Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Pioneer DEH-P9400BH

by Ken Nail

Sharp styling, with features to match
The elegant design of Pioneer's DEH-P9400BH CD receiver gives you quick and easy access to a wealth of features. You'll find Bluetooth® for hands-free calling and audio streaming, an HD Radio™ tuner for the best in radio sound, and dual USB inputs for your music, too. Add compatibility with Pandora® Internet radio through your iPhone® and a variable-color display that you can tailor to match your lighting, and you've got one impressive package.

Pioneer DEH-P9400BH

Bluetooth for safety and convenience
Once you pair up your phone, the receiver will mute the music when a call comes in, displaying the incoming number or contact name. Just press a button and talk — no fumbling for your phone. The receiver stores your phone book if you like, so outgoing calls are easy too. Plus, you can stream the music on your phone to this receiver, with no wires to get tangled up.

HD Radio for unparalleled radio sound
HD Radio's sonic advantages are impressive — FM broadcasts that are near-CD quality, with AM that's as good as what you're used to on FM. And if your local HD Radio station employs multicasting, this Pioneer allows you to tune into multiple channels on the same frequency, so you'll have more entertainment choices. Plus, the iTunes® tagging feature lets you save song info when your iPod's connected, so you can purchase the tracks you like later.

Pandora® Internet radio
If you've got an iPhone, you know the options available for streaming music. The DEH-P9400BH features Pioneer's App Mode, which offers limited control of many popular streaming music services. With your iPhone® connected, you'll have excellent control Pandora® Internet radio stations, including station selection and "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" ratings from the face of the receiver.

Play your music and streaming sources
The DEH-P9400BH sports two USB inputs on cords connected to the rear panel, so you won't have to put up with cables draped down the front of your dash. And you'll have real versatility too — plug your iPod into one and use the other for a USB storage device. There's almost no limit to the amount of music you can have on tap. And this Pioneer's 1-amp USB port will charge your devices fast, so you'll be ready to go when you get out of the car.

Pioneer for great sound
The DEH-P9400BH's built-in amp delivers plenty of power for strong sound. You'll also find an impressive collection of soundshaping controls, including a 5-band equalizer that lets you adjust the sound to your car's interior. Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever reverses the compression process to give you more high-frequency sparkle and musical detail from your digital audio files. And when you connect digital music sources like your iPod® to one of the USB inputs, you'll bypass the player's internal digital-to-analog converter and use the higher-quality DAC in the receiver. You songs will sound clearer and more realistic.

Choose colors to match your car and your taste
The fold-down face of the receiver offers plenty of room for displaying song info, and the bright dot-matrix display reads easily in a variety of lighting conditions. You can adjust the display and control colors of this receiver separately, so there are thousands of possible combinations on tap.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

iPhone® 5 Note: You'll need to update this Pioneer receiver to enable Bluetooth control and metadata display for the iPhone 5 or other Apple iOS6 devices. This update requires a laptop with Bluetooth running Windows 7.

      HD Radio

HD Radio: The Pioneer DEH-P9400BH's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-like sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. Best of all, HD Radio is 100% subscription free. The unit's tuner also supports analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to HDRadio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 3 multicast programs (HD1 to HD3, and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible analog or HD AM/FM stations.

iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from a HD Radio or RDS FM broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store.

Supertuner IIID: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

Reception Blending: If a digital broadcast reception condition gets poor, this unit automatically switches to the analog broadcast of the same frequency level. If this function is set to "On", the tuner switches between digital broadcast and analog broadcast automatically. If this function is 'Off', reception will be conducted within an analog broadcast.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest analog or HD stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

XM Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect and control Pioneer's GEX-P920XM satellite tuner (130P920XM, sold separately).

Note: A subscription to XM, plus the proper antenna is required in order to receive satellite radio programming.

      Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The DEH-P9400BH is equipped with built-in Bluetooth ver. 3.0 (powered by Parrot) allowing to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. Bluetooth Technology is a short-range wireless radio connectivity technology that was developed as a cable replacement for mobile phones and other electronic devices. Bluetooth operates in 2.4 GHz frequency range and transmits voice and data at speeds up to 1 megabit per second.

Bluetooth Profiles: In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

      • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
      • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

Phone Pairing: Up to 5 Bluetooth-compatible devices can be registered to this head unit. Only one device can be used at a time.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Pioneer DEH-P9400BH.

Hands-Free Communication: The DEH-P9400BH supports wireless hands-free communication (HFP/HSP/OPP/PBAB) for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The head unit will display the caller's information and an audible ring tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker during an incoming call. You can manually answer an incoming call or have the unit automatically answer the call. The DEH-P9400BH allows you to carry on a phone conversation from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone using the head unit's external microphone and your car audio speakers. During a conversation you can adjust the volume, as well as switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode. Using the DEH-P9400BH, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:

      • Phone Book: The phone book in your Bluetooth enabled cellular phone will be transferred automatically when the phone is paired to this unit. After finding the number you want to call in the phone book from the head unit, you can select the entry and make the call. If a lot of numbers are registered in the phone book, you can search for a phone number by the contact person's name alphabetically (A-Z).
      • Call Log: The 80 most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory. You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.

External Microphone: During your wireless phone call, you can talk into the head unit's included external microphone, and listen to the other party through the vehicle's speaker system. The external microphone provides better performance in noisy environments than the integrated microphone found on the front-panel of many aftermarket or factory radios. The microphone features a 13' cord that plugs into the back of the radio, and comes with an adjustable visor-mount clip. The microphone measures 0.475" (diameter) x 1.445" (depth).

Note: The unit is not equipped with an integrated microphone. The external microphone must be installed for Bluetooth hands-free communication.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Pioneer DEH-P9400BH also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The DEH-P9400BH will be able to control basic playback features; such as Play, Pause, Stop, Previous track, and Next track. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Note: The Pioneer head unit requires an optional Bluetooth firmware update (HW05-SW01.27.20) to enable Bluetooth AVRCP control and metadata display for the iPhone 5 or other Apple iOS6 device. If you do not own an iPhone 5 or iOS6 device, there is no need to install this update.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3 and WMA files recorded on, CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. File/Track Name List: The Name List feature displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a loaded CD or connected USB device, so you can easily access your music. The Name List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc.

Repeat & Random: The Pioneer DEH-P9400BH offers Repeat (disc/track/folder) and Random (disc/folder) playback modes.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Auto Off Eject: When you eject a disc, the unit will automatically power off (unless you switch sources before ejecting the disc).

Installation Angle: Optimum CD playback performance is obtained when the unit is installed at an angle of less than 60-degrees.

      USB/iPod/Aux Connection

Dual USB Ports: Dual rear USB (type-A) ports allow connection of two compatible USB memory devices. Both rear USB (type-A) ports allow you to connect a USB portable audio player or USB flash memory device that is USB Mass Storage Class compliant. Your USB memory devices must be formatted in FAT 12/16/32. A 5' USB extension cable is provided for better access. Up to 8 directories; 1,500 folders; and 15,0000 files per USB device are recognized by this unit. You can search for MP3, WMA, and AAC music files by category - Artist, Album, Song, or Genre. • WAV Files: 8-bit and 16-bit WAV (LPCM) files with a sampling frequency between 16 to 48 kHz are supported.

Note: USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (1A) and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On. This unit cannot recognize USB devices via a USB hub.

iPod Direct Connection: The Pioneer DEH-P9400BH's rear-panel USB ports can also be used to connect your iPod/iPhone to the head unit, via Pioneer's dock connector-to-USB cable (130CDIU50 / 130CDIU51, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable which comes with your iPod/iPhone. The DEH-P9400BH supports audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of your compatible iPod/iPhone.

Note: If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit.

iPod DAC Bypass: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 94dB. The Pioneer head unit supports audio playback of music, podcasts, audiobooks, and music apps stored on your iPod or iPhone.

