Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers. The satellites are video-shielded for placement near a TV, and the swivel design lets you rotate the twin cubes for an ideal mix of direct and reflected sound. Because low frequencies are omnidirectional, you can place the Acoustimass module anywhere in your room even out of sight and the bass will seem to emanate from the tiny cubes. Each cube contains a 2.5" Twiddler cone driver. The two satellites are video shielded, but the bass module is not shielded. Bass Module: The bass module has a port opening in the front of the unit. There is an automatic system protection circuitry that keeps the unit from being overdriven by reducing output. This may cause a slight decrease in volume. Wiring: Wires are run from the left and right speaker output of the receiver to the bass module which has two spring clip speaker inputs. Wires are then run from the two spring clip speaker outputs on the bass module to the left and right cubes. Since the crossover networks needed to protect the cubes are in the bass module NOT in the individual cubes, the units must be connected this way. Wall Mounting: Each of the satellites has a 5mm female thread in the back allowing for the use of optional screw in type brackets. Specifications: As with most Bose products, many specifications such as frequency response and sensitivity are not given. Power is given as "compatible with receivers or amplifiers rated from 10-200 watts per channel". Impedance is given as "compatible with receivers or amplifiers rated from 4-8 ohms". The set nicely compliments my Onkyo 8558 stereo in a non-surround setup. The acoustimass bass module is hidden and the cubes take up little space. My wife appreciates that:)! Pros: Easy setup. Nice look and good sound. Cons: A little weak in the midrange. Was this review helpful? Pros: sound, easy to install, color Cons: none Was this review helpful? Yes | No 5 out of 5 Bose Acoustimass 5 Series III Written By Robert R, Long Island NY on Thursday, January 03, 2013 Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?) I added this system as rear-speakers to my ONKYO receiver which has one pair of 301's with BOSE wall mounts. I am happy with the sound of the 301's and the Acoustimass was no disappointment either. The cube speakers are convenient and work well when space is a problem. The module (which looks like a subwoffer) is versatile as it can be placed in many different places easily. I feel Bose is a good value overall as the sound is full and responsive and brings life to the music. I have seen many systems which are louder, and have more depth to their sound, but they also cost thousands more. I placed the cube speakers on the wall with BOSE mounts and they work flawlessly The only gripe I have is that more wire could be provided in the box. If you are going to place these with any significant distance from the receiver, you will need more wire as you will fall short. Pros: Great sound, innovative, easy to set-up, and convenient where space is tight. Cons: The included wires need to be a bit longer. 2 out of 3 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Yes | No 5 out of 5 Sound great to me Written By Steve D., Hampstead, N.C. on Thursday, December 13, 2012 Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?) I guess it depends on what you owned previously. I had a pair of Epicure tower speakers that I gave away when I moved. They were huge with two 12" woofers in each speaker. They sounded great but took up so much room. I've finally have my music room / Lizard Lounge set up in the new place and I'm very pleased with these speakers. While not the earth shaking bass that I had from my previous speakers, the highs are crisp and the bass is most satisfying. Conveinent configuration and love the white color option. Pros: Nice sharp mids and especially highs. Can aim them where you want - two directions each speaker. Very nice in the white color. Cons: I really don't have any. 8 out of 9 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Sounds GREAT 1 out of 4 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Yes | No 5 out of 5 Love This System Written By jtshaw84, Spokane, WA on Thursday, July 19, 2012 I love my Acoustimass 5. I was really looking for a great 2.1 system and contemplated getting the Cinemate system instead. I went with the Acoustimass because I wanted a system that was powered from my receiver(Pioneer VSX-522) and that didn't take up a ton of space. What you read about the Acoustimass module is true. This passive sub sounds like it forgot to eat its Wheaties this morning. However, to me that is perfect. I don't want my room earthquaking while I'm watching just normal TV. In my opinion, the included sub is the perfect amount of bass. Sure, for movies a little more bass is nice so I added a Pioneer SW-8 sub. For some, $400 is a bit steep but Bose offers 0% financing if you need it. I'm sure there are better systems out there for $400 but not with the same small size, great looks and simplicity. I highly recommend. Pros: Small Size Appearance Sound Cons: Weak Sub(good for TV though) 4 out of 4 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Yes | No 3 out of 5 Think twice Written By Todd, Florida on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?) I purchased this system on the reputation of BOSE; don't get me wrong the system is , ok, that's it, just ok. If you have any size room (larger) DO NOT GET THIS, think twice. The subwoofer is not powered and seems like it missed it's daily does of Ensure. In a small room it will be fine, hence that's where I am moving this system; to the dining room via a Rocketfish to make it wireless. It should do fine in there. If you're looking for a sound system, go with a seperate amp. EQ speakers etc. You can do MUCH better. I was going to send this system back, but the dining room idea saved it. P.S. I have owned a pair of the Acoustimass 5 speakers for almost 10 years, and now that they had gone down in price and I own a 7.1 receiver, it only made sense to get another pair. I have heard the complaints people have had against Bose, claiming the mid's are missing, and it is true. I would never use these speakers as my main speakers, because all you have is highs and lows. But, for movie sound effects, these speakers are unmatched as your surround speakers; plus they are small enough to be hidden anywhere in your room. You will be hard-pressed to find speakers in this price range that are better. Two thumbs up! 8 out of 9 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Yes | No 3 out of 5 They are what they are. Written By James, Columbia, SC on Saturday, July 18, 2009 I've had these speakers close to ten years and had always enjoyed them until I had something better to compare them to. If space is at an ultra premium, these may suit you well, otherwise I'd stay clear. Sadly, I think today Bose has become nothing more than a marketing machine. One really pays more for the Bose name than the quality of sound. 20 out of 21 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? The Bose system in my llving room (about a 14 x 18 foot room) is remarkable. Across all ranges, from highs to lows, the Bose system delivers sharp, clean sound. I am impressed. I listen to classics most of the time and this systems delivers first-rate sound. 13 out of 14 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Yes | No 3 out of 5 Entry-Level System better than TV Sound Written By BYRON, Near Philadelphia, PA, USA on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?) I ordered the Bose AM5 Series III in black because the family was not satisfied with the sound from our big-bucks hi-def Toshiba flat panel television. Of course, to use these, I needed to spend more money on a home theater receiver, but I thought the investment would be worth it. Since I could NOT use back channel speakers (no placement options), I installed this unit with the higher-end VCS-10 center channel speaker. Together I am quite satisfied with the sound quality. I recommend the optional stands for the speakers to get decent height. (Most tables are too low for the speakers to sit on them.) I accidently got the stands in Silver and they blend in better with the light colored walls. Oh, and expect to buy a LogiTech remote to bring it all out of the total confusion remote control world. 2 out of 3 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? I was hoping to get the legendary Bose sound but it comes up way short. If you are wanting great bass with your movies and music this is not the unit for you. This unit needs a powered sub. Not worth the price of admission. 19 out of 24 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Bought these based on the reviews, but they don't sound as good as folks let on. Very bright treble, but no midrange punch and the bass is muddy. Maybe it is the Onkyo 8222 receiver I bought with it, or that I am playing my iPod through it using the Onkyo dock. Whatever it is, I guess I expected better than this. Sounds like the equivalent of a cheap boom box. 14 out of 15 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Yes | No 5 out of 5 Amazing Written By Jennie, San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?) We bought this to use with a new TV, but when it arrived we decided to try it with our stereo system, just to see how it sounds (set-up is so easy you can try it in every room in the house with no problem). We were able to compare the sound to our existing Bose 901s by switching back and forth, and were surprised to find that this system compares very well to the large and impressive 901s. We put it through quite a test - symphonic, baroque, opera, jazz, rock, hiphop, spoken word - and the sound is astonishingly good. Looking at the little cube speakers, I would never have believed it if I hadn't heard it. We're so impressed with it that we're thinking of buying an additional system for a different room. 5 out of 5 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Yes | No 5 out of 5 awesome!!!! Written By Anonymous, westport ct on Monday, March 06, 2006 Purchased this system for my living room i wanted to get bookshelf speakers but had to compromise with the wife so i listened to this system and purchased it with reservation as the tiny cubes concerned me well after installing which placement is critical as the cubes are off the ceiling about 13 feet from each other and the bass module is behind our half chair the reciever is a dennon 2106 and i had to turn the bass up on the reciever but the sound is truly everywhere!!! it is perfect for listening to music the sweet spot is any where you stand i also have the top portion of the cubes directed at the side walls for reflected sound truly impressive!!!!!!!!! I must stress again placement is critical to get the direct and reflected sound. 39 out of 42 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Yes | No 5 out of 5 Another Great Product from Bose! Written By David, Kalamazoo, MI on Monday, January 16, 2006 Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?) My father has this system in his family room. I was so amazed by the sound that I went out and bought one for myself. The small speakers don't take up any space at all and still deliver the great sound you would find from a bigger speaker. I already own the Bose 161 speakers, so this setup sounds GREAT!!! Not only is the sound great, but it was the easiest setup you can find. Will continue to buy Bose and only from Crutchfield. 