Sonos

Our take on the Sonos PLAY:5

by Tara W.

All the music you want — anywhere in your home

Sonos® systems let you tap into music from your personal collection and from the Internet, anywhere in your house. The compact Sonos PLAY:5 makes it easy to get started or add an additional room — it's a self-contained music system with built-in speakers. You'll get top-notch, room-filling sound from a player that easily fits on a counter in the kitchen or an end table in the living room. The PLAY:5 teams up five drivers — two tweeters, two midranges and a subwoofer — with five tailor-matched amplifiers to deliver full-bodied, lifelike sound.

Exceptionally easy multi-room music

Sonos makes setup easy

Place Sonos music players like the PLAY:5 in every room where you want to listen to music. The players connect to your home network — one player makes a wired connection to your router and communicates with all other players using Sonos' proprietary wireless network. This network, known for its extensive range and superior performance, gives you house-wide access to tunes stored on your PC along with a wealth of Internet audio choices. (We recommend adding the Sonos BRIDGE to connect all players to your network wirelessly.)

Sonos controllers

You probably already own a Sonos controller

You can use an iPhone®, iPod touch®, iPad®, or Android™ phone to control any and all Sonos players. A free download turns your smartphone and tablet into a full-fledged Sonos controller. Easily navigate and search through playlists and tracks stored on your computer, or select an Internet radio station. Create customized playlists on the fly for individual rooms or for playback over your entire Sonos system. You can also mute or adjust the volume of each of your players.

Rhapsody®, Pandora® Internet radio, SiriusXM, and more at your fingertips

The Sonos system works seamlessly with a host of Internet-based digital music services, including Rhapsody, Pandora, Spotify, last.fm™, Napster®, and SiriusXM Internet Radio. Rhapsody offers instant access to millions of songs and ad-free radio stations through your Sonos Controller. SIRIUS Internet Radio gives you access to over 80 channels of programming. Every Sonos system includes free 30-day trials of these two services, so you can start listening the moment you take it out of the box. Pandora and last.fm create customized Internet radio streams just for you — all you have to do is enter the name of your favorite song or artist. And because Sonos connects directly to the Internet for all of these music services, you don't even have to turn on your PC.

MOG

MOG — over 15 million songs, available instantly

MOG is an award-winning online music service with one of the largest and best-sounding streaming catalogs in the industry. It's the only service to offer all of its music in the 320 kbps MP3 format — that higher bit rate translates to better sound. In fact, we use it frequently in the Crutchfield Labs to test high-end audio gear. MOG's "Primo" service ($9.99/month) gives you unlimited, ad-free access to their extensive music library of over 15 million songs on a wide range of devices including Sonos® network music players, Samsung TVs, your computer, iPad®, iPhone®, and Android™ devices.

Play music stored on your iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod touch®

Sonos now gives you convenient wireless access to music and podcasts stored in the Music app of iOS devices, for playback throughout your entire Sonos system. This function works on devices running iOS6 or later (see below for full list of compatible Apple devices). The system even lets you connect multiple Apple players at once. For instance, you can queue up songs from your iPhone to play in the kitchen while you cook, and your spouse can stream a podcast in the den at the same time.

Expand your Sonos system

You can have up to 32 Sonos music players in your system, and each one can play an independent selection of individual tracks or playlists. Listen to jazz in the den while your spouse plays rock music in the kitchen, or pump a single playlist of songs throughout the entire house during a party.

    Features

Overview: The Sonos Play:5 (formerly the S5) is a wireless music system that allows you to enjoy music anywhere in your home, and control it from your PC or Mac, your smartphone or tablet, or the optional Sonos Controller (sold separately). The Sonos Play:5 creates room-filling, high-performance sound using an integrated five-way speaker system driven by five built-in digital amplifiers. In a multi-room sound system, the first Sonos player is connected to your home network, and each subsequent Sonos player, can be wired or completely wireless.

Note: The Sonos Play:5 works seamlessly with the complete range of Sonos products.

Versatile Placement: You can position the Sonos Play:5 wherever you find the sound most enjoyable. Its compact size and inset handle make it easy to place the Play:5 on the kitchen counter, or carry it out to the patio with you.

Creating a Stereo Pair: For a wider stereo experience, you can combine two Play:5 units in the same room to create a pair of stereo speakers. In this configuration, one unit serves as the left channel and the other serves as the right channel. The Controller software can be used to configure the units in this manner.