To access Pandora you must have an Apple iPhone (iOS.3.0+) with the latest version of the Pandora Radio application from Apple's iTunes App Store. The Pioneer head unit will provide control over the Pandora music service & display Artist, Album, & Song information.

      • Station List: You can select Pandora stations from your Station List by date or alphabetically (A-Z).

      • Skip Songs: You can skip song tracks within a station. You cannot skip back to a previous song. Pandora limits the number of skips allowed.
      • Thumbs Up/Down: You can give songs a thumbs up or thumbs down to help Pandora personalize stations to suit your preferences.
      • Bookmarking: The song or artist currently being played can be bookmarked & stored in your Pandora account.

Note: Access to the Pandora service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet. Pandora is not supported in Canada & only available in the United States.

iPod Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit will not charge the Apple iPad.

Note: If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

MusicSphere: Pioneer's new proprietary MusicSphere technology allows you to enjoy your music in a new way by creating unique mood-based playlists via iTunes for your Apple iOS device. When installed on your Windows PC, the MusicSphere iTunes plug-in software will analyze the entire music library and create specialized playlists based on various musical attributes such as feeling (bright, energetic, gloomy, relaxing calm), rhythm pattern, beats per minute (BPM), year of the song and/or date added to the device. Additionally, through the MusicSphere, you can select preferred parameters of your music to create a "DJ Playlist".

Note: You can download MusicSphere directly to your Windows PC from the Pioneer website.

Auxiliary Input: The DEH-P9400BH is equipped with a front-panel 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable MP3 player. AUX must be turned on in the setup menu in order to be selected as a source.

2nd Auxiliary Input (optional): In addition to the front-panel minijack Aux input (AUX 1), you can connect a second auxiliary component by connecting an IP-Bus/RCA connector (AUX 2). The optional CD-RB10 (130CDRB10, sold separately) lets you connect an additional auxiliary component via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit.

      Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Pioneer in-dash head unit utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-P9400BH is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-P9400BH are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-P9400BH are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
      • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

7-Way Rotary Commander: The Pioneer DEH-P9400BH features a 7-Way Rotary Commander for easy control. You can scroll through your music and audio settings with greater ease using the 3-way rotary commander.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. Hear the detail, warmth, and clarity, the way the artist intended it, from all of your highly compressed MP3 and WMA files stored on your USB device, iPod/iPhone, and portable media players. By restoring data (especially higher frequencies) that tends to get lost in the digital compression process, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever technology enhances audio reproduction nearly all the way up to 20 kHz frequencies

Preset EQ: The Pioneer DEH-P9400BH is equipped with seven EQ presets. You can choose from Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2.

Graphic EQ: The DEH-P9400BH's two Custom EQ modes (1 & 2) let you adjust the head unit's 5-band graphic EQ (100Hz, 315Hz, 1.25kHz, 3.15kHz, & 8kHz). You can adjust each band between +6 to -6.

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6 (Gain: 0dB to +12dB).

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

Three Pair of 4.0-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer DEH-P9400BH features three pair of 4.0-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Crossovers: The DEH-P9400BH employs high pass and low pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speakers.

      • High Pass: The head unit's 12dB/octave high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs.
      • Low Pass: The subwoofer preamp output features an18dB/octave low pass filter so only frequencies lower than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) are output to your connected subwoofer.

Subwoofer Controls: The Pioneer DEH-P9400BH lets you adjust the subwoofer preamp output's phase (normal/reverse) and volume (+6 to -24).

Rear Channel Speaker Output: You can choose to use the rear channel output (speaker and preout) for full-range speaker or subwoofer. If you select "subwoofer", you can connect a 4-ohm subwoofer directly to each rear speaker lead, or a 2-ohm subwoofer to one of the rear speaker leads, without using an external amplifier.

