Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Alpine CDE-HD149BT

by Ken Nail

Loaded with features and ready to roll

If you're in the hunt for a do-it-all car stereo, look no further than Alpine's CDE-HD149BT CD receiver. It packs a serious sonic punch and you'll also get features like an HD Radio® tuner, built-in Bluetooth®, and Pandora® Internet radio control, too. Alpine's user-friendly controls round out the package, with an innovative new smartphone-based app for tuning your system.

Sound control, just a swipe away

Alpine puts pro-level audio tuning in the palm of your hand with TuneIt™, an award-winning smartphone app designed exclusively for select Alpine receivers. Download the free app onto your iPhone® or Android™ smartphone, and you can create a user profile with information specific to you, your vehicle, and your Alpine system. Then it's a simple matter to import sound settings for your car from 3,000 options in Alpine's database, or use the app to adjust the receiver's time correction feature, 9-band parametric equalizer, frequency filters, and Media Xpander yourself. Save up to 100 different sound settings — whatever you want to match your music or taste. TuneIt even lets you create a profile on Facebook so you can share settings with other users.

Bluetooth® for hands-free calling and audio streaming

If you don't have Bluetooth in your car, you'll love the capabilities the CDE-HD149BT offers. No more fumbling for your phone when you get a call — pair your Bluetooth equipped phone with the receiver and you'll talk hands-free when you get a call. And since the receiver imports your phonebook, outgoing calls are easy to place too. If you store music or stream audio programming on your smartphone, you'll be able to listen over your car's audio system without any wires — simply select Bluetooth Audio as your source and tap into all the content you enjoy.

Built-in HD Radio™ with iTunes® tagging

Alpine's HD Radio tuner lets you tune in digital AM/FM broadcasts, significantly pumping up the sound quality. Participating FM stations sound about as good as a CD, while AM stations offer enhanced reception similar to traditional FM. Plus, when you connect your iPod® and tune into an HD Radio station, you can "tag" songs you like for later purchase from the iTunes® store.

Pandora® in your car

Your smartphone and the free Pandora app are the key to enjoying the variety of musical options available on Pandora. Android and BlackBerry® users get full control through the Bluetooth connection, while iPhone lovers just plug in through the USB port. You can change stations, skip tracks, and rate songs just like you do online.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Alpine stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

      HD+Pandora+SiriusXM Radio

HD Radio: With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. HD Radio lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-like sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. Best of all, HD Radio is 100% subscription free.

      • Station Text: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. The built-in HD Radio tuner displays song title, artist and station information on the display of the Alpine CDE-HD148 BT.
      • Multicasting: Multicasting is the ability to broadcast multiple program streams over a single AM/FM frequency. this increases the amount and diversity of content choices. A maximum of eight multicast station channels (HD1-HD8) can be selected on this unit.
      • Preset Tuning: The built-in tuner provides 12 FM and 6 AM preset stations. Stations can be preset manually or automatically. Sub-program services of multicast stations are not included in the automatic memory search.
      • Search Functions: The Alpine CDE-HD148 BT offers various search functions to help you find the analog or digital AM/FM stations you are looking for. You can search for only digital AM/FM stations (Digital mode), or both analog & digital AM/FM stations (Hybrid mode). Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. Distance seek tuning allows both strong and weak stations to be tuned. You can even search for a radio station by its frequency, using the head unit's rotary encoder.
      • Listening Modes: The head unit provides four reception methods in order to receive Digital & Analog AM/FM signals according to your own preference and signal strength. Choose from Hybrid (receives both digital and analog stations; if the digital signal is weak, this mode will switch to receive the analog radio signal automatically), Digital (receives only digital radio signals even when the digital signal is weak), Digital MC (receives the digital radio signal while listening to a sub-program service of a multicast station), or Analog (only receives the analog radio signal, even when the digital signal is strong).
      • Live Mode: While receiving a live AM/FM broadcast, you can select an optimized receiving method according to your own preference and the signal strength. Choose from Analog (while receiving a live broadcast this unit will only receive the analog radio signal even when the digital signal can be received), Digital (while receiving a live broadcast this unit will keep receiving the digital radio signal even when the digital signal is week), or Listen (while receiving a live broadcast this unit will use one of the Listening Modes - Hybrid/Digital/Digital MC/Analog).
      • FM Tone Quality: You can set your preferred tonal quality, when listening to FM analog radio stations. You can choose between HiFi (high-quality sound), Normal (standard setting), or Stable (noise control).
      • iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from and HD Radio broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store. You can "tag" up to 50 songs. Your iPod/iPhone must have at least 50MB of free space to "tag" and transfer songs. iTunes 7.4 or later is required to purchase "tagged" songs.
Note: More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to www.hdradio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

The head unit will display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label. The unit will also display station identification and song/artist information from select music apps.
      • iPod/iPhone Charging: While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the head unit's USB connection will power and charge your iPod/iPhone. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it. This unit does not charge the iPad.

