Marantz

Our take on the Marantz CD6004

by Dave Bar

It's all about the sound

Warning: listening to this player may become habit forming — its ability to reveal the hidden musical textures and subtle nuances on your favorite tracks may render you incapable of turning it off. The Marantz CD6004 CD player delivers audiophile-quality performance with standard audio CDs, burned CD-R and CD-RW discs, and even the tunes stored on your iPod®. You'll enjoy finely detailed sound alive with warmth and rhythmic energy, thanks to Marantz's precision craftsmanship and carefully selected parts.

Better sound from your iPod®, too

Marantz outfitted the CD6004 with a front-panel USB port — a feature rarely seen on CD players. This port lets you plug in an iPod®, iPhone®, iPad® or even a thumb drive that's loaded with tunes, and enjoy listening to them through your home audio system. Plus, this direct digital connection bypasses your player's built-for-earbuds circuitry, taking advantage of the CD6004's high-end digital-to-analog-converter for the best possible sound from your portable music library.

Trickle-down technology for top performance

The CD6004 borrows technology from Marantz's high-end disc players for out-of-this-world performance at a more down to earth price. Its precision disc transport, double-layered bottom chassis, and reinforced front panel resist vibrations that can adversely affect sound. A hefty power supply delivers plenty of clean current for lively, low-noise playback. And gold-plated outputs help maintain sound quality by ensuring the best signal transfer to your stereo system.

Highlights:

  • plays CDs, CD-Rs & CD-RWs plus MP3, WMA, and AAC CDs
  • front-panel USB input (type A) for USB flash drive, iPod®, iPhone®, or iPad®
  • high-performance 192kHz/24-bit Cirrus Logic CS4398 digital-to-analog converter

    Disc Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Marantz CD6004 Single Disc CD Player can play CD, CD-Text, CD-R, and CD-RW discs. It supports both 12cm and 8cm discs.

CD-TEXT: The Marantz CD6004 supports CD-Text information such as artist name and track titles. The CDs used must also support CD-Text for this feature to work.

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: The CD6004 supports MP3, WMA, and AAC audio files that have been recorded onto CD-R or CD-RW discs in ISO9660 mode 1/2 or Juliet/Romeo disc format. The Marantz CD player will recognize up to 512 total files and folders on a single disc. The unit will also display MP3/WMA tag data information.

    Playable MP3/WMA/AAC Files
File Format Sampling Frequency Bit Rate Extension
    MP3 32/44.1/48 kHz 32-320 kbps .mp3
WMA 44.1 kHz 48-192 kbps .wma
    AAC 32/44.1/48 kHz 8-320 kbps .m4a

    Audio Features

Aluminum/Glass-Resin Front Panel: The CD6004 CD player's front panel is constructed from aluminum and glass-reinforced resin, which resists harmful resonances that can harm sonic quality. The panel is finished in a soft black tone, and features a graceful curvature that complements any home décor.

Double Layered Bottom Plate:  The CD6004 employs a double layered bottom plate to prevent unwanted resonance that could lead to distortion.

CS4398 High-Performance D/A Converter: The CD6004 uses a Super-Audio CD grade 192kHz/24-bit Cirrus Logic CS4398 D/A converter to provide exceptional sound quality. This high-performance D/A converter is capable of handling high definition audio data streams (DSD and 24-bit/192 kHz PCM signals).

CD Playback Technology: During CD play, the PCM signals recorded on the disc are oversampled to 128fs inside the D/A converter and then processed by a combination of the dynamic element matching (DEM) and multi-element switched capacitors to achieve playback characterized by a high linearity.

HDAM-SA2 (High Definition Amplifier Module): The CD6004 utilizes Marantz's Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module, or HDAM, at critical analog circuit junctions to insure smooth and ultra-fast signal transfer from one stage to another. Marantz uses HDAMs instead of standard op-amps, to render a more dynamic sound with less susceptibility to radiated noise, heat, and vibration. The unit uses an HDAM-SA2 for high-speed and high-quality sound.

Current Buffer Design: A current buffer design eliminates interference from preamp input circuitry. In addition, audio outputs are laid out in symmetrical fashion, allowing for more dynamic, accurate, and detailed sound and pinpoint imaging.

Precision System Clock: The CD6004 employs a precision system clock to virtually eliminate any jitter for distortion-free music that sounds like the artist intended.

Audio EX Function: This function turns the player's display and digital output off in order to playback higher sound quality from the unit's analog audio output.  With those two potential noise sources eliminated, you'll be able to hear everything just as the artists intended.

Gold Plated Outputs: The CD player features gold plated outputs in order to offer the best connection for your system. The terminals are chassis-mounted so they can take the strain of audiophile interconnects.