      Display Features

Detachable Fold-Down Face: The Pioneer DEH-P9400BH in-dash CD receiver features a manual fold-down faceplate with detachable face security. The manual fold-down face helps to prevent dust from gathering on the unit's CD mechanism. If the front panel is not detached from the head unit within five seconds of turning off the ignition, a warning tone will sound. The warning tone can be turned off in the menu, if desired. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

Large Full-Dot LCD: The Pioneer DEH-P9400BH features a 3-line full-dot LCD which makes it easier to see what is playing in most lighting conditions. You can easily view file/folder lists from your MP3, WMA, AAC, and CD Text-encoded discs, HD Radio presets, or data from your connected iPod/iPhone. The contrast of the display can be set between 0 and 15.

Color Customization: Color Customization lets the user match their receiver illumination to their vehicle's interior lighting. Over 210,000 colors are available to match the illumination of almost any car. The button illumination and display illumination colors can be customized separately for an endless number of color combinations. You can select from 27 preset colors (White to Rose), customize an illumination color (by adjusting Red, Blue, and Green brightness levels), or scan through various color settings (All/Warm/Ambient/Calm/Custom).

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Multi-Language Display: For your convenience, this unit is equipped with a multiple language display. You can select the language which is best suited to your first language - English, French, or Spanish.

Entertainment Displays: You can enjoy entertainment displays while listening to each sound source. You can choose from the following: Background Visual, Genre, Background Picture (1/2/3/4), Simple Display, Movie Screen, or Calendar.

Calendar/Clock Display: The Pioneer DEH-P9400BH provides time, date, month, and year display. You can choose to have the head unit display the calendar and clock even when the unit is powered off (your vehicle must be running or in the accessory position).

Engine Time Alert: This setting allows you to measure the length of time that elapses from when the head unit is turned on and display the amount of elapsed time per set period (15 min., 30 min., or Off). There will also be an audible alarm. This function is handy if you are listening to the radio with the vehicle' ignition is in the accessory position, and the engine off.

Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. You can turn the dimmer on or off. The automatic dimmer function only works when the orange/white illumination wire in the wiring harness is connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit.

      Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The DEH-P9400BH comes with an IR wireless remote control. The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. The mute button allows you to quickly lower the volume by about 90% (function that cannot be performed from the front panel). In addition, the remote provides answer/end phone controls for Bluetooth.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

I have had several Pioneer AM/FM CD players in my cars and trucks without any problems. The DEH-P9400BH is a definite improvement in my car audio systems. The stereo has more features then I ever had before. You have got to buy this stereo to appreciate it.
      Pros:
It has the greatest number of features for the price. I bought it from Crutchfields because they include everthing for a quick installation.
      Cons:
You will have to learn how to operate the 9400 to really enjoy it but once you do it is fantastic. Some phones do not tranfer phone numbers into the stereo. I have a Samsung 404 Tracfone and it is hit or miss with the phone numbers it transfers

What can i say Built In Bluetooth and its not like others receivers that say Bluetooth ready and you still have to buy Bluetooth device. This unit out of the box is Bluetooth ready no BS. Built in HD Radio i have never been interested in HD Radio cause i never knew what it was but OMG Amazing Quality. 2 Usb ports in the back, 1 aux in the front. I am not a fan of front Usb looks hideous so this is perfect. The quality of the sound of Pioneer cannot be beating hand s down. The unit is not cluttered with buttons all over it you just have to get used to the unit and you will be fine. I use it strictly with a Classic iPod in my glove compartment, i can honestly tell you i probably will never use the cd player. This unit is perfect for me i got it on Sale so even better.
      Pros:
Bluetooth, HD Radio, 2 USB ports.
      Cons:
      NONE!

Excellent Radio -- I upgraded my stock AM/FM radio in my 2008 F-150 and could not be happier. Probably did not need all the bells and whistles that are on this radio, but Bluetooth is very handy, especially in those hand-free states that I am sure VA will be soon.

After much research, this is the winner

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, I read hundreds of reviews for dozens of units while I was shopping, both on Crutchfield and on Amazon. Those that rate this unit poorly either got a bad unit or were being too picky. I've had mine in my Xterra @ 6 weeks now, and would purchase it again.