Audio Enhancements: The CDE-HD148BT offers the following audio adjustments to enhance your in-car listening experience.

      • Media Xpander: Alpine's exclusive Media Xpander is engineered to bring out the musical details lost in compressed media, and it is adjustable per source to get the most out of your digital audio media. The Media Expander makes vocals or instruments sound distinct regardless of the music source. You can customize the Media Xpander to suit your personal taste by adjusting the level (0-8) for Bass, Mids, and Highs. The FM radio, CD, USB, iPod, Pandora, Bluetooth, and Aux will be able to reproduce the music more clearly even in vehicles with a lot of road noise.
      • Time Correction: This unit is able to delay the audio signal to the speakers closest to the listener with its built-in Time Correction feature. This effectively creates a perception of increased distance for those speakers. Time Correction allows the listener to be placed at an equal distance between the left and right speakers for optimum staging. You can adjust the distance (0-132.7") of each speaker and subwoofer to the listener.
      • Spatial: This feature allows you to change the soundstage of your music in the vehicle. You can select from three modes.
        • Front Wide: Creates the effect of widening the front sound field by delaying the sound of the front speakers.
        • Rear Wide: Creates the effect of making the front sound image clear and far by delaying the sound of the rear speakers.
        • Off: No effect is applied (default)
      • Source Volume Level: The output level of each source (Tuner, Disc, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, Pandora, Aux) is individually adjustable from -14 to + 14 dB.

TuneIt App: TuneIt is an easy-to-use sound-tuning app that also offers Facebook notifications. Download this free app onto your Apple iPhone 4/4S/5 (via iTunes) or Android smartphone (coming soon via Google Play) and create a user profile about your vehicle and sound system. Your iPhone must be connected to the CDE-HD148BT via the appropriate Alpine iPod connector cable (500KCU445I, sold separately) or the Dock-/Lightning-cable that came with your iPhone. Your Android smartphone must support A2DP/AVRCP/SPP Bluetooth profiles and be paired with the Alpine receiver. Your iPhone or Android smartphone will also need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi.

      • Sound Tuning: The TuneIt app turns your iPhone or Android smartphone into a sound tuning interface for the CDE-HD148BT . Follow the simple TuneIt graphical instructions on your phone to adjust sound settings for your specific vehicle or choose from pre-made settings in the database. Settings that can be adjusted include Time Correction, Parametric EQ, Crossover, and Media Xpander. As you change settings on your smartphone, you will hear the results, so you can customize the sound to exactly how you want it. You can make and save up to 100 different sound settings in your account, which is helpful if you want various settings to use for specific types of music. After tuning your system, upload your settings to the Alpine Cloud Server to share them with other Alpine fans. You can also check out other user's settings and rate them. The more active you are, the higher your profile status progresses within the app.
      • Facebook Notifications: The TuneIt app also keeps you in touch with your Facebook friends. When you receive a notification, you will get a visual alert on the smartphone and the head unit, plus a sound alert through your car speakers. The visual notification includes the Facebook icon and the sender's name, with the profile picture shown on the phone. In order to receive Facebook notifications on the head unit, the TuneIt app must be the active app on your smartphone.
Note: Access to TuneIt will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or smartphone to connect to the Internet. You will also need to turn on the GPS function of your phone.

Beep Guide: This function will give audible feedback with varying tones depending upon the button pressed. The volume of this feature can be set from 0-7.

      Display Features

Fold-Down Detachable Face: The Alpine CDE-HD149BT features a manual fold-down face-plate which is detachable to deter theft. A hard-plastic face-case is provided.  An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. The fold-down face requires 1.875" of space to open.

2-Line LCD: This unit is equipped with a 2-Line white-backlit LCD, so you can easily view AM/FM stations, CD-Text, and ID-3/WMA/AAC tag information.

