Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Our take on the Infinity Reference 6012si

by Ken Nail

You probably spend more time listening to music in your car than in your home. Why not enjoy home speaker sound quality when you're on the road?

Infinity Reference 6012si 6-1/2" speakers feature silk dome tweeters that would be right at home in your living room speakers. These sweet-sounding domes deliver crisp, clear response, yet won't fatigue the ears.

Infinity designed their Plus One+ woofers with more surface area than other 6-1/2" speakers, for higher efficiency and improved bass output. A sturdy rubber surround suspends the cone in its non-resonant powder-coated steel basket. And the 6012si requires less mounting depth than most other 6-1/2" models, so it can fit into more vehicles.

Settle into the driver's seat and make the most of your daily drive time with the exceptional sound of Infinity Reference speakers.

Highlights:

  • 2-way car speakers for 6-1/2" and 6-3/4" locations
  • Plus One+ poly woofer cone with hi-roll rubber surround
  • 3/4" silk dome tweeter
  • power range: 2-50 watts RMS (150 watts peak power)

    Features

Plus One+ Woofer Cones: Each speaker uses a cone significantly larger than other speakers of the same size. This is accomplished by using a unique basket design and hi-roll surround. The Plus One+ design offers greater bass output and a significant increase in efficiency.

Woofer Materials: Each woofer is constructed from Injection-Molded Polypropylene. This process of cone molding assures a uniform cone thickness for superior linearity and clarity. It is also lighter weight and more rigid for decreased distortion and improved bass response.

Hi-roll Rubber Surrounds: The hi-roll rubber surrounds allow the woofers a greater range of movement, resulting in longer X-max and more bass output.

3/4" Silk Dome Tweeters: Each speaker uses a 3/4" edge-driven silk dome tweeter for smooth, accurate highs.

Intermount III: Infinity's Intermount III mounting system allows the 6012si speakers to fit in 6-1/2" and 6-3/4" applications. Metal and plastic adapter rings are included for each speaker.

    great speakers

Written By Rory, New Milford, CT on Monday, April 23, 2007

installed these in the front and rear doors of my 2001 S10 Crew Cab. overall they are great speakers, unless you are pushing a lot of bass, then you might want to think about crossovers. i had alpine type S's in my old car and they cant even come close to the quality of the references this is a good price too.

    Outstanding Clarity

Written By Robert, Kalamazoo, MI on Monday, April 16, 2007
Installed in a 2000 Honda Insight
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in the front doors of my 2000 Honda Insight, and they fit perfectly with no modifications required. These speakers continue to sound better and better as they break in. They have outstanding clarity and smooth highs, as does every Infinity I've ever heard. Instrumentals and vocals sound just fantastic! Bass is adequate but not fabulous, but they are limited by their size and thus I don't knock them for it. I set the high-pass filter on my head unit (Kenwood KDC-X591) to 60 Hz, which eliminated muddy washed-out sounding bass at the expense of some thump.

I am planning on adding a compact powered subwoofer at some point, just to round out the bottom end, but even by themselves they're leaps and bounds better than the stock speakers. I recommend them highly.

    Infinity update

Written By Gary, Bakersfield, CA on Saturday, April 14, 2007
Installed in a 1995 Plymouth Voyager
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently inherited a 1995 Plymouth Voyager with the factory Infinity audio system. After replacing the OEM headunit due to a disfunctional clock and adding a 6CD changer and Sirius receiver, I thought I'd swap out the 12 year old OEM Infinity speakers for more up to date versions. Hence my purchase of these 6012si References and the matching 5.5" dash and 6x9" door panel Refs. First, I think the 6x9s would have worked in the rear hatch eventhough Crutchfield indicates they would not. Both the 6012s and the 6x9s were more difficult to install than expected. I had to drill holes in the door mounts to get the 6x9s in. I don's know what Chrysler was thinking when they faced the door panel speakers directly into the front seat bolsters, rendering them nearly inaudible except when the doors are open. The 5.5s fit the instrument panel perfectly though and were the easiest to install.

Overall, the sound quality is good. As expected, light on bass and treble is excellent. They still need to "break in" but I'm not sure the whole swap is enough of an improvement over the old OEM Infinitys to have justified the cost of replacement. I guess speaker technology hasn't improved as much as I anticipated. Live and learn.

Good speakers, not so good instructions

Written By jacky, Grapevine, TX on Monday, April 09, 2007
Installed in a 1999 Toyota Tacoma

The speakers are a good value. I got them on sale. I'ved used Crutchfield for years; always good instructions, great customer service. These instructions were not up to par with others. I had to improvise a bit (break out the Dremel). It took me about 2-3 hours to removal the OEM's and install the new ones. They sound good, but don't have a lot of bass. Ijust use my rear speakers for the bass.

    Infinity Reference 6012si

Written By Mark, San Diego, CA on Monday, March 19, 2007
Installed in a 2006 Honda Ridgeline
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced the stock speakers in a 07 Honda Ridgeline with these. I did not realize how bad the stock speakers were until I installed these. I do not have a problem with a lack of bass because I have the factory installed subwoofer. The highs are much more crisp and I feel that I am hearing the music as it is intended.

Just using the instructions I would not have been able to install. Just know that you will need to drill holes to install the adapter bracket. Actually you will need afix the metal bracket included with the speaker to the adapter bracket supplied by Crutchfield. You will then attach the speaker to the metal bracket. You will also need to cut off the long screws supplied with the speaker once you have installed the metal bracket on the plastic adapter bracket... if that makes any sense.