    • Digital Outputs: Two digital outputs, one optical (Toslink) and one coaxial (RCA), are provided for sending signal to the digital input terminals of a receiver, outboard D/A converter, or CD recorder.
    • Analog Output: The CD player also features a stereo RCA output for analog connection.
    • Headphone Output: The unit has a front panel 1/4" headphone jack with level control. The high-grade headphone circuit incorporates a high-speed buffer amplifier to enable headphone listening of high quality sound reproduction.

    USB/iPod Connectivity

USB Port: The CD player features a front-panel USB (type-A) port. The front panel port is designed for USB (MSC) devices or direct iPod/iPhone connection. The front panel USB port is compatible with FAT16/FAT32 file systems and will play MP3, WMA, AAC, and WAV files. The CD6004 can support 700 folders and 65,535 files per folder. The unit will also display MP3/WMA tag data information. The front-panel controls and supplied wireless remote will operate your USB device or iPod/iPhone.

    Playable MP3/WMA/AAC/WAV Files
File Format Sampling Frequency Bit Rate Extension
    MP3 32/44.1/48 kHz 32-320 kbps .mp3
WMA 44.1 kHz 48-192 kbps .wma
    AAC 32/44.1/48 kHz 8-320 kbps .m4a
Linear PCM 32/44.1/48 kHz 16-bit .wav

iPod/iPhone Direct: You can connect your iPod or iPhone to the front-panel USB port using the USB/Dock cable supplied with your iPod (not included with this unit).  Sound quality is maximized by using the USB connection along with the CD6004's D/A converter. Playback can be controlled using the front panel or remote buttons, or the iPod/iPhone itself. You can browsed your iPod/iPhone's music library from the CD6004 by Album, Artist, Genre, Playlist, or Track. The CD6004 will also display song/artist information, as well as charge your iPod/iPhone. The unit is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compliant and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features (as of December 2011):

I wish I could give it 5 Stars, but there's one thing about it...

Written By Eric, Livermore, CA on Wednesday, April 17, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

One of the things that I was REALLY looking forward to was that this unit was built in Japan. You can see "Made in Japan" in the pictures, and one of the other reviewers stated, "Well made in Japan, not China". Well... NOT MINE. It's stamped very clearly, "MADE IN CHINA". What a disappointment! For that I can only give 4 stars. However, I have to now explain my learning curve: I have a nice ONKYO home theatre receiver (TX-SR805), and REALLY nice speakers (Polk RTiA9). When I added the Marantz CD player to my system I made the mistake of running the signal to the receiver using a fiber optic cable (thinking that was best). The sound was very unimpressive. I was crushed that I had bought the speakers that I have drooled over for YEARS and then adding the CD player was a bust. I should have called Crutchfield first, but I instead poured myself into the manuals, searching different settings trying to find my mistake. When I couldn't figure it out, I went to the Guru's at the Home Theatre section of Fry's Electronics. They couldn't tell me anything that I didn't already know. Feeling sad and rejected, I mourned for weeks until it dawned on me. I'm not using the Marantz D.A.C.!!! OMG! I hurried home to replace the optic line with a Monster stereo cable and then, and THEN... I could breathe again. It sounded AWESOME! I had to crank some Dave Matthews until the kids told me I was being too loud. "Just one more song, son. I promise" It's a great unit, but, Made in CHINA?!?
    Pros:
    Looks Great. Sounds Awesome
    Cons:
    Made in China?!?

    Simplicity and quality

Written By Jay R, Minneapolis, MN on Thursday, March 21, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Marantz name impressed me Performance is excellent, and simple, single disc operation is reassuring. The controls are a bit arcane, and the reliance on the remote control, belies the otherwise simple design. I like the clean all black look, no hokey brushed plastium panels. It is everything it claims to be well done.
    Pros:
    Simple design
    Cons:
    No complaints yet.

I thought Excellent, but know this..

Written By Chris M, Baltimore, MD on Thursday, February 21, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Before purchasing this product, I researched CD players at this level for about 4 months. I was excited about the review comparisons between the CD 6004 and the lower level CD 5004. I also had read a lot of customer and professional reviews that stated this player is one of the best bangs for the buck. I finally went ahead with the purchase. Here is my current system: Marantz PM-7001 Amp, Infinity SM-165 speakers & BU-80 subwoofer In the beginning, I hooked it up and played a plethora of different style CD's. At first I wasn't very impressed in comparison to my old Sansui x-301i 20 year old cd player. Then I heard an unbelievablely different distinction at the high end of one of my tracks on Dark Side of the Moon. It was awesome. I never heard that before. It is true what others say that you can hear individual instruments and different effects on tracks on this CD player unlike models with lesser DACs. The reason this player is only getting 4 out of 5 stars is that the listening experience is hampered by the fact that the midrange is overly loud. Unlike my old one it's subtle but noticable. I've seen this issue in some professional reviews but dismissed it as an audiophile issue only- that I would never be good enough to hear it. Well I can. Adjusting the Bass and Treble gain on my amplifier mitigates the issue but I lose flexibility then.

