Logitech

Our take on the Logitech® Harmony® 900

by Kristen Schaub

Enjoy easy, full control of your whole system with this stylish remote

Get easy, intuitive control over just about any home theater system with Logitech's Harmony 900. This universal remote combines both IR (infrared) and RF (radio frequency) technology, so you can operate your components even if they're hidden out of sight. The remote's sharp-looking color touchscreen clearly displays common activities, like "watch TV" or "listen to music." When you select an activity, the remote instantly evaluates your system, conveniently turns on or off the appropriate components, and even selects the proper settings for you.

In-hand

Control your gear — even when it's in a cabinet or closet

RF extender

The Harmony 900 emits powerful RF signals for operating components you've placed out of sight. Just plug the included RF extender into a power outlet and stow it behind your hidden components. Then connect the two tiny IR "miniblasters" to the extender, and position them in front of the components. The extender picks up the RF signals sent by the remote and converts them back into IR signals which your devices can understand.

Sculpted buttons

Ergonomic design for easier navigation

The remote's contoured shape fits naturally in the palm of your hand for comfortable operation. Its sculpted, backlit controls are logically and neatly arranged, so you can find the button you're looking for by feel. Plus, the Harmony 900 features a set of red, blue, green, and yellow buttons that correspond to the colored buttons on most Blu-ray player remotes. Use the convenient docking station to charge the remote, and to keep it in an easy-to-find location.

Internet setup

Easy, web-based programming

Harmony's online wizard makes set up a snap. Just plug the remote into your computer with the provided USB cable, visit Harmony's website, and answer some simple questions about your system. That's it — the setup wizard automatically downloads the necessary codes and programs the remote for you. The site remembers your settings, too, so it's easy to reprogram the Harmony 900 later if you change or add components.

    Features

Overview: The Harmony 900 Advanced Universal Remote provides simple, intuitive control of even the most elaborate entertainment system for anyone in the family. The remote setup is accomplished through Harmony's interactive web site. The Harmony 900 Remote can control up to 15 devices, including home automation devices such as light and climate controllers.

Setup: The Harmony Remote Activities are configured through unique Web Wizard tools on HarmonyRemote.com. Using Logitech's Smart State Database of over 225,000 electronic devices from over 5,000 manufacturers, you can easily customize the remote to your system. The database, together with IR learning, ensures support of all infrared-controlled devices made by any manufacturer, including Televisions, A/V Receivers, Cable/Satellite Boxes, VCRs, DVD Players, CD Players, Game Consoles, Mini Systems, Computers, and Home Automation devices.

Wireless RF Connection: The Harmony 900 provides wireless RF connection so there is no need to aim your remote directly at your components, allowing you to even control devices that you keep behind closed cabinet doors and walls (up to 100 feet away). The remotes wireless RF connection is easy to install. The Harmony 900 comes supplied with an IR blaster and two IR blaster extenders that are placed by components you want to control. The Harmony 900 remote sends RF signals to the IR blaster which then turns the remotes RF signals into IR commands that your devices can understand.

Full-Color Touch Screen: The Harmony 900's full-color touch screen gives you easy, one-touch access to any entertainment activity such as watching a DVD, watching TV, or listening to music.

Sculpted Backlit Buttons: The Harmony 900's sculpted backlit buttons allow you to easily operate the remote in the dark, while its ergonomic design allows the unit to fit comfortably in your hand.

One-Touch Operation: The Harmony 900 uses Activity Control to give you one-touch control of your entertainment system. You can use one of the touch-screen's Activity buttons to power on your TV, DVD player, A/V receiver, set all your inputs and even activate play without having to program time consuming macros. Once all of your equipment is "on", the buttons on the remote are also automatically configured for the appropriate operation.

Red/Blue/Green/Yellow Buttons: The remote includes the four "color" buttons (Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow) that correspond to the same buttons found on Blu-Ray player remote controls. These buttons are short cuts for selecting items on some Blu-Ray disc menus. They can also be used for BD-Java interactive operations.

System Off: One push of the off button turns off all the equipment in your system.

Help: If you have a problem completing an activity function, the help button will guide you through the fix using the interactive multi-color display. The remote will ask a series of questions, such as "Is the TV on?" or "Is the volume turned up?" in order to troubleshoot the problem and correct it.

Flash Memory: The settings are stored in a non-volatile flash memory so they will never be lost, even when the battery needs charging.

Lithium-Ion Battery/Recharging Docking Station: The Harmony 900 includes a removable rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, which provides up to a one-week charge under normal use. The remote comes with a docking station that keeps the remote fully charged. Because the docking station is horizontal, it allows the remote to be used while charging.