    Wireless Technology

SonosNet Wireless Mesh Network: The Sonos Play:5 brings great sounding music wirelessly to any room in your house, without a big wiring project. SonosNet, a proprietary wireless mesh network technology, provides superior wireless range for whole-house coverage, ensures synchronous music playback, and avoids sources of wireless interference. The transmitting range of the Play:5's built-in wireless system is approximately 100 feet, depending upon your home's layout.

Note: Thick walls, microwave ovens, and the presence of other wireless devices can interfere with or block the wireless network signals of the Sonos Digital Music Signal. When interference occurs, you can relocate the Play:5, change the wireless channel, make a wired (Ethernet) connection, or add a Sonos Bridge between the router and the Play:5 to extend the wireless range.

Multi-Zone Compatibility: You can place a Play:5 in each zone where you want to listen to music. The Sonos Digital Music System can accept up to 32 Sonos players. With multiple zones, you can play the same song in different rooms, or different songs in different rooms.

Sonos Controller Software: The supplied setup disc contains the software for the Sonos Controller, which allows you to control the Sonos Digital Music System from your PC or Mac. The supplied Sonos Controller software is compatible with Windows XP (SP3), Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Macintosh OS X (10.6 or higher) operating systems.

Smartphone/Tablet Control: You can wirelessly control the Sonos system with your smartphone (iPhone or Android) or tablet running one of the following apps:

    • Sonos Controller for Android: The free Sonos Controller application is available for Android smartphones or tablets from the Android Market.
    • Sonos Controller for iPhone or iPad: The free Sonos Controller application is available for the iPhone, iPod touch, or the iPad from the Apple App Store, or it can be downloaded from iTunes and synced to your device.

Sonos Controller: The Play:5 can be controlled by the Sonos Controller (sold separately). The Sonos Controller works exclusively with the Sonos Digital Music Wireless System, and allows you to control all of your music and all of your zones wirelessly from the palm of your hand.

Adjustable Audio Controls: Using the Sonos Controller interface, you can optimize sound performance using zone-specific bass, treble, balance, and loudness controls. In addition, you can adjust the volume by individual zone or by groups of zones.

    Audio Section

Room-Filling Sound: The Sonos Play:5 provides crystal-clear, room-filling sound through various advanced sound technologies. The Play:5 incorporates an all-digital architecture design for precise sound reproduction. The Sonos Play:5 utilizes a five-driver bass-reflex speaker system individually powered by five dedicated digital amplifiers for room-filling sound. The Play:5 offers adjustable bass, treble, balance, and loudness controls for optimal sound performance.

5 Speakers/5 Amplifiers: The Play:5 uses five state-of the-art digital amplifiers individually coupled with the unit's five speakers to deliver superior sound to any room. The wireless music system provides crystal-clear, high-quality sound that rivals much larger, more complicated systems. The components of the Play:5 include:

    • 5 Class-D Amplifiers: five state-of-the-art, great sounding amplifiers that are light weight, powerful and very energy efficient in standby and use
    • Tweeters: two tweeters create a crisp and accurate high frequency response
    • Midrange Drivers: two 3.0" dedicated mid-range drivers ensure the faithful reproduction of mid-range frequencies crucial for accurate playback of vocals and instruments
    • Subwoofer: a dedicated 3.5" subwoofer driver provides deep, powerful bass you can feel

Acoustic Port: The acoustic port on the rear of the unit serves two purposes: it is vital to the sound output of the Play:5, and it doubles as a convenient handle when moving it from one room to another.

All-Digital Sound Architecture: From the recording studio to your home the music is reproduced as the artist intended. All filter settings, active equalization, and time-alignment are done in the digital domain through state-of-the-art DSP circuitry so there is absolutely no loss of audio quality or energy.

Controls: The Play:5 only has a mute button and a volume control, both mounted on the top of the unit. Between the buttons lies a Zone Player LED status indicator, which flashes white when powering up or connecting to the Sonos Digital Music System, and lights solid when powered up and connected to the music system.

Optional Wireless Subwoofer: The optional Sonos Sub is a wireless subwoofer that can be associated with the Play:5 to enhance the sound in the room. The set-up procedure for the Sub adjusts the crossover automatically so it seamlessly integrates with the Play:5. Through the Sonos Controller software, you can also set the phase and level of the subwoofer to match it to the Play:5's output.

