AudioQuest

Our take on the AudioQuest Forest

by Steve Kindig

Designed by — and for — music lovers
AudioQuest paid us a visit recently and let us check out their new line of USB cables. These cables definitely have a high-quality look and feel, but we wondered how noticeable any sonic improvements would be. The proof was in the listening. In a side-by-side comparison against a free-in-the-box USB cable, the AQ cable delivered greater bass extension, along with more bass and mid-bass detail. The soundstage opened up and vocals sounded more natural.

A high-quality USB cable is a great way to connect your desktop or laptop computer to a high-end audio digital-to-analog converter. For USB audio, as with all digital audio signals, it's critical to maintain accurate timing. This cable can reduce the timing errors or "jitter" that often makes digital music sound less clear and rich and three-dimensional.

Paying attention to every detail
The Forest is AQ's lowest-priced USB cable, but it's made to AudioQuest's exacting standards. It's carefully engineered, made with top-notch materials, and tested through hours of listening. Triple shielding reduces external electronic noise and interference, while gold-plated connectors ensure solid, corrosion-free contact.

If you connect a Forest cable to your printer, will you see crisper text? Probably not. But if you enjoy listening to digital music files on a high-quality audio system, you'll be surprised at the difference AQ's USB cables can make.

Great Quality and Reliable Performance

Written By Larry, Atlanta, GA on Friday, February 08, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used this cable to connect Musical Fidelity V-DAC II (24/96 through USB) to MacBook Pro. The cable has good fit and seems to be of a good quality. V-DAC II performs exceptionally well with this cable.

Making sure that performance of digital audio stream over USB is reliable and happens without any losses is critical for achieving excellent performance of a connected DAC so that was my motivation and reasoning behind installing this cable.

For the record, my upgrade included not only this AudioQuest USB cable but also AudioQuest RCA cable and Musical Fidelity V-PSU II so the effect was cumulative and probably mostly due to upgraded AudioQuest RCA cable and V-PSU II.

After installing AudioQuest RCA/USB cables and V-PSU II I turned on my system and tried to listen to Pink Floyd "Wish You Were Here" through Beyerdynamics DT990/600 Ohm headphones.

In short, I was shocked to the point I did not recognize my system! Sound became so sharp, detailed, and crystal clear with very strong and accurate bass that I felt like I was listening to completely different DAC and headphone amplifier! Few times I heard sound passages, loud and clear, that I never heard before - on recording that I listened to like 1000+ times.

Great product!
Pros:
Good quality and fit. Excellent performance of connected Musical Fidelity V-DAC II.
Cons:
None

High-quality USB cables count!

Written By Jud the Prof, Pasadena, CA on Saturday, February 11, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

More and more hi-def audio comes via the USB port on one's PC (and less and less via S/PDIF coax links). USB ports on WinXP/Vista/7 computers are restricted to 96k samples @ 24-bits tops, but can be pushed by the drivers in hi-end DACs to 192k/32. At high sample rates and high bitdepths ordinary USB cables designed to link peripherals such as printers and cameras to one's computer *fail* in audio applications, and fail too at the Philips Redbook CD standard of a mere 44.1k at 16 bits. Audioquest's Forest USB cable is the cheapest next step up, and **audible** even on a modest desktop audio system, e.g., mine which consists of a PC laptop running JRiver Media Center, a Music Streamer II DAC, and a sub-satellite Cambridge Soundworks speaker system. My DAC gets its power from the PC, so the Audioquest cable helps there as well providing a better pathway for the 5 volts DC that runs my outboard "sound card." You should buy this cable.
Pros:
Great price. Nice appearance. Good performance.
Cons:
Makes you wish you could afford the Audioquest Diamond USB Cable!
