Infinity

Our take on the Infinity Kappa 10.9t

by Kristen Schaub

Add some life to your vehicle's sound system with the Infinity Kappa 10.9t tweeters. Install these 1" textile domes — the same tweeters found in many of their popular home speakers — in an appropriate location, and add a new dimension to your music.

The tweeters handle down to 3,500 Hz, so you'll hear lots of definition and detail, no matter where you sit. And they offer frequency response extending all the way up to 35,000 Hz, so they'll reproduce the overtones and harmonics that add realism to your music.

Computer-optimized outboard crossovers allow only the appropriate frequencies to reach the tweeters. Infinity includes mounting hardware to install the tweeters in custom or factory locations.

Highlights:

  • 1" UHF textile dome tweeters
  • 2-ohm impedance
  • flush- and surface-mount hardware included
  • Starfish™ bracket for mounting in factory tweeter locations
  • outboard computer-optimized crossovers
  • power handling: 2-50 watts RMS (150 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 3,500-35,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 93 dB
  • flush-mount depth: 1-5/16"
  • warranty: 3 years

    Features

High-Output Design: The high output 2-ohm voice coil design compensates for the high in-line resistance of small gauge factory wiring and extracts every watt from factory receivers, increasing overall system output and efficiency (relative to 4 ohm speakers). The speakers also benefit from increased power when you upgrade the wire and add aftermarket amplifiers, designed to power a 2-ohm load.

Edge Driven UHF Dome Tweeters: Each speaker has an Edge-driven UHF dome tweeter. The benefit is increased power handling and reduced distortion at high output. This technology also allows for better integration with the mid/woofer. The tweeter wire terminals are set screws, tightened using the included 1mm Allen wrench; they accept bare wire up to 14 gauge.

Tweeter Mounting: The I-Mount tweeter mounting system and Starfish mounting brackets give you several different ways to mount the tweeters:

    • I-Mount Tweeter Mounting System: The tweeters can be surface or flush mounted with Infinity's innovative I-Mount system:
      • Surface Mount: Surface mounting the tweeters involves screwing the surface-mount cup to the mounting location, then inserting and locking the tweeter into the cup.
      • Flush Mount: Flush mounting is made easy through the use of the threaded flush-mount adapter and plastic locking nut. Once a cutout is made, the flush-mount adapter (with the tweeter installed) is inserted into the hole. The large plastic locking nut is threaded onto the adapter (from behind the mounting surface) to hold the complete assembly securely in place. When flush mounted, the tweeters may be angled for optimum response and imaging.
    • Starfish Mounting Brackets: The Starfish mounting brackets allow the tweeters to be installed in factory locations behind the grilles:
      • Surface Mount (behind grille panel): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is screwed to the mounting surface behind the grille panel. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.
      • Flush Mount (behind grille panel): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is dropped into the cutout in the mounting surface behind the grille panel. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.
      • Bottom Mount (to grille panel): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is secured to the underside of the grille panel. The tweeter must be inserted into the bracket and locked into place before the bracket is mounted.
      • Flush Mount (in-dash location): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is dropped into the cutout in the dash. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.

    Not an easy install

Written By SteveS, The Woodlands Tx on Wednesday, December 12, 2012

The speakers look well made on first inpression, but when installing them major problems came up. The set screws that you have to use to install the lead wire are tottally wrong. Way to small. Why not just have a section of wire coming out of the rear of the case. Instead they have over engineered the tweeter. The crossovers are good, clearly marked. A huge assortment of installing brakets are included and once installed the speakers sound very good so far. At least untill those blasted set screws come loose in the doors of the car.
    Pros:
    Sound great.
    Cons:
VERY VERY small set screws to connects the speaker wire? Really!!!!

    Uses inexcusibly tiny screws

Written By Steve S, Orlando, FL on Sunday, July 22, 2012

5 for the audio quality, not 5 for the manufacturing.

The speaker wires are screwed into the tweeters using the smallest screws I have ever seen in my life. Not only are small screws weak, but you will find the screws are so incredibly small that you may not even be able to find the necessary alan wrench if you ever need to. I have found myself needing to rewire these speakers because I've started noticing cracking in one speaker that I assume was caused by a loose wire. Yup, there was a loose wire, but I have no way to attach a new one because I have no way to screw it due to the sub-atomic size of the screw..

There is plenty of room on these speakers for a proper screw so this is a completely inexcusable problem, and to be honest, comes across as downright arrogant on the part of Harman. I have already gone to Home Depot and bought a pack of small wrenches only to find that even this tiny set of wrenches is too large for these screws. THIS IS INEXCUSABLE especially since the only reason the wire came loose was due to the absurd tininess of the screws.

