Featuring 10 independently adjustable frequency bands, AudioSource's EQ 200 gives you super-precise sonic control with your home stereo system. Far more sophisticated and powerful than your receiver's bass and treble controls, this graphic equalizer lets you fine-tune audio signals to suit your personal musical taste. This handy EQ also features a 10-band multicolor spectrum analyzer display. It doesn't just look cool — seeing the music's frequency content can also help you make the right sound adjustments.

The EQ 200 is compatible with receivers that have a tape monitor loop (or pre-out/main-in loop), or with separate preamp/amplifier components. An array of input and output jacks lets you connect up to 2 recording decks (tape, CD, MD, etc.), for making custom-equalized dubs — it's especially helpful for cleaning up the sound when you dub from older recordings.

Features

Features Overview: This graphic equalizer is a tool to obtain detailed control over the sound of your speakers, far more than standard tone controls. You can enhance older recordings and alter instrumental and vocal balance to suit your individual tastes. This unit has 20 bands of frequency adjustments (10 for each channel) ranging from 30Hz-16kHz and a level control for both left and right channels. Comparison between "equalized" and "unequalized" sounds can be made with the EQ/Bypass button.

Controls

EQ Sliders: There are 10 sliders per channel, each giving 12dB of boost or cut. Each slider is positioned one octave apart from another to correspond with the entire range of human hearing. A light illuminates in red on each slider unless the unit is in "Bypass" mode. The 10 sliders represent the following frequencies: 30Hz, 60Hz, 120Hz, 250Hz, 500Hz, 1kHz, 2kHz, 4kHz, 8kHz and 16kHz.

Power: Activates power to the equalizer. The LED glows green when power is on and red when the unit is off.

Tape 1-2/Tape 2-1: When this button is engaged, it allows you to make a tape copy or dub between two cassette decks. The "In" position dubs from Tape 1 to Tape 2 and the LED illuminates in green. The "Out" position allows dubbing from Tape 2 to Tape 1 and the LED will illuminate in red. Note: When the "Line/Tape" switch is out (the tape position), the "Tape 1-2/Tape 2-1" switch allows you to select which tape deck you want to listen to.

Audio/Video: This button selects between the two input audio sources. When the button is pressed in, the LED illuminates in green and the Audio input is selected. When the button is in the out position, the LED illuminates in red and the Video input source is selected. Note: There are no video connections on this unit. The inputs/outputs are for audio only.

EQ/Bypass: Comparisons between "Equalized and Unequalized" sounds can be made with this button. The LED illuminates in green when pressed in and the sound can be heard with your chosen equalization curve. When the button is out, the equalization curve is disengaged and the LED illuminates in red. Note: When bypassing the equalization curve, the LEDs on the sliders do not illuminate.

EQ Rec: Allows you to make a tape copy with the equalization curve that you have set. The LED illuminates in green when pressed.

Line/Tape: When pressed in, the "Line Input" is chosen and the LED illuminates in green. When the button is out, the "Tape Input" is selected and the LED illuminates in red.

Level Controls: This button controls the level, or volume of each channel.

Spectrum Analyzer Display: The spectrum analyzer provides a visual display of the relative signal levels in each of the EQ sliders. There are ten columns of LEDs that correspond to the 10 EQ sliders.

Unswitched Outlet: There is an unswitched outlet (200 watts max) on the back right of the unit.

I have paired the Audio Sourse Equalizer with a Marantz PM8300 Power Amplifier and a Marantz CC4001 5 CD carousel player and two 35 year old JBL Recording Studio Control Room Monitor speakers. I use the equalizer to balance the sound to my room acoustics and my personal taste. I does a fine job. It is the best equalizer Crutchfield had to offer. Equalizers are not a real hot item with all the home theater systems being put in now. I only gave this unit four stars because I have nothing else with which to compare it and know if it deserves five stars. I own a Bose Lifestyle V20 home theater system which has an auttomated system of balancing itself to your room acoustics which does a good job. With the AudioSource I have the ability to balance the sound to my personal preferences verses the predetermined Bose fixed standard. I like having the control instead of the equipment having control.

Got mine about a week ago. It's a very nice looking product, cool lights too. Sound is great -- exactly what I needed. No problems so far with the buttons, but I'll keep my fingers crossed. With no other options in this price range, what else can I do?

Please save yourself the headaches by not purchasing this equalizer. The sound is up and down (high then low - not stable) while listening to this equalizer. The best thing about this product is the look at night (darkness); the red lights look good in the dark.

Defects

The EQ 200 has a problem with the stereo channels dropping out. Other reviewers have pointed out his same problem as well. I even found a review elsewhere dating this problem all the way back to 2001. The problem seems to be either shorting or loose contacts in the switches; when mine is acting up, I can jiggle the switches and the sound will cut in and out of one or the other channels. I read the other reviews about this problem before purchasing mine, but decided to go ahead and take a chance, since there aren't many EQs left on the market to choose from these days. Oh, well. When 3 out of 4 reviews complain about the same problem, those really are bad odds. It is too bad this unit has this issue, because some of us "old school" types still want an EQ, and this was the best hope. There are some other oversights on this model as well. It does not allow you to monitor your tape deck's output while recording, a feature that should be standard on an EQ. Also there is no sensitivity adjustment for the spectrum analyzer display; when playing a high-level output source like a CD player, the display is just peaked out. They give you input level controls which can be used to turn down the display level, but that also turns down the volume of the music. Despite these other shortcomings, the unit would have still been acceptable, had it not been for the switch problems. I have no use for a component that causes the sound to drop out in the middle of my favorite song.

I was looking to replace my Audio Source Equilizer that I purchased years ago. The whole reason I want to replace it is because of the "short" in the monitor section that causes static and flare ups in and out. I was astounded to find that AS denies that there is a problem. Apparently, this is an ongoing problem with their product. I agree with the reader,when it is working right the sound is as alive as can be.But why would I buy a product that may have the same problem I already have.Audio Source needs to look closer at its customer's problems.

This equalizer is very good for cleaning up the sound of your CDs, or helping to correct your audio depending on your room. However, the one drawback is that the buttons on the equalizer are prone to shorting out, and causing your channels to cut out or carry static. After 3 units being replaced by the manufacturer(who said there was nothing wrong with them) I finally pinpointed the issue with the line in button. I bypassed this by simply pluging my audio cables into the tape inputs instead, thereby negating the need to press the line in button. Though it's a shame that a button defect causes this problem, the good news is that simply working around the issue allowed the unit to still be useful. The quality and sound that is produced from this unit is second to none, and can be used with Audiophile amplifers. It is excellent for music listening, so if you're a fan of Stereo music, definitely pick up this equalizer and try it out, just keep an eye on those buttons.