I'll start by listing the must-have features. In order, I wanted bluetooth built-in, the USB port(s) in back, control of Pandora from the unit, and a classy design (not a Vegas billboard). The presence of a 2nd USB and built-in HD are added bonuses. With Pandora, I couldn't care less about Sat. radio.

The BT works great and is easy to set up. Call quality on my end couldn't be better, and the folks I talk to report the sound is good on their end as well. I have an iPhone 5, and pairing was a snap. The BT audio works with every app on my phone (Audible, Amazon cloud player, YouTube, Netflix, etc.). I just wish I could control the audio from the unit. Not a big deal though.

I have one USB coming out discretely just beneath the radio, and one in the glovebox in case my wife/daughter need to charge their phones. With my iPhone plugged in, I can control audio from any app and display track info. This includes searching, pausing, skipping, etc. Tracks on Pandora can be thumbed up or down as well.

The HD sounds great, and was a better feature than I would have even thought. One of my favorite stations in Atlanta went off the air, but resurfaced as HD2 for a different station.
      Pros:
Does EVERYTHING, and most things well. Controls are mostly intuitive, and easy to learn.
      Cons:
No native control on the unit when listening to BT audio (only a minor drawback). The manual is utterly useless.

Radio prices sure have come down and this is worth every penny and then some. My first HD Radio with bluetooth, functions and they all work great. Everytime I get into my car the bluetooth connects to my phone right away and if I was using Slacker radio it will start to play right away if I have it set to bluetooth mode. the phone button makes it easy to get to your phonebook and make a call. My car has a load exhaust but does not interfere with the sound quality. I love this radio and if I need another for any reason I am going right for this one.
      Pros:
easy to use, alot of functions and endless color choices
      Cons:
none that I can figure out

Great features - Not so good UI

Written By TonyF, Cotati, CA on Thursday, March 07, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I looked around for a while and bought this unit because of the great features that it had. I had seen a few reviews mention that it was difficult to use but I figured it can't be too bad. Well, for the most part it's not too bad but there are a few glaring problems that really make me wonder if they tried using this unit before they shipped it. It is very easy to change the colors on the the display and the controls. There is also a dedicated button for changing from a clock to a timer. Both interesting features. How about pausing the music you're listening to? There's no button for that. You have two choices: dig about 3 levels deep in the menus to get to the pause function or press the pause button on the remote control. Neither is a workable option when you're driving.

One great thing about this unit is the 2 USB ports I have one to hook up my phone and the other has a hard drive with about 50GB of music loaded on it. Nice to have that available. The have a nice "smart" mode which indexes the music on the hard drive and makes searching much faster. The problem is that when you choose an album it plays the songs back in alphabetical order, not the album order. Maybe not a problem on most albums but a real drag on albums like Abby Road or Dark Side of the Moon.
      Pros:
Great sound and great features 2 USB ports in the rear of the unit
      Cons:
Terrible user interface. Hard to get to needed functions. Easy to get to rather useless functions.

Sound quality is good. HD radio is very good. But not that easy to operate. Little compicated the controls. I bought this stereo because of 1. Bluetooth 2. HD radio 3. Colorful screen. HD radio is very good, colors are very good too but bluetooth is not that good. Microphone has lot of noise. Other person can hear lot of noise. I returned this unit and kept Alpine. Alpine's Bluetooth quality is unbeatble. I love Alpine over Pioneer only for this reason because you spend that much of money but Pioneer is unable to take care of just silly micriphone to make it noisecancelling.
      Pros:
Sound quality, HD radio, multicolor screen and nice appearance
      Cons:
      Bluetooth microphone quality

Install was pretty simple, even though this was the first I had ever done. With the firmware update, It works well playing songs from my iPhone 4s. Sound quality for calls is good, though some complain of a lot of background noice from me. Control could be a little better, a little more intuitive, but gets a lot easier with use. Sound quality was a major upgrade from my factory radio, even with the stock speakers
      Pros:
      Ease of install, sound quality
      Cons:
menu structure, controls need to be a bit more intuitive

