Alpine

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Our take on the Alpine MRP-F250

by Ken Nail
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Outstanding audio performance — you expect it when the amp is an Alpine. Alpine's V-Power amplifiers supply the high level of performance you want without shaking loose too much of your hard-earned cash.

The versatile MRP-F250 4-channel amplifier can take on a variety of roles in your system. Drive your front and rear speakers in 4-channel mode, or switch to 2-channel mode to power a couple of small subs. Want the best of both worlds? Use channels 1 and 2 to power full-range speakers, and bridge channels 3 and 4 to power a sub. Any way you use it, this amp will impress you with its strong sonic performance.

Variable high-pass/low-pass filters let you adjust the frequency output for either full-range speakers or a sub. If you're driving a subwoofer and using the low-pass crossover, a subsonic filter eliminates inaudible, ultra-low bass notes for cleaner output.

The amp's rugged construction ensures reliable performance. A heavy machined-metal heatsink keeps the internal parts cool and distortion low. Gold-plated screw terminals resist corrosion that can degrade signal performance.

Highlights:

  • 4-channel car amplifier
  • 40 watts RMS x 4 at 4 ohms (50 watts RMS x 4 at 2 ohms)
  • 100 watts RMS x 2 bridged output at 4 ohms (4-ohm stable in bridged mode)
  • 2-, 3-, or 4-channel output
  • variable high-pass/low-pass filters (50-400 Hz, 12 dB/octave)
  • tuned Bass EQ (12 dB bass boost at 50 Hz for channels 3 & 4)
  • subsonic filter (15 Hz, channels 3 & 4 only)
  • MOSFET power supply
  • CEA-2006 compliant
  • STAR Topology (minimizes internal noise and prevents ground interference)
  • speaker- and preamp-level inputs

  • gold-plated screw terminals
  • fuse rating: 15A x 2
  • 8-gauge power and ground leads recommended — wiring and hardware not included with amplifier
  • 11-1/4"W x 2-3/8"H x 9-9/16"D

Features
Inputs and Outputs

Features

Power Supply: The MRP-F250 amplifier's power supply uses MOSFETs to convert DC battery voltage to the higher DC voltages needed for high power. It supplies positive and negative voltages around 0V, rather than around 6V as with conventional single-polarity power supplies. The result is higher power levels and a dynamic range wider by as much as 10dB.

Gain Controls: This amp has independent front and rear channel gain controls.

Crossovers: Both front and rear channels have independently selectable high-pass and low-pass variable 50-400 Hz crossovers with a slope of 12dB/octave.

Subsonic Filter: This amp utilizes a 15Hz subsonic filter to eliminate super low frequencies that can rob power and damage speakers. The subsonic filter operates only for the rear channels, and is engaged when the rear channel crossover is set to "low-pass" operation.

Bass EQ: The Bass EQ circuit provides a fixed boost of 12dB at 50 Hz for the rear channels only. The Bass EQ does not function when the amp's rear-channel crossover is set to "high-pass" operation.

Inputs: The amplifier offers both line-level and speaker-level inputs for 4 channels. The supplied speaker-level input harness allows you to connect this amplifier to a receiver without preamp outputs, either aftermarket or factory.

Line Outputs: This amplifier has a pair of non-fading stereo RCA line outputs. You can use these outputs to daisy-chain another amplifier without having to run additional signal cables from the receiver.

Terminal Cover: The amp comes with two plastic covers that protect and insulates the RCA, power, and speaker connections. Four supplied machine screws attach the cover to the amplifier.

Inputs and Outputs

Left Side Of Amplifier:

  • GND (ground): Gold-plated terminal strip, 0.35" wide
  • Battery: Gold-plated terminal strip, 0.35" wide
  • Remote: Gold-plated terminal strip, 0.35" wide
  • Speaker Outputs: Gold-plated terminal strips for 4 speakers, 0.35" wide

Right Side Of Amplifier:

  • Line Inputs: 2 pairs of gold-plated stereo RCA jacks
  • Line Outputs: 1 pair of gold-plated stereo RCA jacks
  • Speaker Level Input: Molex plug input for supplied 8-pin harness

Alpine f250

Written By Pat, San Francisco Bay Area on Friday, March 06, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a very compact amp, easy to set up and very flexable for adding to it. This combined with my 9874 head unit and Alpine 6x9 behind the seat and 6 1/2 in the kick panels of my 62 Ranchero rock, my 19 year old daughter says its too loud, how can that be???

Very pleased with this amp.

Alpine does it again. I trust only two names in car stereo equipment and I made the right choice. This amp fits nicely in my trunk and performs perfectly. I would reccomend this amp to anyone who is looking for power at the right price.