After years of frustration using 4 different remotes to address TV, sound, cable, & Wii we purchased our Logitech Harmony. It works beautifully and we are very happy! Thank you for suggesting it and sending it out so quickly to us.
    Pros:
Simplifies our access to technology. Ready help available.
    Cons:
Needed help setting it up, but we are in our 70's and not as technologically savvy as young people.

    Easy Logitech

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am using this product with a Yamaha A720, Samsung LED 55" TV, Samsung DVD/BD player, Yamaha CD player,(all from Crutchfield) and Time Warner Cable. The web setup took about 10 min. and worked without any problem. After using for about 1 week I set up the blaster. I thought I would have to return the remote because the blaster would not work. I hooked up the power cable to #2 output and every thing is working to perfection.
    Pros:
Our family has only 1 remote to master and it does not require replacing batteries and keeping up with each component's remote. Our Crutchfield advisor recommended this product and it is a plus for us. Crutchfield delivered in 2 days.at no charge.

    Harmony 900

Written By Prestoj, Williamsburg,VA on Saturday, April 13, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I could write a lengthy review, but it would be a waste of time for all concerned. I'll just say this: I put off buying one of these for a long time. I wish I hadn't. Good product.
    Pros:
Online setup and programming is convenient. All of the remotes for my home theater receiver, satellite receiver, Blu-Ray and CD player are now in a drawer. One device controls everything. My wife and daughter appreciate that they no longer require tutorial updates on manipulating various remote controls.
    Cons:
Be careful when choosing the manufacturer of your various components. To be specific, if you choose Hughes when programming your Direct TV receiver, the remote will not function properly. Even though the Direct TV receivers are manufactured by Hughes, you must choose the Direct TV receiver from the menu or the remote will not function properly. A small glitch, but it can throw you off.

    Harmony® 900 Remote

Written By G Sammons, Boca Raton, FL on Saturday, March 30, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This remote is very easy to use and very easy to set up if you have minimum entry-level personal computer skills, know how to navigate around a Web browser and know what a USB port looks like. After a cursory read through the instructions, I was able to set up my Harmony® 900 Remote for use watching DirecTV®, AppleTV® and my (non-Blu-Ray) Oppo DVD player in about 15 minutes, including manual tweaks, like leaving my 20-year-old+ Yamaha A/V receiver "On." All of my components were in Logitech's online database.

In conclusion, this is a great unit for the money, easy to use, easy to set up, and easy on batteries! Love the color display and, generally speaking, the keypad layouts; I would suggest that the "Mute" and "Jump" buttons could have been larger and/or better placed. I am a frugal shopper, so spending $300 on a remote control is given serious consideration, and I am very happy with my purchase.
    Pros:
Clear, crisp color display Easy to set up Easy to use Lightweight Easy on batteries Potential for specific component programming (manually)
    Cons:
This is nitpicking, admittedly, but my preference would be for larger "Mute" and "Jump" buttons.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Read and follow directions and setup is easy. the RF transmitters work great. Every device I hooked up was in the online database. Now when I change functions from watching a movie, to watching a DVD, to listening to music the tuner automatically changes to the proper mode, components that are not required shut off, and it is all done with the push of one button. It does everything I could have asked for with one remete innstead of four.
    Pros:
    compact and easy to work.
    Cons:
    none

    Jury Is Still Out

Written By Mauiman, Maui, HI on Thursday, January 10, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not too complicated to set up if one takes time and reads instructions. I haven't had to use the RF transmitter/receiver components so can't comment on that. Somewhat disappointed that even though my Sony soundbar was in Logitech's database, the volume and mute control keys on the Harmony did not work for the Sony even though other keys did. Had to go in and customize keys for volume and mute to work on the Harmony. Then had to do that for each "activity", "Watch TV", "Play DVD" -- I couldn't customize the volume/mute keys once and have it work on all activities. Still getting used to the Harmony and can't speak to all its features. But, it is good to have one remote instead of one for each system component.
    Pros:
    Nice appearance Compact size
    Cons:
Didn't program all keys on a compatible system component even though that piece was in Logitech's database.

i finally found a remote that the whole family could use without a 'cheat sheet' laying around, or useing 5 different remotes and getting the setting for different components all screwed up ! the remote is very very easy to use, the setup was not bad, i am not a techy computer guy, just follow the instructions and take your time. it took about an hour, but was pretty painless. the payoff was outstanding. i did read some not so great reviews of the remote and was a little nervous about the purchase, but with crutchfields 60 day like it or return it policy, the choice was easy. again, good product backed by a solid company. thanks
    Pros:
the RF is included with the remote, and operation is great, setup is easy. works with my TV, blueray/cd, yamaha stereo, x box, and wii.
    Cons:
    have not found any

