we do appreciate it!

So after 5 years running hard the surround separated from the cone. Weak point in the sub. Other than that great product good sound. Maybe the new models have addressed this weakness...

Replaced a 25 year old Rockford sub and am very pleased

Written By Renthorin, Michigan on Saturday, May 21, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought a Rockford 10" sub back in 1986 and it was going strong...until a BBQ propane tank in the hatch rolled over and killed it. RIP Rockford Sub.

Enter the NEW sub : - ) I was looking for a 10" sub so I could use my existing box but things sure have changed since the mid 80's. What took a 1.25 cubic foot box back then now take a .6 cubic foot box. The subs that wanted that size enclosure are all 12's these days, but obviously won't fit in a 10" opening.

Seeing as I wasn't going to be using the existing box, I upgraded to a 12" sub. Needing a new box, I looked for a sub/box combo that would complement each other and got this box to go with the sub: Sound OrdnanceT Bass Bunker - Sealed single 12" sub woofer enclosure (Model BB12-125S).

The opening on the box was EXACTLY the same size as this sub requires so that was another selling point. The sub went easily into the box and sealed up well.

Now to the sound. This sub picks up where the Rockford left off and adds some control. The bass is tighter and it is definitely making better use of my 300/600 class D amp that drives it. Not muddy at all.

The quality on the sub is first rate. The magnet is HUGE (size does matter) and the construction is top drawer.

    I have no complaints. : - )

NOTE: if you purchase the 12" waffle grill to protect this sub from flying objects it won't fit. The grill is the exact diameter of the sub so it sits on top : - (

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This subwoofer is far beyond my expections. I had owned a mtx audio and I was speaking to Dolly in regards to the sound quiality and had mentioned to me about the sound difference between the 2 and I am so glad that I took her advice and purchased the 1260. Many thanks again to your wonderful staff for the knowledge and expereince with the electronics that I have purchased with you is mind blowing and it is nice to know that there is an establishment that still treats the consumer with respect and knowledge. thank-you once again.

    Infinity 1260w

Written By Cindy, Battle Creek, MI on Saturday, July 18, 2009

I bought this sub the other day for my 97 Honda Accord. I only got one, as I only wanted to add some bass, not make it the centerpiece for my system. This sub does just that and more. It produces clean, faithful bass and looks good too. I recommend this 100%.