      Feature Filled Unit

Written By Steve M, Vancouver,WA on Thursday, February 07, 2013
      Installed in a 2001 Volvo S40
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit for my 2001 Volvo s40, which required an additional "pocket" below the unit to fill the gap. I am pleased with the fit, and it looks like it belongs there with no obvious gaps or misfit joints. I decided on this model because it offered HD radio, Bluetooth, Pandora, and audio streaming, with the option for XM. Compared to other contestants, this unit gives you a great deal of the newest options for a great price. The ease of use requires a learning process, but hey, that's the case with most pieces of complicated equipment, once I learned the process, it was easy to operate. Installation was very easy made possible by the included wire harness adaptors, and instructions. Tweaking the sound took me quit a while to test all the different optional shaping tools, but I finally settled on a pretty decent sound for both radio, and mp3's. I absolutely love the song info on the radio that scrolls the artist, and tune name so I always know who is singing and what the song is. Personally, I prefer a double din size receiver because you get more real-estate to present the info, but this does a pretty good job, although it's kinda hard to see the small ikons.
      Pros:
Great price, especially the scratch and dent unit I purchase....it looked very clean and was packaged perfect with everything included. Super unit packed with all the up-to-date features.
      Cons:
There's a lot going on for a small display, so until you become familiar with what to look for at a glance it's a bit crowded.

Written By Lost in WV, Morgantown, WV on Saturday, January 19, 2013

Installed this in my Audi TT with Bose tonight. No issues on install.

USB is not compatible with Android. I plugged my Note 2 into USB. I get "device not compatible". After a little research I find that Android 4.0+ does not support USB mass storage or USB on the go. Bluetooth works great but my setup does not allow for my tablet to use bluetooth. I can fall back on the Aux input but sound quality is noticeably lower.

I plugged my Iphone 4 into USB and it was a great experience. To bad my Iphone 4 is only a low storage Ipod now.
      Pros:
Sound Quality, Hands free calling is quality
      Cons:
USB is not compatible with Android 4.0+

      Pioneer DEH-P9400BH

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off this is a great deck (Pioneer DEH-P9400BH). Has everything you need without breaking the bank. As always ordering/shipping was straight forward with Crutchfield. All attaching hardware was included free of charge and made installation into my 05' Dodge Ram easy as can be. Found the deck cheaper on other sites however when you factor in the included hardware the price came out equal. Lastly you get lifetime support if you run into issues along the way. Would buy this product again using Crutchfield.
      Pros:
Pioneer quality. Ease of install. Bluetooth with all the needed hardware. 2 USB attachments out the rear (for a clean look). Paired to my Droid 2 with ease.
      Cons:
Not very easy to access radio stations till you dig into the settings.

      Awesome upgrade

Instaled this unit in a 2001 F-350 to get rid of the factory radio. Paired it with 4 Rockford Fosgate Prime R1682 speakers and couldnt be happier. However the manual sucks. Not very detailed and leaves a little to be desired. Sounds great, Sirius tuner plugged right in and Im on my way. Looks great with mounting hardware that was provided.
      Pros:
BT, Satellite ready, hd radio. All sound great!
      Cons:
      Manual

      Maddening

Written By Rich, California on Thursday, December 27, 2012

This is the worst, most aggravating car receiver I've ever used. I've been a Pioneer fan for 10+ years, not anymore. The software only works when it wants to, for example if I plug my iPhone in and try to play iPod music it'll assume I want to play Pandora and skip to the Pandora screen. I'll then have to unplug, start playing music and plug back in. If I'm playing Pandora and I lose service, I can't just change the source, I have to unplug, change the source to iPod, start playing iPod and plug back in. Even then it'll sometimes still want to jump to Pandora and I'll have to unplug and try again. Not exactly safe on mountain roads where you usually lose cell service. Also, if you somehow succeed in getting the iPod music to actually play, it'll always start with the first song alphabetically on the iPod- no matter what artist or playlist you were playing on your headphones before you got in your car. Bluetooth and Aux jack work well, no complaints there. The screen is nice but the only way to see a clock you can clearly read is to sacrifice being able to see the song and artist info- defeating the purpose of a big screen. Radio presets are a hassle to program and annoying to sort through, radio preset buttons would be nice. So would a pause or a mute button.