    Not the greatest

Written By BubbaS, Schaumburg, IL on Saturday, November 10, 2012

Im a bit surprised with the high reviews. Ive had other Logitech remotes namely the 880 and the 670. I got this one because I needed the RF capability to solve some problems I had with line of sight to the receivers etc. Anyway it didnt take long to figure out that this remote had a couple issues, one it is much slower response than the others. It has limitations that the others dont have like having the ability to create macros. If you have directv there is no direct CC button to program you must make a macro (info, left, left, down, select) - this is not possible on the 900 - all other harmony remotes can do this.. but not this one that costs 3-4 times more. Crazy. Contacted customer support - maybe there is a software update for this.. no response. The remote sometimes freaks out and has battery issues - strange battery icon Ive had to pull the battery a couple times to fix that. Otherwise the other issue is just switching between devices is VERY slow so if I go from AppleTV back to DirectTV and the volume is set to loud on Directv - you have to wait several seconds before you can turn it down. Ehhh just disappointed. The RF works fine 95% of the time. I did have one time that the RF base had to be reset for no reason. Ive heard the harmony 1 is better but I dont know. Would buy something else if given the choice. Also I hate the fact that I have a remote like the 880 setup with my devices and I cant just replace the remote with this one so complete reprogram.
    Pros:
    RF
    Cons:
Slow to switch between devices No Macro support (harmony 880s and 670s can do this for much lower cost) Much higher cost Flakey battery I dont like the beep that it makes when switching activities Bad customer support - no response from vendor on my inquires

Excellent product. Takes more than an hour to set up if you have multiple devices to control because you have to customize the remote for each of your remote controls. The learn function did not work well for me at all, but the customize the buttons worked perfectly, but it took a long time to customize the harmony for each remote. Many hours. Once you spend the time to customize the remote, you have total control of all your devices and it is a wonderful product. You must read the manual. I had one glitch in which apple tv would show up in an activity that I did not want it involved in and I could not get apple tv to go away, but it did not adversely affect the functioning of the activity. Great product, very expensive.

Good product. Software is outdated and needs to be rewritten to keep pace with competing phone apps. The unit does not have as much functionality as advertised, especially with high-end receivers. The system will not disappoint if you set expectations relatively low.
    Pros:
    Good basic functionality.
    Cons:
    Tech support, programming software.

    There is a God

Written By Pete R, Connecticut on Wednesday, October 24, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It took me less than 30 minutes to set up and program this remote for 5 devices, and that includes the RF interface. My last remote was a Universal branded programmable remote that was far more trouble to program than it was worth. My wife finally destroyed it ( on purpose I suspect), so I reviewed and purchased the Harmony 900. You must be somewhat computer literate to set it up, but it's worth it. The touchscreen control quickly allows you to turn on the appropriate devices with a single action. Honestly it was easier to program than I had expected. I suspect that there are many advanced features that I haven't yet programmed, but very happy so far.
    Pros:
    Easy to set up.
    Cons:
    None so far

Logictech Harmony 900, Overall it works well.

Written By Matt, Dallas, Texas on Monday, April 02, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This remote works well and does what it should do in-terms of combining several remotes into one. It also can create a basic macro (Logictech calls a macro an "activity") It would be nice if you had more control over the activities function and get a little more in depth with them but the function works well. One of the reason I gave this a product a three star review is because you can not run the software on Mac OS 10.7. This Harmony software does not work on a 64 bit Mac OS. You would think that logictech would make sure their software would work on the newest of software from Mac. There may be fewer mac users than PC users in this world but we do tend update and intergrate our systems with the newest of new technology. I did eventually run windows 7 on my mac and was able to program my remote flawlessly.
    Pros:
I don't see any pros for this remote. it does what it is built to do and it does that ok...
    Cons:
Does not work with Mac OS 10.7. or 64 bit machines.

    Good, so far.

Written By Kaiserphoto, Chesapeake, VA. on Saturday, March 24, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a Harmony One and loved it for the first 2 years, then it just died. Then got a cheaper universal remote that drove me nuts, so I'm trying the 900. So far it's been pretty easy. I do like that it's also RF. Now I just need to figure out which ones I want to run off of IR and which on RF. I wish Crutchfield's offered the SquareTrade extended warranty on this device, given what happened to my last Harmony remote, but you can get it directly from them.
    Pros:
Easy setup & to make changes. RF capability
    Cons:
Been trying to go into the advanced set up again, and can't find my way back.

    Fantastic Remote

Written By JayG, Arlington, VA on Thursday, March 22, 2012

I received this remote as a birthday present last year. This is hands-down the best universal remote I've ever had. The "activities" functions make it easy to use for my girlfriend and other's that are not good with technology and it's fairly easy to set up. Overall I would recommend this product to anyone in the market for a higher end universal remote.
    Pros:
    Ease of use and versatility.
    Cons:
Pricey and setting up the favorite's icons is a little overly complicated.