Woe to he who accidentally drops these wildly absurd screws.
    Pros:
Sound great when the wires don't pop out
    Cons:
Uses screws that are so small you will never be able to change them if you lose the provided (and also tiny) alan wrench.

    No Less Than Brilliant

Written By Perseverance421, Pompton Plains, NJ on Friday, June 29, 2012

After having a number of friends try to make their cars "the best" according to overall sound, they all failed miserably except for one. He (having much experience in customizing cars) listened to what I knew to be the truth. That is, that these speakers add an additional layer of sound that I have heard with any other speaker. It is clear, crisp, defined, and as this tweeter is about to make your head from the superb highs, you are taken back towards reality.
    Pros:
    Best in the business.
    Cons:
If you listen to awful music...please don't make it louder.

    Great tweeters, high end stuff

Written By SergioRM, Los Angeles, CA on Tuesday, May 22, 2012

These tweeters are no lightweights... figuratively and literally. they are pretty big compared to other tweeters. Mounting the crossovers might be a little tricky for some, but not that big of a deal. The sound... pretty freakin amazing, world of difference to other tweeters. I have them amplified so having them being 2ohm speakers works out even better.
    Pros:
    Clarity, power, craftsmanship.
    Cons:
Size, mounting difficulty (if you don't have a stock mounting place), they are pretty ugly :/

    Sound better than they look!

Written By DAVE, Winston Salem NC on Sunday, May 06, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are excellent tweeters with clean, high-impact sound. Just what I need in my car's system. However, they are large units that need a lot of depth if you want to mount them flush or behind existing grills. They are somewhat directional and I would like a little more dispersion, But otherwise...great product. I had to mount them over my existing stock tweeter door locations and they have garish chrome grilles and a black pointed external cone in the center of the little grill. Looks like something Lady Ga Ga would wear!. These are the third set of tweeters I have tried in this car and, sound-wise, the best by far!
    Pros:
Great dynamic range and clean, pure, natural sound.
    Cons:
Units are rather large and the grills are butt-ugly. Also, I ordered "opened box" to save money. My mistake...whoever had them before had mangled the set screws on the crossovers. For a few more bucks, brand new is probably a better option.

    Simply Great

Written By Anonymous, Port St Lucie, FL on Friday, April 09, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Recently installed a pair of these in my 2010 highlander and immediately notice how alive the sound system became. Can hear details I couldnt hear before with the excuse for tweeters the factory ones were. Installing them was a cinch and I even cannibalized the old tweeter mounts to install them, they were the perfect size. Have 6 1/2's Kappas in the rear doors which also sound great no matter how loud I crank it. Worth every penny.

    Excellent Clarity

Written By Josh, Zion, IL on Wednesday, September 30, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these tweeters to complement my 4" Infinity 4022I's in the dash,
6" Infinity 6022SI's in the rear of my 93 4Runner. Instilation was a breeze
with the mounting options these came with I was able to use the original
brackets from the old tweeters by drilling two holes in them. I havnt
insalled my new Sont GT630 yet but even with the stock radion thats
installed my truck sounds absolutely great.

Anyways I gave it a 5 since the ease of installing them and the Crossovers
wes simple. The only thing wrong with this brand is the instructions could
be alot better if you dont know alot about them.

    Top notch

Written By TJHammer, Brooklyn, NY on Monday, February 16, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had 2 aftermarket systems before this and no tweeters compared to the audible range and clairty difference that these Kappas provide, not to mention they make stocks seem like cardboard.
The crossover and tweet are easy to install. For my 09 Camry I had to fabricate a mounting plate. The Kappa kit came with several tweeter mounting options/pieces, to which I modified one to suit my fabricated plate. This was the issue with the car NOT the Infinity kit, because it comes with several options.
Sounds like the band is singing right there in my front passenger seat. Highly recommend them...ready to order the Kappa 6x9's!

    Great Tweeter

Written By Matt, Portland, TX on Tuesday, September 23, 2008
Installed in a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

These tweeters were fairly easy to install. The mounting hardware that came along with the tweeters were easy to use and "mold" to my custom install. I used these in the upper speaker area behind the dash on my 2000 Grand Cherokee. I had to re-route the wiring so I could use the bypasses properly, but it wasn't too difficult.

The sound quality is excellant and I'm very happy with the product. You get what you pay for.