Text Display: Text information, such as the disc name and the track name, will be displayed if playing a CD text compatible disc. It is also possible to display the folder name, the file name, and the tag information, while playing a MP3/WMA/AAC disc or USB device. This unit can scroll the disc and track names recorded on CD-Text disc, as well as the text information of MP3/WMA/AAC files, folder names, and tags. There are two Text Scroll settings.

      • Auto: The CD text information, the information of folder and file names, and the tags are scrolled automatically.
      • Manual: The display is scrolled when a disc is loaded or when a track is changed.

      Clock/Calendar Display: The CDE-HD149BT provides a clock (12hr) & calendar (mm/dd/yy) display.

Variable Color Button Illumination: The head unit lets you choose between Blue, Green, Red, or Amber button illumination. The LCD text will remain white.

Auto Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead (orange); when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Demo Mode: This unit has a demonstration feature for its display which can be turned On or Off in the menu.

      Remote Control

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Optional Wireless Remote: The Alpine CDE-HD148BT is wireless remote control ready. Simply add on the Alpine RUE-4202 IR remote (500RUE4202, sold separately) to make it even easier to control the head unit's functions.

Bought this for 2002 sierra decks sounds excellent, very easy to use. I use deck for apple and android works excellent for both. Bluetooth works great, phone is very clear. I am 43 and this is my first stereo purchase in 25 or so years and am glad I chose crutchfield and alpine, they make install easy. also bought jbl front speaker's and kicker rears, installed kicker 10 inch sub preamped 100 watt. Can't be happier my wife keeps stealing my truck though she loves it and says it sounds like a concert inside. Thanks crutch field I will purchase from you again probably soon so I can get my truck back.

      Honda S2000 Awesome Deck!

Awesome deck! Very sleek and clean. No slots in the front for cd and the aux is in the back which makes the face look very clean and no wires are showing. You can tell the big difference between the stock deck (i have this in my Honda S2000 MY07) and it is night and day. Install was a breeze since Crutchfield provides everything needed and pictures of install.
      Pros:
Amazing quality and sound. Very clean looking and very user friendly (as opposed to Pioneer). Seamless
      Cons:
Pirce is a little too high but when I got it, it was worth the extra money for the display.

2004 Ford Ranger FX4 Super Cab

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a replacement / upgrade for my truck. I also purchased the SiriusXM SXV200V1 tuner with this which was simple plug and play into the back of this receiver. The Alpine is a tight fit in my dash (depth). Once I adjusted the rear "A" mount (from the free dash mount kit) to pull the top of the receiver down a little, it snapped right into my dash nicely. There are no rear pictures of this unit on Crutchfield so let me let you know that the rear USB is a "dongle" and does have a generous length USB extension cable included. I plugged the extension cord into the dongle and then wrapped the union with electrical tape to ensure the they could not unplug. Let me tell you, this receiver "ROCKS". I have it joined with an Alpine KTP-445 amp. I have tried all of the features on it except for the IPOD (I don't own one) and Pandora. All other features do work as I have checked. It has connected up with my Android phone. The USB is excellent and easy to search. The SiriusXM works perfectly. The HD radio works fine. All features are fairly easy to access and use. Overall, WOW, this unit looks awesome and performs the same. This is not my first Alpine receiver, and I have owned other brands. This one blows them all out of the water, hands down! This is definitely worth every penny! Sound is unbelievably crystal clear from the unit, although I do need to upgrade my speakers soon because they are still stock. Bottom line, I would recommend, no questions asked.
      Pros:
Quality, sound clarity, features, ease of use, 3 sets of 4v preouts
      Cons:
      None

      First and last Alpine deck

Written By TheoD, Austin on Monday, May 13, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This deck has yet to work with my iPhone 5 and the TuneIt app. I called Crutchfield and they said oh gee call Alpine we dont have a clue. I called Alpine and the guy that answered laughed when I told him that TuneIt Wasnt working. He didn't even know the product well enough to know that Alpine hadn't released an update for the deck only the app. Pandora won't stream correctly unless you start it first on the phone and then plug it in. Detachable face is hard to install back on to the unit. Controls are layered and cumbersome. Overall this deck didn't sound very good when compared to the Kenwood Excelon that it replaced. Lighting didn't even come close to matching my the dash lights on my 2012 Wrangler. Come on Alpine I know you can do much better than this!!!
      Pros:
The design of the face looks nice and buttons are placed decently.
      Cons:
TuneIt app never worked for my iPhone5. Pandora won't launch correctly. Lighting options are not very good. Clunky design for menus that are too layered. Tech support from Alpine not very good. Feels like this product was rushed to market.

