Our take on the Channel Master 4221HD

by Steve Kindig

Channel Master's model 4221HD antenna can receive digital and analog over-the-air TV signals in the UHF band only (most digital TV signals are in the UHF band). The 4221HD is optimized for distant "near-fringe" reception of HDTV. Its space-efficient design is suitable for roof and attic installations.

The 4221HD is classified as a Medium-sized Directional antenna. For tips on selecting an antenna, and links to websites that help you locate HDTV signals in your area, check out our article explaining how to choose and install an antenna for HDTV.

Highlights:

  • receives digital and analog UHF TV signals (channels 14-51)
  • range is 45 miles
  • 4-bay bowtie dipole design
  • 24-3/8"W x 5-3/16"D x 33"H
  • 12-1/4" turning radius (if used with an antenna rotor)
  • 75-ohm output for coaxial cable
  • accommodates 1-1/4" mast (mast not included)
  • warranty: 3 years
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee
  • RG-6 cable is recommended

Features

Overview: The Channel Master 4221HD antenna is designed for UHF frequencies only (channels 14-69), both digital and analog. It can be mounted on a roof, on a wall, to a chimney, or in an attic.

Mounting Brackets: The mounting brackets and the U-bolt are used to mount the antenna to a mast. The outer diameter of the mast should be approximately 1-1/4 inches.

Turning Radius: If using a rotor on the antenna mast, make sure a 12-1/4" turning radius around the antenna is clear of obstruction.

Grounding: The antenna and mast should be properly grounded. Grounding provides lightning protection for the antenna and your TV set.

Note: No grounding hardware is provided with the antenna.

Connections: The balun is built-in (attached at the factory) and has a female F-type connector. The included waterproof rubber weather boot should be installed over the cable connection to guard against corrosion. A twist-on threaded F-connector is also included.

Note: Coax cable is not provided, RG-6 is recommended.

Operating Range: The rated range of the 4221HD is 45 miles, but the distance is approximate, actual performance depends on too many variables to predict accurately.

Gain: The average gain across the UHF frequency range is 11.5 dB.

Works Good

Written By WesE, Somerset, VA on Friday, June 07, 2013

I am about 25 miles from the local transmitters in Charlottesville. My house sits fairly low and this antenna lets me get all the Charlottesville channels and some of the Richmond channels (60 miles away CH 6, 8, and 35) at the same time without rotating it. The Richmond channels are coming through the back of the antenna, so those signals are not as strong. But I am real happy that I it does not seem to be that sensitive to the direction. I looks like I should get more channels from Northern Virginia (80 miles away) once I get this antenna up above the roof and on the rotator and add a pre-amp. Right now I have a metal siding house and roof blocking those signals.
Pros:
Low profile to mount along side of house. When viewed on edge the antenna disappears from the road. Much better signal and less finicky then the previous dept. store plastic amplified antenna. Solid strong signals for stations at 25 miles. Good enough signals for some channels at 60 miles away.
Cons:
Does not work well for low or high VHF signals...but many of those are not around after the digital transition. You will need a mast and associated Hardware to mount the mast...but I had that already.

Antenna

Written By el, Remo VA on Saturday, February 11, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used it with my camper on a recent trip to Fla. The camper's Delta amplified antenna only recieved one channel in the state park campground. I mounted the 4221HD antenna on a 12' pool cleaning pole and attached it to the side of the camper and it recieved over 25 channels. I saved the box and fold up the antenna for transport, it is a little big but I just throw the box on the bed during transport. Set up only takes about 5 minutes. The reason for the four star rating, when I first opened the box, the pop rivet holding one end element was not securing the element to the frame. I just drilled out and replaced the pop 3/16 pop rivet, no problem for me but for others you would have to return and replace the antenna.
Pros:
Great reception. Could not have watched the Super Bowl without it while camping. Ordered one day and on my door step the next day before the trip with free shipping, that was great service. Free shipping with the the other online A site usually takes about two weeks for me to recieve an item.
Cons:
Channel Master needs to inspect their antennas closer for defects prior to packing and shipping.

Free HD TV

Written By W. McGuire, Lexington, Kentucky on Wednesday, March 23, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Channel Master 4221HD exceeded my expectations in its performance.
I mounted the antenna in my attic, oriented toward the sweet spot for my area
and picked up 16 chrystal clear channels with signal strengths well into the
90's on my signal strength meter. I can't imagine what I would pick up if it was
mounted outside and at a higher elevation. I am sick and tired of paying high
cable bills and having 3/4 's of the channels that are garbage. I am
considering putting an 8 bay antenna outside and picking up more channels
and perhaps some Cincinatti, Ohio stations and dumping cable all toghether. I
would consider a splitter with the attic antenna but that probably would cut the
output to the other tv's in my house in half. I would definitely recommend this
simple but efficient antenna for free UHF reception.

Channel Master 4221 HD

Written By Jesus M. Ramos, Moca, Puerto Rico on Thursday, March 03, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice reception for a low budget antenna. I live in a mountainous area were reception is very
poor and I can get a crisp reception for the channels available in my area. Installation is
easy. I recommend this product and Cruthfield service is great and very important hablan
español.

Channel Master 4221HD

Written By Anonymous, Near Madison, Wisc. on Thursday, September 03, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Completely pleased with this antenna. At a distance of 35 miles, across rolling farmland, it picks up all the possible stations from Madison area. Antennaweb rated this distance and topography as "purple.'
The antenna came completely assembled and was ready to put on a mast with minimal preparation.

Channel Master 4221HD

Written By Elizabeth, Rehoboth, Delaware on Sunday, April 19, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy purchase with Crutchfield. Package arrived quickly and in perfect condition.

Extremely easy setup. Hooked up to my tv in a couple of minutes and pulled in a station over 50 miles away, much to my great surprise since I had it temporarily propped up on top of a door inside the house with a 6' cable. It brought in questionable stations (from my double bow tie with rabbit ears) crystal clear and added about 50% more stations!

Thrilled I made the purchase, will be getting another one for a friend.
