JBL

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Our take on the JBL Grand Touring Series GTO927

by Ken Nail

JBL's GTO Series speakers will provide the best possible performance where it matters most — in your car.

The special design of the GTO927 6"x9" speakers extracts maximum power from your car stereo or outboard amplifier for increased sound levels. The woofer cone boasts more surface area than similarly-sized speakers, further improving efficiency and increasing bass production. The woofer's design ensures tight, powerful output from rear decks and other mounting areas.

The GTO927 features the My-Ti™ tweeter, which blends mylar and titanium to broadcast smooth, well-controlled high frequencies. The speaker sports integrated high- and low-pass filters and a level control that allows you to tune the tweeter's output to your specific vehicle and listening taste. To improve imaging, you can aim the tweeter for the best possible stereo "sweet spot."

Important Note: These JBL speakers use a low impedance design to pull more power safely from your car stereo or amplifier. This design is compatible with all factory and aftermarket stereos.

Highlights:

  • 6"x9" 2-way speakers (pair)
  • Plus One polypropylene woofer cone with rubber surround
  • My-Ti™ (mylar/titanium) dome tweeter with level control
  • UniPoint™ tweeter pivots for improved imaging

    Features

Plus One+ Woofer Cones: Each speaker uses a cone significantly larger than other speakers of the same size. This is accomplished by using a unique basket design and hi-roll surround. The Plus One+ design offers greater bass output and a significant increase in efficiency.

Woofer Materials: Each woofer is constructed of Injection-Molded Polypropylene. This process of cone molding assures a uniform cone thickness for superior linearity and clarity. It is also lighter weight and more rigid for decreased distortion and improved bass response.

Hi-roll Rubber Surrounds: The hi-roll rubber surrounds allow the woofers a greater range of movement, resulting in longer X-max and more bass output.

1" My-Ti Dome Tweeters (Unipoint Design): The Mylar/titanium composite tweeters are stiff, light, and extremely efficient. They deliver the high-frequency extension of titanium with the damping of a composite diaphragm. The Unipoint design allows each tweeter to rotate 350 degrees, enabling you to direct the tweeter for optimum imaging. Each tweeter has an adjustable output level that can be set to +0 dB (flat) or +3 dB.

Note: The tweeters are not made to turn 360 degrees. If they are turned 360 degrees or more, they will be damaged.

    Great Buy!

Written By 92Caddy, Peoria, IL on Sunday, January 25, 2009

These JBL's are great. I love their huge bass and the tweeter also sounds
great. I have them in a 92 Cadillac Deville Sedan and they really sound
amazing, my only small complaint would be lack of midrange power,
besides that they are performing exceptionally! I've had them 2 months
and have had no problems. The install was kind of tricky but worked out
fine. I have mine wired to a Sony GT-210, the base model, and they sound
good at low to lower high volumes, but are distorted at high volumes, so
I'm going to a new receiver. Overall, great speakers for the money.

    1999 Saab 9-5

Written By Hans, Jacksonville, FL on Saturday, January 03, 2009

Installed these in the rear deck of my 1999 9-5 as3 stereo and they blow the stock subs away. Unfortunately only bass signals are sent from the stock amp, but im sure if the tweeters in these speakers received any signal they would sound even better.

    Great 6x9's

Written By Footballplaya3k, Vancouver, WA on Saturday, November 29, 2008

I put these speakers, JBL GTO 927's, in my '98 Grand Prix GTP on the back deck to replace the stock 6x9's with practically no bass. I LOVE these 6x9's! The way the speakers come stock in my car the tweeters do not get power, which is fine with me. These speakers are all about the bass! I know what bass is too, I had 2 15" ALPINE SWR-1542D subs hooked up to a 1300 watt Sony Explod amp. I'm not saying these things sound like subs, but they're pretty close. They are all and more than I expected from any 6x9

    Surprisingly Good

Written By Tinkertank, Ottawa, On on Monday, September 15, 2008

I picked these over the Infinity 6x9s because they were slightly cheaper. I was going to get Infinity to match the front doors, but now I think I should have gone JBL all around! They are very bright and crisp ( +3db on the tweeters makes them pretty harsh though), with good mids, and boarderline subwoofer grade thump! They are such a huge improvement over the factory Bose speakers that I don't know how I put up with them for so long! They are 2 Ohms, so they are compatible with my Bose amplifiers, I'm very happy! I should have done this years ago!