    Network Requirements

Home Network: To access Internet music services, Internet radio, and any digital music stored on your computer or Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device, your home network must meet the following requirements:

    • High-speed DSL/Cable modem, or fiber-to-the-home broadband connection for proper playback of Internet-based music services. If your Internet service provider only offers Satellite Internet access, you may experience playback issues due to fluctuations in download rates.
    • If your modem is not a modem/router combination and you want to take advantage of Sonos' automatic online updates, or stream music from an Internet-based music service, you must install a router in your home network. If you don't have a router, you will need to purchase and install one before setting up your system.
      • If you are going to use a Sonos controller application on an Android smartphone, iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or other tablet, you may need a wireless router in your home network.
    • Connect at least one Sonos component to your home network router using an Ethernet cable, and then you can add other Sonos components wirelessly.
    • For best results, you should connect the computer or NAS drive that contains your personal music library collection to your home network router using an Ethernet cable.

Automatic Updates: The Play:5 allows for free automatic software updates so you will always have the newest features and music services to enjoy. Simply register the Play:5 and Sonos will automatically notify you when software updates are available. By simply pressing one button your system updates itself.

    Connections

2-Way Ethernet Port: There are two rear-panel female RJ-45 connectors for plugging in Category 5 Ethernet cables. You can connect a router, computer, or an additional network device, such as a network-attached storage (NAS) device. Specifications: 10/100 Mbps, auto MDI/MDIX.

Analog Input: You can connect an external source, such as a portable music player or a CD player, to the unit's rear-panel 3.5mm minijack port. The input jacks automatically detect a device is connected, and the source appears in the system. Music from the external source can be played in any zone. The volume is controlled by the Sonos Digital Music System, however, the playback (pause, music selection, etc.) must be controlled at the source.

Headphone Output: The Play:5 is equipped with a rear-panel 3.5mm headphone output for connecting a set of headphones. The headphone jack is auto-detecting, so when you plug-in a set of headphones, the Play:5's built-in speakers automatically mute.

Power Input: The Sonos Play:5 operates on ordinary household current using the supplied AC power adapter and cord. The Play:5 is capable of accepting 115/120 Volts AC or 230/240 Volts AC.

The best investment in audio equipment I have made. I have two of these units. One is in my gym, the other is in the family room. We stream Rdio and MP3s to it. Seamless connection. Audio quality is great. During the summer we put the unit in our patio and blast the music. We have about 1/2 acre in the back, and quality of the sound is great no matter where you stand in the yard.

    Exceptional!

Written By Pete D, Charlottesville on Sunday, February 17, 2013

The Play:5 has completely exceeded my very high expectations! It seamlessly enables me to access all of my digital collection, my favorite radio stations from around the world, and so much more. Set up was ridiculously easy - worth the steep price of admission in my mind. The sound is pretty amazing for such a small unit - way better than anything I've heard. If you are on the fence, buy it now!
    Pros:
    Everything about it

I was nervous setting this up. I had such high expectations and have been disappointed by so many electronics, but I was VERY pleasantly surprised that set up and ease of use is as advertised. Never have i done anything so quickly. Great sound in all three (one sonos 5 and two sonos 3). I used the bridge connected directly to my Verizon Fios router (older version) I can now play a variety of music all over the house, including outside for parties. I set up the app controller for my android phone as well as my ipad and everything works just perfectly. LOVE love love this product!
    Pros:
    Just about everything

    Replaced my Bose Sound Dock

Written By Mark B, Denver, CO on Wednesday, January 02, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was a bit concerned when I decided to replace my old Bose Sound Dock with the Sonos system for two reasons: 1) I was concerned the Sonos might not sound as good and 2) my family is used to the Sound Docks and I was not sure the iPhone app would be as simple. Turns out my concrens were completely unfounded. The wireless sound is excellent and the iPhone and iPad apps are top notch. I particularly like being able to stream from both the i-device AND my iTunes library on hard drive. Top notch and a breeze to install.
    Pros:
Great sound and even easier to set up than I thought.
    Cons:
My teenagers can change my music from upstairs!

WOW! The SONOS Play 5 is even better than I thought. Setup was as easy as it gets. The sound is terrific and I am very hard to please on that front. It makes our living room fun to be in. I could not be more pleased. This is the second SONOS device I have purchased, the first being the "Connect". That also works great. The real sound benefit comes from playing my own high quality music stored on an NAS device(network hard drive). The iPhone app is works well as a controller so that makes this a true no-brainer.

    Sonos 5 Play

Easy setup and great sound. If you enjoy listening to streaming music and want to avoid the hassles of wires, this is the system for you.
    Pros:
Excellent sound. No wires. Can you your computer, Android phone or iPhone has the controller.
    Cons:
The bridge is on my first floor and was not able to connect to a speaker on the third floor. I will most likely buy another bridge.