18 out of 21 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? I had a set of 601's and was nervous about going to such a small set up after enjoying years of great sound from my Bose 601's. I was pleasently surprized to find this setup rocks. I would recommend Bose to anyone. Ever since I bought my first set of Bose in Sardinia Italy while serving in the Air Force, I will never buy anything but Bose. This was the easiest setup - the small speakers connected to the subwoofer, then you connect the subwoofer to the stereo. Sounds like my bigger 301 or 901's. I bought the 301s in 1980 they they still sound great. You can not go wrong with Bose, and this specific speaker system is just perfect. They look small but sound great - sounds like a Bose add, but it is all true. 36 out of 40 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? I needed a small speaker for my summer home. I want something that could be mounted to the wall, because I had no floor space to create the stereo effect. So I purchased the Bose AM5 III Speaker System. When I was trying them out in our family room, (I have an old pair of Bose 601's) my wife said that sounds good, I would like a pair in the kitchen. Well, that's were they are now, mounted to the ceiling, with the base module on the floor. What an excellent sound, crisp and clean. The base module will produce deeper bass tones on a vinyl tile floor. You will need to put the rubber feet on to have balance. The cubes are easy to mount to the ceiling and adjust the cube direction. The white speakers came with white wire, trimmed and marked.I listen to classical music and my wife listens to smooth jazz.So I just purchased another set for my summer home. 44 out of 56 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Why choose bookshelf speakers? Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Yes | No

5 out of 5 Bose Acoustimass 5 Series III Written By Robert R, Long Island NY on Thursday, January 03, 2013 Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?) I added this system as rear-speakers to my ONKYO receiver which has one pair of 301's with BOSE wall mounts. 5 out of 5 Sound great to me Written By Steve D., Hampstead, N.C. on Thursday, December 13, 2012 Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?) I guess it depends on what you owned previously. Yes | No

5 out of 5 Love This System Written By jtshaw84, Spokane, WA on Thursday, July 19, 2012 I love my Acoustimass 5. Yes | No
3 out of 5 Think twice Written By Todd, Florida on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?) I purchased this system on the reputation of BOSE; don't get me wrong the system is , ok, that's it, just ok. P.S. Crutchfield gets a 100 ! 12 out of 14 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Yes | No
4 out of 5 Great Surround Speakers Written By Ace, Newark, NJ on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?) I have owned a pair of the Acoustimass 5 speakers for almost 10 years, and now that they had gone down in price and I own a 7.1 receiver, it only made sense to get another pair. Yes | No
3 out of 5 They are what they are. Yes | No

5 out of 5 I like it Written By Scott, TBurg, NY on Sunday, January 18, 2009 Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?) The Bose system in my llving room (about a 14 x 18 foot room) is remarkable. Across all ranges, from highs to lows, the Bose system delivers sharp, clean sound. I am impressed. I listen to classics most of the time and this systems delivers first-rate sound. 13 out of 14 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Yes | No
3 out of 5 Entry-Level System better than TV Sound Written By BYRON, Near Philadelphia, PA, USA on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?) I ordered the Bose AM5 Series III in black because the family was not satisfied with the sound from our big-bucks hi-def Toshiba flat panel television. Yes | No
2 out of 5 What a let down. Written By Chadwick, Destin, FL on Monday, September 08, 2008 Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?) This purchase was a real let down. I was hoping to get the legendary Bose sound but it comes up way short. If you are wanting great bass with your movies and music this is not the unit for you. This unit needs a powered sub. Not worth the price of admission. 19 out of 24 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Yes | No
2 out of 5 Bose® Acoustimass® 5 Series III speaker system Written By Mike, Anchorage, Alaska on Saturday, August 23, 2008 Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?) Bought these based on the reviews, but they don't sound as good as folks let on. Yes | No
5 out of 5 Amazing Written By Jennie, San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?) We bought this to use with a new TV, but when it arrived we decided to try it with our stereo system, just to see how it sounds (set-up is so easy you can try it in every room in the house with no problem). Yes | No
5 out of 5 awesome!!!! Yes | No
5 out of 5 Another Great Product from Bose! Yes | No
4 out of 5 Bose sound Written By Harley 54, Yorktown VA on Sunday, January 15, 2006 I bought this set up a couple of years ago when my wife wanted more space in the living room. Great sound by a great company. 7 out of 13 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Yes | No
5 out of 5 Bose® Acoustimass® 5 Series III speaker system Written By David, Northern Virginia on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?) This was the easiest setup - the small speakers connected to the subwoofer, then you connect the subwoofer to the stereo. Yes | No
5 out of 5 Bose® Acoustimass® 5 Series III speaker system Written By Dennis, Evergreen Park, IL on Friday, March 25, 2005 Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?) I needed a small speaker for my summer home.
