Pro-Ject

Our take on the Pro-ject Debut Carbon

by Dave Bar

A best seller just got even better

Focused squarely on performance, Pro-Ject's original Debut turntables proved that you didn't have to spend a fortune to savor the warm, natural sound of vinyl. These easy-to-use, great-sounding, and modestly priced models changed many a music lover's expectations of what an entry-level 'table was capable of.

Now, Pro-Ject has raised the bar again with the Debut Carbon. Boasting improvements in nearly every facet of design, the Debut Carbon breaks new ground, offering features rarely found on turntables in its price range. Each element contributes substantially to the overall improvement in sound — from the tonearm to the updated motor suspension. Here's what's new about the Debut Carbon:

  • an all-new, one-piece carbon fiber tonearm that increases rigidity and reduces unwanted resonances that color sound.

  • a full-size 12" platter with a felt mat to better support your record albums. The resonance-damping alloy platter is also more massive, resulting in smoother, more stable rotation for an all-around sonic improvement.

  • a Sorbothane motor suspension that better isolates the 'table's chassis from vibration, decreasing motor noise and rumble to a bare minimum.

  • gold-plated RCA output jacks mounted on the back of the turntable instead of a hard-wired cable, allowing upgrades to high-quality aftermarket interconnects.

  • a high-performance Ortofon 2M Red phono cartridge pre-mounted to the Carbon's tonearm for precise and accurate sound reproduction.

Crafted for serious sound

The Debut Carbon's sturdy MDF chassis rests on shock absorbing rubber feet that provide a solid, low-resonance foundation. Its heavy 12" steel platter spins on a precision axle and bearing for excellent speed stability and smooth, silent rotation. The Sorbothane motor mount and belt drive system are designed to isolate the motor's vibration from the chassis to prevent noise from being transferred to the cartridge. An external AC power supply helps reduce the chance of hum, and can even be upgraded with Pro-Ject's Speed Box S for enhanced performance. Finally, the table's new one-piece carbon fiber tonearm includes a silicone-damped lift for gently raising and lowering the arm — protecting both the stylus and your records.

Get the best sound, without the hassle

Pro-Ject knows that turntable setup can be a challenge for the novice. That's why the Debut Carbon comes out of the box virtually ready to play. Its pre-matched, factory-mounted phono cartridge and tonearm take the guesswork out of installation, and give you optimized sound quality with minimal effort. A few simple steps to dial in key settings like tracking force and anti-skating, are all it takes to get this player primed and ready to deliver spacious, detailed music. If you've never experienced the relaxed sound that vinyl is famous for, what are you waiting for?

Highlights:

  • heavy 12" steel platter with felt mat provides excellent speed stability and protects records from scratches
  • precision stainless-steel bearing system for smooth, quiet platter rotation
  • one-piece carbon fiber tonearm for superior rigidity and low resonance
  • includes pre-mounted Ortofon 2M Red moving magnet cartridge
  • medium density fiberboard (MDF) base with four shock absorbing rubber feet
  • AC motor decoupled from base for reduced vibration transmission and better sound
  • Sorbothane motor suspension
  • manual operation with silicone-damped tonearm lift
  • 33-1/3 and 45 rpm speeds
  • speed variation: ±0.8%
  • wow and flutter: ±0.10%
  • signal-to-noise ratio: 68dB
  • frequency range (with included cartridge): 20-22,000 Hz
  • channel separation (with included cartridge): >22dB
  • gold-plated RCA audio jacks
  • external power supply reduces likelihood of electro-mechanical interference
  • compatible with Pro-Ject Speed Box II electronic speed regulator for enhanced sound and speed-changing convenience
  • weight: 12.4 lbs.
  • 16-3/8"W x 4-3/4"H (with dust cover down) x 13-1/8"D
  • warranty: 2 years (1 year warranty for the supplied cartridge)
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee
  • requires a phono preamp or phono input on receiver or preamplifier

Features

Resonance-Reducing Construction: The attractive resonance-reducing MDF plinth supports a heavier 300mm diameter metal platter for smoother rotation and lower wow and flutter. Additionally, a felt record mat is employed for superior record support and coupling. The platter and plinth assembly sits upon four-point "O"-ring feet designed for energy absorption and the plinth-mounted motor is isolated by a new Sorbothane suspension keeping unwanted noise and vibration to a bare minimum. The motor is even decoupled from the plinth to reduce vibration transmission.

