Why add a powered subwoofer?

A powered subwoofer gives you bass you can feel as well as hear. Our customers love the depth and impact their subs add to music and movies. We hear comments like "it brings out sounds I didn't know existed in discs I've watched a million times." Powered subwoofers aren't just for big bass that rattles your picture frames; they can also deliver tight, accurate lows. If you haven't shopped for a powered sub in a while, you might be surprised at how small they get. Look for an ultra-compact model if you want to tuck your sub away under an end table or in a corner.

Our take on the Klipsch SW-308

by Kristen Schaub

Save space and get big bass
You'll definitely feel the deep, intense bass that this little sub pumps out — but will you see it? Maybe if you know where to look. The Klipsch® SW-308 sports a high-output 300-watt amplifier to produce accurate, room-filling bass unexpected from a sub so small. The strong-yet-light 8" woofer is designed for quick, precise movement. It teams up with an 8" passive radiator that creates an extra mid-bass boost. And since this sub measures only about a cubic foot, you won't have any trouble finding room for it under a coffee table or next to your sofa.

Highlights:

  • 300-watt RMS BASH® digital hybrid amplifier
  • 8" front-firing woven fiberglass driver
  • two 8" side-firing passive radiators
  • four-layer aluminum-wound voice coils for high output
  • frequency response 26-120 Hz (±3dB)
  • variable 40-150 Hz crossover
  • phase and gain adjustment
  • auto on/off
  • line level/LFE (low frequency effects) input
  • compatible with the Klipsch WA-2 wireless audio adapter kit for an easy connection to a sound system
  • 11"W x 11-7/16"H x 13-15/16"D
  • warranty: 2 years

    Features

BASH Digital Hybrid Class AB Amplifier: The Klipsch SW-308 powered subwoofer features a highly efficient BASH digital hybrid class AB amplifier which produces reliable, high-powered sound. The built-in amplifier is rated at 300 watts RMS (650 watts Peak). The RMS power rating indicates power available on a continuous, long-term basis. The Peak power rating indicates power available for large, short-term peaks in your music or movie soundtrack.

Digital Sound Processing: The Klipsch SW-308 utilizes internal digital sound processing for optimum sound at all volume levels.

8" Fiberglass Woofer: The Klipsch SW-308 powered subwoofer features a front-firing 8" woven fiberglass driver for tight musical bass. The woofer employs a large 4-layer aluminum-wound voice coil for high volume output.

Passive Radiator Design: The Klipsch SW-308 powered subwoofer features a passive radiator design which employs dual side-firing 8" woven fiberglass passive radiators for greater bass reproduction.

Computer Optimized Surrounds: The SW-308's woofer & passive radiators utilize computer optimized rubber surrounds for tighter bass.

Power LED Indicator: Located on the powered subwoofer's front baffle, this LED indicates the operating status of the unit's built-in amplifier. The LED will light red when the amplifier is in standby mode and green when the amplifier is on and receiving a signal. If the LED is dark and not lit, the amplifier is off.

Rubber Feet: The Klipsch powered subwoofer is equipped with four integrated rubber feet to help prevent against vibration.

Placement: Klipsch powered subwoofers are designed to reproduce deep bass and deliver the impact that makes your movies and music come alive. Typically, optimum performance will result if you place the subwoofer in  a corner of the room on the same wall as your front channel speakers.

    Controls

Gain Control: The gain control of the Klipsch SW-308 adjusts the subwoofer's volume relative to the rest of your home audio system. If the Klipsch powered subwoofer is connected to the Subwoofer Output (LFE) on your AV receiver, first set the subwoofer volume level control in the receiver to the "half-way" or the "0-dB" position. Then increase the gain of the subwoofer until the subwoofer's volume level matches the output of your main speakers. After this setup is completed, the volume control of your AV receiver will be the volume control for both the Klipsch powered subwoofer and your connected loudspeakers.