It took me 2 hours to do the first speaker and an hour to do the other three.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love the speakers because they offer excellent clarity for vocals and instrumentation. I also have bass blockers on them to keep them from blowing out and they work great. Since I have Infiniti 6x9's in the rear bass isn't a real problem. My only problem is that Crutchfield didn't give me any screws to connect the speakers to the adaptor. Other than that (1/2 hour finding screws) things were great. Speakers 5 and no screws make if a four.

    All I expected

Written By Paul, Redmond, WA on Saturday, February 10, 2007

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As others have noted, these speakers are not going to shake you with bass. Being shallow 6.5's, though, one shouldn't expect that.

The high frequencies truly sparkle, and mid-range is clear, tight and full. With even a small (8") subwoofer, though, the sound is fantastic.

I have these in the back deck, with a pair of 6.5" Kappa components up front and an 8" Kappa sub in the trunk. A similar setup would more than satisfy anyone who's not looking to shake the windows.

Overall, I've preferred Infinity speakers to everything I've owned except some very pricey Boston Acoustics. The only disappointment I've had was with the white-cone Reference series. After less than 3 years in the back deck, the cones literally fell apart. They were like crumbled parchment. These, though appear more substantial and I'll hope for better longevity.

    #1 in Clarity.

Written By Tyler, Hawaii on Friday, February 09, 2007

I used to only believe in alpine products until i recenly heard how clear Infinity's are and have purchased them ever since. My only complaint is that i wish it had a pivoting tweeter. Also get the dynamat for the doors or wherever your installing new speakers, because the music will sound so much fuller with it than without it. My system consists of infinity 6 1/2's and 2 12in infinty kappa perfects running off a jl audio 500/1 amp.

These speakers play good mids and highs, but the lows are just not there. In fact, my factory speakers, which aren't even quite 6.5's, played deeper bass with less distortion. Later I switched from the factory radio to a new Pioneer receiver, which improved the sound a little but it still can't match the bass of the former system.

    Great Speaker

Written By Alexander, Sonoma, CA on Saturday, February 03, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a '99 Honda Accord with an aftermarket Kenwood deck and a new set of 6x9's in the rear. The 6x9's really take care of the bass so a sub isnt very necessary and these speakers in the front make such a difference as well. I used to only have aftermarket 6x9's but they dont make half the difference in highs and mids as these Infinity's do. I listen to all genres of music and they all sound so much more natural now. For the price, these are truly an excellent buy.

The only reason why I give these speakers 4 stars are because the mounting screws used for my car (supplied by infinity) are only about 1/8'' long, and it just seems like a recipe for a rattle.

Just put these in my '01 GMC Jimmy front doors and at first I was kind of disapointed. The bass was there just not real strong. Not enough juice was the problem. A buddies cheap amp and some wiring later and those babies rock! 50-75RMS is what you'll need. Incredible upgrade for those who don't want subs but you will have to go all the way or no way.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Put these in the front doors of an '05 Civic relatively easily. Had to drill new holes for the included speaker mounts which the speakers barely fit into (could only get two screws in each speaker to bracket mount because speakers are a bit wider than the brackets). I got all of the door panel to snap back in except for the one around the speaker, can't really tell the difference though. It was a tight fit, but the speakers sound great...lots of treble! With an amplifier, these would make a perfect system. Two thumbs up.

    Good mid grade speakers

Written By Todd, Dark Star, Colorado on Tuesday, January 23, 2007

As stated in previous reviews, these are NOT subwoofers. However, they are very good speakers for most music. If you are a thumper adict, get yourself a real subwoofer, 6 1/2" coaxials aren't made for that.

I have these in the back door of a 2004 Dodge Quad Cab (1500) (6x9 Kappas in front) and they sound very good. Clean, crisp and precise sound. I have the LF cutoff set at 80 and they seem to be handling the bass above that very well.

Factory Replacement in 2001 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab w/Infinity System

Written By Troy, Decatur, IL on Wednesday, January 17, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first impression taking them out of the box was "man these babies are going to perform". Boy was I wrong. They were overall quieter than the originals. The bass sounded like the speaker was mounted in a plastic cup. Although they offered a little bit more of a broader upper mid to high range, with no type of low end they are not a good choice for any type of music. Another thing to keep in mind is that I use the back of my cab with the seats up all of the time so I don't have the room for a subwoofer. I know they are only 6 1/2", but Infinity brags about clean tight bass. I can get the same quality for half the price in the Pioneers. By the way, I gave them 2 stars because they actually produced decent (better quality but quieter) sounding highs.

    Great value

Written By Eric, Oklahoma City, OK on Wednesday, January 03, 2007
    Installed in a 2000 GMC Sierra 1500
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to replace the factory Infinity speakers in the doors of my Dakota. Sound quality is good with the speakers being powered modestly by my 16W Alpine head unit. Low frequencies are clean and controlled, but not particularly deep. This makes for a good complement to my Infinity Kappa Perfect sub. Without the sub, these wouldn't be completely satisfying for bass-heavy music.

Mids and highs are clean and crystal clear. I was a bit disappointed that these didn't have a pivoting tweeter, since the door speakers are set low in the door and my ankles get more of the high frequencies than my ears do. But because the tweeters are plenty loud, I can compensate by just cranking the treble.

Installation was pretty easy, though Infinity's directions on using their included mounting system are minimal, and the screws that mount the plastic 6 3/4" adapter plate are way longer than they need to be, and I had to cut them off to get them to work with my factory speaker bracket. All in all, I'd call these a good buy.