This is the first Apine I have owned in many years. The sound quality is what i remember from Alpine ,very good. audio settings and general deck settings are very easy to figure out and they are very easy to set , i-pod funtions on the other hand do take some studying and time to command. overall it is a very fine deck and sound quality is second to none. I do agree with another reviewer that the display could have been done much better.
      Pros:
Sound quality, ease of most funtions .
      Cons:
I-pod controls a bit tricking but if you read the manual enough times it gets better.

Upgraded from the cde 123 which I liked a lot just lacked the android compatibility I wanted. Hated having to tether my iPod touch from my phone to use Pandora. Also jade the same issues as on other reviewer eiththe android and Pandora connection. Hands down alpine has one of the best customer service departments in the business. Very helpful and actually replied to every call or email I sent. On this unit the eq is great makes fine tuning a breeze. And the 3 line text is great as well. Only issue I am having now is with my old 32 gig iPod video. Hook it up and I can scan all music by artist and such but once I select a song, it will only play that song. Can hit skip till my fingers bleed and it will not goto next track. In shuffle mode it will goto next song but only when the current one ends, can not skip there either. Not sure if iI'm the only one. Will have to test with iPod touch to see if that's the same. I would put this unit up against any single din on the market right now. Very nice CD player for the price.
      Pros:
Every connection out there. 3 line text. Quad color illumination
      Cons:
Slight issues with Pandora from android and iPod issues. As with all new devices I'm sure there are a few kinks that need to be worked out. A firmware update will probably make all known issues non existing in a short time.

There is a reason that Alpine delayed the hd149bt release by 2 months. This deck feels unfinished. From its inability to connect with the Tune-it app since its release, to the power antenna randomly going up when listening source other than radio. Alpine should have had more R&D into this mid level deck, before releasing it.
      Pros:
      Bluetooth Native Pandora control
      Cons:
detachable face is tough to reinstall (especially at night) tune it app has not worked for iPhone, since its release Antenna randomly goes up when listening to sources other than the radio For Alpines single din flagship, its still missing features alpine offered 10 years ago (i.e. ai net, bass link, bio light display, variable color key pad display,i-personalize.. I could go on and on

      Great single DIN car stereo

Written By adrenalinex, Orange County, CA on Tuesday, May 07, 2013

Has every input known to man. Sounds great! Alpine even topped their last line. Burr-Brown DAC's, 9 band parametric EQ, sound delays for particular speakers based on distance from the driver, etc.

I did have a little difficulty getting Pandora to stream in Pandora mode with my Android phone, but I got the problem solved. Here's the playbook for anyone else having similar trouble..

Alpine's tech support was great. They walked me through my issue in getting the Android HTC Evo 3D (Android v. 4.0.3) to pair via Bluetooth with my Alpine Alpine CDE-HD149BT head unit so I could use Pandora mode.

I had read elsewhere that the Pandora via USB was meant only for iPhones. Androids will always stream Pandora to the head unit via Bluetooth, and NOT through USB. Alpine confirmed this was true.

Alpine had me check to make sure I was using the latest version of the Pandora app for Android (which was 4.2).

The crucial parts were the following four things-

      1. ON THE PHONE, IN THE PANDORA APP SETTINGS, under "Advanced," the "Bluetooth for Automotive" must be selected.

      2. ON THE HEAD UNIT, hold down the "audio" button so that you get into the settings. the different settings there are, for example.. general, display, tuner, IPOD&USB, Application, etc. Select "Application," then "Alpine APP," and change the setting from "USB" to "BT". Then, exit those menus.

      3. ON THE PHONE, go into "Settings," then "Bluetooth" (where the list of your Bluetooth devices is). Click settings for the "Alpine
      Pros:
Has every input known to man. Sounds great! Alpine even topped their last line. Burr-Brown DAC's, 9 band parametric EQ, sound delays for particular speakers based on distance from the driver, etc.
      Cons:
Dangerous to try to read song titles and artist names of mp3's on unit while driving.

The radio is very nice and simple to use, the only issue that I had was the lack of Pandora compatibility with my iPhone 5. I could use Pandora through bluetooth audio and iPod USD, but not in the Pandora mode on the unit.
      Pros:
      Easy to use and install