Good Product

Written By Rodney, Florida on Saturday, January 24, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit was recommended by Crutchfield, and it works perfectly. Some of the instructions from Crutchfield and the manufacturer conflicted with each other and made the installation slow up, but after careful study I was able to figure it out, the manufacturer instructions are the ones to follow. Crutchfield might want to check into that.

I liked it so much, I bought another one

Written By Michael, Akron, OH on Thursday, January 22, 2009

This is a great amp. I bought one last Sept. 08 and installed it in my regular cab S-10, along with an Alpine MRP-450 mono amp. driving a 12" Kicker enclosed truck sub. I have this amp wired to my Infinity 6.5 ref. door speakers, (old 4 ohm.) with a ref. tweeter on one channel and a set of Boston Acoustics S75 4 x 6 in the dash and another set of tweeters on the sail panels of the door. The sound is so detailed and this amp has muscle; heat isn't even an issue; even driving it to the pins for hours, it's barely warm. If you get a chance, snatch one of these up before they're gone. I did, just to have an extra one. Maybe, my girlfriend will get a surprise when she turns her on her car stereo on her birthday!

Alpine ROCKS!

Written By Sir, Pa. on Wednesday, January 21, 2009

I got this amp for Christmas and installed it a few days later so I have had some time to listen since the install. All I can say is WOW! This amp has really made a difference. I have an 06' F150 SuperCrew with an Alpine CDA-9883 head unit and Infinity Reference 6822CF's in the front doors and Infinity Kappa 682.7cf's in the rear doors. (All of which was purchased from Crutchfield.) The sound was good before but now that the amp is in, the sound is that much more clear and the bass is tighter as well. I can't even listen to the stereo turned up all the way now. Since my system is a 2-ohm setup, I am able to take advantage of the extra 10 watts per channel. I also took some extra time to run 14ga. speaker wire to all of the speakers from the amp for added sound quality. All and all, this is an excellent amp for the money and the system that I have. I highly recommend it to anyone that wants a little extra kick in their pants!

Should You Buy This TINY Amplifier?

Written By cma, Annapolis, MD on Tuesday, December 30, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

OMG Yes!

A year ago I purchased a pickup truck and unfortunately the new Dodge Ram stereo is far below the factory Alpine and Bose systems I have in other cars. So I embarked on a journey to improve the audio. I thought it would be as simple as getting a nice head unit (Pioneer AVIC D3) and upgraded door speakers (Boston Acoustic SX95 and SX65s).

Wrong! To my dismay, the upgraded head unit and speakers did not sound as "complete" as the factory Alpine or Bose units in my other cars. I drove around for a year, never really satisifed with the sound and always tweaking. My biggest complaint was that I could never get it to sound good at lower/moderate volumes.

The Alpine F-250 is both a subtle and amazing improvement at the same time. The system has the same "voice", but all frequencies can now be represented at the same time. I can have a nice tight pounding mid bass without hiding the higher frequencies. I no longer feel I need a sub.

Additionally, the sound processing options in the AVIC are now useful, without turning the sound to mud.

This amp exceeds my expectations and I would recommend it for anyone with a 4-channel co-ax system. Don't mess around with your head-unit's built in amplifier; it is not enough! This is _plenty_ of clean power if your speakers have decent sensitivity.

Alpine Power on Mazda 5 Sport

Written By islandreamer, Virginia Beach, VA on Monday, December 29, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this Alpine MRP-F250 on a 2006 Mazda 5 Sport for very good reasons. Upgraded the speakers thru Crutchfield with Kenwood KFC-C6882ie 6"x8" 3-way speakers a few months ago and decided with this amp updgrade while on sale and for its reputation. The speakers made a good difference but the amp made the icing on the cake so to speak. Clean, clear and crisp. The high's were so up there that I had to trim the treble down 3 notches. Had to keep the Gain settings just a tad above normal. The amp radiates very little heat and looks great with the blue power on light. Shipping was extremely fast and customer service is always "par exellance".

Clean, Clear Power - Excellent Value

Written By Ronald, Chicago, IL on Thursday, November 06, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently installed an Alpine MRP-F250 in my 2008 Subaru WRX. I'm
feeding it from an Eclipse CD3200 head unit and using it to power my mids
and highs. I'm also using an Alpine MRP-F450 mono bass amp for the lows.
I've had a number of different amplifiers over the years (Rockford, PPI,
Orion, Alpine, etc.) and I have to say that the MRP-F250 is a very solid
amp. It's super clean and quiet, easy to install and packs a surprising
amount of punch for the price. The built in adjustable crossovers are very
flexible, allowing for full-range, high-pass or low-pass. The crossover point
is adjustable via an easily reached screw and allows for any value to be
selected in its range (e.g. - not just a few fixed choices, 80Hz, 100Hz, etc.
like on some other amps in this price range). The crossover settings can
also be set seperately for the front and rear channels. This adds versatility
to the amp. For a nice starter system, two of the channels can be set to
high-pass and used to the power the front and rear mids and highs, while
bridging the other two channels and setting them to low-pass to power a
sub. Later on, you can add a seperate bass amp and use all four channels
on this amp for mids and highs while gaining fader control. This is a really
sweet sounding, versatile amp - especially for the bargain price. It can be
used in a variety of system configurations and can grow with your system
over time. Very impressive little amp!