Lowpass Crossover: The Klipsch SW-308 powered subwoofer features a variable lowpass crossover which is adjustable from 40-150Hz. The crossover point chosen determines where low bass frequencies are "handed-off" from your AV system's loudspeakers to the Klipsch powered subwoofer. Set the crossover point based on the size of your systems' main left/right speakers. As a general rule, for larger, floor-standing speakers, set the crossover point between 50-90Hz. If using small bookshelf or satellite speakers for your mains, set the crossover point between 90-150Hz. The smaller the speaker, the higher the setting until the bass frequencies blend well between the loudspeakers and the Klipsch powered sub. If setting the crossover point in the receiver, turn the Lowpass Filter knob on the subwoofer to the farthest point right (150Hz).

Phase: The Klipsch SW-308 powered subwoofer has an adjustable phase control which can be set between 0° and 180°. This control is used to acoustically match the subwoofer's output to your system's main speakers. Select a position between 0° and 180°, in which the subwoofer has more output at your main listening position.

Power Auto/On/Off: The Klipsch powered subwoofer features a 3-way power switch. This is the main AC power switch for the subwoofer. This switch must be in the "On" position for the subwoofer to operate or the "Auto" position for the Auto-On feature to function. Set this switch to the "Off" position if the subwoofer will not be used for an extended period of time. When this switch is in the "Auto" position, the subwoofer will automatically turn on when it senses a signal. It will automatically turn off after 20 minutes with no signal.

    Connections

Line-Level Input: The Klipsch SW-308 powered subwoofer is equipped with a pair of line-level RCA-type inputs. Most of today's AV receivers have a line-level subwoofer output (LFE) labeled Subwoofer Pre Out, Sub Out, or SW Out. If your receiver has this output, connect on end of a subwoofer cable to it and connect the other end of the cable into the powered subwoofer's line-level input labeled "LEFT/LFE". This connection allows the subwoofer to operate with both music and surround sound movies. In absence of a subwoofer (LFE) output on your receiver, as an alternative hookup, you can connect Left & Right channel pre-amp outputs from a receiver to the "Left/LFE" and "Right" input on the powered subwoofer.

WA Port (optional): The Klipsch powered subwoofer is fitted with a proprietary 4-pin "WA-Port" connector for wireless operation, using Klipsch's optional WA-2 wireless subwoofer kit (714WA2, sold separately). The Klipsch WA-2 wireless subwoofer kit consists of two components; a wireless Transmitter & wireless Receiver. The WA-2 wireless subwoofer kit makes adding the Klipsch powered subwoofer to your home theater system much easier, because it replaces the need for a separate subwoofer cable that traditionally must be connected between the receiver and the powered sub. Now, you can easily place your powered subwoofer where it both sounds and looks best in the room since you're not restricted by an audio cable.

    Solves my LFE need highly!

Written By vikm, Dallas, TX on Tuesday, May 21, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Klipsch SW-308 product has highly satisfies my 5.1 HT need. I have a sony STR-DH810 receiver, Bose v201 L/R channel speaker, Bose cube center channel, Bose acoustimass 5 as surround and replaced my bose sub-module with this one. I have a audio calibration blu-ray disc with which I was able to test my subwoofer play test tones ranging between 30Hz - 150Hz @ 5db. The black satin finish and its size match my living room decor perfectly. The bass radiators on each side is much better than floor firing bass radiators or ports (e.g. ProSub 800). I have watched some disney movies and few Christopher Nolan movies (Batman & Inception), they sounded astounding to me. The subwoofer also has cross over control, phase control and power save mode. A great purchase and highly recommend people who love deep tight bass over cabinet rattling bass.
    Pros:
Deep tight bass, solid enclosure prevents floor and cabinet shaking or rattling, Size, color finish and Price.
    Cons:
    None so far.