I think it's a fantastic purchase if you have an AVR or Equalizer that compensates via sound field settings. I am planning on keeping it
    Pros:
Clean Clean Sound, Great looking, Rock Solid Build, Nice options, looks and feels professional, you can Definately hear more detail in the sound. Tighter more accurate Bass
    Cons:
    Soundfield and midrange is overstated

Well made in Japan, not China. Plays even slightly scratched CDs with no problem. Sound is excellent. Remote is well thought out. Controls are easy to read and access, unlike Harman products.
    Pros:
    Excellent player.
    Cons:
A little pricey. No included digital cables.

Great CDP except for one thing

Written By Chris, ID on Thursday, October 18, 2012

In spite of the fact that it's claimed this CDP handles CD-RW discs, I've had no success using Window's Media Player or iTunes (10.7) burned discs to play in this machine. They play just fine in my Onkyo C-S5VL, however. I keep getting a SubQ error and will try getting in touch with Marantz to see if they have any ideas. I don't think there's a problem with the machine as it works fine otherwise.

Other than this annoyance, I love the player. I have the Marantz PM8004 and they are a well matched pair. I'm using NHT SuperOne speakers and this is my idea of a "compact" stereo system!
    Pros:
Built well, attractive, plays pre-recorded CD's just fine.
    Cons:
Will not play burned CD-RW discs in spite of being advertised to do so.

A class better then my old Marantz CD6000

Written By KC5100, El Paso, TX on Friday, August 10, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought an open box unit to replace my aging 10 yr old Marantz CD6000. The shipment arrived well packaged, sealed like never been used. The only way to tell the "open box" was the Crutchfield tape on top, and the warranty sheet (It still has 3-yr warranty by Marantz). Anyway, I ran a CD to play it in repeat mode for 50+ hrs to break-in, then hooked it up to my Marantz PM7001+KEF Cresta 2 speakers (bi-wired). Immediately I can hear the louder, more punchy base. I tested with 4 CDs (Eric Clapton's Tears in Heaven, Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love you, Celine Dion's My heart Will Go On, Eagle's Hotel California) the bass is loud and clear. At some points my KEF speakers could not handle the treble. In summary, CD6004 outputs higher range of analog signal frequency in the low and high ends. I think it may be time to upgrade my speakers. I would be interesting to borrow a unit of PM6004 to hear how they sound together.

    Marantz CD 6004

Written By TJJr, Olympia,WA on Saturday, August 04, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been listening to good stereo systems since the sixties. This is my fourth CD player since 1985, and although it isn't the most expensive player I've had, I think it's by far the best. I'm using a Marantz PM7001 amp and Bose AM-5 speakers, and the sound is clear, warm and rich, as best as I can describe it. I listen to virtually all types of music.
    Pros:
The clarity of the sound is startling. I can hear the individual instruments and voices so clearly that I'm hearing things on old CD's that i never heard before.
    Cons:
It's taking a little while to get accustomed to the remote and its commands.

Excellent sound. An improvement from my Kenwood CD206 cd player. Music sounds better than I tought. Bass is so clear my SVS sub dances. This machine send just the perfect amount of bass, super detailed mids and super high sounds. I thought all cd player were the same thing but this proves me I was so wrong. if you are planning to byu a cd player this is the one for you. Thanks Crutchfield for your always excellent service.
    Pros:
Excellent sound gives life to your old cds not to mention the new ones. Fast reading. Quiet cd player.

    Marantz C.D. 6004

Written By Rod L., Riverton, Wy on Tuesday, February 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The best C.D. player I've ever bought. I've owned 3 other brands throughout the years. The Marantz is by far the best sounding hands down. I wish I would have bought one a long time ago.
    Pros:
I like the design, specs, large remote.
    Cons:
I've noticed that some Heavy Metal C.D.'s sound a little harsh

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Performance is very remarkable. I connected it to two (2) different inputs on my Onkyo TX-SR806, both analog and digital coaxial. I experienced a very detail and clean sound, thanks for the Marantz and Onkyo. For the price, I don't need anything more and am truly satisfied with it. Here's my sincere thanks to the Crutchfield Advisors Pete and Jenny.
    Pros:
With USB input at the front/convenience for any latest Ipod models. Sound is the same quality like CD.
    Cons:
    Nothing..

