AudioControl

Our take on the AudioControl DQXS

by Charlie Pastorfield

Get maximum performance from your system

AudioControl designed the DQXS for one reason — to make your car audio system sound better. This 6-channel equalizer features 130 bands of adjustment, along with two parametric EQs per channel and an 8-channel crossover, for some serious sonic fine tuning. Plus, you can store your favorite system settings in eight different memory locations that won't go down when you lose power.

System diagram

Easy to set up, easy to use

The DQXS features 6-channel inputs and 8-channel outputs, fitting between your receiver and your amplifiers in the signal chain. Once connected, the DQXS makes it easy — turn up the input gain knobs until the "Maximized" indicator flickers, adjust the output knobs until you reach the desired output, and you're all set. You can adjust the output level up to 7.5 volts, so you can maximize the performance of any amplifier.

Kill those sonic peaks and valleys

Car interiors present a unique set of problems caused by poorly-placed speakers, reflective surfaces, and absorbent materials. The DQXS allows you to tweak the sound in your vehicle to your ear's content. You'll get precise, digital control with thirty graphic EQ filters for the front channels, nineteen EQ filters for the rear, and sixteen for the subwoofer. Six programmable parametric equalizers allows you to zero in on trouble spots on each channel, great for eliminating tweeter blare or subwoofer boom.

8-channel crossover offers flexibility

Optional controller

The built-in crossover allows you to use the DQXS in a variety of car audio systems, from a traditional front/rear/sub setup to a 3-way system with subs, midbass or midrange speakers, and tweeters. You can also program the subsonic filter to remove bass below the range of human hearing that can hamper your system's power and performance. Use AudioControl's optional DDC dash-mount digital controller to adjust the DQXS from your driver's seat.

Features

Crossover: Each of the 4 sets of line outputs has its own crossover. The slope of the crossovers is 24 dB/octave and the available crossover point options vary based on how the input mode is set:

  • 2-Channel: the front input feeds the front high-pass, front low-pass, and subwoofer outputs; the crossover point for each is independently adjustable as follows:
    • Front High-pass: from 140 Hz to 8 kHz
    • Front Low-pass: from 15 Hz to 90 Hz
    • Subwoofer Low-pass: from 28 Hz to 1 kHz
  • 4-Channel: the front input feeds the front high-pass, front low-pass, and subwoofer outputs, the rear input feeds the rear high-pass output; the crossover point for each is independently adjustable as follows:
    • Front High-pass: from 140 Hz to 8 kHz
    • Front Low-pass: from 15 Hz to 90 Hz
    • Rear High-pass: from 15 Hz to 8 kHz
    • Subwoofer Low-pass: from 28 Hz to 1 kHz
  • 6-Channel: the front input feeds the front high-pass and front low-pass outputs, the rear input feeds the rear high-pass output, and the subwoofer input feeds the subwoofer outputs; the crossover point for each is independently adjustable as follows:
    • Front High-pass: from 140 Hz to 8 kHz
    • Front Low-pass: from 15 Hz to 90 Hz
    • Rear High-pass: from 15 Hz to 8 kHz
    • Subwoofer Low-pass: from 28 Hz to 1 kHz

Subsonic Filter: The subsonic filter crossover point is adjustable; there are 24 frequency options from 15 Hz to 56 Hz. The crossover slope is 24 dB/octave.

Equalizer: Each set of outputs (front high/front low, rear, and subwoofer) has its own graphic equalizer. In each band, both channels (left and right) can be adjusted simultaneously or individually. Each line output also has two programmable parametric EQ bands with adjustable width (1/12, 1/6, 1/3, 1/2, 1, 2, or 3 octave). The adjustment range is +/-12 dB in 1 dB increments.

  • Front: The front graphic EQ has 30 bands from 25 Hz to 20 kHz in 1/3 octave steps. There are 59 bands from 25 Hz to 20 kHz in 1/6 octave steps for the two parametric EQ bands. (When using both the front high-pass and front low-pass outputs, which is affected by a given EQ band depends on the crossover point selected)
  • Rear: The rear graphic EQ has 19 bands from 31.5 Hz to 16 kHz in 1/2 octave steps. There are 59 bands from 25 Hz to 20 kHz in 1/6 octave steps for the two parametric EQ bands.
  • Subwoofer: The subwoofer graphic EQ has 16 bands from 25 Hz to 800 Hz in 1/3 octave steps. There are 33 bands from 25 Hz to 1 kHz in 1/6 octave steps for the two parametric EQ bands.

User Memory: There are eight memory presets to save equalizer curves; the memory is non-volatile, so it isn't lost if the battery is disconnected or runs dead.

Balanced Input: Using the balanced differential input circuit on the auxiliary input cancels noise picked up in the transmission line between the DQXS and the source unit. The input can be set to balanced or unbalanced if needed.

Input Gain: The input gains for the 3 pair of line inputs are set independently. You can boost or cut the signal to match the source output to the DQXS input.

Output Level: The adjustable output levels allow you to increase the head unit's line voltage to the top of your amp's input range; up to 7.5 volts RMS. The output level is adjusted independently for each of the 4 pair of line outputs.

DDC Input: A wired Digital Dash Control (item number 161DDC) can be added to the DQXS, giving you remote control of all the menu functions.

Ground Isolation: The power supply ground is switchable, in case of ground loop noise. The factory position is fully isolated (typically the best choice), but can be changed to Ground or 200Ω.

Terminal Block: The power/ground/remote terminal is removable; the wiring is attached to the terminal block, then the block is plugged into the DQXS. The terminal block will accommodate wire up to 12 gauge.

Specifications:

  • Maximum Input Voltage: 7.5 volts RMS
  • Maximum Output Voltage: 7.5 volts RMS
  • Frequency response: 10Hz-22kHz
  • THD: 0.01%
  • S/N Ratio: 105 dB
  • Balanced Input Noise Rejection: 60 dB
  • Input Impedance: 20 kΩ

How many crossover points?

Written By hifonix, Greenville, NC on Tuesday, July 17, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This thing is amazing. You can sculpt your sound any way you want it. Way over my head as far as setup went. I would say have a PRO install and tune for you. Well worth every penny once configured correctly. I listen to alot of metal so a crossover/eq was a must have to keep vocals and solo's inline with each other. I was tired of redoing my stereo trying to get the sound I wanted out of what I had, so sold everything and bought top shelf componets polk speakers, jl audio sub and amps, and this the crown of my system. Hard to put into words what this will do for your system. Well worth the money. The flexibility this offers is unparrelled.
Pros:
Does exactly what is says it will.
Cons:
You may need a PRO shop to tune it for you, but once that is done (correctly) the sound you will have is amazing.