Great sound and access to music in the Internet

Written By Albert, Gainesville, FL on Saturday, December 08, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow! What elegant design and simple set up and operation. You'd think this had been created by Apple. Once you get the Sonos Bridge (free with this purchase) set up (very easy), then you just plug in the Play 5 and push the button on top. Open up the Sonos app on your computer, iPad, iPhone or iPod, and get into, say, Pandora, and the richest sound comes out of the Play 5 that you can possibly imagine. My wife, who is an extreme critic of my tech forays came running into the room to find out what was making this beautiful, base-rich, yet vey clean sound. The Sonos app works great and I can control it on my Mac, my iPad or my iPod. Just make sure they are all linked to the same Sonos account when you sign up for the apps. There is a headphone jack and an audio input jack on the back and the Play 5 can be paired with another Play 5 for greater stereo separation, if you want it, but the sound is SO GOOD out of one that it really fills up a good-sized room. Worth every penny and more! Why didn't I do this sooner?
    Pros:
Elegant design Easy set up Fantastic sound (rich bass and clean treble) Portability from room to room (bass port doubles as carrying handle, but you do have to reconnect with the Bridge when you power down to move the Play 5) Pairing option for greater stereo separation Input and output jacks Quality Ethernet and audio cables supplied Excellent computer and mobile app controls
    Cons:
    None

Don't know why i didnt buy this sooner

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been thinking of getting a Sonos system for sometime. When i saw the offer to get a free sonos bridge with a qualifying purchase i did not hesitate. The product is awesome. I was up and running within ten minutes of opening the box. I am already a sirius subscriber and it works seamlessly. The sound is amazing and the controller apps are well laid out and well thought out. Depending on the size of your music library it may take a few minutes to have sonos to find and "index" your music on your computer. But this is a one time issue. Then when you add new music to your computer you just have sonos look for it. while this indexing is happenign you can still listen to other music sources. I highly recommend this and have been doing so to friends and family. I am getting another one to place in my den as i have this one in my living room. Sonos has hooked me as a customer.
    Pros:
Easy of set up. Finally all my music isnt trapped on my upstairs computer. Sound is great. The app is easy to navigate. They just made a sofware upgrade and you can now send music to the speaker from any apple device.
    Cons:
the only cons i have encountered so far is that if poer goes out our you move the unit you have to get it to reconnect with the bridge. it onl takes a few minutes to do, so not so bad. The other one is the fact that i do not see a way yet to save favorite stations in iheart radio. they are easy enough to search for, but would be nice to have a favorite list.

Thanks for making my wife happy and me a hero. It is a very easy system to install and setup. We have just one Play5, and will be looking to add more in the future. The user interface on the iPad is very easy to use and it's great to have a large variety of music sources. We are not true audiophiles, but just want good sounding audio and ease of use, and with this system we have it.

    Exceeded Expectation

Received item and had issue updating Sonos software from the CD install program. Called Crutchfield Tech Support and was directed to call Sonos Support. While waiting on a Sonos callback, I downloaded the latest software from their web site and proceeded with the installation. Had an issue with updating the Sonos bridge. When Thomas from Sonos support called, I explained the "new" issue and he remotely connected to my PC. Discovered that the bridge IP address was the same as an old printer I no longer have and in my wireless router I had that IP address blocked for any internet traffic. Once that rule was deleted, everything updated correctly, all components connected and the music started to play. Although I did have some issues, they were resolved quickly and the sound and ease of use exceeded my expectations. Great Product. I would recommend this to anyone who wants this capability.
    Pros:
Ease of setup and use. Great Technical support.

Could be much better - Airplay will probably kill Sonos

Written By EM, Miami on Monday, November 05, 2012

In all honesty I believe Airplay will kill Sonos. I have had a S5 for a year now, not able to play all of my music directly from my Time Capsule, Sonos recommends using a third party software to do an additional back up in Time Capsule, so I have in my TC my music twice (taking up additional storage space) just to be able to play it with my S5. Sonos states that they are airplay/Itunes compatible, but in all honesty, you need to buy an airport base to connect to the S5 (so much for wireless music) so it simply makes the S5 bulkier and a bigger investment.
More and more companies are coming out with similar speakers that work with Airplay, so if you purchase a song from Itunes you can immediately play it on an Airplay speaker instead of doing an additional backup in your TC and wait to update your music index in your Sonos.

So keep it in mind if your looking for a new wireless speaker.
    Pros:
    Good sound, easy set up
    Cons:
Not airplay compatible, music index requires updating, not capable of playing your whole Itunes Library.