    Defective

Written By Hicken, Dallas, TX on Sunday, May 05, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this Klipsch SW-308 as a scratch and dent item. When it came it was physically flawless so I was excited to have purchased it at such a discount. However, when I hooked it up the was no power. I checked the fuse and it was blown. After driving 20 miles to the nearest Fry's and replacing the fuse I hooked it up and plugged it in. Pop! Blown fuse. Obviously someone in the scratch and dent department just replaced the fuse without testing it after. I sent it back.
    Pros:
    Nothing I can think of.
    Cons:
Wasted 10 days and a gallon of gas.

    Klipsch SW-308

Written By Bruce, Ryderwood, WA on Thursday, April 25, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a Klipsch SW200 with a downfiring speaker and 200 watts, but it was big and took up a lot of room. I bought the SW-308 mostly for it's size. I wasn't expecting what I got. I was pleased with the SW-200, but amazed with the SW-208. The lows are so much more crisp. Highly recommended.
    Pros:
    Small size, crisp defnition

    Klipsch SW-308 Tight Bass

Written By J, Erie PA on Wednesday, April 24, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very Clean tight bass. Let me tell ya don't let the small size fool ya hits hard and tight sounds great with movies and music. Does not hit the low notes but if that doesn't matter to you, or if you are using for a second rear sub ie surround sound fill, this works very well indeed!
    Pros:
    Size and sound quality
    Cons:
Full price no way, for Crutchfield discount price all day long!

    Awesome!

Written By Dean, Houston, TX on Saturday, April 20, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very impressive clean accurate bass for such a small size! I use it in bedroom mostly for watching tv. Won't blow your windows out but I'm sure the neighbors can hear it. Have Infinity bookshelf speakers mounted on the wall and this gave them the low end boost they needed. Would love to get the same sub only 12 inch for my main entertainment center in living room! My only concern is one day I was jammin to classic Ozzy and had it cranked up for about 45 minutes and it got really hot. I turned it off for a while cause I didn't want to fry it.
    Pros:
Incredible accurate bass in a very small package and reasonably priced.
    Cons:
Gets hot when playing music loud for extended periods.

Small with attitude, like Joe Pesci

Written By WDH, Frederick, MD on Tuesday, January 29, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this for my home office, and I have it paired with a couple Audioengine P4s, an Audioengine NS22 amp (both from Crutchfield), and a SoundBlaster Z as my source. The P4s needed the extra oomph below 60 Hz, and boy did they get it. The sub sits under my desk, so I needed something small. I wasn't looking for room shattering bass either... just low and accurate. The Klipsch really delivers. I have it crossed over at 115 Hz and the gain is set to 7 (it goes to 11). Even at 115 Hz, the bass is not directional to my ear, although it was at 125 Hz. There are bigger and cheaper subs out there, but sometimes you've got to pay more for the innovation that goes into a small sub that can dive below 30 Hz. As another reviewer pointed out, there is one active woofer and two passive radiators. They all look identical, but the active one has a detachable grille over it. After two weeks of listening to jazz, rock, pop, and techno, the bass is tight and controlled, even at the lower frequencies around 30 Hz. With the gain set properly now and EQ off, the bass is perfect; it doesn't overwhelm. On the other hand, if you want it to overwhelm, you can set it that way provided it's not in a giant room. I did all the normal stuff to determine best location. Moving it just 12 inches made a difference. I got the scratch and dent version, but I can find neither. That's a testament to Crutchfield's high standards.
    Pros:
Small: just 11" x 11" x 11". Very clean bass. It's not boomy. Fills my office (about 14' x 16') just fine. Has auto on/off that switches it on after about 2 seconds of an incoming signal.
    Cons:
    No, not one.

This a great sounding sub...it actually has 2 side passive radiators not mentioned, instead of the just one in the description, which is just fine for me more bass I got the wireless kit as well and it works great. And being a cubic foot roughly you can put it any where. the best sub you will find in this price range...but I would hurry this iteem is going away forever once they run out at crutchfield
    Pros:
    Great tight bass....compact
    Cons:
    none...never for a Klipsch product