Note: The turntable should be positioned on a low-resonance surface such as wood or multiple layer ply-board to avoid structural vibrations disturbing replay.

High-Fidelity Sound: The 8.6" single-piece tube carbon fiber tone-arm that increases stiffness while decreasing unwanted resonances resulting in a higher fidelity presentation of your vinyl recordings. Fitted to the carbon fiber arm is a true high-end cartridge, the 2M Red moving magnet (MM) phono cartridge by Ortofon. This arm/cartridge combination is capable of exceptional tracking and recovery of the musical nuance found within the records grooves.

Belt Driven: The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon features a quiet running AC motor with a two-step pulley which drives the hub and platter via a flat-ground belt. The Debut Carbon supports 33-1/3 and 45 rpm speeds.

RCA Output Jacks: Plinth mounted RCA output jacks allow for the use of higher quality interconnects for even better sonic performance. Connect the turntable to the Phono input of your home receiver.

Note: If your receiver does not have a suitable Phono MM input, a separate phono pre-amplifier (sold separately) is required to connect the turntable to your amplifier.

Dust Cover: The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon comes supplied with a dust cover to prevent dust build-up on the turntable.

AC Power Adapter: The turntable operates off of standard household current using the supplied external AC power adapter.

  • Input: 120V~60Hz, 13.0W
  • Output: 15V, 550mA

7 High Gloss Finishes: The Debut Carbon is offered in seven high-gloss fashion colors - Black, Blue, Green, Red, Silver, White, & Yellow.

Great, good-looking turntable

Written By Big Daddy, Rockville, MD on Sunday, June 16, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm Getting back into vinyl after many years. My last turntable was a low-end Sony that skipped if you walked by it, so I didn't want to do that again. While this was more than I originally intended to spend, the money has been well spent. I would highly recommend this turntable to anyone who's a beginner audiophile.

The only thing I'd note is that it was difficult to set it up. The instructions in the manual weren't that clear when it came to balancing the tonearem. I called Crutchfield for help, but the tech guy just read the manual to me. Not really his fault, though. I don't think anyone could explain how to do it over the phone. I'd recommend watching a couple videos online for assistance. Once it's set up, though, it's a truly awesome machine.
Pros:
Looks great, sounds great
Cons:
Difficult to set up

Couple surprises..

Written By Tee, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, June 05, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read all the reviews and researched before buying this turntable. The one surprise was that in order to go from 45 RPM to 33 1/2 RPM or vice versa you are required to lift the platter and move the rubber band from one groove to another. That information should be up front and in the description of the item. I hooked this turntable up to a NAD 356BEE amplifier and purchased a Pro-ject S Box with this turntable. There is an Pro-ject SE (E stands for Electronic) box which negates the need to manually move the platter, but it is not readily available, and apparantly, is not in demand. My guess is that the "SE" Box gives off noise and that is unwarranted. The turntable is silent in its operation but, of course, you will get some noise when you turn the pre-amp box on. In order to hear this noise (the turntable is properly grounded) I need to turn the amp up to about 11 oclock to hear it. The turntable comes with a Ortofon Red needle but as others have stated, the manual does not tell you how to set it up (weight to be placed on the needle).
Pros:
Great sound. Looks great. Well made.
Cons:
At this price plus the Pro-ject pre-amp S box this setup cost me $600. That is steep and not in the wheelhouse for the majority of people. The record revolution will have to get cheaper for it to really take off. Most will tell you that records sound better than other means to play music but I have a relatively cheap Yamaha CD Player CDS-300 and play music on my thumb drive and while I would give the edge to the records, my bet is that a better CD player may rival or come awfully close to the sound.

Great Turntable

Written By FC, Ohio on Wednesday, May 29, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When my old turntable died, I was looking for a reasonably priced replacement. This was a great purchase. It was pretty easy to put together, although the instructions were slightly confusing in one or two places. Even so, it didn't take too much to get things working. The sound is great, and it seems very well made. Anyone who has searched for reviews of entry-level turntables would expect as much. In all, I'm very satisfied.