Awesome at minimum!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put this amp in my godson's '79 Porsche 911 SC after having installed a Porsche head unit from a 2002 Boxster. After installing some speakers in the doors prior to installing this amp, the sound quality was good, but not great. Installing this amp and some Infinity Kappa 4x6 speakers (a plate) in the rear made the sound come alive. I really recommend this amp. I've attempted this same configuration on one of my Porsches using the OEM Porsche amplifier, but the outcome was not nearly as good as with the Alpine.

This amplifier was applied to my speakers recently and the sound difference is night and day. It performs phenomenally, while getting the most out of the speakers. I absolutely adore this amp and would definitely purchase it again.

Matching amps=great sound

Written By Michael, Akron, Ohio on Friday, October 17, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like this amp. A LOT! I already owned the Alpine MRP-M450 Mono amp. running a Kicker CompVT 12" pre-loaded sub. At first, I was driving the other speakers with another brand amp. rated at about the same power, but it doesn't compare with the power and sound quality of this amplifier, which I have running a pair of older Infinity Ref. 6 1/2's and two pairs of Infinity 1101 tweeters. The detail of the tweeters is spectacular with this amp. If your an electric guitar fan, this combo is for you. Also, by using two matching amps, it seems like everything is in perfect harmony. The sub isn't over-powering the rest of the music, in fact, you can't tell the sub is there if you don't know it's there. For example, before when there was a real low base drum hit, you felt it from the sub. Now, it feels like the 6 1/2's are kicking out the sound. I'm not an expert in stereo equipment, maybe it's just that the 4-channel amp is just more powerful than the previous amp, but for me, if I build a system, I'm going to match the amps, not just by manufacturer, but by the same series. The two Alpine amps I have (MRP-M450 and MRP-F250) sound like a million bucks.

Awesome sounding powerful amp! Great price!

Written By jcool1985, Atlanta ga on Friday, September 19, 2008

Just finished up the install in my 2001 jeep grand cherokee. All I can say is
WOW! I had a sony amp for a week before switching to alpine the sony
had the same wattage as the alpine but the alpine is more powerful and
sounds a lot clearer. A night and day difference. This amp drives my alpine
type S speakers with authority and really makes them shine. Alpine must
underrate there amps because it sure seems more powerful than 40x4. Fills
my jeep with distortion free sound and will play louder than my ears can
handle. Great price and fast shipping thanks crutchfield! I installed my amp
uder the left rear seat of my jeep and it fits as long as you are willing to cut
some metal and carpet the amp will fit and the seat won't hit it.

Alpine does it again--Superb!!!

Written By Robert, Garner, NC on Monday, May 26, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this Alpine amp from Cructhfield to go in my Dodge Dakota
knockaround truck. I have it pushing two pair of Polk speakers. One set in
the doors and one set behind the seat.

The richness and clarity of the sound reproduction is incredible. I have
always had an affinity for Alpine amplifiers and head units. I didn't want to
spend and incredible amount of money for a 12 yr. old truck i just drive
occasionally, but I did want to enjoy my music when I am in it.

This amp, gives me that opportunity. If you want a great amp at a very
very affordable price--this is definitely the way to go.

Wonderful Amp

Written By Paul, Boston, MA on Thursday, February 14, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just had the amplifier installed in my 1988 Mercedes 190D. I have an original rebuilt factory head unit and Boston Acoustic speakers purchased from Crutchfield under the original grills. These are great 4 inch speakers made better by the amplifier. I was not looking to break my ear drums but only to refine and improve the sound. I was not disappointed. The car looks original but turn on the Becker radio and out comes this great sound. I have a rattle in the car that the dealer can't seem to take care of. Its no problem now.
I noticed that even at moderate volumes the bass pumps strong. I can feel it now. I've had to adjust the treble down a little to avoid ear fatigue. The Boston Acoustics were great without the amp. but now I notice even more details in the music. I can hear lyrics even better and the bass has improved.
A local store did the installation and did a good job.
Over all the sound is richer and fuller over the road noise.