Crutchfield's MasterSheets made it so easy to disassemple my horribly complex rear deck that I felt like a pro!

Thanks Crutchfield! You have selling car audio down to a science!

    ok for the money

I have these wired to a JVC KWXG700 with no amp...I listen to metal and love Pantera Shadows Fall Metallica etc...I like how they sound with some songs, but with most Pantera stuff they pop alot from the treble of the guitar...i have the bass on head unit all the way down, but still hear the pop every so often, otherwise if I listen to something different they are great

    Sound good, but...

Written By troyce, Charlestown,NH on Friday, June 20, 2008
Installed in a 2008 Nissan Frontier
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Relatively satisfied with the speakers, decent sound but held back by speaker placement in my 08 Frontier KC. Not a fault of JBL, they are located low in the doors and imaging is obviously affected. I had hoped the adjustable tweeters would help, but knew this could only go so far. Decent bass, solid highs, no complaints. My truck has plastic enclousures on the doors, and these speakers do not clear depth-wise without trimming the backs off. Not a big deal, but hardly the drop in install they claim. Also, there where no oem harness adapters available for this vehicle, and wire ID was not in the instructions. I had to go online to find this info. I had similiar issues with my JVC DD head unit I bought a couple months ago. The kit required modifiying the factory brackets.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am 40 years old and these speakers are unreal...! Hooked them up to a Profile
2x100 RMS Amp in the rear dash of a 66 Mustang Coupe. Hard to believe all that
sound from just two 6x9's. Bass response is almost "subwoofer like" Don't get me
wrong, they don't "boom" like subwoofers, but if you are into "quality sound" give
them a chance. I run an RCA cable from my Ipod to the amp. Yes you can buy
cheaper speakers, it all comes down to what you want. Sounds like everyone likes
them and since I hate to buy speakers every year, I bought these.

    JBL Grand Touring Series GTO927

Written By Paul, Waxahachie, TX on Friday, April 11, 2008
Installed in a 2003 Chrysler Sebring
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are very nice speakers. I purchased them to replace two Infinity 6x9's that were in the back of my Chrysler Sebring Convertible that blew. Because of the Infinity amp, I had to search around for 2-Ohm speakers and went to Crutchfield after I was unable to find any at local retailers. These speakers sound better than the OEM Infinity's they replaced and make the front speakers sound terrible when I fade between them. I'm replacing those next..

There is still some distortion at higher volumes, but at really high. So high I have to fade to rear to hear the speakers because the front tweeters and 6x9s are distortedly screaming.

The bass response is excellent and the tweeter ads some more treble to the rear (behind your head and rear passengers) and ads to the sound overall with the top down.

    Bass for your buck

Written By Glen, Phoenixville, PA on Tuesday, November 27, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you are replacing door speakers on your vehicle and you want some extra bump, I suggest investing in the JBL GTO927 speakers. They are 2ohm and handle up to 100 watts RMS, what more could you want? I listen to many different types of music and appreciate bumping bass - and now I have it! These also have a great positional tweeter that puts out clear highs. The tweeter also has a switch on it for choosing either -3 db or 0 db. I have an 06 4Runner, I customized the mounts to replace my front door speakers, slapped these bad boys in there and juiced them up with my Alpine V12 MRV340 amp, which states it puts out 45 watts per channel @ 2ohms and WOW! I know that it does not sound like a lot of power, but my side mirrors vibrate now and you can feel the bass hit deep in your gut. I will soon be replacing my brand new Sony rear door speakers with the JBL GTO 6.5", because I know how good it will sound! Of course, if you want crazy loud bass - go buy yourself a sub, for me this will do just fine.

    Great Sounding Speakers!!!