Shipping from Crutchfield was quick and easy. This was my first purchase from Crutchfield, and I was happy with the results.

Great table, great bargain

Written By JohnS, New York, NY on Thursday, May 09, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound from this table, simple to set up and adjust and it looks great (I went with the red). Probably worth a few bucks to get gold plated RCA cables to replace the one supplied. One thing that's not great is the really flimsy felt pad for the platter, it's so thin it comes up when removing a record from the platter. You'll want to replace that, or even the entire platter (stamped steel) with a solid acrylic platter, as many have suggested. Then this table would be as good as it gets for the money.
Pros:
Extremely easy to set up and adjust the tone arm
Cons:
Very thin felt pad on the platter, needs an upgrade

Great performance

Written By Bob, Clearwater, Fl on Monday, May 06, 2013

Beautiful styling, EZ setup (except the trick to hanging the anti-skating weight is to position the arm towards center of table), good price and sounds great.
Pros:
simple set-up - good perforamance
Cons:
May only be able to replace stylus with similar - no tone arm height adjustment.

back to vinyl

Written By DonE., Hilo Hawaii on Wednesday, May 01, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been hauling around about 300 albums for 30 to 45 years. Kept them all from getting moldy ( somehow). The turntable is awesome. Really takes me back. My old DUAL semi-auoto just couldn't take all the moves in my life. Got this with the Cambridge 551-P pre amp to put into my aux. input, and after upgrading audio cables to Monster gold.ALL IS WELL.. ( I had some hum w/ standard red/white audio cables.)
Pros:
sound , balance of tone arm, looks
Cons:
I had to put the turntable in a spot where the top cannot fully open . Don't want to over-tighten top adj. , so I use a black balsa wood "prop-up" stick to keep the top 1/2 open. Can't really see it since all the cabinetry is also black So, in reality ,this not really a "con" for the product , just where I put it

Amazing Value

Written By JacobE, Natchez, MS on Monday, April 29, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My wife surprised me with this turntable for my birthday. It replaced a $100 "portable" turntable that I had been enjoying for the past year. I was skeptical as to whether this turntable would actually have a noticeable difference in sound quality. It does. It is like night and day.

I have it hooked up to my Harman Kardan Receiver which is connected to a pair of Anthony Gallo micro nucleus speakers. The sound is crystal clear and I can hear so much more out of my records. Awesome birthday present and awesome turntable. For the price, you can't beat it.
Pros:
Aesthetic Design, Sound Quality

great intro to LPs

Written By Anonymous, naples fl on Saturday, April 27, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

great intro to LPs. had never owned a turntable, was nervous about the set-up of a record player, but if you follow a video on youtube, it's a breeze. without that video however, the instructions are brutal in my humble opinion. the sound is fantastic but it is my first turntable so no comparisons exist from my history. that being said, blows CDs away. the vocals are the biggest difference, they truly come alive. my onkyo CD player has a hefty DAC in it, but still doesnt do music justice compared to this little gem. would recommend NEW LPs for any beginners out there. IF you take the plunge into USED LPs prepare to be annoyed with the static and popping, which will lead down an endless road of anti-static guns and LP washing contraptions to remedy such, which, in and of itself can be fun, but somewhat frustrating and expensive at the same time.
Pros:
real music
Cons:
none

Great Turntable_ But

Written By Steve K, Valencia CA on Thursday, April 25, 2013

Let me first say that I love the sound of the Ortofon 2M cartridge. The turntable has a small amount of motor noise that I can here with my headphones . You can feel the motor vibrate on the mounting board. Overall a nice turntable for the price with a wonderful sounding cartridge. Would buy again.
Pros:
Great Ortofon 2M cartridge and great looking turntable.
Cons:
Slight motor noise.

Awesome Turntable! Setup is a breeze!

Written By KaseyD, Seattle, WA on Thursday, April 04, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This turntable is great. I got it as the first piece of the new home stereo I'm putting together, and even hooked up to my old Sony shelf system it still sounds excellent. I was surprised how simple the setup was out of the box, but it takes less than ten minutes total. I'm so glad I finally got this after it had been on back order for a while. I can see why now!
Pros:
Easy Setup Great Sound Looks very sleek
Cons:
Bass could be a little better
