Klipsch

Our take on the Klipsch Mode M40

by Dave Bar

With a long tradition of high-performance professional and home audio loudspeakers to its credit, Klipsch knows great sound. In keeping with that time-honored legacy, they've now re-created their acclaimed sonic signature in a compact portable design that you can wear. The Mode M40 noise-canceling headphones stand ready to deliver your favorite tunes with all the clarity and realism that made Klipsch famous.

Their advanced two-way design features a separate woofer and tweeter in each earcup for solid punchy bass and crisp sparkling highs. Built-in active noise-canceling technology blocks out the world around you so you can focus better on your music. And the softly padded, leather earcups provide a comfortable and luxurious fit that you can really sink into.

Switch between your calls and music with ease

The Mode M40's in-line three-button remote makes it easy to answer and end calls, control the volume of your calls or music, and pause, play, or skip through your songs. You can even take calls on your iPhone® hands-free, thanks to an in-line microphone that lets you hear and be heard clearly.

Ready to travel

The M40's compact folding design makes them a pleasure to take along. Klipsch included both microfiber and leather carrying cases to provide safe storage when you tuck them into a bag, suitcase, or jacket. The supplied airline adapter lets you easily plug in to in-flight entertainment. Plus, these 'phones come with two removable cords — one with the in-line remote/microphone, and a standard headphone cable.

From the review The Beautiful Sound of Silence: Checking out the Klipsch Mode M40 headphones

"Overall, I loved these headphones. I can wear them a long time without them becoming uncomfortable, They're nice all-'rounders and are fantastic for the airplane, plus they sound great. If you're in the market for some new 'phones, give [the Mode M40s] a look..."

— Zak, Crutchfield Video Production Coordinator

    Partial Hit

Written By Bryan, Honolulu, HI on Saturday, January 05, 2013

First things first, these headphones sound fantastic! I have worn them on multiple long-haul flights and the sound is great, the case is a little bulky but offers great protection, and they look as good as they sound. They are more comfortable than others I have owned, especially on long flights. The battery life is long, especially for a single AAA battery, and they work even when powered off or after the battery dies. The only negative is the so-called noise canceling...there is next to none at all. It is difficult to even tell how much noise is blocked out because they hardly cancel any noise at all. Despite that, when you turn them on the music/movie is amplified and as long as you are listening to something the aircraft or other noise is non-existent. So I call the noise cancelation button an amplifier power switch so I won't be disappointed when they don't block unwanted noises below 10k feet. Another huge plus is that no matter how loud the music is, no one around you will hear anything at all. Overall they are great, but the NC needs some work...there aren't any microphones on the outside of the earcups, in fact it looks like they are inside below the drivers which makes no sense.
    Pros:
    Sound quality, durability, looks, case
    Cons:
    Noise canceling

    Klipsch Mode M40

Written By Headphone head, Simi Valley,Ca. on Sunday, November 04, 2012

They are not for everyone. First time I heard them I agreed with the first two reviews. These are cans that must be broken in however. After 50+ hours of wearing them the sound has changed completely. They are crisp and will show most flaws if you have them in your recordings. The fit is a little tight but as time goes on the comfort level gets better. If I had returned them after just a couple of hours of trying them I would of been mad at myself now. If you like Bose colored sound then these are not for you, but if you like a true 20-20,000 sound then you should consider these. I have owned at least 25+ set of headsets so far and still have at least 10+ pairs. Everything from V-Modes to Senseheimers HD 600. Headphones come down to a very personal preferences and what you expect them to sound like. Good luck and I hope this clears up someones curiosity concerning M40's.
    Pros:
Very well built and realistic sounding. Not colored sound.
    Cons:
A tad too tight but they are fitting better with time.

    M40...I hope only a defective

Written By Michael J., Redmond, Wa on Saturday, April 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of all let me say that I am a die-hard fan of Klipsch products, from my computer room to my main music listening room I love Klipsch. When I saw the M 40's i was very excited. How could I miss with a pair of Klipsch headphones? After all, I got the S4i in-ear Headset by Klipsch and they were just the best, smooth bass, great midrange and an electrifying hi end. They were the best, and that was what I expected from my new M 40's the best, but it wasn't to be.
    Pros:
The only only pro's with this unit was the packaging, which was very nice. The tech support people at Crutchfield suggested I try another pair of the M 40's before I make my final decision as the people at Klipsch do not make the kind of product I listed and with my love for their product, I agreed.
    Cons:
The con's were many, but I will not go into those until my new pair arrive and I get a chance to experience those.

M40 is ok but not the best.

Written By Lee, Okemos, MI. on Sunday, April 22, 2012

I have ownedvariety of headphones. Bose in ear ones (past), monster ear-buds (current), Klipsch s4 (current), skullcandy in ear ones (past) and klipsch image one over the ear ones (current). I do not have a loyalty to a brand and of all the headphones I have used, the Klipsch Image One is the one that impressed me the most and Klipsch S4 are the second best. The sound production I like is a decent and a noticeable bass with crisp highs. Since Klipsch Image One produces what I liked, I decided to buy Mode M40 thinking that they will be at least twice better than the Image One since they cost 2 1/2 times as much. Once I opened the package I was very impressed with the looks, the sturdy feel, the extra cables. But all the impressive features stopped once I put them on and started to listen to different genres of music from my iPod. The highs on some material was muffed almost not existent and sounded like I was in the bathroom, the bass did not have that sweet thump but rather a dull one. They are way too heavy and a bit tight and uncomfortable. If I had them for more than an hour, regardless of the soft cushions the pressure on my ears became very uncomfortable. Noise cancellation also is not top notch. Klipsch Image One headphones beat these expensive cans easily in every category with the exception of the looks. If they were around $200 dollars the M40s would be okay but at this price they are too expensive.
    Pros:
Packaging, extras, the looks, so-so noise cancelling, so-so sound quality.
    Cons:
Too heavy, comfort level and high price.
