Boston Acoustics

Why install component speakers?

A component speaker system gives you the best possible performance from your car audio system. A system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, each designed to cover one specific range of frequencies. As separate components, the woofer can move freely to deliver more powerful performance, while the tweeter can be custom-mounted in a better spot up closer to your ears, revealing a whole new world of detail. Separate crossovers are far superior to the simple filters wired into full-range speakers, so the components work together for smoother, more focused sound.

Our take on the Boston Acoustics SR50

by Buck Pomerantz

Boston Acoustics SR Series speakers bring exceptional sound quality to your car. These speakers handle high power with ease, and deliver amazing detail that you've probably never heard before, even with your favorite tracks.

The SR50 component system features a strong 5-1/4" copolymer woofer that delivers the bass beat with ease. A heatsink cooling system ensures the motor assembly won't overheat, no matter how long or hard you push it. A small but powerful neodymium magnet keeps the mounting depth shallow so you can fit your SR Series speakers in lots of different vehicles. Mounting options include grilles that add a stylish touch to your custom installation.

The separate soft dome tweeter disperses high notes in an especially wide pattern — everyone hears natural-sounding music, no matter where they're sitting. The 1" tweeter can be either surface- or flush-mounted to match your installation preference. The external crossover, with its 3-level tweeter control, ensures that the tweeter and woofer mesh together perfectly for a smooth response.

    Features

Woofer: The SR50 component system is equipped with copolymer woofers with butyl rubber surrounds. Each woofer has a neodymium magnet, which has a high power-to-weight ratio and a compact size about one-tenth the size of traditional iron-ferrite magnets. The dual-stage aluminum heat sink is integrated into the motor structure to draw heat away from the voice coil increasing the power handling capability.

Tweeter: The SR50 component system features 1" Type S-1 Kortec soft-dome tweeters for a smooth high frequency response and linearity. Kortec is a specially engineered material with the rigidity of a composite dome and the smoothness and detailed response of cloth. The supplied Quick-fit mounting cup simplifies tweeter installation. The tweeters come with flush and angled surface mount brackets.

    Tweeter Dimensions:

Frame Diameter Cutout Diameter Mounting Height Mounting Depth
    Flush Mount 2.046" 1.734" 0.369" 0.72"
Angled Surface Mount 1.872" Screw holes only 1.505" Screw depth only

Crossover: The SR50 system comes with two-way adjustable crossovers. Additionally, each crossover comes in two pieces (a woofer crossover and a tweeter crossover), and can be mounted separately or docked together and mounted as one piece. The following adjustments can be made on each crossover:

    • Tweeter Attenuation: On the tweeter crossover, you can adjust the tweeter output by placing the supplied jumper on the appropriate terminals. You can select an unattenuated tweeter output (0dB attenuation), or an attenuated output of -2dB or -4dB. The factory default position is -2dB attenuation.
    • On Axis/Off Axis Configuration: On the woofer crossover you can configure the output of the woofer for on-axis (listener is directly between the left and right woofers) or off-axis (listener is behind or in front of the area between the woofers) performance. For on-axis configuration, the supplied jumper should be placed on the SQ1 terminals (factory position). For off-axis listening, the jumper goes on the SQ2 terminals.
    • Input Configurations:
      • Separate Inputs: If you are bi-amping the component system (separately powering the woofer and tweeter with different amplifier channels), no additional wiring needs to be done. The woofer crossover and the tweeter crossover each have their own separate inputs and outputs.
      • Single Input: If you are powering the component system with a single full-range input, you will need to wire the woofer crossover and the tweeter crossover together using the supplied jumper wires (there are two). The speaker wire from the amplifier connects to the input on the tweeter crossover. The woofer and tweeters are then connected to their respective outputs.

Note: No crossover frequency or slope information was provided by the manufacturer.

    Crossover Dimensions:

    • Length: 6.679"
    • Height: 1.498"
    • Width: 1.717" (mounted individually)
    • Width: 3.232" (docked together)

    Significant Upgrade

Written By Steve H, Bentonville, AR on Thursday, February 07, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the stock speakers in my son's Celica, the music is much cleaner! We had already replaced the stock head unit, so next step was the speakers. It is not any louder than before (just not enough power coming out of head unit to maximize the potential of these speakers), but sounds so much better. Next step will be an amp to really push the speakers to new levels, I know they can handle it.

    So-So

Not impressed. Bass speaker has weird rattle noise at certain volume levels. Tried different amps, no difference. Crossovers are bulky. Basically a waste of money.

    Installed in a 2006 Ford F-150
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed these today to replace a pair of Polk component speakers. The BA's sound good at low to mid volumes but break-up when you put serious power to them. I also think the Polk had better bass so that's a trade off. One of the tweeter didn't work out of the box... but Crutchfield is sending a new set out Monday no questions asked, that's why I love dealing with them. If I had it to do over again I would have just replaced my Polk speakers save some $ and some time screwing with the tweeters.
    Pros:
Sound good but gave up some bass
    Cons:
Those tweeters, what a PAIN... who came up with that mounting system? and one of them not working out of the box.

These speakers sound terrific, especially for 51/4". Turns out I could have fit 61/2", but I still love them.
    Pros:
Terrific sound from very small sprakers.
    Cons:
Crossovers are a little too large.

    best bet

Written By Rich, Long Island, NY on Saturday, April 14, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was skeptical about these because of the low price. Bottom line I have spent over 2k with Crutchfield over the last few years and these were the best purchase yet. If you're hesitant, you should just buy these! I have 4 of these powered by a JL4500 and the sound is amazing in my ford f350 crew cab! Don't waste time like I did with the full range speakers, jump to these and save!!
    Pros:
    Easy of install
    Cons:
Nothing really, but mounting the tweeters to the supplied cups is a pain.

Just bought these and had them installed in my truck. Replaced a pair of infinity kappas and these bostons blew them out of the water. I would say the difference between the infinitys and these is equivalent to the difference between stock speakers and the infinitys. Give them a good amp and you will not be disappointed. 100% recommended.

    Loud and extremely clear!

Written By Aaron, Connecticut on Tuesday, October 04, 2011

After much research for the perfect component speakers I finally decided to go with these because I do have experience with Boston Acoustic and I have always liked there sound. I bought these, installed them and they go extremely loud but stay extremely clear. Like the other person said, I removed my rear speakers because of how loud these are. You can clearly hear crystal clear vocals in the back seat. Also though you NEED to get the proper amp for these or you will not be happy. When I first got them I tried running them off headunit power and was very unimpressed. Bought a JL audio slash 300/2 amp, and WOW, what a difference! Anyone looking to buy these you will not be disappointed. I am running these with 2 diamond audio d6 12's and it sounds incredible!

    Loud Speakers

Written By crescentfallen, Nj on Thursday, July 14, 2011

I always buy polk speakers but decided to give these a try.. replaced my front door speakers on my E39 and though I wasted my money. BMW factory alpine amp could'nt cut it.. I then hooked up the front doors to a Pioneer GM amp using the crossovers and man what a difference.. These babys are loud, clear even at high decibels.. I disconnected my rear speakers did'nt need them anymore, got a 10" sealed rockford sub in the trunk.. Honestly this setup sounds way better than my altima with Polk momos up front and rear with 2 10s in the trunk.. I would definately recommend these speakers just make sure you have an amp to power these bad boys
