My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Our take on the Alpine MRX-F30

by Buck Pomerantz

Alpine's X-Power amplifiers use the latest amp technology to play your music loud and clean without taking up much space. And these super-compact amps employ some of the same circuitry developed for Alpine's top-of-the-line PDX digital amps so they'll bring exceptional sound to almost any ride.

The MRX-F30 4-channel amp puts out 50 watts RMS per channel, so you'll have plenty of volume to fill your listening space with music. You can even use it in 2-channel mode to drive a pair of components or subs with 150 watts each. Onboard frequency filters let you tailor the output to fit your setup, and a bass boost on the rear channels helps to fatten up the sound.

A power management system optimizes the amp's performance and keeps the music playing, even when you're pushing it hot and hard for a long time. Speaker-level inputs with an automatic turn-on feature simplify system hook-up.

    Features

MRX Amplifier Design: Class-D amplifiers boast higher efficiency, produce much less heat, and draw less current than traditional Class-AB amps. The new MRX series benefits from the technology trickledown from Alpine's more expensive PDX amps, including Direct FET final outputs, thermal management processor, 6-Layer Glass Epoxy PC Board; combining to create a high-end sound quality without the bulky heat sinks required by most amps in this power class.

Power Management Processor: The multi-stage Power Management Processor continuously monitors component temperatures throughout the amplifier and decreases power output if anything gets too hot. When playing music under heavy loads for long periods, the circuit automatically reduces power output slightly at first, and then further in a second stage if necessary. This two stage approach provides an interruption free listening experience.

Multi-Channel Design: The Alpine MRX-F30 is a 4-channel amplifier, basically two independent 2-channel amplifiers built into one chassis. Either side can be bridged so it can be used as a 4-channel, 3-channel, or 2-channel amplifier. The amplifier is stable down to 2-ohms in stereo, and 4-ohms when bridged.

CEA 2006 Compliant: The MRX-F30's power ratings are measured according to the strict standards dictated by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards allow you to accurately compare the rated power output of all CEA 2006-compliant amplifiers, even different brands. Manufacturers who adhere to the standards can display the CEA 2006 logo on their products and packaging.

    • Four-Channel (4-ohm): 50 watts x 4-channels into 4-ohms measured from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz with no more than 0.07% THD+N
    • Four-Channel (2-ohm): 75 watts x 4-channels into 2-ohms measured from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz with no more than 0.09% THD+N
    • Bridged (4-ohm): 150 watts x 2-channels into 4-ohms measured from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz with no more than 0.09% THD+N

Signal-to-Noise: When measured under CEA-2006 conditions (reference 1 watt into a 4-ohm load) the signal to noise ratio is 87 dBA. Measured at the rated power output S/N is 104 dB.

Verification Certificate: The amplifier comes with a certificate that lists the RMS power output measured from that specific amplifier. It also lists the model number, serial number, test date, and the test conditions (voltage and impedance).

Wide Frequency Response: The Alpine MRX-F30 offers a wide frequency range (5 Hz-45 kHz, +0/-3 dB), much wider than the range of human hearing.

Auto Turn On: When using the speaker level inputs the X-Power amplifiers automatically turn on when voltage is detected on the signal inputs, making them an easy factory system upgrade.

Low Output Impedance: With low output impedance, the MRX-F30 outputs tightly controlled bass, with a damping Factor rated at greater than 500.

LED: The top panel LED power indicator glows blue when the amplifier is turned on.

    Controls

Gain: The MRX-F30 provides independent rotary controls for the front and rear channels to set the amplifier's gain according to the level of the incoming signal. The line-level input gain settings are continuously variable from 200 mV to 4.0V; the speaker-level input gain settings are continuously variable from 500 mV to 10.0V.

Crossover Mode: There are also independent crossovers for the front and rear channels; each can be set to Off (full range), HP (high pass), or LP (low-pass).

Crossover Frequency: You can independently select the crossover frequency for the front and rear channel crossovers; each is continuously variable from 50 to 400 Hz. The crossover slope is 12 dB/oct.

Bass EQ: Bass boost can be applied to the rear channels. It's variable from 0 to +12 dB and centered at 50 Hz.

    Connections

Power/Ground/Remote: The MRX-F30 features set-screw terminals for the Power, Ground and Remote Turn-on inputs. The Power and Ground terminals will accommodate up to 4 gauge wire (Alpine recommends 8 gauge minimum), the Remote Turn-on terminal will accept up to 8 gauge wire.

Speaker Outputs: The screw terminal speaker outputs accept spade connectors up to 0.33" wide.

Line Level Input: The Alpine MRX-F30 has four female RCA jacks labeled CH1/CH2 (front) and CH3/CH4 (rear).

Speaker Level Input: Use the included speaker level input harnesses if the connected radio has no preamp outputs.

Fuses: The amp is protected by two 25-amp ATO fuses.

    Great amp

Written By Ryan, Pa on Sunday, November 20, 2011

This amp is great, ive tried six different amps before i got to this one. Ive had sound ordnance 4075,polk pa 660, alpine mrp-f300, kenwood kac 8405, infinity kappa four, jbl 80.2. None of these compare to this amp once i got it. The sound ordnance is a great amp, i just didnt like the size of it for in my trunk. The infinity kappa is a great amp but draws a lot of power from car. I had all these amps matched up to infinity kappa 62.9i and 692.9i and none of them satisfied me until i got to this alpine mrx-f30. I finally blew the kappa 62.9i with this amp and then i recently purchased the polk mm651 and mm691, and these are great. The amp actually puts out more than 100w x 4 at 2 ohms, and 60w at 4 ohms. i can turn the cd player up the whole way and the amp gain is pretty well at the farthest spot, and there is no distortion just loud music. GREAT AMP, crystal clear. buy it.
    Pros:
    clarity and power
    Cons:
    nothing

    Another A+ Alpine product

Written By Dave, MA on Tuesday, September 20, 2011

I've owned a couple of Alpine amps in the past and was always impressed by how clean the sound was, the amount of low-end power they could produce, and how cool the amp itself would stay even after a couple of hours of driving. This new MRX-F30 amp has lived up to the Alpine reputation with those same attributes. I wanted to beef up the sound in my 2011 Jeep Wrangler, so I now have this amp mounted under the passenger side seat- the amp's compact size makes for a PERFECT fit in that location- powering a JL Audio 8" sub in the factory sub enclosure, (off 2 bridged channels) and a pair of aftermarket Infinity speakers in the overhead sound bar. What a drastic improvement! I can actually HEAR the rear speakers now- an infamous issue any Wrangler owner can attest to- and the bass this amp feeds to the sub is clean and clear. The variety of EQ tools on this unit make it very easy to customize the sound to your tastes too, which is great. I left the amp from the factory Infinity system in to continue powering the 4 front speakers, so between that and my new powered rear components, I've finally tweaked the perfect driver's seat sound stage!

    Toss up

Written By Doug, US on Monday, August 15, 2011

Great product but there is only one thing that may be a deal breaker for most but wasn't for me, the amp runs strong but it has no inner cooling system so if you are putting it in a tight space you may notice some heat. I have a good size 97' 4runner so I easily mounted it in the trunk with plenty of air room so unless I get right next to it I never notice, this however doesn't affect the quality of sound the amp may be hot at times but it puts out great quality sound.