There's more but all that matters is I would NOT recommend this terrible radio and a big thanks to Crutchfield for taking it back. I'm much happier with my Alpine
      Pros:
Big screen with many colors to choose from Visual EQ control and lots of adjustability Crutchfield's return policy
      Cons:
Doesn't like to play ipod music and doesn't remember where you left off Doesn't switch between iPod and Pandora Teeny clock Poor screen layout-lots of wasted space Radio presets are difficult No mute or pause buttons

      Pioneer radio

I consider. This radio an excellent entry type radio Easy to install
      Pros:
Great sound. iPhone manageable. Can adjust the color to match your dash colors. Sat ready. Compact foot print
      Cons:
Lousy manual hard to read not detailed enough ( needs to be on DVD) needs a battery back up to save settings during car battery maintenance.

jeep jk 2dr perfect infinity replacement

Written By mom, Chattanooga, tn on Wednesday, December 19, 2012

This unit is perfect for someone looking to replace the infinity sound system and amp in a jk. The right rear output can be changed to power a sub, it has built in crossover and high pass filter for the speaker outs.
      Pros:
Wiring Flexibility. Illumination color can be changed. Can hide aux inputs. High pass filter, low pass filter, graphic eq. Dimmer works, with chrysler canbus adapter.
      Cons:
Face is barely visible in daylight. Can not hide USB inputs or tuner input.

      Great Unit!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a really great stereo! It was my first aftermarket head-unit and I am very pleased with it. The sound is amazing and the various audio options and equalizer really let me get a sound I liked. Bluetooth is clear and solid for both music and calls. Radio works perfectly however the RDS seems kind of slow compared to some of my friends'. The display can be hard to see in direct sunlight, but this seems to be a problem with many aftermarket units. However at certain angles it is actually easier to see, no idea why but I go with it. The main problem I had was that my phone did not seem to like being connected to it. I have a Droid 3 and it would lock in USB mode even after I unplugged it and set it for "charge only." This means that my music files on my SD card could not be accessed for either link play or BT, but anything stored on my phones internal storage could. It could be either my phone or a compatibility issue, I never found out but now I just use a dedicated USB drive I leave in the car for my music and it works fine. The last thing I have to say is the buttons and dial seem a little flimsy but don't show any signs of breaking or loosening after a few months. I am very pleased with my purchase and would recommend this!
      Pros:
      Sound Quality Features
      Cons:
Compatibility issue (maybe) Display can be lost in the sunlight

      Disappointing

Written By Old Pioneer Fan, El Paso, TX on Wednesday, November 14, 2012

After owning a Pioneer DEH-P9400BH for six months and not being happy the store agreed to replace it with another unit of my choice. The BT hands free connection was very choppy and usually dropped the call after a couple of minutes, the installers tried troubleshooting the BT several times by changing mic position, revising Android version and upgrades, etc. but nothing worked. Also the USB file system drops you back to the root every time when browsing back making you browse folder after folder after folder every time after finishing one album and looking for something else to listen from the same genre/artist/etc, this is frustrating especially while driving. So I replaced it with a JVC Arsenal KD-A735BT and it made all the difference in the world, better sound, solid BT performance, smart USB file browsing, plus Pandora connectivity from your phone, I'm in love with JVC, they used to be in the dumps but after acquiring Kenwood got their act together, and it was less expensive so I got money back for a better unit. I wrote Pinoeer about my problems with this unit and they basically told me "too bad" that's how the unit works, no firmware upgrade, and no tips or instructions on how to make it work better. So after being a loyal fan of Pioneer I will now phase out all my Pioneer products in time. **I wrote a similar review for the JVC Arsenal KD-A735BT**
      Pros:
      Sound - Cool Display
      Cons:
Bluetooth performance - USB file browsing
