Polk Audio

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Polk Audio db1240DVC

by Dominic Devito

Polk Audio's db Series subwoofers give you trademark Polk performance without stressing your wallet. These subs combine high-tech materials with a laser-optimized motor structure for smooth, powerful bass response.

The db1240DVC 12" subwoofer boasts a rigid polypropylene cone and durable Santoprene™ surround built to handle big power over the long run. Polk Audio tests their subs rigorously to ensure that they stand up to sunlight, moisture, and extreme temperature changes.

The dual 4-ohm voice coils allow you to wire your system to draw max power from your mono amp or to safely hook up multiple subs. Match a db sub to a suitable enclosure, and enjoy impressive low-frequency performance rarely found in this price range.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible. Most 2-channel car amplifiers are stable down to 2 ohms in standard mode, or 4 ohms in bridged operation.

  • 12" subwoofer with dual 4-ohm voice coils

    Features
    Enclosure Compatibility

    Features

Dual 4-ohm Voice Coils: This woofer features dual 4-ohm voice coils that offer flexibility in wiring. When the voice coils are wired in parallel with each other, the woofer presents a 2-ohm mono load. When the voice coils are wired in series with each other, the woofer presents an 8-ohm mono load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 4-ohm load.

Polypropylene Cone: The cone is made with polypropylene, which provides durability while being lightweight and rigid. The cone is supported by a vented cone/coil coupler, which stiffens the cone for greater mechanical stability and lower distortion.

Santoprene Surround: The Santoprene surround is resistant to extremes in temperature, humidity, and exposure to sunlight for excellent long term reliability.

NOMEX Spider: The fire-retardant flat NOMEX Spider allows extended linear motion while providing highly reliable mechanical and thermal stability.

Triple-vented Kapton Voice Coil Former: Triple venting of the 4-layer Kapton Voice Coil Former, Cone/Coil Coupler and Pole Piece contribute to the high power handling and reliability of the db Series subs.

Klippel Laser Analyzed: The Polk db woofer's voice coil alignment, motor, and suspension are optimized using a state-of-the-art Klippel laser analyzer for superior cone travel linearity, resulting in a flatter response with lower distortion.

Break-In Period: Polk db subwoofers will achieve even greater performance once they are thoroughly broken-in. To break in a new db Sub, play music through it for 20 to 30 hours at moderate levels.

    Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: Polk recommends mounting this woofer in a sealed enclosure made out of 3/4" MDF with an internal volume of 0.88 cu/ft.

Recommended Ported Box Volume: Polk recommends a ported enclosure made out of 3/4" MDF with an internal volume of 1.50 cu/ft using a 4" diameter x 10" long port.

Recommended Bandpass Box Volume: Polk recommends a bandpass enclosure made of 3/4" MDF with a total internal volume of 2.15 cu/ft. The bandpass box should have a 1.0 cu/ft sealed rear chamber and a 1.15 cu/ft ported front chamber with a 4" diameter x 12" long port.

    Works great for me

Written By Alex K., Houston, TX on Monday, October 08, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Called Crutchfield looking at another subwoofer. The tech suggested I use this Polk Audio with my older Alpine MRP-M450 amplifier. I just finished installing it in my 1984 Landcruiser. Ran a few test tracks. It works well. Can get pretty loud if I turn the gain up or adjust subwoofer volume at head unit. At "normal" settings I can hear it but it isn't obnoxious. Just some extra bass. Installed it in a Bass Bunker sealed enclosure which the tech also recommended. Also got a waffle style grille for it. Installed nicely and will protect it well from anything rolling around in my cargo area. I'm 100% satisfied. Looking forward to hearing it every day. Thanks Dylan!

    Polk Audio db1240DVC

Written By Jerry, Toledo Ohio on Tuesday, September 21, 2010

upon opening i was very happy with the looks of this woofer it looked like descent quality. however after putting it in a box and putting some low level power i noticed a small air leak in the dustcap where the dustcap meets the woofer. i was dissapointed but wanted to bump so i used a little resin and fixed the leak. after 4 weeks in the car the speaker stopped working because the wire from the speaker terminal to the voice coil came off the terminal (the warranty says send the speaker back in the origanal box with return postage paid and they might fix it if they think theres something wrong with it)

so i sodered it myself 3 weeks later a wire from the other terminal came off and have to soder again. now i still have two wires waiting to break cause my speaker is DVC i shoulnt have to fix this product put up with a defect or pay for shipping to have it fixed

im using the sound ordinance m1350 at half gain this speaker should handle that

so i was skeptical at first when placing the order but i got it and then hooked it up to a kicker zx300.1 (which actually pushes 350 rms not 300 according to the birth cirtificate) and wow deffinately pounds for the price and i have it running 2ohm stable actually i wasnt just wowed i was in shock especially since i have run everything from rockford to jl to jbl to jvc to power acoustic to eclipse and kicker and im not saying its better than all of em but is def comparable due to the price def not comp level but if you just looking to fill in your music and or really bump down the street then get it ... cant be beat for the price

    First time Polker

WOW. I was skeptical at first to replace my JL Audio 12's with anything but more JL; but let me tell you..these DB's will blow you away. I'm only running them off a 2x200 Rockford amp, because upon initial setup the additional voice coils did not even need their own amperage to shake both my rear view and side view mirrors to the point of blurrage. And this is still within the break in period of only giving moderate power to them. Admitedly I did crank it for about 30-45 seconds to see if these subs could shake a 20 oz Mountain Dew off of the roof, and guess what. That dew was shaken, not stirred. Polk. Polk Audio. I'm pleasantly surprised with the performance of these Polk subs as compared to much pricier subs.

I had these hooked up to a Kicker amp (Kicker 07ZX750.1) after an hour
with the amp 1/2 way up they started smoking..... Maybe too much
power... But they did sound good while they lasted.

excellent dvc 12 on a budget

Written By steve, springville, pa on Monday, October 13, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've tried a number of high quality, mid-low power subs and this is the best by far. Volume is easily over 110db in my 93 prism. Besides the fact i'm only running 140 watts rms to each voice coil with an old sony amp.

Sound quality is also great - no booming or one note bass. The cone material is a bit heavy for any notes over 120 hz so keep the crossover below that and you should be ok. Overall totally satisfied.