Installed these in a 2007 Nissan Frontier KC. Installation was easy. Speakers have great bass w/o an amp. First pair of JBL's, but after this pair I will definitely consider JBL in the future.

    Great Speakers!

Written By audiophile, Sacramento, CA on Friday, September 07, 2007
Installed in a 2001 Toyota Camry
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers sounds great. The midrange and highs are clear and clean. At loud volumes they still sound good without being too harsh. Gotta love the 2 Ohm impedance since it allows my amplifier to provide 80W RMS instead of just 60W. The only complaint I have is that the screws are way too long. They are slightly over 2 inches long and it makes installation in the rear deck really difficult since the rear windshield gets in the way. My 2001 Toyota Camry rear windshield does not even have a steep angle so I imagine it must be even more difficult to install these speakers in cars with very angled windshields. I tried using a stubby screwdriver but still can't do it. I finally had to buy some shorter screws at the hardware store. Overall, great speakers but just be aware that you might need to get some shorter screws (which shouldn't be too hard to find).

    JBL Grand Touring Series GTO927

Great speakers at a great value. Speakers have awsome bass for a 6 by 9. They take everything my year old Pioneer will dish out. They have a nice full sound. Its just a great all around speaker, no complaints about them.

I have a 1999 honda si. It does take some time to do this. I had to apart the side panels and seat out just to get to my speakers. But it was worth all the time I put into it and the money I saved by doing it myself.

    JBL Grand Touring Series GTO927

Written By Crutchfield, Philadelphia on Thursday, May 10, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed these in an '03 civic coupe - Not easy - after pulling apart the the back seat found that the holes didn't line up nor did the magnet clear the trunk torsion bar on the passenger side and had to drill new holes in the basket and create a home made lift.
Swapped out into a '98 civic and they fit like a glove.

Matched with an Alpine HU and sound pretty good but can't handle deep bass so I have to keep the Bass Engine toned down somewhat. Foam Baffles made a huge difference in bass response.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers sound great. They produce loud clean bass without the aid of an amp. The tweeters are also excellent, you can point them in almost any direction to suit your taste and you can change the dB setting on them as well. I installed them in my 2003 Civic and my only complaint is that they do not fit perfectly. They are deeper than the factory speakers and I had to remove the spring rods for my trunk in order to get them to lay flush in my rear deck. So now I'll have to figure out a way to make the speakers sit higher so I can re-install the springs in my trunk.

    Great sound, pretty hard installation

Installed in a 1998 Toyota Camry XLE
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'll start with the installation, which was definately NOT easy. In my '98 toyota camry I had to take out the back seats, side panels, and then the rear deck, only to realize that the holes don't match up with the car. So I broke out the drill and a couple hours later, they were finally in. The wiring harness crutchfield gave me was really short, but I stretched the wires out and they fit without too much problem. And when I finally switched them on, oh man, there was sooo much bass my car began to rattle. So I went to ACE hardware and picked up some rubber washers and now they just sound great!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are awesome speakers, I just completed my system with these in the rear deck of a tricked out '05 civic and they sound great, but make sure your using an amplifier to push them for maximum sound. At 100 watts RMS, most receivers just don't put out enough power to give these bad boys the juice they want. Luckily, I also have two ten inch Sony subs to give me the bass I need. Also important to note that these are 2-ohm speakers (rare for small speakers) which I didn't realize when I bought them so they'll take all you can give them! So... without an amp, don't expect much bass from them, otherwise, they make a great rear treble/mid source!

    Price AND Quality, wow

Written By Adam, Houston, TX on Wednesday, December 06, 2006
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, installing these into an 00 civic is tough. After an hour or so of ripping out the back seats and the side panels, I got these speakers in just before dark. As soon as I put them in, I gave them a test. Both my friend and myself just said "wow."

These speakers stomp all over the factory ones, and for 130 bucks, you can't beat 'em. The pivoting tweeter is cool because I can pivot it towards the back and turn the volume down so they don't put out too much trebel. I am very satisfied with these speakers, and strongly reccomend them for the budget-minded enthusiast.

I honestly can't think of anything really wrong with these speakers, they rock!
