Outdoor speakers let you move the party outside

Outdoor speakers are built tough -- they laugh at wind, rain and weather. Tuck a pair under your eaves and they'll pump out the tunes to keep everybody smiling and swaying at your next cookout or pool party. We also have some "rock" speakers that blend seamlessly into your landscaped lawn or garden.

Our take on the Polk Audio Atrium Sub10

by Loren Barstow

The lack of walls and other reflective surfaces can make outdoor speakers sound thin and tinny. But now you can add some real low-end punch to your outdoor music system with the Polk Atrium Sub10. This all-weather subwoofer features a 10" driver to deliver the deep bass frequencies that typical outdoor speakers just can't handle. Connect the Sub10 to your receiver or amplifier, and you'll enjoy fuller, richer sound at all your cookouts and outdoor gatherings.

The tough resin enclosure sports a terracotta finish that you can paint to match your deck or patio décor. And it supports up to 200 pounds, so you can use it as a plant stand or an end table.

Polk designed the Sub10 to perfectly complement their Atrium Sat30 outdoor speakers, but you can use it to add punchy bass to any outdoor speaker system.

    Pold Atrium sub10

Written By philip c, Franklin, Tn on Saturday, May 18, 2013

Good sounding base, but was unaware it required an amp to function and also requires both left and right inputs. I was planning to use the sons sub output single lead.
    Pros:
    Good base response,
    Cons:
Should come with a grill to protect speaker from elements and varmints. It appears to be available as an option. Requires âmp to drive. they should offer a powered unit for outdoors.

The Atrium Sub 10 filled the missing link

Written By Kevin, Louisville, KY on Wednesday, January 23, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Polk Audio Atriumn Sub 10 (outdoor sub woofer) filled the gap of the missing link of listening to the Atrium 4 speakers alone. I had four Polk Audio Atrium 4 speakers. They provided a crisp clean sound. However, once I installed the Atrium Sub 10, I was blown away. The performance of the sub woofer far exceeded my expectations. I never thought I would get that much of a deep sound from a speaker outdoors. I have a set of Bose computer speakers and a Bose 5:1 surround sound indoor theatre system. And as far as I am concerned, the Polk Audio speakers out performs Bose in every aspect. Especially when it comes to the value.
    Pros:
Easy to install. Provided a full rich sound when using with Atrium 4 speakers. The best product for the $.
    Cons:
Have to spray paint to match patio color scheme. I wish there were 2 or 3 color options.

    Happy As All Get Out

Written By Thomas, LA area on Thursday, May 31, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my old tower speakers on the patio with this sub woofer and two Bose 151 outdoor speakers. All 3 driven from two old left/right lines from the old hippy-speakers that run into house and straight into the "B channel" of the old 100-watt receiver outputs.

Thats the recipe. No speaker switches. No powered sub woofer. No base blockers (don't ask). No dedicated coaxial line.

I even tried Bose 251's. Compared to the 151's those were ok. But NOT with the sub woofer. Too much base from everywhere. And not the "good" base. Just that sluggish, low, exhausted sound that only inhibited any high tones from the 251s.

The sub is made to run with smaller speakers. No doubt, the "Party approved" Polk set-up, with their Sat 30's is good. Maybe even great. But I already had the 151's. And besides looking good, they deliver the high sounds over a broader area that even the 251's could.

If your obsessed enough to have read this far, then you'll want to know: Covered patio 30' X 15 feet, nestled in "elbow" of stucco house. Open on a short end and along the back. 151's placed high up, just under cover ceiling at mid-point and edge of open end (along the long side of house). That's the most occupied half-but placement is subjective.

CRUTCHFIELD stood ready to tech-support my set-up, but when the sub woofer came, I found it to be faster to twist wires than punch a phone number. They took good care of me. I will be back.
    Pros:
Easy set up. Looks good. Go ahead, put a plant on it, really.
    Cons:
Thank God I'm not audiophile enough to come up with any. You guys need help ; )

    Solid Performance

Written By Jerry, Preston, CT on Friday, June 03, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have searched for a reasonalby priced additon to my Bose outdoor speakers as they lacked the bass performance that I want in my system and I finally found it in the Polk Atrium Sub 10.

I am powering the sub through the subwoofer output of my Yamaha receiver and a Hafler 220 stereo power amplifier. This allows me to control the output of the subwoofer in order to better blend the subwoofer with the main speakers at all listening levels. I couldn't be more pleased. I now have the sound I was looking for at lower volume levels. We can carry on a conversation while still enjoying great sound.

If you plan on using the sub as a passive subwoofer, I would recommend the entire Polk Atrium system as I am sure that they are designed to perform best together.

Provided the sound depth I was looking for outdoors.

Written By Anonymous, Springfield, VA (DC Metro) on Monday, June 21, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a set of Bose 251s set up on my underdeck patio. These speakers alone did not provide the outdoor sound that I was looking for. I debated for months and months on what type of subwoofer to use to hopefully enhance the sound and had actually settled on a Klipsch only to find out that it had been discontinued when I was ready to place my order. I had seen the Polk Atrium Sub 10 but was initially put off by its shape as I really didn't need a speaker that looked like a plant stand. Plus, the online pictures made it look bigger than it actually is.

Long story, short...I settled on this subwoofer, installed PAC BB-150A2 Bass Blockers (at the suggestion of Jeff at Crutchfield) in the satellite speaker + leads, routed it all through a Niles volume control switch and I now have the sound that I had been looking for

I am a very satisfied customer and am happy that I went with this product. I gave it only 4 stars because I still think it is kind of a goofy shape but it is stuck back in a corner and is hardly noticed (except for the great bass that it puts out).

    Polk Audio Atrium Sub10

Written By Alf, Baltimore, MD on Wednesday, August 05, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This woofer is designed to work with Sat 30 Satellite speakers. I have Atrium 45's. There is no crossover in the Sub. Connections are parallel. This is less than ideal for the Atrium 45's which continue to receive bass signals. Nevertheless, the sound is quite reasonable and very much improved over the Atrium 45's alone.