    Marantz CD6004

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow! And all these years I thought these things were essentially the same. It's just 1's and 0's right? I took advantage of the combo package that Crutchfield was offering and purchased this with its companion amplifier. I couldn't be happier. I started by connecting my new CD6004 to my 35 year-old Onkyo A-7 with attached Klipsch Heresy speakers. The resulting clarity was totally unexpected. I guess there really is a difference in what DAC is being used. I had no idea that those old disks had that much information on them. I'm hearing details in the sound that I just haven't heard before. I highly recommend this product and Crutchfield, as usual, got it to me quickly and well packed. Many thanks!
    Pros:
    Sound, price.

    Marantz CD6004

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking at several different CD players and chose the Marantz CD6004 for several reasons. The main reason was that my advisor Andy said that it would integrate with my Marantz PM8003 integraged amp, plus the DAC converter would provide audiophile quality sound from my IPod. I'm just now starting to play with this medium. I'm basically old school when it comes to stereo. CDs and vinyl in particular. Andy you were dead on with the sound reproduction.

The sound from my old CDs was like discovering them all over again. The newer ones really made my speakers sing(Bowers-Wilkins 684 Floor Standing). One of the first CD played was Proto-Kaws Forth. The sax reproduction was great as well as Lynn Meredith's vocals.

Kudos to Crutchfield and Marantz for the good service and producing at great CD Player for the money. I'd put it up against one twice as much.
    Pros:
    Great value. Superb sound.

    Marantz CD6004

Written By Larry C, Up State NY. on Monday, January 30, 2012

I have to say, this cd player does have a really smooth analog sound to it. plus the detail and crisp clean sound also. Was very impressed for the price of the machine. I also use a cambridge 740c player also, which is a little more analyitcal and also more expensive. Also their is a feature on the marantz, called audio EX-2 which I leave on all the time. It turns off your display and the digital out for better sound playback. For a new machine I highly recommend this marantz cd player. You will truly like it. I use a intergrated tube amp, with a pair of klipsch RB-81 II bookshelf speakers.
    Pros:
A FANTASTIC CD PLAYER AT THIS PRICE.

    Marantz CD 6004

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Natural sounding CD player with very simple and user-friendly interface. One of the features that I like is the stealth mode when playing music. You can set it to show the display for a few seconds when a song starts and then the whole machine goes dark. The USB input on the front is so handy. It's not just iPods and MP3 players that it recognizes. I have a 4GB thumb drive that I stick into the machine. It sounds great and I can put it on shuffle. The only drawback for me was the remote. It's rather large and has a volume control, but that does not work if you only have the CD player. It's designed to be paired with the Marantz receiver. Not a big deal, but you can't control the CDs output level. I still would recommend this unit. Looks and sounds great and is fun to use.

    Marantz CD6004

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow, this cd player has exceeded my expectations! It took some burn-in to sound its best, but this player is worth every penny of its asking price. Read the What Hi-Fi review of this player as well, it describes its sound to a tee. It is very well built, and easy to operate. The sound is full-bodied, dense, dynamic, spacious, and has excellent timbre, speed and pace. The resolution of detail is truly remarkable. I tried it with a Headamp GS-1 headphone amp and Sennheiser HD600 headphones, and its a match made in heaven. I can switch out interconnects between the Marantz CD6004 and the Headamp GS-1, and can easily hear the sonic differences between the various interconnects that I have. Remarkable! In comparison my Marantz CD5001 sounds sort of thin, flat, pale, and does not have the high-end extension, or dynamics that the CD6004 effortlessly reproduces. The SA8001 sounds slighly more harsh, and sounds more mechanical than the CD6004. The only drawback that I can find is that if you playback excessively bright or compressed cd's, it will reveal every wart and flaw in them. But it truly excels on good, average, or audiophile type recordings. I really am enthusiastic about this player, and truly thankful that Marantz made it available to the US market. They did an exceptional job with this player. I also can't say enough about Crutchfield outstanding customer service and quick free shipping! Great job Marantz and Crutchfield!

    Pros:
Exceptional detail resolution, clarity, spacious, exciting, dynamic sounding, excellent bass.
    Cons:
Can be somewhat harsh with bad recordings

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's very rare nowaday that something is still Made in Japan or Made in USA, U know that it's all about quality works that being put into this unit, when I buy an electronic products, I prefer they Made in Japan, they have a good record of producing robust, reliable electronic products.
    Pros:
I bought this unit because it let u control all the ipod features using the remote control, the sound is clearer, both the high and low,I could hear more details in a songs than before,at first I thought something is going wrong with my speakers, but more careful listening, it just the player being able to play all the hidden notes(details) that my other cd unit couldn't produce. For the price, I think is very reasonable, a cd player with USB(Ipod).
    Cons:
CD loading time takes a little longer than my other cd player, but that ok.
